Credit Card Users Win Cash
2008-01-03 03:12:00
Tens of millions of credit card users received letters in the mail over the past couple of months informing them that they may be eligible for a refund of the currency conversion fees paid during overseas transactions. The settlement was the result of a lawsuit alleging that Visa, MasterCard, and Diners Club did not disclose the 1 to 3 percent fees they charged on foreign transactions. The paperwork, though, can be somewhat confusing. Some recipients even suspected the mailing was fraudulent. To help you figure it out, here are answers to some common questions about the lawsuit.

2007-12-22 14:11:00
More than 50 percent of Maryland college students and families with "unmet financial need" use credit cards to cover education costs, according to a recent survey by the Maryland Higher Education Commission.State officials and experts called the findings a troubling echo of a national trend, though some financial aid authorities said that when used responsibly credit cards do not necessarily lead to unmanageable debt."This is a very dangerous way of paying for higher-education costs," James E. Lyons Sr., state secretary of higher education, said in a statement yesterday.

Hey, Taxi! Do You Take Credit Cards?
2007-12-15 00:56:00
Credit card machines have now been installed in about half the city’s nearly 13,100 yellow cabs; all taxis are scheduled to have them by Jan. 31. From time to time, we have heard complaints about drivers refusing to take credit cards, or claiming that the machines were broken (some readers have posted complaints here on City Room). So the Metro Section decided to investigate. We sent out five reporters with instructions to try 20 trips each. They fanned out in Manhattan, boarded cabs and asked cabbies the question, “I’ve only got a credit card, is that O.K.?”We expected some resistance. Taxi drivers walked off the job twice in two months this year, largely because of new machines that

Lower Your Credit-Card Rates
2007-11-29 12:33:00
I read your article about Coping With Credit-Card Rate Increases and was wondering if there's any chance I can talk with my credit-card companies and try to get them to lower my rates? I know that you've recommended that strategy in the past. You're right -- it never hurts to ask the credit-card company if it will lower your rate. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't.The strategy worked quite well for reader Sam Sweet of Erial, N.J., who recently succeeded in getting three major card companies to roll back their rate increases on his cards.

PayPal's payment service is likely to show up on a lot of unusual sites this holiday season. On Nov. 20, PayPal released tools that let online shoppers use its service nearly everywhere online, even in cases where the merchant doesn't accept PayPal. Online shoppers can download a toolbar that lets them use a temporary Mastercard number when making a transaction. Payments are then withdrawn from the user's PayPal-linked credit card or bank account.

Slow Rise in September's Consumer Credit

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumers borrowing increased in September at the smallest pace in five months as the growth in credit card debt and car loans slowed. The Federal Reserve reported Wednesday that consumer credit rose at an annual rate of 1.8 percent in September, the slowest since April's 1.6 percent mark. The September gain was about half what economists had expected. The sluggish growth reflected lower rates of increase for auto loans and credit card debt. That debt had risen sharply in recent months as consumers started borrowing more heavily on their credit cards once home refinancings slowed

Gift Cards with a Personal Touch
2007-10-29 11:55:00
Visa's new cards represent the latest attempt to win back some of the billions that have been siphoned off from the traditional credit-card business. All the major card companies--American Express (AXP ), Visa, MasterCard (MA ), and Discover (DFS )--already sell gift cards of some kind. And no wonder: Spending on gift cards has grown at a 20% annualized rate since 2005, compared with about 7% for credit cards. More than 75% of all consumers are expected to receive at least one gift card this year, analysts say. The overwhelming share of that, however, goes to cards issued by stores, restaurants, and other such businesses.

The banks cited sealed testimony taken from officials at the two largest credit card networks. A Visa official also put fraud losses to banks and other institutions that issued the cards at between $68 million and $83 million on Visa accounts alone, the filing states, the most specific estimate of losses t

Canada has become a house of cards – credit cards – and the glue that holds them together is loyalty rewards programs. As a nation, we carry more than 50 million of those brightly coloured bits of plastic in our wallet and every time they are used, Canadians tuck away points that can be redeemed for everything from airfare to toilet paper. The proliferation is staggering. MasterCard Canada alone says it has 626 individual card issuers and, with about 30 million cards now in circulation, it controls more than half the market. It may seem like another new card hits the street every month. One of the most recent is GE Money's MuniCard, which lets homeowners in Vaughan pay property tax bills with rewards points.

If your child has a pre-paid credit card, or if you have a prepaid credit card that your child could have access to, then you might want to read this. According to The Observer, children today are using pre-paid credit cards to fund alcohol, porn and to gamble online. When you purchase anything online it simply asks you for your date of birth and your credit card number. Very rarely do you have any other checks regarding your age. So this leaves a big opportunity for children under the age of 18, to purchase things that they really shouldn’t.

Credit cards may look alike, but when it comes to how pleased people are with their plastic, the differences are dramatic, according to a recent Consumer Reports' reader survey. And it's not only because of interest rates, which vary widely from one card to another. Readers found major differences in customer service, billing headaches and hidden fees. The survey, conducted by the Consumer Reports' National Research Center, was based on more than 36,000 readers' experiences with nearly 62,000 credit cards. USAA Federal Savings, the Navy Federal Credit Union and a group of other credit unions scored the highest ratings for customer satisfaction. | Raising the age limit on credit cards |
2007-09-09 21:19:00
With the debt crisis being as critical as it currently is, debt management groups are blaming part of the problem on younger credit card applicants. They say that by upping the age limit on credit cards, it will help to stop the younger generation from getting into so much debt. So just why do younger people have such a problem with credit card debt? Well it seems that it is down to irresponsible spending. Younger people do not have much of a grasp on credit cards and the trouble they can get themselves into. Money has never really been an issue for many people aged from 18-24 and in many cases they are still living with their parents. So they do not have much of an idea of responsibl

• Well, here's a simple one: Pay your balance in full. It's much easier said than done, but there's no question that you should, if you can. You don't want to pay interest on your purchases.• Don't be fooled by a teaser rate. These flirtatious rates are temporary. Credit-card companies try to dazzle consumers into applying for a credit card with offers of 0% APR, or annual percentage rate. Savvy consumers can take advantage of these rates, but just be sure you know how long they last, and what that pretty rate will morph into after it expires.

2007-09-03 02:53:00
A number of traders believe that households struggling to meet the soaring interest costs on their mortgage payments will use their credit cards to pay the debts in the short term. That could put credit card repayments under pressure alongside mortgage payments. If consumers begin to miss payments on credit cards, many of these CDOs could have their credit rating cut. Given that those CDOs have been used as collateral against other debts in the market, that could spark a fresh bout of contagion in the market.

To do so, you will typically have to call a number or send a letter to the company by a certain date. In many cases, customers will be able to pay off any balances under existing terms, although you may be forced to close the accounts.A number of lenders are tightening their credit standards and raising fees given concerns over a slowing economy and a changing interest-rate environment. Following a report last April from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), which revealed banks were issuing unlawful penalty charges amounting to more than £300 million each year, the credit card industry has been under increased scrutiny. In March this year, the OFT decided to step up its informal monitoring to a full-on study, having received hundreds of thousands of customer complaints since its first warning.Unsurprisingly, industry figures gave a cool response to the findings, but consumer watchdog Which? was more welcoming, expressing 'delight' at the acknowledgement that "credit card companies have been fleecing their customers with unfair, sky high credit card charges" for years.

Credit cards are a convenient way of paying bills and covering daily expenses, but they make it far easier for the financially challenged to carelessly increase debt, cripple their credit rating or fall prey to identity thieves. In the book "On My Own Two Feet," Manisha Thakor and Sharon Kedar, both chartered financial analysts, offer seven guidelines for responsible credit card management:• Watch those interest rates! Credit card companies often lure clients by offering low interest rates in the beginning. But these rates tend to shoot up after the introductory period expires. You need to prepare your undergrad for the onslaught of credit card offers that bombard today's coeds when they reach campus. When I got my first credit card, I was a freshman in college and utterly broke. Dangling the promise of $500 was like offering a trip to Hawaii to someone who didn't have bus money to ride around town. Suddenly, I could join friends in their quest to find Williamsburg's best all-night diner, offer gas money when we went on road trips, and get my hair cut by someone other than my roommate.
