Who is the best employer in India?
That's a tough call, and opinion is divided over that one. As they say different strokes for different folks! But here's one good indicator of which are the best companies to work for in the country ? purely from the employee's point of view. Hewitt Associates' fifth study 'Best employers in India 2007' (that is part of the human resource services consultancy's larger 'Best Employers in Asia 2007') is just out, and the Aditya Birla Group has emerged as the best employer in India for the year. Satyam Computers has grabbed the second place while the third best employers are Marriot Hotels India. The study took into account responses from more than 44,000 employees in 230 organisations all over the country. Others in the list include TCS, Wipro, Ford India, HSBC, Eureka Forbes, Cisco Systems, Godrej, Pantaloon Retail, HCL Technologies, Kotak Mahindra Bank and so on. So what are the cutting edge components that make these companies better than the rest? According to the survey, they all have a strong competitive advantage, display better business results, have managed to build long-term employee relationships successfully and have, in the process, attracted the best talent from the market. This time, there is also a PR firm that has found a place of pride in the Top 25 list: Text 100 India. The study reveals that 76% employees at the 25 companies are happy with their career opportunities. Quite a vote of confidence!

'The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing' was once pronounced by Marcus Aurelius, and it holds true for this flagship. Riding high on its robust belief 'traditions of trust', one of the world's largest two-wheeler manufactures Bajaj Group has always given its best shot to probably everything. Flagship that has the onus of 27 companies, which started as a mere sugar mill some eight decades ago by the dynamic philanthropist Jamnalal Bajaj, it today marks its presence in an array of businesses. From food to electricals, steel to consumer care, auto and Insurance, the entire gamut of companies generate billions. Had it been acquisition in Brazil and setting up of 'Bajaj Internacional Participators Ltd.' or tying up with National Insurance Company to offer health plans for disease...

Companies are embracing expansion to gain nation-wide presence!Be it the very recent $2.5 billion expansion plans of Spice Telecom or the not so recent plans of Idea Cellular to expand its operations to all the 23 mobile circles, there seems to be an intense dogfight between the smaller players in the telecom sector to attain national significance. According to a report by Credit Suisse on Indian telecom sector, the telecom operators have targeted a capital expenditure of $7.8 billion in the year 2006, which clearly signifies the growth that's awaiting this sunrise sector. While companies like Bharti and Reliance are already listed and have a national presence, it is now time for companies like Spice Telecom, Idea Cellular and Hutchison Essar to go public a...

When Anil Ambani inherited the businesses of Reliance Energy, Reliance Infocomm and Reliance Capital, nobody would have envisioned his frenetic focus on rapidly expanding the organisation through acquisition of various businesses. But where does innovation come into picture within all this? It's in the spirit of enterprise, and in the vision of becoming astoundingly larger than what normal growth could ever provide. And on these factors, the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) qualifies with pristine flying colours. But then, that never meant that Anil's individual companies lacked the focus on innovation to even a degree. For starters, Reliance Infocomm is the first mobile company in India to introduce 3D-Animation on mobile phones. Not only that, Relia...

At IIPM Mumbai we strongly believe in voicing out "Loud" our concerns for the sustenance of "Human Life". With this belief was born the idea of the "Lords of the Loud" concert an event that would create awareness across Mumbai about the deadly disease AIDS that is predominantly spreading rapidly amongst the youth. The concert brought together two of the greatest bands Euphoria and Strings from India and Pakistan respectively. The bands were especially selected to show solidarity between the two nations against this fight because "AIDS does not discriminate people do"The gates were only opened at 6:00pm but a staggering crowd awaited patiently almost an hour earlier to enter the venue. As the astounding crowd of more than 8000 people sang, shout and danced to the spell: bounding music of "Strings" who ended their heart rendering performance with the soulful song from the movie "Zinda" and reminded the crowd of the Importance of each person's Zindagi and to double the effort against eradicating the spread of the HIV Virus. The stage then played host to the energetic beats of "Euphoria" who pumped up the energy with their playful and vibrant songs. The concert was given a fitting end with the song "Kabhie Ana Tu Meri Gali" but with new lyrics dedicated to the city of "Mumbai: titled Kabhie Ana Tu Mumbai Gali". The lead singer Palash Sen a doctor by profession in his farewell emphasized to the crowd the significance of spreading AIDS Awareness. The concert will be etched in the minds of all attendees as being a great evening dedicated to an even greater cause.

Not necessarily following Europe, India can still legalise euthanasia
Entrenched in ethical, legal, social and moral questions, the issue of mercy killing, or euthanasia, for the terminally ill patients lies in the grey zone of law. While attempted suicide is rendered illegal under section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, the 'almost modern' dilemma of allowing voluntary death has been met with opposition, both from the judiciary and the Legislature. The Supreme Court categorically ruled in Gian Kaur versus State of Punjab case that by no stretch of imagination, 'Right to Life' (guaranteed in Article 21 of Constitution) can be interpreted as the 'Right to Death'. Some countries in Europe, like Holland & Switzerland, have legalised euthanasia depending on the patient (if the patient suffers unbearable & unmitigated pain). But then, these are the same countries that have legalised prostitution too. Truly, given the record of misusing noblest of laws in India, euthanasia should be allowed only with rock-solid safeguards. Critically, even that argument can be given if, and only if, the government forms at least a committee to investigate and recommend on the issue.

"The world can't help falling in love & staying so, with the legacy of the original rock star...
When the heartthrob bid us adieu in 1977, the world turned into one enormous Heartbreak Hotel, and as rumours of a deliberate 'disappearing act' began to fly, many of his ardent admirers reverently began to believe that one day the King would surely return. Cut to the Virginia Beach, which for four days every year, literally turns into Elvisland with its Elvis hued colours, sights and sounds that would reassure many a sceptic of how the legend indeed lives among us all, and in more ways than one. The capers of the throng of Elvis impersonators at this tribute to the King, held between 22-25 June, spanned from the incredible Elvis Street Parade, Elvis 500 Recliner Race, karaoke competitions to the game show Memphis Squares, whose concept runs parallel to Hollywood Squares, except of course for the nine Elvis impersonators in the nine boxes!
And if that wasn't already more than you bargained for, a fabulous line-up of unbelievably-alike-Elvis entertainers crooned into the evening, transporting all to the days of the poodle skirts and Ducktail hairstyles? The same Elvis whose haircut, black slacks and loose open-necked shirts would one day become the rage among all the 'cool' youngsters, was once a shy, stuttering molly-coddled mama's boy, and a regular target of the bullies. There was a time when little girls would burst out in tears at the mere thought of being his girl, scarcely a decade later, girls would still scream at his sight, but only to grab his attention, even if only for a passing smile. This blue-eyed boy from Memphis pursued his inclination towards black rhythm and blues and came out with his first single in July 1954 called That's All Right. But people truly came to notice him with his second single released the same year, soon after which 'Elvis the Pelvis' descended upon American television and how! His hip gyrations floored the populace...

...as RBI, with its unbelievably unique policies, must be the 8th wonder
In order to contain inflation, the Reserve Bank of India has hiked interest rates twice since the beginning of 2006. Amidst rising global interest rates, RBI has raised the reverse repo rates from 5.25% in the beginning of 2006 to 5.75% in June. Though inflation has shown no signs of fatigue, banks in India have been very quick in responding to RBI's rate hike by hiking lending rates. However, this continuing tighter monetary policy has started showing signs of disgrace. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond has touched a four year high of 8%, while the G-Sec prices touched a four year low, as short-term interest rates continue to race northwards. Besides, increased rates being charged by banks is also beginning to affect the credit off-take. The non-food credit demand has been experiencing a continuous slow down and has been declining since May.

| IIPM Editorial: Tomato Guarantee |
| 2006-07-12 23:07:31 |
Cut the middlemen out and tomatoes will look good againAs fuel prices hammer budgets across households, the vegetable market too has added to consumers' woes. With prices of basic vegetables spiralling (tomato: Rs.40/kg, onion: Rs.10/kg, potato: Rs.15/kg, lemon: Rs.30/kg), there are many who are forced to juggle budgets; though as an example of ever belated responses from the government, the Food & Supplies Minister for Delhi, Raj Kumar Chauhan, did claim on June 23, 2006, that the Delhi government would guarantee the availability of tomatoes priced at Rs.20 per kg at government stalls from the same week. The country?s economy has seen an inflation of 5% in the last two months because of increased fuel prices.
Though it is easy to infer (as smug government officials have been doing) that as the fuel required to transport vegetables got costlier, so did the vegetables, the fact is that this inference couldn't be farther from the truth. The straightforward fact is that prices have been manipulated by middlemen & traders along the value chain from the mandi to the consumer outlet. In fact, on the same day that our dear Delhi Minister was claiming Rs.20 per kg tomato guarantees, the wholesale rate of tomatoes at Azadpur mandi (one of the top North Indian wholesale markets) was between Rs.8 and 21! This clearly proves that rather than giving guarantees, what the government should be attempting on an extremely urgent basis, is to ensure that the value chain between these mandis & the final consumer is restructured to wipe out profiteering middlemen & traders.

Given 95 cases of soldiers battering colleagues; 18 murder attempts
Reading instances of deployed troops going berserk and shooting colleagues leaves one with a sense of disquiet; especially when such aberrations occur in those who are supposedly disciplined protectors of our country. According to statistics placed by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Parliament, the number of 'assault and affray' cases, which include battering of officers by soldiers, or violence among troops, aggregated 95 between 2002 and 2004. In 2005, the statistics further mentioned 18 incidents of 'fragging' (killing of 'or attempt to kill' an officer) by a soldier. These numbers of violence, especially amidst those serving in counter-insurgency operations, refl ect intense frustration and stress among troops. The war-like situations that the soldiers face, with extremely long hours of duty (extending up to 72 hours at a stretch, at times), without relief & recouping, are oft en quoted as being the reasons for the extreme behaviour of defence personnel. But the truth is actually much different, and much easier to solve too. Miserable living conditions and, most surprisingly, denial of leave stand amongst the top reasons for the personnel taking up fatal measures.

IIPM's Social Vision follows from the above mentioned historical evidence. IIPM wants to contribute to the creation of a movement, backed by proper education and research which will create a society where exploitation of man by man does not exist, where each individual has the scope to achieve his / her potential to the fullest extent. Distributive justice in this society will ultimately mean 'to each according to his need' a transition from 'to each according to his contribution'. In other words, universal humanism is the social vision of IIPM.
IIMs and the MBA education scenario in India
Unlike other fields of higher education like Economics, Psychology, Physics or Chemistry, Master level program in Business Management is not built on successful completion of Bachelor level program in Business Management. Graduates of all streams can join MBA programs. It was envisaged by the Ministry of Education that for a multidimensional program which includes subjects like Operation Research, Organisational Behaviour, Accounting, Finance, Economics and Marketing, etc. would need 1024 contact hours (16 hours a week, 32 weeks a year) for 2 years MBA Program. In contrast, to achieve master level proficiency in areas like Economics or Physics, one has to have around 3000 contact hours. Obviously, the contact hours available in the MBA programs were not found adequate. IIMs therefore, increased contact hours to around 24 hours a week, enabling them to teach the whole program in about 1500 contact hours.
Academically justified MBA programs with students of diverse background should be of three years duration with at least 24 hours a week of contact hours. A recent proposal to introduce 1-year MBA program to people having 5-years? work experience (obviously non-managerial supervisory level experience for most of them) is deemed to dilute academic content of the program to cater to emerging markets as demonstrated by Indian School of Business (with 250 acres of campus, wh...

The IIPM programme is today regarded as the only course with a WIDER COVERAGE than MBA/MBE courses taught anywhere else in the country because of its integration with National Economic Planning and a compulsory Marketing Specialisation making it the most INTELLECTUALLY STIMULATING course in India. In the light of globalisation IIPM aims to create a new generation of entrepreneurial managers, who can face with confidence emerging challenge of international markets, while remaining committed to remove massive poverty of Indian masses within a generation. For this, we must achieve a growth rate of 14% and more of the national economy and engineer market extension and social entitlements favouring the bottom 80% of the population. This is essential for corporate growth rate of the same order & more. Future entrepreneurial managers must be aware of this and not remain intellectually handicapped.
IIPM?s two year full time Post Graduate programme leads to the award of the MBA degree from the International Management Institute, Belgium. Students have the option of transferring their credits to IMI Belgium and continuing their studies there. Students study core subjects in the first year related to various areas like National Economic Planning, Marketing, Personnel & Industrial Relations, Finance & Accounting, Production, Quantitative Techniques, IT Systems and various other term papers. In the second year, students have to undertake compulsory specialisations related to Marketing & Information Technology. Apart from these two compulsory specialisations, students have a choice of taking up an additional specialisation, namely Finance or Human Resources. Students in the second year also study advanced core papers like Business Policy & Strategic Planning, Mergers & Acquisitions, and International Marketing. Students have to submit a thesis at the end of the programme.

Unadulterated insight into the wacky world of bogus branding?
Even as the Chinese Premier Hu Jintao finds himself on his Washington visit faced with flak for China‘s booming pirated products market, I can‘t help but think of the inherent branding concerns involved for businesses that claim to be affected by the raging propulsion of the ‘counterfeit branding‘ industry as it is termed a global phenomenon today, spanning goods ranging from handbags, watches, perfumes, shoes, shirts and miscellaneous fashion accessories on one end, to pharmaceuticals, software and even automotive components on the other!
Let‘s sneak a peek into the statistics: the counterfeit brands industry worldwide is pegged somewhere near the tune of $500 billion, as surveyed by the International Chamber of Commerce, and constitutes 5–7% of international trade. The United States Department of Commerce reveals that American companies suffer more than $200 billion each year owing to the rip-off business. And these official figures are not comprehensive, by any dimension.
