The Python Of Finals
2008-04-17 21:02:39
Everyone at school is feeling it. The great python of finals tightening it's grip. There is only two weeks left, and four weeks worth of work. People have stopped chatting, but instead sit quietly at their desks, staring zombie like into their labtops....

Essay on Herbert Bayer
2008-04-11 19:32:56
I haven't covered it much, but I am also enrolled in CCA's History of Visual Communications class. The midterm was an essay, but with a twist. The highest grade a person could get is a B, if they just hand it in on normal paper. To get an A, it must be designed....

Tellmewhy
2008-04-10 16:55:38
I just finished reading Tellmewhy: The First 24 Months of a New York Design Company. I found this book The Great Overland Book Company, a cute little book store near my apartment in San Francisco. It really stood out from other other design books because, it is half novel, half design book. The novel portion describes the first two years on karlssonwilker inc....

Post Project Grade
2008-04-10 14:02:50
Jason turned our poster projects back very quickly. And I got about what I expected, a mid B. It's a fair grade when you take into account my hundreds of sketches. Maybe I should take a picture of the giant stack, and post it. Anyone want to see?...

CCA Spring Fair 2008
2008-04-06 14:59:59
California College of the Arts Spring Fair may be one it's best kept secrets. Very few people I talk to know about it, but those who do say it's one of the best places to pick up original art. Students, faculty, and alumni, come together to show and sell their work including t-shirts, paintings, ceramics, photography, sculpture, metal art, prints, books, glass, paper, textiles, and jewelry....

My First Bad Critique
2008-04-01 21:25:15
As expected my critique went very badly. Jason brought in a quest critiquer, who gave me very hard time. In part because I admitted to my dissatisfaction with my design, and I knew what was wrong with it. I always thought that showed poor charictor in a professor, if they jump on someone who knows what went wrong. Knowing what went wrong, is the learning process....

2008-03-28 15:26:57
I am 30 minutes away from printing my large format poster, and I am very discouraged. I don't feel my design is good enough, though I have spent countless hours sketching, tracing, and digitalizing my current concept....

Graphic Design I, Project 2
2008-03-06 16:45:44
Last week we started project 2 in Graphic Design I. Everyone was randomly given a band, for which we must design a poster in large format (24x36 in). The processes was very similar to the logo project. But there is a new added pressure, Jason Munn our professor, is a professional poster designer, and more than a little famous....

Final Logo Design For Graphic Design I
2008-02-28 16:22:02
Here are the final renderings of the three logos designed for my first project in Graphic Design I. The three logos are for Secretly Canadian, a music label based out of Indiana. As a whole I think the three are very good, but the Canadian geese still need a little work to be complete....

First Final Project For Typography I
2008-02-27 15:20:08
Over the first five weeks of class, everyone in Typography I has been working on creating an original type-icon from two existing letters and/or numbers. I started by sketching type together in my sketch book. Over the first two weeks I generated over a hundred different combinations. From those I choose three to experiment on. Eventually I settled on a combination of J and R....

Stream Of Thought
2008-02-25 19:31:24
So I had a cute idea a few hours ago. What if you I used twitter to microblog while I am at school, and to post rand stuff like how much homework I am really doing... or not doing... and run it as an aside next to my normal ramblings? With just a little research and a brand new twitter account, my new concept is already up and rolling....

One Week Until Final Critiques
2008-02-12 00:32:58
The graphic design classes really have three finals, one for each of the three major projects per semester per class. They are all equality important. I know this should make me less stressed. But I am a perfectionist, so I am more stressed....

CCA Annual Graphic Design Lecture
2008-02-08 14:49:19
It looks like there was some sort of mixup. The calendar broucher that the school mails out and stocks around campus, says the Graphic Design Lecture would be on Feb 2, but the website and email newsletter says it is on Feb 16. The latter correct. As far as I can tell it we bill in [...]...

Wall Critique Of Logo Concepts
2008-01-30 21:21:41
I realized today I haven't been keeping you all up-to-date on my projects. In Graphic Design I, I have sketched more than 200 logo ideas for the record label Secretly Canadian. Today I choose 9 of my best for a wall critique in class. The critique went better than I expected. From the nine, four stood out as working possibilities. Here they are:...

I Feel Like An Ass
2008-01-28 21:37:34
I haven't followed up on the Makeshop topic because I feel like an ass. On Thursday I sat around waiting for the makeshop to begin. I think I waited 30 or 40 minutes. By that point I was a little angry. There had been so many issues with getting into the Makeshop, the website, and scheduling, I just couldn't believe no one was there....

First Semester Finished Part II
2008-01-13 19:29:13
In an effort to help those who take these classes after me, I am going to give a full postmortem for each class, a score between 1-10, and who I think should take it. 3D Visual Dynamics with Christina Lee. Intro To The Modern Arts with Dr. Celeste Connor. Intro to the Arts with Lynn Robinson. 4D Visual Dynamics with Bayete Smith ....

Smells Like Finals

Looking Lantern I
2007-12-02 15:07:24
I have been killing myself on my class projects over the last week. Everyday has been a 12 or 14 hour work day. I am exhausted. I have been spending 6 to 12 hours a day in the 3D studio building my favorite piece of this term, a box I call "Looking Lantern I."...

Art In Game Play With Crayon Physics
2007-11-16 14:11:17
I just found the coolest little freeware game, Crayon Physics. Basically you are given a visual problem, and you solve it by drawing. So cool! The creator, Koonigames, is about to release a new version, Crayon Physics Deluxe, with tons of levels and many more shapes and actions to draw....
