Do you know why bees lose their buzz?
2008-07-22 10:45:26
Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness on: Do you know why bees lose their buzz? Like humans, the insect world also experiences problem in performing their routine jobs, when sick. Bumblebees lose a bit of their buzz when ill, and like humans, have a tougher time doing daily tasks until they recover, according to British researchers who reported their findings in the Royal Society's journal, Biology Letters, last week. Evolutionary biologist Eamonn Mallon of the University of Leicester, who believes his findings can boost the efforts in saving dwindling bee colonies, said Honeybees with activated immune systems also have memory problems. He said that bees live on their memory. And, "If even a minor infection hurts its memor...

Do you know why women are more attracted to men with stubble?
2008-07-07 09:17:03
Miss Finder –The Journo, tries to find answers for your general knowledge and awareness on: Do you know why women are more attracted to men with stubble? All young men, do you know what it takes to get into a woman’s heart? Well, stubble is the way to win a woman’s heart, so says a study. Researchers found that women are more attracted to men with stubble than those with clean-shaven faces or full beards. The findings of the experiment, carried out on British women aged 18 to 44, could explain the appeal of actors such as George Clooney and Brad Pitt who cultivate their unshaven look. Women who participated in the research rated men with stubble as tough, mature, aggressive, dominant and masculine — and as the best romantic partners, e...

Do you know why chimpanzees hug and kiss?
2008-06-23 08:39:07
Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness on: Do you know why chimpanzees hug and kiss? In humans, a nice hug and some sympathy can normally help a bit after we get pushed around. Now, it’s known that chimpanzees also use hugs and kisses the same way. And it works! Researchers studying human's closest genetic relatives, the chimpanzees, found that stress was reduced in chimpanzees who were victims of aggression if a third chimpanzee stepped in to offer consolation. The findings were reported recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research was done by Dr. Orlaith N. Fraser of the Research Center in Evolutionary Anthropology and Paleoecology at Liverpool John Moores University in England; and colleagues. They studied chimpanzees...

Do you know why children are at risk from passive smoking?
2008-06-16 09:07:01
Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness on why children are at risk from passive smoking: Babies, infants and children on the whole don’t smoke or so do we think! But, the reality says something different. In fact, infants and children belonging to smoker parents are forced to smoke because of ignorance by the latter – yes, I’m talking about passive smoking! But do you know about the consequences? Well, children who are exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke that is passive smoking, early in life are at greater risk of being hospitalized for infections than those brought up in a smoke-free environment, researchers from Hong Kong reported, recently. The risk of being hospitalized wa...

Do you know why erectile dysfunction is an early sign of heart disease?
2008-06-02 12:35:42
Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness on why erectile dysfunction is an early sign of Disease">heart disease: Erectile dysfunction and heart disease may seem to be two different problems, but recent findings from two studies of men with diabetes add to the evidence that erectile dysfunction can be a powerful early warning sign for serious heart disease. A Hong Kong study of 2,306 men with diabetes but no signs of heart disease found that those with erectile dysfunction at the start were 58 percent more likely to have a heart attack or other major cardiac problems over the next four years than those with adequate sexual function. And, Italian physicians who followed 291 men who had diabe...

Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness on why smokers Smoking">quit smoking: If you are a smoker, you may know that the urge to smoke is contagious, but did you know that quitting the puff is, too? Well, a team of researchers, recently, has found that contagious pattern with smoking cessation. They observed that a smoker is more likely to kick the habit of smoking if a spouse, friend, co-worker or sibling does so. Moreover, the research showed that smokers tend to quit smoking in groups as those who don't stop puffing, increasingly find themselves pushed to the edge of their social circles. "Your smoking behavior depends upon not just the smoking behavio...

Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness on why exercise may protect girls from future Cancer">breast cancer: We are all aware of the fact that exercise is good for health. And middle-aged women have long been advised to get active to lower their risk of breast cancer after menopause. But, starting young, pays off, too. A new research shows, exercise during the teen years — starting as young as age 12 — can help protect girls from breast cancer when they're grown. Dr. Graham Colditz of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, the study's lead author, points out that the benefit of sustained physical activi...

Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness on why global warming is the greatest threat to tropical species: Global warming is the ultimate concern in today’s world, if you care! Nearly every other day, news headlines are flooded with the topic of global warming, although most of us are probably ignorant about the consequences that global warming can actually cause to living beings. The latest research on global warming says that while global warming is expected to be strongest at the poles, it may be an even greater threat to species living in the tropics. Tropical species are accustomed to living in a small temperature range and thus may be u...

2008-05-05 08:53:15
Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness: The popular belief that supports the 'fit but fat' theory, has recently got a setback. New research challenges the notion that you can be fat and medically fit at the same time, finding that being active can lower but not eliminate medical risks like heart attacks and other complications, faced by heavy women. Previous research has gone back and forth on whether exercise or weight has a greater influence on heart disease risks. The new study involving nearly 39,000 women helps sort out the combined effects of physical activity and body mass on women's chances of developing heart disease. The study by Harvard-affiliated researchers appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine. ...

Prof. Know Why answers: Playing with blocks helps young children gain language skills, a recent study says. It was found that after six months, language scores among half of 175 children aged 1½ to 2½ years who were sent plastic blocks were 15% higher than a matched group that did not receive the free blocks, according to the study by researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle. For the research, parents were given ideas about how to help their children play with the blocks. They also maintained diaries of their children’s activities over the time period. Finally, all the parents filled out questionnaires that assessed their child’s vocabulary, grammar, and other language abilities. The study proved again - which was believed ove...

Do you know why pollution keeps away bees from pollinating?
2008-04-21 08:01:11
Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness: Have you noticed lately that insects like bees and butterflies are gradually fading away in your neighborhoods? In a recent study, scientists found out why these wild populations of some pollinators, mainly bees, which need nectar for food, are fading in several areas of the world. Researchers at the University of Virginia have shown that air pollution from power plants and automobiles is wiping out the fragrance of flowers and thus hampering the ability of bees and other pollinating insects to track scent trails to their source. "The scent molecules produced by flowers in a less polluted environment, such as in the 1800s, could travel for rough...

Just don’t overreact, all you men! A recent study claims that you just can’t read signals coming from the fairer sex. So, men those who consider flirting to be your traditional domain, think again! To put it straight - men just don’t understand the attitude and advances of women. The flutter of eyelashes, the smile across the dance floor and the giggle after a lame joke - every woman knows the time-honored ways to get a man. | 2008-03-24 11:33:09 |
Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness: Have you ever wondered why women are attracted to men with darker skin, while men prefer fair-complexioned females? Well, the attraction is driven by preferences based on moral assumptions, says a study. Researchers from the University of Toronto, who conducted the study, said that women are predominantly attracted to men with darker skin because of latent thoughts about sex, mystery and danger. The findings suggested that, women would be naturally drawn to George Clooney over fellow actor and fairer-skinned, Daniel Craig. On the other hand, men prefer fair-complexioned women. In fact, more men would instinctively prefer Keira Knightley than her S...

Do you know why it does not pain cutting our nails?
2008-03-10 13:30:05
Prof. Know Why answers: In medical dictionary, nail is defined as “the horny epidermal derivative covering the dorsal aspect of the terminal phalanx of each finger and toe”. Well, in common man’s language, by fingernails and toenails, we understand hard scaley transparent structures that grow at the tip of our fingers and toes. Nails are part of our body. But the amazing thing is that it does not hurt when we cut them short, although it does not happen with other body parts (except hair). A nail consists of: Eponychium or cuticle - the fold of skin at the proximal end of the nail.Paronychium - the fold of skin on the sides of the nail.Hyponychium - the attachment between the skin of the finger or toe and the distal end of the nail.N...

Do you know why we need to sleep?
2008-03-03 09:18:36
Prof. Know Why answers: There are conflicting theories about the “purpose of sleep” – that is, why do we need to sleep? But the fact that we spend about eight hours asleep of every 24 hours, suggests that there are powerful evolutionary reasons for its continuing existence. Most theories center on the beneficial effects that sleep has on the brain. This is because; there is little evidence of any direct physiological effects on the body. Some scientists believe that sleep is a time for the immune system to regenerate, while one theory suggests that sleep evolved as a way of coping with limited supplies of food. The dominant theory is that sleep is a time for the brain to store memory. The idea is that during sleep the brain, in effect, goes of...

Do you know why the Great Wall of China was built?
2008-02-25 08:00:14
Prof. Know Why answers: The Great Wall of China is probably the China's best-known monument and one of its most popular tourist destinations. In 1987 it was designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and in 2007 it was elected one of the New 7 Wonders of the world. Wonder! –It certainly is, stretching so many miles. But, contrary to the popular belief, the Great Wall of China is not a single, continuous structure. Rather, it consists of a network of walls with watch-towers at intervals that leave the frontier open in places. Estimates of the total length of the monument vary, depending on which sections are included and how they are measured....

Do you know why people are straight or gay?
2008-02-20 07:55:53
Prof. Know Why answers: There has always been a debate about the reasons of a person’s sexual orientation - Is sexual orientation something people are born with or a matter of choice? Well, in the latest study that is bound to re-ignite the debate, it is weighed more on the side of genetics. So, why are people straight or gay? Researchers at McMaster University and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto have found new evidence that shows that your genes are what make you straight or gay. Led by neuroscientist Sandra Witelson, the study scanned the brains of healthy, right-handed homosexual and heterosexual men using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A decade back, Witelson had demonstrated that there are more left-handers in the ...

Prof. Know Why answers: With a legion of male admirers, curvaceous Salma Hayek or Penelope Cruz may brighten up the screen, every time they popup, but a new academic study suggests that their appeal, and that of other curvy and well-endowed women, is based on more than just the purely physical aspect. Scientific studies have consistently demonstrated that men through the ages have found women with hourglass figures more attractive. According to a study published last year, even the ancient Egyptian men have sought out curvaceous women. Although the reasons for the attraction have never been conclusively proven, many scientists believed that a shapely figure suggested to a man that a woman would be good at bearing children and have a longer life expe...

Prof. Know Why answers: We all know and probably believe the health risks associated with smoking tobacco. Even though, the smokers find it really difficult to quit smoking, no matter how hard they try! The nonsmokers would obviously say that the smokers never actually give a serious effort to kick the puff or there’s always a lack of will. But now, there’s an answer to why people can’t quit smoking, easily. It has been proven through scientific research that someone’s unsuccessful attempts to stop smoking a hundred times over, reasons to the proteins in the brain. A genetic study of 14,000 people in Europe and the US has shown that variations in segments of two proteins that serve as gateways fo...

Do you know why body temperature rises high during fever?
2008-01-28 08:33:23
Prof. Know Why answers: A healthy person's normal body temperature usually fluctuates between 97°F (36.1°C) and 100°F (37.8°C), with the average being 98.6°F (37°C). When our body temperature rises above 98.6°F, we call it fever. But why does the body temperature rise during fever? Our normal body temperature is maintained by a regulatory center called the “anterior hypothalamus”, located deep within the brain. This region functions like a thermostat, registering body temperature. The nervous system constantly relays information about the body's temperature to the thermostat, which in turn activates different physical responses designed to cool or warm the body, depend...

Do you know why older people find it difficult to adapt to new gadgets and technology?
2008-01-21 07:03:25
Prof. Know Why answers: If you notice, you will find that newer and technologically advanced gadgets are mostly, if not always, targeted to the younger generation. Why? If you think - because they have more spending powers, think again! While it might be true and could be one reason, the main reason could very strongly be that older people find it difficult to adapt to new gadgets readily. But why is that, psychologically predisposed older men and women find it difficult to take to new technology? Scientists claim to have worked out why people in their late 40s and 50s have to get their children to load their iPods for them. The older you get the more difficult it is for your conscious mind to override years of...

Prof. Know Why answers: This heading, “why we are humans” may sound weird, unless explained. There are so many different species living on earth, some, even being gigantic and physically immense powerful, but we, humans rule the planet Earth, in spite of being so tiny little beings! We have either tamed all the fierce and threatening species or put them in enclosures according to our whishes and requirements. And only we study them through various researches and it’s not the other way round. All these prove that we are the most powerful of the species. What makes us supreme? It’s sheer intelligence! But why and how are we humans more intelligent than others? Researches have proved time and again, that it’s all in the brain. We humans have more advanced and bigger brain. W...

Do you know why older men prefer younger wives?
2008-01-07 07:45:58
Miss Finder –The Journo, tries to find answers: If we look at the marriages world over, probably we will find that most of the marriages happen where men are comparatively older than their wives. This has become the most normal phenomenon! But here the point of discussion is a bit different –why older men (say fifty plus or higher) prefer much younger wives (say with an age difference of twenty or thirty plus or even more)? There are many well known relationships of the kind, such as Tony Curtis (82), and Jill Vandenburg (40), Michael Douglas (63), and Catherine Zeta Jones (38), or the late Anna Nicole Smith who married an ailing 89-year-old oil tycoon when she was only 26. Is it culture, genetics or the environment which drives such a choice? A...

Do you know why women are marrying younger men?
2008-01-07 07:18:46
Miss Finder –The Journo, investigates: When a woman marries a man, who’s a few years older than her, we take it as normal. But when it’s the opposite, it becomes a topic of gossips! Let’s see why this inverse relationship is picking up pace in this modern times. Though there’s a lot of debate about this issue, according to psychologists, - as women gain economic equality, they no longer marry for economic protection. Instead they marry purely on the grounds of attraction. Relationship counsellors feel that older women are seeing younger men as someone who they can have fun with and also who doesn’t necessarily want to have children. They want somebody who is young enough not to feel threatened by their career as well. While on the other side, an older woman come across as being lot more mature and confident about herself, which can be very attractive to a younger man. Psychotherapists believe that this has a lot to do with women’s increased position as a sex. They are doing better than men, with better education and more powerful jobs. They are therefore able to be more demanding and essentially doing what men used to do, - go for the younger, more beautiful models. Some younger guys even told me that they find older women more sexy as they put on more flesh at right places with their age, transforming into a wholesome super curvy figure. Well, the debate may go on, but there’s surely an increasing change in the ratio of the role reversal, i.e. more older women marrying younger men. And gossipers, you are certainly going to get more engaged as this promising trend picks up more flames in the coming days!Related Posts:

Built entirely of white marble, Taj Mahal, is said to be the “eternal symbol of love”, the world has ever seen! Historians have noted that its architectural beauty has never been surpassed. It appears pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines. These changes, people say, depict different moods of a woman. Different people may have different views of the Taj Mahal, but it is best appreciated when the architecture and its adornments are linked to the passion that inspired it -"love"! | Do you know why bats hang upside down? |
2007-12-27 07:41:48
Prof. Know Why answers: There are nearly 1,000 species of bats, worldwide. They range from the tiny bumble-bee bats of Thailand, to the vulture size Fox bats. Their wingspans range from as short as 6 inches to as long as 6 feet in length. Their diet consists primarily of insects, though some species eat nectar and fruits. But, the vampire bats drink blood of other animals. And, remember for your general knowledge -bats are the only mammals that can fly. The most amazing fact about the bats is that they spend most of their time by hanging upside down! Bats have special kind of feet joints that let them lock their feet in a tightly clasped position (without the use of any muscle), with the weight of the body keeping the foot locked. Bats roost this way by their hind feet. And special...

Do you know why yawning is infectious?
2007-12-19 08:53:26
Prof. Know Why answers: Why is yawning infectious? First let’s see how we define a yawn. Yawning can be defined as a sudden, deep inhalation of air accompanied by an open mouth, tightened cheek muscles, eye closure, and tearing. Everybody yawns -from unborn babies to the oldest human being. Animals do it, too. And before you finish reading this, it's likely that you will end up yawning at least once, if not more. Why? I will come to that later. But, why exactly do people and animals yawn? Science and researches haven’t yet reached a conclusion. But there are several theories or ideas about why people yawn. Here are the few most common theories. One theory says that our bodies induce yawning to draw in more oxygen or remove a build-up of carbon dioxide. According to another theo...

Do you know why does the wind blow?
2007-12-10 08:57:50
Prof. Know Why answers: What is wind? Why does the wind blow? How is wind different from air? Did any of these questions ever struck your mind? - If yes, just read on. Wind is moving air and is caused by differences in air pressure within our atmosphere. Air, under high pressure, moves to the areas of low pressure. The greater the difference in pressure, the faster the air flows, and the stronger is the wind of that place. –That’s the simple explanation. The atmosphere is composed of air which, is made up of tiny particles of different gases like nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, etc. The Sun shines on our atmosphere all the time. But, it heats the surface of the Earth unevenly. As a result, it’s warm in some places, while cold in other places. When air gets warmer, its particles spread out. This makes the air lighter, or less dense. So it rises. When air cools, it becomes heavier, or denser, and sinks. As warm air rises, air from cooler areas flows in to take the place of the heated air. This process is called convection and causes air to move. The differential heating of the Earth's surface and the resulting convection is what causes wind on this planet. Have you ever wondered, how a hot air balloon floats in the air? Well, it applies the same science as that of the wind. Air is heated by a gas flame below the balloon. The air inside becomes hot and lighter or less dense than the cooler air outside the balloon. As the hot air rises, it carries the balloon upward. When the gas flame is turned down, the air cools and the balloon sinks back to the ground. Wind also plays an important role in determining weather conditions. Related Posts: Do you know why does it rain?Do you know why lightning happens?

Do you know why flame is multicolored?
2007-11-26 07:35:55
Prof. Know Why answers: Flame color depends on several factors, mainly oxygen supply, generated heat, carbon particles and the burning material with the movement of electrons in the metal ions. Thus all flame colors are not the same and different flames have different colors, like the flame color of a candle is different from the flame colors of a burning wood or a gas burner. Each flame is multicolored, being mostly blue at the bottom, then orange or yellow and finally black at the top. The blue color signifies the hottest temperature zone of any flame. Since fire needs oxygen to burn, and as the bottom of the flame does not get much oxygen, it is the hottest spot in the flame and is blue in color. The flame gradually cools and changes color...

Do you know why mosquito bites itch?
2007-11-19 07:01:09
Prof. Know Why answers: Mosquitoes are the familiar flying insects belonging to the family of Culicidae. There are about 2,500 known species of mosquitoes in the whole world. Mosquitoes are particularly dangerous insects since they are known to transmit such serious diseases as yellow fever, malaria, filariasis dengue and Japanese B encephalitis. Mosquitoes generally bite at any time, but prefer the evening. And, do you know that only the female mosquitoes bite? Yes! The male mosquitoes, and sometimes the female mosquitoes, feed on nectar and other plant juices. But in most species the female mosquitoes require a blood meal to acquire protein, needed to produce eggs. Female mosquitoes lay multiple batches of eggs during their lifespan, and a new blood meal is needed to produce every batch. Different mosquito species prefer different host species. Some mosquitoes seek blood meals from birds, while other mosquitoes love mammals. And some are generalists. But why do mosquito bites itch? The female mosquito inserts her needle-like proboscis (a slender, tubular, feeding and sucking organ) into the victim's skin, to draw blood. She sucks until her abdomen is full. But doing that is not easy as blood clots very quickly (on contact with air) to have a drink. So, the mosquito injects her saliva, containing digestive enzymes and anticoagulants that stop the blood from clotting. Our body sees that as an enemy and produces and sends chemical called histamines to the injected area, to ward off infection. And, it’s the reaction between histamines and the saliva of the mosquito that causes the itching, swelling and redness. Related Post: Do you know why mosquitoes bite certain people?

Do you know why sea water is salty?
2007-11-14 09:55:51
Prof. Know Why answers: Why and how is the sea water salty? Well, to put it simple, - rivers erode minerals from rocks and soil throughout their journey and finally deposit them into seas. These elements include sodium and chlorides, which, when combined, become salt. For a bigger picture, the sea water is salty because of the gradual concentration of dissolved chemicals eroded from the Earth's crust is dumped into the sea. Furthermore, solid and gaseous ejections from volcanoes under the sea, suspended particles that are swept to the ocean from the land by onshore winds, and materials dissolved from sediments deposited on the ocean floor also contribute to its saltiness. Salinity is increased by evaporation or by freezing of sea ice and it is decreased as a result of rainfall, runoff, or the melting of ice. Related Post: Do you know why does it rain?

A glass or two of wine can boost our ability to remember, says a new study. Scientists have found that moderate amounts of alcohol challenge the brain and it responds by improving the memory. The findings rubbished the notion of drinking to forget, as they also show drinking enough to exceed the limit for driving means you are more likely to remember the embarrassment of an unrestrained spell – from making an indecent proposal to dancing without your trousers on. Contrary to popular belief, it has also been found that excessive levels of alcohol even enhanced memories of highly emotional stimuli. In fact, heavy drinking actually reinforces negative memories. But moderate levels of alcohol consumption, equivalent to one or two of wine a day, enhance memory on the whole. Researchers suggest - just like the best way to build strength in a muscle is to challenge the muscle, moderate levels of alcohol challenge the brain and it responds by improving memory. So alcoholics, you get yet another excuse to rejoice and celebrate! Cheers! Related Post: Do you know why we fall in love?

Do you know why pregnant women should not drink?
2007-11-05 09:34:11
Prof. Know Why answers: Women who are pregnant or trying for a baby should stop drinking alcohol altogether or at least restrict to moderate drinking – the doctors advice. Because by exceeding the recommended limit they often put their babies at risk. But do women ever pay any serious attention on this cliché warning, ever? If not, all you women better know the consequences now, than be sorry, later! Although, moderate drinking like up to two units once or twice a week is permissible, total abstinence is always desirable – as the doctors say. Heavy drinking can cause Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, an incurable condition resulting in retardation, poor memory and in the worst cases, facial abnormalities. Surveys say, about one in 1,000 babies are born with the syndrome each year, worldwide. But a milder condition, Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, is more common, affecting more than 6,000 children each year in Britain alone, and is a leading cause of learning difficulties. Because many women do not realize that they are pregnant for the first few months, the advice is extended to those trying to conceive as well. And if a pregnant woman chooses to carry on drinking, she should not get drunk and keep to the recommended limit of one to two units once or twice a week in order to minimize risks to the baby. | Do you know why dark chocolates are beneficial? |
2007-10-29 10:29:00
Prof. Know Why answers: Chocolates are always yummy, delicious and irresistible, especially with girls and kids. And now, they also seem to be beneficial for your health because a daily dose of yummy dark chocolate may help patients suffering from the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Serotonin (a brain chemical related to CFS) is believed to play an important role in the regulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, vomiting, appetite and fatigue. According to scientists from Hull York Medical School, dark chocolates have been found to lower levels of serotonin. The research team said that patients with CFS, found that their symptoms were reduced when they consumed dark chocolate, much more so when they consumed milk chocolate that had brown dye added to it. The researchers noted that patients taking dark chocolate reported significantly less fatigue when they started eating the sweet. They also reported more fatigue when they stopped eating it. The scientists, however, stressed that the quantity of dark chocolate consumed should be moderate. Endocrinologists say, dark chocolate is high in polyphenols, which have been associated with health benefits, like reduction in blood pressure. Also, high polyphenols appear to improve levels of serotonin in the brain , which has been linked with CFS. According to doctors and nutritionists, cocoa is rich in antioxidant properties and so consuming dark chocolate can over stimulate the nervous system, helping reducing fatigue. So cheer up all you girls and chocolate lovers – now you have reasons to gorge on your favorite dark chocolates. | Do you know why we cry? |
2007-10-29 09:36:58
Prof. Know Why explains: Women cry 64 times a year on average, while men just 17, says a recent study. Actors and politicians do it on demand though! But why does crying happen in the first place? When we become upset, our brains and bodies overreact and work overtime, producing chemicals and hormones. Crying helps eliminate t,hese extra chemicals that we don't need, in the form of tears. These tears are formed in tiny glands present in the upper eyelids of our eyes, called lachrymal glands. Scientifically, emotional tears contain high levels of manganese and a chemical called prolactin. As our tears flow, they sooth our sadness or distress by disposing of these chemical agents. That is why generally, we feel calmer or more refreshed after crying, because the tears get rid of these hormones that are produced when we are sad, happy, or distressed.

Do you know why lizards lose their tails?
2007-10-29 09:36:58
Prof. Know Why explains: Lizards can lose their tails, but not all lizards can grow them back, though. Lizards that lose their tails also lose an important source of energy because they store fats at the base of their tails. In lizards, the tail bones have central regions that break away easily when the tail is pulled. The muscles of the tail pull apart and the blood vessels constrict to stop the wounded tail from bleeding. So, if a predator attacks a lizard, the tail is designed such that it separates from the body allowing the lizard to escape while the predator gets the tail. Lizards that lose their tails grow them back but the replacement tail is never as long or as colorful as the original one. Replacement tails grow back in as little as three months or as long as two years. ...

Do you know why trees shed leaves?
2007-10-29 09:36:58
Prof. Know Why explains: Like people, the leaves of trees also age, but do so much more rapidly. Each spring the young leaves develop from buds and then rapidly mature to full size to carry on photosynthesis (the process that provides food needed for the tree to grow and maintain itself). By autumn, the leaves of many hardwood trees reach old age and do not function well. At this time a tree must also prepare for the harsher weather conditions of winter. Signals to the tree indicating it is time to prepare for winter include shorter days, less intense sunlight and cooler temperatures. Prior to the leaves falling, nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus move from the leaf into the adjacent stem to be reused during the nex...
