Hong Kong cinematographer Gigo Lee has jumped on the Beijing Olympics bandwagon by directing a low-budget tribute film for the sports gala next year.
The renowned photographer has dedicated his directorial debut to portraying a sporty Tibetan teenager in “Wild Horse in Shangri-La.”
Shooting has recently begun in Kunming, southwest China’s Yunnan province. The much-fabled Shangri-La is located in Yunnan.
The protagonist is a Tibetan teenager with an impressive ability in long-distance running. He is running from his home village to Kunming for a marathon held to hail the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Gigo Lee, who also wrote the screenplay, invited an English-teaching Tibetan he met during a mainland trip to lead the film.
The film is scheduled to finish in late September....

| China to raise reserve requirement ratio by 0.5 percentage points |
| 2007-07-31 11:44:54 |
China will raise the reserve requirement ratio by half a percentage point to 12 percent for commercial banks from Aug. 15, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) announced on Monday.
“The move does not come as a surprise seeing as almost every economic index is overheating,” said Song Guoqing, an economist with Beijing University.
“However, half a percentage points is not enough — it can’t even absorb the newly-added foreign exchange reserves,” Song added.
“China’s forex reserves go up by about 30 billion U.S. dollars a month while loans of commercial banks totaled 25 trillion yuan at the end of June,” Song explained. “This means that a half-percentage point rise can only absorb 125 billion yuan a month.”
China’s gross domestic product (GDP) rose 11.5 percent in the first half, after it grew 11.9 percent in the second quarter, according to official data.
This is the sixth time China has raised the reserve requirem...
