System Admin's should know Windows Server 2008 Netsh commands
2011-12-12 00:27:49
Introduction
I have written a number of different Netsh
articles and other authors have published their own Netsh articles. This
just shows how important and innovative Netsh really is. In this
article, I will cover 10 Netsh commands that every Windows admin should
know. In my opinion. Netsh is so powerful and flexible; I cannot choose
the “most important” Netsh commands as the importance of a command will
vary from admin to admin. What I can do is to choose the 10 commands
that I feel will either show you valuable information or will help you
out when you are in trouble. Keep in mind that these commands can be
scripted (as they are all command line tools) so whatever you can do
with just an individual command on a single machine, you could write a
script to perform that command on all machines in your network.
What is Netsh?
Microsoft Windows Netsh is a command line
scripting utility. With Netsh, you can view or change the network
configuration of your local com...

Trick:Identify stale Active Directory computer accounts with dsquery
2011-06-28 05:05:44
One frustrating housekeeping task for Active Directory is ensuring that old computer accounts (usually servers, desktop PCs, or laptops within Active Directory) are removed. A quick look at the Object tab of a computer account will tell you when the update sequence number (USN) was updated, but not the last time the computer logged into the domain.
Some possible reasons why stale computer accounts get into Active Directory include a test virtual machine is disposed, an old server is retired, or a server is upgraded and the old one is held onto just in case.
There are a couple of ways to identify whether a computer account in Active Directory is stale. The approach I recommend is setting up a policy for your Active Directory domain that explains the rules; basically, if a computer account of any type doesn't log on for a specified amount of time, the computer account may be subject to removal.
The issue here is remote systems, such as a laptop where the corresponding user ...

Kn(H)ow to Install the Hyper-V Manager feature in Windows Server 2008 R2
2011-06-14 04:38:42
The Hyper-V Manager feature can be installed on any Windows Server 2008 system. If the Hyper-V Server is Hyper-V 2008 R2, I recommend only attempting to manage that class of hypervisor on Windows Server 2008 R2 systems.
When it comes to deploying Hyper-V servers, there are two main options: install the standalone Hyper-V hypervisor or add the Hyper-V feature to a supported Windows Server 2008 R2 server. I'm going to take the separation approach as I venture into Hyper-V and use the standalone Hyper-V hypervisor instead of the full installation of Windows Server 2008 R2 and adding the Hyper-V role.
The Hyper-V standalone install is a single-purpose, standalone distribution. It loosely resembles Windows Server Core, and can be plugged into all of the management frameworks, including Group Policy, PowerShell, Hyper-V Manager, System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), and Remote Management.
The Hyper-V Manager tool is the simplest way to manage a Hyp...

Learn to Disable Server Manager and Initial Configuration Tasks via Group Policy
2011-06-14 04:16:59
When I see the Server Manager tool and the Initial Configuration Tasks panel in Windows Server 2008 R2, I don't always remember to click the box that says" Do Not Show Me This Console At Logon", therefore, I keep closing it or needlessly seeing the tools during my logon process.
Further, if a new administrator logs in to the server, these two tools are presented on the first logon. You can get around the needless display of these two consoles at logon with a Group Policy setting.
The benefits to suppressing the launch of these two tools are: It will prevent an accidental configuration, such as removing a role or inadvertently changing Windows firewall status, and it will make the logon process a little quicker. It doesn't hurt to suppress these tools; chances are, if a change needs to be made to a server, you will be able to figure out how to launch Server Manager (ServerManager.msc) to perform admin tasks on the server.
The setting for disabling ...

Know to Burn DVDs and CDs free with Windows 7
2011-05-04 00:28:07
One feature that was sadly lacking in Windows before Windows 7 was the ability to burn DVD and CD’s directly from ISO images. This became a huge frustration whenever Microsoft released a beta or release candidate operating system to the public, since it would force you to insall a third party utility to burn the ISO image to disk. Thankfully, Microsoft has now made burning ISOs a built-in feature of Windows 7.
To launch the tool all you need to do is right-click on the ISO image file you want to burn and then click on the “Burn disc image” option.
You then get the following dialogue box that allows you to select which burner (if you have multiple burners) you want to write the image to and if you want to also verify the image once it is burnt.
Then it is just a simple case of clicking on “Burn” and waiting.
Once you are done click “Close” and your disc will be ready.
Now this process will also work on CD and Rewritable media however if you want t...
