Chrysler hints at future model reduction strategy
2008-04-21 00:00:41
From the article: “”What we’ll do in our business model is not build similar vehicles on the same platform that kind of look and act like they have the same DNA,” Landry said. “To give you an example: Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro, basically a similar vehicle with different skin and a little bit of different interior; Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango, same platform; Sebring, Avenger, same platform. We’re not going to have vehicles like that. We’re not going to have twin vehicles, one for one brand and one for another.” Aspen vs. Durango Sebring vs. Avenger Caravan vs. T&C Liberty vs. Nitro Here are my picks: Durango Sebring T&C Liberty Chrysler won’t produce mo...

The head of the World Wildlife Fund has come out publicly in favor of the electrification of the world's transportation system. James Leape, director general of WWF International, has declared that cars need to get smaller, lighter and far more efficient. | Daimler to sell Smart car in China next year |
2008-04-20 20:36:25
For Chinese car buyers interested in a Smart ForTwo, the real deal will finally be available. Daimler AG's head of sales and marketing, Klaus Maier, said yesterday that the city car will be available in China starting in the middle of 2009. For a while now, domestic manufacturers have been selling vehicles that look suspiciously similar to the ForTwo (some with a battery-powered drivetrain, see here and here). Daimler has apparently realized there's a market for the city car and Maier told journalists yesterday that, "I am happy to announce that Smart, the original micro compact car, is coming to China next year. If you've spent any time on the streets of Beijing, you know that it is the perfect place for creative solutions t...

GM sending hybrid Escalade to China
2008-04-20 20:19:23
In the face of rising fuel costs and environmental concerns, GM has realized that China, the world's fastest growing auto market, is in dire need of hybrid vehicles of different shapes and sizes. Hence, amidst the re-announcement of the launch of the Buick Lacrosse (which GM is touting as China's first hybrid since it is built there as opposed to the Prius which is merely assembled in China) in July, GM China's vice president for sales, Joseph Liu, let slip that the company would also introduce the hybrid version of the Cadillac Escalade (pictured above) sometime next year. No price tag was mentioned.According to the AP story, Liu also said that GM will follow that up with an "all-electric" car as early as 2010. Although it...

ABG Preview: NOVA Earth Day Special - The Car of the Future
2008-04-20 20:14:48
Tuesday night the PBS science program NOVA will feature an Earth Day look at "the Car of the Future." WGBH, the Boston PBS station that produces NOVA sent us an advance copy of the show to take a look at. Tom and Ray Magliozzi, who are perhaps better known to fans of the NPR show Car Talk as Click and Clack, travel the world from Iceland to China and back to their alma mater at MIT. The "Tappet Brothers" are definitely an acquired taste and not everyone is fan of their shtick on the radio show. However, those who have not acquired that taste need not worry as their presence in Car of the Future is actually fairly minimal. John Lithgow does most of the narration tying the various segments toge...

BMW Z4 with folding hardtop
2008-04-17 01:54:44
It’s another fine day on the test track as a BMW roadster–with some groovy camouflage–zips by. But take a closer look at the photos and you see that this roadster–a redesign for the Z4 that’s due out next year as a 2010 model–has a folding hardtop. Sure, the top on this prototype looks like it is made of fabric, but closer inspection shows that it looks like fabric has been put over the solid roof panels–note the cut line in the roof, near the rear window. Peering past the psychedelic coverings, the new Z4 is gaining a more muscular look and grows about 1 inch in overall length and width. The roadster runs on the same chassis as the recently launched 3 series. BMW plans to fit the new Z4 with more-powerful engi...

New local UAW strike disrupts GM crossover production
It looks like GM can't catch a break lately, as a fresh UAW strike at Alliance Interiors, the automaker's interior parts supplier, disrupted production of its crossover SUVs. The strike involves 90 workers at Alliance, located in Lansing, Michigan, over contract negotiations with the UAW that started nearly one year ago, in May. As a result of the walk-out, production of the Lambda platform CUVs (Buick Enclave, Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia) was halted on Wednesday morning at GM's Lansing Delta Township assembly plant, with partial production slated for the day's second shift, according to a GM spokesperson in an Automotive News report. "We are ready to hold talks any time, any place," said UAW Local 724 Dean Poggiali, "and sit down to work out a deal that is fair and equitable to our members." ...

Early look: 2010 Saab 9-5 sedan illustrated
Some time next year, Swedish automaker Saab will begin production of a redesigned 9-5 Sedan. For the 2010 model year, the all-new 9-5 will take on an Aero-X-inspired look, while building on the existing model's somewhat angular roofline. Saab general manager Steve Shannon recently told dealers the company would reveal the new 9-5 later this year at a major auto show, according to trade publication Automotive News. Saab enthusiast website Trollhattan Saab has speculated the most likely venue is the 2008 Paris Motor Show in October. Also according to the website, the new model will have larger engines, increased overall dimensions, and will be a "true flagship" for the automaker. Some reports indicate the range-topping model will have up to 350 horsepower. The new 9-5 will ride on a modified version of GM’s Epsilon II platform, which also underpins the new Saturn Aura. Expect it to have firmer suspension, improved...

Check here for our latest round of updates and you'll see that the Volt is moving along quite nicely. Still, there's a long way to go before the vehicle is ready for the road. The test track though, as you can see in the photo above, is another story entirely. According to Brenda Priddy's spy photographers, the Volt's E-Flex underpinnings are currently being tested cloaked under last-generation Malibu bodywork. We knew they'd be coming and are glad to see some visual proof. The production Volt will be based on GM's Delta platform, not the Malibu's architecture. The mu...

China passes U.S. as largest polluter
While the Chinese market might be emerging as the savior for the Big Three — as well as several of the world's other automakers — the downside of a country as large as China mobilizing is quickly being realized. According to a new study, China has surpassed the U.S. as the world's largest polluter. Moreover, the study — which was conducted by the University of California — indicates that previous records were vastly underestimated and that China could have actually overtaken the top spot as early as 2006. The study also finds that any emissions cuts made by the U.S and Europe are being negated by China's expanding vehicle fleet and ever-growing manufacturing industry. And there doesn't seem to be any end in sight, either, as China and the UN both think that richer countries should first cut their pollution, and then help poorer nations. Further details of the study are expected to be published in ne...

Magna files lawsuit against Tesla Motors
Just yesterday we reported that Tesla Motors has filed a lawsuit against Fisker Coachbuild, but now comes word that Tesla could be in some legal trouble of its own. Magna — a transmission maker — has filed a suit against Tesla for money it says the electric carmaker still owes it. During the development of the electric Roadster, Tesla ran into some development problems with the car's transmission. The car was originally slated to get a two-speed unit supplied by X-Trac, but that unit had durability issues so Tesla turned to Magna. Tesla subsequently decided not to use the Magna unit and developed its own before eventually deciding on a single speed unit (ultimately the car's electric motor had to be altered). According to AutoblogGreen, Magna isn't upset that Tesla decided not to go with its design, but rather that Tesla never paid them fully for its work — $5.6 million in all. ...

When you buy a sport utility vehicle, you think of power, ruggedness and the ability to take your vehicle off-road and virtually do the impossible. Learning to drive in the UK can be a costly affair. To obtain the skills needed to pass the driving test, practical as well as the driving theory test, the average person is looking at a bill of around 800.Most of this cost is taken up by paying for professional driving lessons. Due to this cost many learner drivers supplement paid for lessons by taking free tuition from family and friends. In fact it is not unusual for a learner driver to spend more time driving their own or a family members car than that of their driving schools . This often leads the learner to feel more confident driving their own car than that of their driving schools. Hence the increasing amount of learners who are choosing to take the practical driving test in their own cars. If th...

Sure, we occasionally have ridden around in the belly of a limo for weddings and what not, but those rentals are nothing like the real thing. According to The Chauffeur magazine, the best £50,000 to £100,000 car to be driven in is a hybrid, the Lexus LS 600h L to be exact. Powered by a hybridized V8 engine, the long-wheelbase Lexus flagship's rear seat is surely a nice place to sit back and relax, but one of the reasons the vehicle was chosen has to do with its economy... fuel economy that is. Sure, the reclining rear seats with shiatsu massage may have had something to do with th...

Ford to revive SVT namplate on Raptor F-150?
Ford hasn't marketed a vehicle under the Special Vehicles Team nameplate — car or truck — since 2004, but that could change when the rumored Ford Raptor F-150 hits the market. A new report has surfaced indicating that Ford will revive the SVT nameplate to affix to the rear of the Raptor when it finally makes production. According to Four Wheeler Magazine, Ford is preparing to knock the dust off the SVT badge for use on the new Baja-esque truck. Of course the SVT badge is no stranger to the F-150 as Ford produced the SVT Lightning from 1993-2003. The boys at the Blue Oval also showed a concept Lightning version of the 2004-2008 F-150, but it never made it to production. SVT engineers aren't quite as dusty as the SVT badge — they helped in the development of the Ford Mustang GT500 KR and the Ford GT supercar. However, the revival of Ford's performance division has to be taken with a grain of salt as Ford ...
