Cool BMW concept car
2008-06-25 17:11:00
It's a slow news day. You gotta love summer.I came across this video of the BMW GINA concept car. The idea behind this car is that the skin acts more like a malleable cover than a rigid-metallic material that requires all manner of hinges, seams, and joints. You gotta love BMW.Macenstein mentioned that it would be cool to see this sort of design concept in future MacBook models, and that got me thinking. Would this concept work in the mobile space? As sleek as handsets like the iPhone and Touch are, the joints and seams inherent to these handsets, nay, all handsets, keep them from attaining a truly clean design. What if handsets were covered in a material similar to what we see in this video. Morphing handsets with LEDs lighting up from beneath the smooth ...

FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. will use the four-cylinder engines it has jointly developed with French carmaker PSA in BMW brand cars, chief executive Norbert Reithofer said in a pre-release of his interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He said the future generation of the BMW 1 Series will be fitted with these four-cylinder engines. The report said BMW had previously intended to use these engines only in the MINI brand cars. | BMW 1 Series is small but sassy |
2008-04-12 03:19:00
The 1 Series starts at $29,375 but can run north of $50,000. BMW is firm about using premium fuel, which boosts operating costs. But BMW's service intervals are generously long, and free maintenance is provided for four years or 50,000 miles. Nothing unexpected for a BMW. Hey, here's one: the stupid trim pieces on the inside door handles of the test cars, a 128i convertible and 135i coupe. The pieces are mated so that you grab the joining line every time you use the door handle. Unattractive. Rough-feeling. So there. Also, while neither was billed as the premium sound system, the systems in the test cars were stunningly mediocre. OK at lower volume, lame when you crank it even a little.

BMW India has raised the capacity of its manufacturing plant
2008-03-16 04:11:00
Disclosing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, to mark the inauguration of its dealership facility Kun Exclusive here, Peter Kronschnabl, President, BMW India, said the company had invested half-a-million euro to increase the capacity. He said any further scale-up in investment would depend on how the market evolved in India. The capacity increase was done through optimisation of the production facility, he added.Asserting that “there is no standing still at BMW India during 2008,” Mr. Kronschnabl said the company would reach out to customers with services conforming to global standards. BMW, he said, sold 1,387 cars in 2007, exceeding its plan of selling 1,000 cars. The sales target for 2008 was 2,000 cars, he added. “Eighty per cent of cars ...

2008-03-05 17:12:00

Driving the BMW Hydrogen 7
2008-02-29 20:20:00
Today I got a chance to have a spin in the BMW Hydrogen 7. It’s one of only 20 of the hydrogen-powered cars in the world, so I was a little nervous that I might prang it, but luckily all went seamlessly. In fact, apart from a big “H2” in the middle of the dashboard (and a small button on the right of the steering wheel, which you can just about see in this picture)BMW1.jpg you wouldn’t know you were driving anything other than a regular BMW. As my co-pilot and BMW engineer Mario explained, the car runs on a dual-fuel system, which means it can process both regular gasoline and hydrogen (the button on the steering wheel allows a driver to choose; or the engine switches automatically when one tank is empty.) The l...

BMW betting on hydrogen
2008-02-29 10:54:00
The theory goes: Betting on just one -- electric cars or fuel cells -- would be too risky. That's not the party line over at BMW. The German car manufacturer told TED attendees in Monterey Thursday that they are betting the whole hog on hydrogen. "Water is the coal of the future," a big sign in the middle of the room read. It was a reference to the process of extracting the H from H2O, and then using it to power the same internal combustion engines we use today. Turns out BMW started its hydrogen program back in 1978, and as such, they have a ton of research on the topic. Lots of interesting factoids. For example, BMW believes: --The world will hit peak oil in 2025, marking the day the world reaches its peak petroleum production, declining thereafter until we run out. --Technology will allow us to mass-produce hydrogen, without burning fossil fuels to do so, in the next 10 to 15 years.
