Lifestyle in Singapore-Guest post
2008-08-27 05:24:00
This is the first guest post in this blog, introduced as an experiement. As all these years I’ve been writing India based articles, thought of providing some international content to my readers. My engineering classmate SriHari has recently relocated to Singapore for higher studies and he had lots of observations to share about the place from his initial few weeks of stay there. Sharing below,...

Intelligent Scene Recognition is not that intelligent…
2008-08-21 22:03:00
Some digital cameras claim to have a feature called intelligent face recognition and intelligent scene recognition, wherein they automatically identify the primary object you’re trying to shoot and give extra significance to that object and less focus to rest of the objects around. Recently I realized that this “intelligent scene recognition” is not intelligent enough. There were some papayas outside the window and I made an attempt to photograph the same. In the first shot, as you see below, the intelligent scene recognizer decided that it is the window grill that I am trying to shoot and subsequently focused on the window grill, while blurring the papayas in the background.I do not have clear idea how the image ...

Impact Analysis-Live music ban in Bangalore pubs
2008-08-18 05:55:00
Recent topic of debate in Bangalore was the ban on Music">live music performance in pubs by Bangalore police and subsequent protests by those affected by this. I was unaware and ignorant of these developments initially, but happened to learn about it from Sandesh’s blog and Churumuri. I am not a party animal and quite ignorant to issues pertaining to night life, alcohol and related subjects. So was kind of neutral on this issue and didn’t have anything specific to comment/blog upon. However Sandesh urged me to blog on this topic and after reading few discussions at couple of places, including Muziboo and Churumuri, I decided to study the matter a bit and ...

Internet for latest news- A decade ago
2008-08-13 11:19:00
This post, republished here, was originally written on the occasion of OneWebDay and was published at onewebday blog. This write up is basically about how we harnessed the power of internet to bring in a difference a decade ago. Excuse me if this sounds silly today. The year was 1998-99. I was studying in Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalaya (JNV) Udupi district, Karnataka. It was a residential school run my Dept of Education, Ministry of Humar Resource Development. (ideally there’s to be a JNV in every district). Everyday morning the school would assemble before the classes would start and one of the rituals performed during the same was to read the news headlines. Everyday a designated person had to collect news headlines from ...

Indian SNS Yaari.com changes for good
2008-08-13 03:44:00
An year ago, Aug 31, 2007, I had published a post reviewing the Indian social networking website yaari.com and had criticized the same for indulging in unethical practices of tempting users to share their email passwords and subsequently spamming all contacts in their address book with a Yaari invitation, under the identity of the user, without his/her knowledge. You can read that old post here.Recently I visited Yaari.com accidentally and was surprised to see that they have reworked on their site design and have changed for good. Unlike earlier, now one can sign up and explore the site without having to reveal email password. Even when you share email password, Yaari promptly fetches all contacts from address book and displays them in front of you, allowin...

Branding Tender Coconut & Toddy palm
2008-08-09 17:51:00
We’re already used to apples and oranges sporting a small sticker, branding themselves against others. What’s new is that more and more fruits are getting branded this way.Spotted that some roadside vendors on the outskirts of Pondy have started sticking a sticker on tender coconut and toddy palm that they are selling on ECR (East Coast Road)The sticker has provision for a brand name, date (of plucking from tree???), weight and price. Following are the thoughts that ran in my mind after seeing this, which I am sharing with you now in this post.Do you think adding a sticker would fetch additional value? I understand that if we do some kind of processing (cleaning, purification, packag...

Hertz & HSBC-How they lost a prospect....
2008-08-05 20:17:00
2 examples how companies lose prospective customers:Example 1: Hertz car rental company, New DelhiMe: (on phone) Hello Hertz, tomorrow morning 4 AM I need an airport transfer-From a hotel near Nizamuddin to Domestic airport. If that’s possible for you give me a quote.Hertz Rep: Its certainly possible sir, can I have your number please…Me: You don’t have a caller ID? It is 98xxx xxxxx.Hertz: You’re Mr. Shrinidhi Hande right? (See they’re smart enough to store my details- I'd taken their car on self drive earlier)Me: yes, now can you give me a quote for say Indica?Hertz: We charge from Garage to garage sir, for 4 hours/40 kms Indica will be 550 Rs sir, in your case I guess it will be more than 55 kms sir, intersta...

Gender confusion over the name Srinidhi
2008-07-31 19:30:00
Recently I realized, that it’s not only humans, even facebook applications are struggling to recognize the gender associated with my name. Many think Shrinidhi is a female name and address me as Miss Shrinidhi or Mrs Hande… Others who are not sure either avoid gender specific references in the communications or reluctantly ask how I should be addressed.Problem is, my name defies a naming pattern traditionally followed in India. That is, all female names usually end with a vowel, particularly “i” or “a” (Mahishi, Arathi, Madhuri, Rani, Anjali, Savithri, Gouri etc or Asha, Usha, Kannika, Kareena, Karishma, Priya, Prema, Hema, Urmila, Maneesha, Divya, Megha, Radhika, Roopa and so on) and male names usually end without an vowel (when spelt in Engli...

July 2008- Summary & updates
2008-07-31 05:36:00
A total of 12 posts this month, excluding this one-few were popular while others were not. Going by the number of comments received, the idea (patent pending) of selling cashew nuts on board Indigo flight seems to be a hit, followed by the new investment strategy of investing in companies that send thick and heavy annual reports. Kingfisher Experience and Redbus.in review were the other posts which got satisfactory number of comments. Also ran were “Bad experience at Hotel HoneyMoon Inn, Mussoorie”,  “Missing feature in Social networking sites”, "transaction integrity and money transfer in movies" and Kerala/Vizag trip plans (which stands suspended as of now due to multiple reasons) Launched a photo blog this month and also introduced a widget that reads out the post contents...

Service Review: Redbus.in online ticket booking
2008-07-24 12:24:00
Redbus.in is an year and a half old startup by few young entrepreneurs and is funded by Seedfund.in, who call Redbus.in as one of their flagship investments. Bharti Jacob of Seedfund.in said at a Startup Saturday in IIMB that Redbus business volume has reached from 10 tickets a day to nearly 1000 tickets a day. That’s a phenomenal and promising growth for an infant start up. Kudos to Redbus team. With due respects to everyone involved, I recently read in Mouthshut.com several negative reviews about this service and few of my friends also felt they could have got better services had they avoided RedBus. I’ve not verified how legitimate these complaints are but they appear to be written by irate passengers who didn’t ...

Missing feature in social networking sites
2008-07-22 05:49:00
If you’re active on social networking sites like Orkut, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and the likes you will be familiar with mails of following type:ABC is now following you on twitter!XYZ has approved your friend request123@gmail.com has confirmed his/her subscription to your blogSo and so wishes to connect you through LinkedInWhenever someone shows interest in you by some means (friendship request, subscription to blogs, following on twitter, fans and ACs and so on) corresponding social networking sites promptly inform you about the same via mail. But almost all sites do not care to inform you of a lost contact. That is, if someone stops f...

Bad experience @ Hotel HoneyMoon Inn Mussoorie
2008-07-19 18:21:00
We stayed for 2 days in this Hotel HoneyMoon Inn, Mussoorie through a corporate booking and overall experience was not good. Just sharing what all I observed/experienced. Please note that the term "Honeymoon" is just noun and not verb. If you thought going through your company will get you better service here, time to reconsider. The people manning the reception counter of this hotel are cheaters who tie up with other service providers such as car rental agencies and cheat unsuspecting guests. In particular one Mr. Sanjay is the person no one should never trust. He and his assistant attempted to cheat us to the tune of Rs. 15000 when we asked them to book a cab to take us to Hrishikesh, Haridwar and finally drop us at De...

Launching a photo blog
2008-07-18 23:41:00
I’ve decided to launch a photo blog and would be looking for your support and encouragement as usual. The URL is:http://photos.enidhi.net The site is already up and running, with few posts containing some pretty good (so I think) photos. Have a look, I assure you, you won’t be disappointed. Already available posts are: “Cute Squirrels of Agra Fort”, Assembled vehicles of North India, Photos of Agra Fort, photos of our pet cat and photos of Kondapur weekly bazaar. (the last 2 have been moved from this blog) As I’m sitting on hundreds of photos, I aim to spend 10-15 minutes and publish new photos everyday (if not possible, new photos every alternate day guaranteed)Even before the formal launch of my blog, few readers,...

My new investment strategy!
2008-07-16 11:44:00
This one is supposed to be a joke and you’re expected to laugh at the end. Implementation of this strategy at your own risk.I’ve invested in some 40 odd companies (just a thousand or so each-no big amount, and my portfolio is in deep red now). As the financial year ended recently, few of these companies have sent dividend warrants to their esteemed customers like me. While I am wondering why other companies haven’t sent any dividend, most of them have sent me their annual reports, which are thick and heavy books explaining company's operations, profit and loses, assets and liabilities and so on…I picked up couple of annual reports and searched for one specific information-“why no dividends have been sent?” Nowhere in that deep ocean of numbe...

Startup Saturday @ IIM Bangalore
2008-07-14 11:42:00
Met Prateek Dayal and Nithya Dayal last Saturday (12th July 2008). They have been successfully running Muziboo.com, a community website for those associated with music industry (singers, composers and such who would get an audience for their creation as well as feedback and growth potentials). Their site has completed one year recently and is doing well. Muziboo.com: Get An Audience Went to IIMB with them where Startup Saturday meet was going on. It’s a whole new world out there. Most of them in the age band of 20-30, but their visiting cards read CEO/Director/Vice President/Managing Partner/Chairman of their respective companies-the fancy titles of which regular employees spend their entire career dreaming about. The conversations predominantly consisted of phrases like “When are ...

Transaction Integrity & Money transfer scenes in movies
2008-07-13 18:27:00
If you’re in the field of IT you must be familiar with the term Transaction Integrity, which is basically ensuring that an online activity is either 100% successful or completely declined. If that sounds confusing, here’s a simple example-you might have tried online money transfer-Supposed you are transferring Rs 10000 to a friend-have you ever faced a situation that only 5000 is transferred and rest 5000 is not? That can’t be. Its either entire 10000 is moved successfully or the transaction is declined and all 10k remains in your account. (Well, there’ll be cases where money is debited from one account but not credited to another account-such money gets moved to suspense account and will be returned to rightfu...

My Kingfisher Experience!
2008-07-10 11:54:00
For a moment, I froze.I was watching the screen in front of me onboard Kingfisher flight from Chennai to Delhi on the evening of 4th of July. To my horror it indicated that the plane has crossed Delhi and was heading straight towards the Himalayas. “Oh My God, pilots must be sleeping” was my first thought. (The news of Air India Pilots sleeping while flying from Jaipur to Mumbai and heading towards GOA was still fresh in my mind)Next moment, the screen showed the statistics- Altitude, speed, distance and more. I realized that the aircraft is not at a cruising altitude and speed is pretty low. So it couldn’t be auto pilot. Still, something is wrong…Mount Everest is some 29000 feet in height. Current altitude is too low-Himalaya is nearing-should...

Can I sell cashew nuts inside Indigo Flight?
2008-07-08 21:32:00
Disclaimer: This post explains a theoretical scenario wherein you can earn back the money you spent buying Indigo air ticket. Practical feasibility not known and reader discretion advised. This thought was conceived when I was on Chennai-Mumbai Indigo flight 2 months ago, and perfected during Delhi-Chennai Indigo flight today. Like most of the low cost airlines, Indigo also sells food items to its passengers on board. I am only wishing that I be allowed to sell one particular item on their flight, so that I can you can earn more than what you spent on air ticket.Ok. Without any further delay, let me come to the point. Of so many items they sell on board, ‘flavored’ cashew nut seems to be the most popular and tasty one. Th...

2008-07-04 12:06:00
---Please note that I'll be offline for next few days, but some posts have been pre-scheduled to get published automatically on a specific time---After reading my Mysore Self drive post, few readers expressed interest that they would like to consider joining me in future trips, if found feasible. In this post I am sharing some plans, let me know if you’re interested. What are your plans for Aug 15, 16 and 17? 3 days of leave. (iDay followed by weekend) I have drafted some plans but am doubtful if they will materialize as some participants are showing signs of pulling out. Lazy 2 read?-Just listen-Let me read out my posts 4 u
2008-07-03 19:39:00
If you’re lazy to read my posts, I can read out my posts for you.The new widget you see below (or on top right sidebar) will readout the contents of the post, so that you can turn on the speakers, listen to my posts while doing some other activity-say working out or ironing or cooking or just lying on the bed.If you're unable to see anything below, flash player (or the lack of it) might be the culpritBasically it is a text to speech conversion utility. The accent is decent enough and the utility works just fine, with over 95% accuracy. It skips Indian language texts and struggles a bit while pronouncing Indian names. (It calls me Shrinidhi 'Hand' not 'Hande') Also you won't know if there's an image/hyperlink. Otherwise it is just too good.Saw this in Nikhil's blog and instantly realized...

June 2008-Quick recap of posts
2008-06-30 11:40:00
Can’t believe half of 2008 is already history! The month was great-Me fulfilling a long pending wish of a long drive, Karnataka home minister commenting on my blog, both Desipundit and BlogBharti linking to my Self drive rentals related posts (Thanks 2 Nikhil and Mridula) , me trying my hands on poetry and more. I’m travelling out of Chennai almost every month since past 4 months and the trend is likely to continue for next few months. (Thanks to my Boss at work for necessary leave approvals!) Here're quick notes on posts published during June 2008, for the purpose of not so regular visitors who may wish to have a high level view of all posts. Most popular one was the Chennai-Mysore Self drive post wherein I wrote about the 1300 kms date I had with Skoda Octavia for 3 full days. This po...

I-mint Card-Whatever I do, I DON’T MINT!
2008-06-27 08:27:00
iMint points-Good idea, badly executedImint, in principle, is an excellent idea, but I somehow am not finding it useful. This post offers an analysis of pros and cons of this reward program. The core idea behind the scheme is to encourage people to spend more, that too at certain specific merchants/companies with whom iMint has a tie up. In exchange for your money which is spent at channel partners you will get some points, which when accumulated, can be exchanged for some gifts.IMint started sometime in late 2006/early 2007. It was fully free at that time. I applied and got a card delivered promptly within few days. They also tied up with major players like ICICI Bank, Airtel etc and got access to huge customer base these companied had. All customers of ICIC...

POEM: Shaken, but Not Stirred!
2008-06-25 19:08:00
Trying my hands on a poem for the first time…Nothing personal in this. Wasn't sure how readers will take it. Did a beta release yesterday at Mouthshut and feedback was positive. So with that courage releasing this to my blog readers.Read and tell me if this looks hopeless/average/bad/acceptable… whatever…---Poem Start--- ---Shaken, but not Stirred---I should have kept my coolBut now I feel like a foolI’ll be in town this weekend-said heWhen and where are we meeting? Questioned an eager meWill call you once I land-said heI’ll be eagerly waiting-said meThe person didn’t even had plans of calling meShould I plan for an outing?-asked the stupid meNot sure about outing-said heNot sur...

A tale of abandoned topics
2008-06-24 05:25:00
There were several topics in my mind which I was considering blogging about, but have abandoned them later due to various reasons. This post is a quick intro to few such topics which would have appeared as a post in this blog but unfortunately didn’t/couldn’t.  1 Blogging vs Movie making                 I thought of comparing blogging and movie making, and highlight the similarities. (for example, a. it is difficult to give hit movies all the time and similarly it is not practical to expect each post to be very popular, b. Each movie is released with lots of expectations and hope. The cast and crew await public response eagerly after release-same with blogger-he eagerly awaits what his readers may say on the latest post…and few more...

Self Drive Car rentals in India- A complete Guide
2008-06-16 15:37:00
The concept of self drive is still in a nascent stage in India. Unlike west, manpower is pretty cheap here and coupled with the facts that driving in India is best left to professional drivers, the idea of self drive car rentals doesn’t seem to have really taken off. While in every street you’ll find couple of travel agencies offering Sumos, Qualis and Indicas for rent, the number of car rental agencies who dare to give their machines on self drive is very very few. Also, driving is not considered a respectable job and drivers are treated at par with watchmen, cleaner and such other unskilled or semi skilled jobs. Many of us do not have an idea what self drive is and if that option is really available in India.Recently I took a Skoda Octavia on self dri...

Chennai-Mysore by Self Drive-Dating Skoda Octavia
2008-06-12 08:55:00
“Indulge” is the one word to explain what I did for 72 hours starting June 5 2008 midnight till June 8th 2008 midnight. I took a Skoda Octavia on self drive from Hertz Chennai and drove all the way to Bangalore-Mysore and Back, totaling over 1300 kms in 3 days. This post is an experience account of this excursion. Most of my friends and relatives know that I love driving. Beg/borrow/steal I try to get my hands behind wheels at every available opportunity. Many have handed over their keys to me hesitantly while few have said polite but firm NO when asked if I can drive their car a bit. Have driven several vehicles so far, such as WagonR, Mahindra Utility and Pickup, Accent, Esteem, Indic...

Saligrama Makkala Mela performs Yakshagana at Infosys Mysore
2008-06-09 19:44:00
Yakshagana is a folklore art popular in coastal Karnataka. It is a mix of dance and drama wherein a particular part (episode or Prasanga) of some popular story (say Mahabharatha) are enacted with unique costumes, background music and a combination of dance and drama. Saligrama Makkala Mela (ಸಾಲಿಗ್ರಾಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಮೇಳ) is a troupe of child artists who learn Yakshagana from its founder H. Sridhar Hande. Unlike other troupes or bands members of Makkala Mela team keep changing- Children grow up and eventually leave the team due to various reasons including studies. So Sridhar Hande continuously need to keep looking for youngsters, train them from scratch and make them perform on stage.Makkala Mela was founded in 1975 and the troupe has toured all over the world, in...

Karnataka Home Minister Dr. VS Acharya comments on my blog post
2008-06-08 23:07:00
Yesterday Morning I was in for a pleasant surprise-Was checking my mails in gmail and saw a comment from Dr. VS Acharya. (for my Coco Fresco Hyderabad post, wherein I had described a new approach adopted to promote tender coconut) The name sounded familiar-went to blogger profile and subsequently to his blog. As suspected, it turned out to be the blog of the very person who had taken oath as Cabinet Minister along with Karnataka CM Mr. B S Yadyurappa a week ago and was assigned the portfolio of home ministry less than 24 hours earlier. (He was minister for Medical Education earlier).Never expected politicians to be tech savvy and have a blog. (Do SM Krishna, known for his IT friendline...

Innovations-Upadhya's tender coconut opener!
2008-06-08 19:16:00
This post is triggered by a comment from Hon'ble Home minister of Karnataka Dr. V S Acharya. [Comment here, details in this post]. I had seen this device long back but I guess I didn't have a blog then. Recently saw it again in my uncle's house and yesterday a comment prompted me to write a post about this.Traditionally it takes a relatively strong person and substantial physical effort to chop off the tender coconut and take out the water. Ever wished for a simple tool to open tender coconut? Heres one.Invented by Upadhya brothers (P Venkatramana Upadhya & Manjunatha Upadhya) of Saligrama, a town 24 kms north of Udupi, Karnataka, this small and trendy tool can drill through a tender coconut within a minute. To see how to use it watch the video belo...

Ups & Downs of my blogging
2008-06-02 22:46:00
This post shares few ups and downs I faced during past two years of my blogging: 1 The MLM Supporters Any talk on network and multi level marketing will be potentially controversial. When I wrote couple of posts on MLM (12 reasons why MLM cos go wrong * QuestNet reopens as Lotus marketing in Srilanka * Amway Inside story * An analysis of MLM companies) as expected there were lots of comments which criticized my stand. But then, I received couple of communications wherein someone sent detailed arguments and wanted to meet me in person and explain why & how their business is genuine and legitimate. Few wanted me to attend their presentations to understand the business properly. One thing common among these people was that they agreed that a particula...

2nd anniversary-Belated anniversary wishes to my blog
2008-05-26 03:31:00
While talking with Raveesh today realized that I have missed second anniversary of this blog. On May 22nd this blog completed 2 years of existence. In one my earlier posts this month I had written about the upcoming birthday but forgot on the celebration day.Better late than never, belated 2nd happy birthday to my blog...Here's the first post that was published 2 years ago. Two years of blogging was great experience-Given that there're bloggers around us who are into blogging since as early as 1998-2000, me still an infant in this arena. Nevertheless blogging did take me to couple of places (Coorg, Manipal and Mumbai) and allowed me to have an online identity for myself. More than 200 people visit this blog daily with c...

3 mistakes of my life-Chetan bhagat-book review
2008-05-25 07:49:00
Bought the recently released Chetan Bhagat’s “The three mistakes of my life” from Odessy and finished reading in Half a day. Here’s a quick book review and some flaws I found in the book.Just like the previous Chetab Bhagat books, 5 point someone and 1 night @ call centre, the three mistakes of my life also makes an interesting reading-Is a story of 3 Gujarati youngsters in first person narration of Govind Patel . Stated to be based on real incidents and syncs with real life incidents like Gujarat earthquake, 9/11 attack, Godhra sabotage and riots etc, as well as some cricket matches. The book effectively portrays the thinking process that goes on in young minds and clubbed with unique style of Chetan’s storytelling and effective customization with...

SBI finally accepts me as a customer
2008-05-19 12:12:00
