THE DECEMBER FIRST BLOG !
2007-12-02 14:09:00
I DO NOT KNOW "WHY" YOU MUST ALWAYS DO A BLOG ON DECEMBER FIRST ... BUT, I AM SURE THERE IS A REALLY GOOD REASON.Nothing is happening in Buffalo-town, things are as quiet as the lack of change in my pocket. We are entering another of those "lay down the snow, and never melt it 'til spring" winters, (you know, drop a quarter and it will not reappear until this snow from November 12th gets to melt lastly next spring); I have been trying to get outside to turn in the Beer bottles, replace the CV boots on the Yugo, and hook up the propane tank in the Buffalo, and, oh yea! swap the studs onto the Jeep for winter.Somehow, this year the enthusiasm is "not " there... I have perhaps a weeks worth of "get-ready-for-winter" work yet to do, and, have just been foot dragg...

2007-10-28 22:19:00
WELL, IT HAS BEEN A WEEK ... NO MORE "NO STARTS"... PERHAPS THE REASON WHY IS THE SPARE PARTS, A COMPUTER, COIL, MODULE, AND A TRIGGER IN THE TOOL BOX OBVIOUSLY SCARED OFF THE PROBLEM...(BETCHA' IF I LEAVE THE SPARE PARTS AT HOME, SHE'LL QUIT.)THE WATER PUMP FAILED YESTERDAY-THAT WAS/IS TODAYS' BUSINESS. THIS "WAITING" FOR THE NEXT FAILURE TO START SIMPLY HAS ME HOBBLED... WHEN ? WHERE ? WILL IT BE ?AH WELL, ONCE I RELAX, AND THE WEATHER TURNS BITTER THE NO-START WILL RISE UP AGAIN....FURTHERING THE BUFFALO PROJECT : A 1977 MO-PED JUST JOINED THE STABLE, (FOXI GT SUPER) A CLASSIC IN THE MOPED WORLD (LIKE A SHOVEL HEAD HARLEY), DUTCH BUILT, AND LIKE NEW... A READER TOLD ME ITS LIKE COMPARING A CORVETTE WITH A 160 MPH SPEEDOMETER IN IT TO A ECONO BOX WITH A 80 MPH SPEEDO --- THE FOXI HAS A ...

JEEPS-MONEY-TOW TRUCKS= POVERTY, NOT SECURITY
2007-10-20 09:48:00
Well, it happened... for the second time in 64 years, I had to call a tow truck !Actually, the "first" time was a AAA deal, that cost me nothing ... yesterday was a hundred bucks !!Intermittent problems on vehicles are hard to diagnose (actually they are the hardest), if something simply "breaks"...it is easy to locate, -then to also repair the "cause", and you are done (with confidence). An intermittent or random problem firstly has to be "identified" in order to not keep causing "indeterminate" failure modes. I have seen some really errant and disguised (goofy) things occur with machinery and electrics over the years, but, that does not allow you to ever "accept" their presence, or cope with the failure.Add-in the complexity and unforgiving designs of today's autos, and you are actually ...

COLUMBUS DAY !!!!
2007-10-07 10:07:00
Here in Oregon, we have "bad" memories of the Columbus Day storm ....So, every Columbus Day, you make sure the snow blower is working, the tire chains are ready-to-go, and that there is plenty of food, and beer, in the cabin; firewood, candles, blankets, snow shoes, and animal shelter and food.Usually October is the best month of the year for weather, 60 degree days-clear blue skies and random puffy white clouds, cool evenings ('til dark) then 25 degrees ! The whole month goes on like this.... UNTIL November first, when the switches get thrown, and the rain starts and grey skies begin, lasting until May.This year we had snow September 26th ! ... and it has been November for two weeks now, with snow, wind, rain, grey, and cold. My bus work was a month (or three weeks) behind @ mid- S...

175 DAY REPORT ....
2007-09-17 14:42:00
Well, it "has" been some time since my last 75 day report !!!100 days actually !As you can see, I took down all of the lengthy technical bus building and diesel articles I had posted here, there was not much response to them.... so, I suppose if anyone wants info.... they will ask.Between May 10th and now, there has been some bus activity in building the Buffalo, but a family death, and some financial woes that followed sorta' derailed things for a while; mainly, I have been gathering all the equipment, and hardware for the project ... (for assembly this winter).A 47 gallon DOT/ASME horizontal mount propane tank, a 25,000 BTU forced air propane furnace, a household GE propane stove, a over/under washer/dryer, an apartment sized dishwasher, 7 gallon, and...

PART 2 - BUSSER ...
2007-03-30 19:38:00
All healed up now ? (from Part 1 BOOZE-BUS-BIFINKUS)We left the bar stool last time with amp/hours and battery selections ... Since our Deep Cycle batteries are rated in amp/hours, we need to know more about this;We really have to look at "what" it is that we will be doing/using our DC habitation system "for..."One mode of operation is Day-time at sea/on the road:the bus system handles its own, the Habitation system has only a small amount of solar photovoltaic charging going on -but our batteries are at full charge- the drain on the system is the refrigerator (set to 12 volt (25 amp) DC), and there are other things like the 12 volt water pump, and 12 volt circulation fans for heat, that will enter in as well.... by the end of the day, these loads have used a lot of our battery power, a...

A WHAZAMMO SEZ' ...These terms are actually from Southern Bhutan, Western Bulgaria, Eastern Serbia, West-side Cleveland, and South Central Oregon ... where "B" prefixed stuff is "really" important. Beer, Butts, Breasts, Busses, Buttocks, Beer, Brandy, Booze, Balls, Buicks, Blowers, Beer, Buffalos, Belly buttons, Big, BTU's, Bikes, Beer, Brakes, Browns, Bikini's, Bare assed, Balled, Broke, Beer, Bass, Busty, Bizerk, Bombed, Bull shitted, Barfed, Busted, Boinked, Baked, Beer, Berzerk, Barf, Bologna, Bogus, and I am sure the list could go on and on... The point being "B" .... my last name starts with B, B is a good place to B.The next "B" word is even worse ... How about Batteries ? What do "you" know about batteries ? Well ... To begin with, there are Dry and Wet batteries ... (this pa...

DON'T OUT THAT CACTUS !! ....
2007-03-22 21:50:00
While "custom building" and "consulting" on projects of all types for a lifetime, admittedly the bulk of my experience has been in over 50 foot yachts, commercial ships, really "big" machinery, (but, also involved with busses). All of these have the commonalities... of an owner(s) dream, a budget, end use, and "real" vs. the unattainable. Starry eyed clients with fat wallets lacking in identity, or lifes' purpose are the worst....As "any" project moves from a fantasy or dream into actual reach, we should call the chaplain, a good shrink, and consider trying drugs, or heavy drinking long before reaching for our check books.A failed, quit on, or abandoned project is usually the result of failing to: de-ego the finances, do the homework, and soul search ... here are some of my inputs regard...

INSULATING A BUS … I GOT GOADED INTO WRITING THIS, Bus interior habitation should be viewed as comparable to marine habitation, and NOT, mimicked from any RV heritage. Owning a sKOOLie or coach, is like saying sailboat or motor cruiser…the RV denotation goes more with houseboat, pontoon boat, or day sailor…”Whats the difference ?”, useage. RV’s are rented, parked in the driveway for months on end, used for “planned-out/designed” trips, and their use is only “tolerated” by more than one family member…the sparing use makes a full-time “beginner” out of the owner (who cannot log in enough useage continuity to master the techniques), and they serve as wealth symbols parked in the yard, indicating some care-free vagabond/gypsy man-of-leisure life style. ...

A WHAZAMMO' SEZ' ...This is a picture of my poorly maintained Chevrolet Suburban Not much scares me, I mean "really" scares me... (like the dark, viscous dogs, and growing up does), the status of which is actually a problem. Not that I pre- "plan" things out.... but more that I adeptly and instantaneously "adapt" to happenings and events "on demand"; " adapt" meaning respond, as in meaning "squeek out of", as in meaning "whew" ! Lady luck ? fate ? coincidence ? guidance ? .... whatever ! I'll take it. Have taken it, and can only hope there is more of it still left in the jar. What "is" luck though, is the fact I never took flying lessons and got a pilots license !!!! Or, that I never had the money to actually "buy" that Navy surplus J-58 afterburner jet engine that I drooled over for the...

We hired a Buffalo manager ... this is Mira.Spent the week emptying out, and cleaning, and parking , and doing some lay-out sketches, some research, and some beer drinking (as you can see). The snow came back... and I still have to go back to Roseburg to trailer the car home. The cleanup was pretty rough... Mira's sister Ljepa donned her maid's outfit and dug in... but she sure got tired. ...

2007-03-03 18:53:00
The Native Americans used to "sense" the herds moving in close,Today is a 60 degree day... I think there might be Buffalo near !So, tomorrow, off it is .... Roseburg, and looking at the roads, the snow, and our front yard !Which is currently under 4 inches of slush atop 3 inches of water !! a real boot soaker sorta' crap.I cut down the gate post... loaded the "trip kit", and, am ready to shuffle off to Buffalo tomorrow early....Taking the 88 year-old gramma' and the wife, for a possible stampede back to home, "inside" the bowels of a buffalo ! ... sorta' like the dude in the whale, ... (weather and road conditions permitting) more later. maybe... the "real plan" is to bring her home in three weeks-when winter gives up !This is a trip premature !...

2007-03-02 11:16:00
Way back in mid-January... the Buffalo entered the scene, and the plans started." Bring home the Buffalo " that was the cry ! By the 3rd of March the weather will be broken , and, the roads will be sorta' dry, and, it'll be somewhat warm, and, a lot of the "things" that one may consider for a "maiden voyage" over the Cascades in a 40 foot Buffalo... can be overlooked due to these perfect circumstances.Yea right ! Living at 4,500 feet in a Alpine climate will never allow you to "predict"... I have been over here for 12 years now, and had snow on the fourth of July, gotten sunburned in February, and, have seen weather events that even the folks in town can't believe.SO... I bought the (mandatory ) Oregon chain set for the 22.5 bus tires, got the Insurance...

COMBUSTION CHAMBER INTEGRITY:
2007-02-12 06:00:00
An awful lot of confusion exists on cylinder heads and the issues of containing high compression on 14.0:1 gasoline on up to 22.0:1 Diesel engines…I hope this helps. In this engine area, most failures that occur are cumulative…meaning they are the result of a long calendar of events that finally get together to bite you in the butt-either in competition, on the job, or out on the highway. My experience has been that most assembly mechanics simply overlook basics and create these failures-rather than their being the result of poor design, or even parts “failure”, usually it is a lack of understanding the “how does it work?” aspects of combustion containment. Most design parameters give a generous amount of error factor to their...

A WHAZAMMO' SEZ' ...Lime green it was ! Just after 5PM (wintertime) in West St. Paul (on University avenue W.), I missed the MAS auto parts store closing by 5 minutes… as I U-turned the block I saw it. This bike shop was on one of those angle streets, and had four choppers out front; The green one made me stop. He was closing as I walked up, after all it “was” dark ! I said “ that’s really a low bike !” “that’s why they call ‘m lowriders” he dryly responded. When I noticed it was Brit powered, but weird , I bent down to inspect ... “Vincent” he replied, seeing my confusion… ”black shadow, she is, …actually a 1000 cc lightning, 450 pounds wet ! By celebrating my "second" retirement & closing down my Crescent “Oregon Rod Shop” business front this past Sunday ... I am cleansing the last of my “old” (1993 first retirement) companies out... and rearranging “how” and "what" I do as business for 2007, and beyond..."if I even decide to do anything" !!!!My “Oregon Rod & Race Shop” dropped the racing connotation after the "big burglary"... firstly by removing the trackside van from weekly races, then, when it physically moved from Redmond to Crescent in 2004, (simultaneous with also shutting down my Prineville “JEEPETE’z 4WD” shop); So, this decision to change business modes has been evolving for some long time now… and, the reasons are many !So, no more on-vehicle work, public showroom/store-fro...

WHAZAMMO' SEZ' ...Hey ! nice sunny day to do a bumper change.Glad to see you brought the torches... and, ...the new bolts !A no-brainer if there ever was one, that is until that last bolt comes off, and this beast finally gets weight-identified ! wow ! this sucker is heavy !!Once off the car, and during the beer break, if your even "thinking" of leaving it off... well, you know what they'll say, "only toothless, standee-up haired incarnates from West Virginia or Arizona drive around w/o a bumper !" ...well, maybe... shit, this thing looks viscious, maybe even dangerous... I have driven alotta' cars -heard the noise- and never knew where it was coming from. But I "did" always notice the slop when I jacked her up for a tire changeThe bumper engineers at American auto manufacturers have this all planned out; They "begin" by using these cheesy bolts - imported from some unknown west asian country- then reboxed as "made in the USA", notice that they are not a weather resistant material (able to withstand the rigors o...

A WHAZAMMO' SEZ' ...So there we were lost somewhere in radioland 1955...cars were barely 12 volt, so, there was nada available.Methinks Smitty's mufflers got rich on guys who said "F the music, my pipes are the music", and so, started a whole new regime of rodders, in lieu of "the music"; Crissake' a radio weighed 25 lbs back then... that had to hurt 1/4 mile times, right ? So, out it goes ! At one point, it got to "if it has a radio, it aint' no racecar".If you lived where you could get the Tijuana sounds of Wolfman jack, or KOMA, or, better yet...were on the northcoast where rock-n-roll was BIG, and, had a DJ of reknown, like "Big- Mad-daddy,"Smoochie ' Bill Gordon", or "Moondogger" then, music took on a whole different tilt.My father won a Toshiba transistor radio at the plant, gave it ...

MY FAVORITES WERE :Flock of Seagulls, what a hot group ! METAL sorta' began creeping in even in the very late 1960's, stayed back burnered for a long time...then, warped itself into different audiences, and endured, Vin diesel and the first Pink Floyd album are really not that different --to a non devotee/non afficianado type-- there are hundreds of groups to choose from that are/were sucessful, and, I dunno... A WHAZAMMO' SEZ' ...It was one of those late-night "get ready" drag racer deals,I do not remember that we drank that much back then, (it took years of poverty, disappointments, and, skanky women to bring on the beer and booze), but, there was this "urgency" to be ready by 0500 for the hour-long tow to Pomona, and the long waiting line. There really was no scheme to prepping for a day against those Landy mopars, the Thunderbolts and Caliente's, or the Nicholson 409, but, there "was" a "bring it" attitude, this was "serious shit".As I remember, they were stainless steel 1/4" X 1/2" hex headed bolts. The time was waning, and we were really trying to do a three hour job in 1/2 an hour...thats when he popped the bolts in his mouth, took an electric drill, and scooted under, there was this zipping...

Things get nutz' at any ROD shop.... remember, there are "lots" of types of rods...
