Audi Q5 Custom Concept Revealed for Worthersee Tour 2009
2009-06-02 09:02:00
The 28th Wörthersee Tour in Austria kicks off on May 20 and ends on the 23rd. The show is a gathering of auto enthusiasts, including those who love the Audi brand. For the latter a special Audi Q5 will be showcased on the Audi stand.Clad in massive 21-inch wheels with a 7 twin-spoke design, the vehicle is no ordinary Q5. Its track has been widened by 90mm (3.54 inches) while the ride height is 60mm (2.36 inches) lower. The exterior paint colour is called Daytona Gray. Some red paint applications were made on the rims, the roof rails, the front skirt and the rear spoiler. Other fittings include a panoramic roof and ceramic brakes. There is an S4 connection to this Q5 in that the engine is the same supercharged 3.0 TFSI V6 that powers the S4. Power is not the same 246kW (334hp) though, it ha...

First Drive: 2010 Jaguar XFR, XKR and one of the best V8s on the market
2009-06-02 08:57:00
About 20 minutes after heading south towards the Mediterranean, traffic on our four-lane roadway stops abruptly. The bus we have just passed pulls up on our right and an officer is standing in the middle of the roadway, waving the morass of motorists through – until we reach the head of the pack. He points at us, then motions towards an unpaved turnout where a handful of squad cars are accompanied by a dozen police officers. We pull the white, droptop XK into the dirt lot, twist the rotary shifter into Park and within seconds we're being berated by a young officer with "CADET" embroidered across his upright baseball cap. Our French is about as good as our Klingon, so after realizing we don't speak the native tongue, he snatches our documents and leaves us to stew.A few minutes pass, at wh...

First Drive: 2009 Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic
2009-05-14 10:37:00
Marcello Mastroianni has been reincarnated as the Maserati Granturismo S Automatic. Suave good looks. Smooth, effortless acting. This big, handsome sport coupe is the cinematic black-and-white Mastroianni, wearing a tipped fedora and dark shades of Fellini's "81/2" or "La Dolce Vita."As its name suggests, the Granturismo S Automatic tosses out the Granturismo S' six-speed twin-clutch paddle-shifted manual for a six-speed paddle-shifted ZF. It also dismisses the S' passive damping suspension for the base Granturismo's Skyhook suspension, "perfect tradeoff between handling and comfort on board," with its aluminum gas dampers. The suspension offers two settings, with a "sport" button that stiffens things up while opening an exhaust flap that turns up the volume on the lovely, throaty-brappy I...

Pics Aplenty: Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce
2009-05-14 09:19:00
We haven't necessarily had a shortage of photos of the Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce. In addition to the first batch of press photos released by Lamborghini, we also captured the super-Murcielago on the show floor in Geneva and once again here in the United States when it stopped by at one of our favorite weekly car gatherings. Even so, our salivary glands went into overdrive when we saw this latest batch of photos of the SuperVeloce. There' s just something about the outrageous over-the-top styling that takes us back to being a teenager.Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce – the new king of the bulls is even more powerful, lighter and faster. The Lamborghini Murciélago is one of the most extraordinary super sports cars of all time. Automobili Lamborghini has now exp...

First Test: 2009 Lotus Exige S 260
2009-05-14 09:14:00
Caution: This feature is designed for competition use, and as such, its employment will invalidate vehicle warranty on any components subject to the extreme loads associated with racing/drag starts. This was the first sentence on the sheet given to us on how to use the launch control system on the 2009 Lotus Exige s 260, needless to say, we all had a laugh when we read this. To have a feature on your vehicle that, if you use and damage something, your warranty becomes void is rather frustrating. Especially since the test numbers Lotus is claiming were obtained using the launch control system. This reminds us of another vehicle (cough * GT-R * cough) that had a launch control that if used and something was damaged, your warranty was void, they got rid of it, Lotus, take a hint.So this leaves...

BMW considering range of two-, three- and four-wheelers for Project i
2009-05-14 09:00:00
Back in the summer of 2007, BMW and the University of Bath put their combined heads together and designed a vehicle called the Compact Low Emission Vehicle for Urban Transportation, or Clever for short. Using just three wheels and an engine that was designed to run on compressed natural gas, the Clever concept emitted half the carbon dioxide of normal economy cars.BMW may revisit this design for a future production model under its Project i program, which has the goal of finding new ways to create sustainable models for our transportation needs. The Clever would be just one vehicle in a range consisting of multiple two-, three- and four-wheeled vehicles. As much as we'd love to see a completely electric line from the German automaker, we may be waiting a while. iMotor in the U.K. quotes an ...

The world's fastest BMW coupe? 230 mph G-Power M6 Hurricane CS
2009-05-02 08:11:00
The G-Power crew is constantly striving to produce the most insane BMWs on the planet, combining forced induction with thoroughly revised suspensions and aerodynamics to attain completely unreasonable speeds. It's latest creation, the BMW M6 Hurricane CS, takes the standard set by its M5-based Hurricane RS, and straps a duo of superchargers onto the 5.0-liter V10, boosting the coupe's output to 740 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.Combined with a remapped ECU and a titanium exhaust, along with carbon fiber seats and a few other tweaks to reduce the curb weight by around 100 pounds, the CS can run to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, to 124 mph in 9.6 seconds, 187 in 26 seconds and on to a claimed top speed of 230 mph – making it the fastest road-going BMW coupe on Earth. In addition to the twin supercharg...

REPORT: Audi R8 Spyder coming in 2011
2009-05-02 08:09:00
Pacified as we've been by the appearance of the 5.2-liter FSI V10 and LMS competition spec versions of the Audi R8, it's been a while since we've heard anything about the roadster version. But reports citing unnamed company insiders suggest that the ruthless roofless supercar is scheduled to hit the market by 2011.Since Ingolstadt opts to stick with soft-tops on its other convertible models, the R8 Spyder is expected to follow suit in order to save on space and added weight. Earlier reports suggested a partial convertible targa-style roof opening, but the drop-top flagship is likely to get a more conventional and complete solution. The big question mark remains over whether the convertible variant will be limited to the V8 powertrain or whether it will get the more potent 5.2-liter V10... ...

Auto Review: 2009 BMW 750i
2009-05-02 07:32:00
The BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-class are two vehicles utterly defined by their birthplace. Each was spawned in Southern Germany, where massive stretches of autobahn honed their ability to cover boundless distances at high velocities, cosseting occupants in Teutonic luxury. But they're decidedly different beasts. In spite of their similarities, the two brands have always had distinct personalities. BMW followed its tag-line of the "Ultimate Driving Machine," while Mercedes stuck to its more sober image, focusing on its "Best in German engineering" meme.As so often happens, automakers feel compelled to grow and expand beyond traditional audiences, and at times, the result is a diluted product that strays from its roots. When everyone is attempting to cater to the broadest possible ...

Spy Shots: 2011 Hyundai Sonata interior
2009-05-02 07:15:00
We've already seen the exterior pics of the next Hyundai Sonata, and though the mule was well disguised, it had attractive proportions. What those images didn't reveal was the new Sonata's cabin, but a new spy shot shows a nearly production-ready interior. The first thing that caught our eye in the Sonata interior is the dual cockpit design, giving the driver and front passenger their own living quarters. There also appears to be a smattering of high quality materials, which makes sense given the highly competitive nature of the mid-size segment. Though the steering wheel is partially blocking the center stack, it appears that Hyundai is taking a page out of the Volvo playbook by using similar HVAC controls. Volvo uses the silhouette of a seated occupant in button form, making it easy to ch...
