The Yearling (Pet Peeve: IF)
2008-03-26 19:31:09
I don't normally paint from other people's photo references but there are always exceptions to the rules (some consider it a pet peeve for Illustration Friday purposes). This watercolor (watercolour) painting is an interpretation of an image from a photograph of a first-place yearling horse in Herefordshire, England by Ruth Harris (the source photograph was used with Ruth's permission). Please note: As well as taking spendid photographs of prize-winning horses in the country-side, Ruth Harris also is a watercolour painter: http://www.rsharts.co.uk/If you would like to purchase this original watercolour painting, please click here. ...

Today's head study life session
2008-03-23 14:07:34
Had another life session today. Our model is terrific. I don't think it is an easy task to sit still for three hours and watch an imaginary spot in the air while people paint but today's model, Grace, is expert. Here is my humble attempt from today's session. Pastel on paper....

Solo Show at Toulany's Lunchbox -- Halifax, Nova Scotia
2008-03-06 17:36:21
Tonight, I dropped off nine paintings at Toulany's Lunchbox, 3081 Gottengin Street (next to the Hydrostone Market). The Toulany family has served our community from this location for more than 30-years -- a true landmark in Halifax if ever there was one. The young Bash Toulany has taken over the reins and has revamped this outlet and their food is great, as always. I'm absolutely thrilled to have my paintings displayed here and thank Bash and family and the customers at Toulany's Lunchbox for supporting the arts by allowing local artists, like myself, to display and sell work there. The following are the pieces that are currently available at Toulany's Lunchbox, if you are interested in viewing them and purchasing, please visit Toulany's Lunchbox. Th...

More photos from Eastern Passage plein air painting
2008-03-04 07:14:39
This morning, I ran across a photograph of Eastern Passage from mid-February on the Chronicle-Herald's website and was able to discover the photographer's name. Greg Gidney turns out to be the same photographer who asked me if I was "colour co-ordinating" the paint on my face with my clothes on the day Gord and I were painting in -11C weather. Greg Gidney emailed along the following images he took of that day. These images are © 2008 Greg Gidney and are used with permission of the photographer on this blog post. Thanks Greg!Photo by Greg GidneyPhoto by Greg GidneyPhoto by Greg Gidney ...

The Halifax Town Crier -- a watercolour study
2008-03-03 14:40:35
Watercolour study of Peter Cox -- Halifax's Town CrierPeter Cox is Halifax's town crier and a charming person. I interviewed him a number of years ago for Halifax This Week. I remember how fun he was to talk with and the beautiful Wedgwood figurine that was modeled after him in his uniform. Recently, I ran across an image of him I had taken at a Natal Day Parade a few years ago and did the watercolour study of him on the left....

Plein air painting in downtown Halifax -- or, March: in like a lion, out like a lamb
2008-03-01 18:40:04
After dropping off another painting at Uncommon Grounds this morning (show extended to the end of March) we headed out to paint. But the c-c-c-old fog drifted in just before today's storm and we cut out a bit early. (It was odd having snow blow in on the painting). We found a great spot though and if it wasn't for the wind and the coldness (and, oh yeah, the blowing snow) it would have been great -- we were in a car parkade overlooking a section of the city's downtown. It was like having the world all to ourselves. People bustling about below us on the streets were oblivious to us and not another soul showed up to look over our shoulder as we painted....

Sunday -- a day to catch up with my blog
2008-02-24 15:23:11
Dear Blog reader:Been busier than a piece of pork in a pork 'n beans factory, or, maybe I should say, a piece of fish in a fish 'n chips factory...One great piece of news is that the show and sale at Uncommon Grounds is being extended until the end of March. A few paintings have sold and I'll be adding a few new ones on March the 1st. So come on down! Also, I'm gearing up for another solo show and sale of select paintings at Toulany's Lunchbox starting on March 6. More details to follow soon. One of the best things that has been occupying my time has been painting en plein air with Gord MacDonald. For the last three Saturdays we've hit the trail to the lonesome pine (er, um, so to speak). We've been painting in weather as cold as -11 C with a windchill factor...

Jim Carey's Happy Feet
2008-02-09 05:45:13
I know this is totally off topic but I saw this episode of Sesame Street a looonng time ago with Jim Carey. I finally ran across it this morning on YouTube.com. This short performance totally amazed me when I saw it and I've been trying to find it ever since I saw it. Here it is, the guy who can act from the top of his head to the tip of his toes, literally....

One of the nicest Valentines messages I've read in a long while
2008-02-05 06:06:00
"Old Friends" By Mary Ann ArchibaldA Valentines edition blog post talks about non-traditonal ways of looking at this romantic celebration. The blog features four Etsy sellers (including me)! What a super Valentines Day message, thank you, Dragoninknots!>>>Dragoninknots' blog>>> My card (one of four Etsy items mentioned in the V-day post)(This card is also available at Toulany's Lunchbox and Convoy Grocery in Halifax)."Old Friends" is a photograph I took along the Halifax waterfront. The benches almost seem to be holding hands and the wood has weathered a good deal. It strikes me that this is a location where old friends would meet, share a sandwich and catch up on the news."New friends are silver, old friends are gold."Happy Valenti...

Glooscap's big sky over Blomidon and mud flats - WIP (Work In Progress)
2008-01-13 14:24:51
This is a painting that is currently in progress on my easel. It is a 30 x 36-inch oil painting of Blomidon in the Annapolis Valley. One more session with this painting may bring it to where I want it to be. Blomidon is where Glooscap is said to have lived. Glooscap is a Mi'kmaq legendary figure created by the Great Spirit, holding both man and God-like qualities. ...
