fashion disaster - big white bag
2008-05-09 19:52:00
Here's a scene from New York's subway:Some people stand, some people sit, some people sleep. And a woman is carrying a bag way too big for her, in a color way too bright for the rest of the outfit. Can you spot her?...

what to wear to a wedding
2008-05-05 20:10:00
Fashion challenge results are in: I asked you what to wear to a wedding, and to come up with two different outfits, one for day and one for a night wedding. This is D. ready for a day wedding. While wearing white to a wedding is tricky, because you don't want to upstage (upset) the bride, I think that D. wouldn't have a problem with the dress she has picked. Its beauty lies in its simplicity. It is white, yes, but the dark trimmings make it less of a wedding dress and more of just a pretty dress. So the bride will not have a fit when she sees another white dress... ;)This is me wearing something bright and cheery, because weddings are a celebration and an excellent excuse to make a fashion statement.Short, pretty and colorful ...

martin + osa
2008-05-02 06:00:00
Here is a new and refreshing brand on the market:Martin + Osa.Developed by American Eagle Outfitters, Martin + Osa's signature style is "refined casual".I had the pleasure of attending their fashion party here in New York where I was able to take a closer look at the clothes and also exchange a few words with the exquisitely cordial Laura Dubin-Wander, CEO of Martin + Osa.She explained to me how Martin + Osa was born to complement its parent company, American Eagle Outfitters: while AEO caters to a younger crowd, M+O targets a thirty something crowd; and while the casual element will still reign in both brands, M+O definitely prefers the more luxurious feel of cashmeres and silks. And since I am in my thirties (their targeted audience), I can tell you that they have achieved what they were ...

fashion challenge - spring wedding wear
2008-05-01 11:08:00
I am going to make this a challenging challenge! ;)This time of the year I get a lot of emails regarding what to wear to a Spring wedding. I've already written something about this in the past, but I like to refresh posts with current fashion trends. So here is your double challenge: 1. What would you wear to attend a casual day wedding?2. What would you wear if the wedding took place in the evening?Send your pictures to nyspender@gmail.com by tomorrow, Friday 8PM EST....

t3 tourmaline narrow wet to dry flat iron
2008-04-29 18:52:00
I was given the opportunity to test-drive a flat iron from Misikko's website.I already own two flat irons, but I've never bought anything too expensive, because I didn't want to spend too much money on something I shouldn't be using regularly anyway. The oldest iron I have is really old school (read crappy), and I would be afraid to use it now (I wonder why I haven't thrown it out yet?)The newer iron has ceramic plates, but it never really did the job right, I think because it never got hot enough, so I haven't used it in a long time.My hair is thin and wavy, which means I cannot, and I repeat, cannot just wash it and go. I need to dry it. To straighten it. With an iron, with a blow drier, with something. The times I go to bed with wet hair, I wake up with Felicity's curls, but only from my ...

colored contact lenses
2008-04-26 10:58:00
I've always been fascinated by colored contact lenses.I've occasionally changed my color from brown to blue, but I was never completely satisfied with the results, because the brown would always come through the blue lenses, and you were able to tell that they were colored contacts.Today I discovered something that probably the rest of the world already knows, but since I don't (try not to) read gossip columns, I just didn't know: Paris Hilton's real eye color is brown. For some reason, this newly discovered useless piece of information has struck a chord with me:1. It gave me hope that it is possible to find natural looking blue lenses for brown eyes.2. It made me sad because here is a girl that has completely repudiated ...

fashion challenge - girly results
2008-04-25 20:44:00
How pretty, how pretty, how pretty this post is!!!I asked you to come up with a girly look and you delivered! :)Our first model is K.This is a classic girly look: a delicate dress in soft colors - pink :) - flirty, flowy and romantic.Just add a sweet smile, and nobody will be able to resist you.Next on the runway is G.Her interpretation is of a modern girly: the focal point is still a pretty dress, but the shorter length symbolizes a cut with tradition (not as innocent, not as naive). And she traded the pink flowers for animal prints, giving the whole look a more aggressive tone. She is a woman, hear her roar! ;)Lastly, here is D.Her girly is the city girly. It's a girly that knows how to be girly without getting too girly. It's a working girly. It's a busy girly. A practical girly, if y...

fashion disaster - season appropriate
2008-04-22 18:25:00
People it's almost May!Please, please, please put away the fur!Yes I know it's still cold in New York, but there's no snow out there to justify such winter gear. And the boots... ah! the boots! The picture doesn't do justice to the boots: it's like watching a horror movie with a blanket on your head (and covering your eyes), everything looks fuzzy and not as scary.I wish I could lift the blanket out of this picture and scare the beejeezus out of you!Unfortunately, you are only left to imagine the unnatural mishmash of leopard print and brown suede that walked by me one sunny day......

fashion challenge 2 - results
2008-04-18 21:59:00
I asked you to: Dress up your jeans. Wear your favorite pair of blue jeans, and then dress them up so that the resulting outfit is something you could wear to a fancy night out. Here Getri is keeping it very simple: tight jeans, a tank top, and a pair of sexy stilettos. She also has pretty earrings on but you can't really see them.Notice how even though I said blue jeans, she picked a pair of black ones. They are definitely easier to dress up than blue ones, because they can pass for regular pants, and you have the added benefit of "jeans fit".Getri did the right thing: forced to pick jeans for a fancier occasion, she steered away from the blue ones; but I would have gone a little "crazier" on the top.So I tried the "blue" jeans. What I did different than Getri was to wear a more elaborate t...

reader's question - chanel handbag
2008-04-15 22:32:00
Hello NY Spender, my wedding anniversary is coming up (13 years!), and I think I will ask my husband to get me as a present my first Chanel handbag. Do you know of any places where I can buy a Chanel handbag online? A.Dear A.,Chanel handbags are one of the few designer handbags that are very difficult to find online. Very few stores carry them, one of them is Bluefly, and even then, it's never guaranteed that you'll find what you are looking for.Another option would be to check on bagborroworsteal.com, I've already reviewed them here a while ago. The main scope of their business is to have you borrow a bag for some time, but there is also the "steal" deal: you can purchase "gently used" designer handbags at a discounted...

erth mineral makeup
2008-04-12 19:42:00
Up to now, I had never used mineral makeup. I had heard so much about it, and I was very curious to try it, but I wasn't even sure which brand I wanted to try first. This is where Erth Mineral Makeup came in to save the day! :)After discussing my skin color and undertones with a representative over email, I received more samples than I could ever wish for! And you know me... I love to share, so I turned lunch-hour into mineral-fest at my office!Watch NY Spender put her makeup-artist hat on! ;)My first victim was Sharon.Because I didn't have any previous experience with the "minerals", I played it safe and very natural. You can barely see any makeup, but her face looks even-toned and has a glow. For this look I used the Foun...

fashion challenge 1 - results
2008-04-11 20:59:00
The "Fashion Challenge" results are in:I asked you to pick two different colors (skipping the neutrals) and pairing them to create an harmonious look. Here is Dee wearing pink and brown. An excellent choice!Since her pink is bright, it brings vitality to the brown. The two color complement each other without clashing.Truth about this challenge is that you can't pair any two colors and always be successful. There are some pairs that definitely work better together than others.Pink and brown is a successful pair. And here I'm wearing another winning combination: red and blue.Lovely lipstick, isn't it? ;)Another thing to notice when pairing different colors is to try and balance them out if necessary. The shiny red of the s...

fashion challenge 1
2008-04-10 18:28:00
Since I've been talking about doing different things on NY Spender, and I always love readers' suggestions, today I'm officially launching the "Fashion Challenge" series.Every so often, I will ask you to challenge your fashion sense, to think outside the "closet", to break a style rut...To make it more interesting, I would love to see some pictures! :)You don't have to include your face, just your body, and, if I get enough participants, I can make the Fashion Challenge a staple of this blog (and hopefully give away prizes to the winners). The first Fashion Challenge:Pairing different colors when wearing separates is usually easy if you stick to the same hue:and if you use neutral colors like black (or white, or khaki....

michael kors handbags
2008-04-08 22:55:00
Not too long ago I blogged about colorful handbags for this Spring.Well, I stopped by Macy's the other day and I fell in love with another handbag color: gold. Now the gold color I am talking about, is not the usual bright and harsh gold from the past, and still present on the shelves like this one on top:MICHAEL Michael Kors Joplin Medium Shoulder Satchel$448.00The gold I am in love with is a softer one, like this on theMICHAEL Michael Kors Brookville Medium Bowling Bag$328.00Think of it as if gold and silver had babies. :)I actually fell in love with pretty much every other Michael Kors handbag in there!Michael also has the best looking yellow hobo around!MICHAEL Michael Kors Ranger Wild Venus Large Hobo$348.00All things considered, their prices are no...

win a shabby apple dress!
2008-04-05 19:48:00
The philosophy behind Shabby Apple is simple: to be able to create a complete look with as few pieces as possible. That's why all of their dresses are just one piece. Not tops, no bottoms. Only a dress. Just add accessories. Not only the concept is interesting (not to mention a time-saver!), but the designs are very wearable, simple and original, like this Yorkshire dress.Their prices are affordable, and Shabby Apple donates 5% of their proceeds to support the fight against global poverty. After spoiling my readers with jewelry and accessories, I think it was time we moved on to real fashion. ;)How would you like to win this beautiful Storm dress from Shabby Apple? For a chance to win it, visit Shabby Apple, then come back here ...

new products from the body shop
2008-04-03 11:42:00
As promised, here is a post about the new products from The Body Shop. If you remember, I was lucky to preview them back in February, and these are the ones I loved: The Moringa Body ButterIt smells sooo good!Blushing DaisiesThese blushes are perfect for Spring, and with their shimmer they give you such a pretty glow.Shimmer CubesI loved these so much that I couldn't wait for the new collection and already bought the previous one.The make-up artist at the event mixed the yellow and the green together on a finger and applied it as eye shadow. Then he used the red as blush. And he even added the red on top of another lipstick on the model, for more shimmer.I was amazed by how you can almost get...

fashion fools
2008-04-01 08:16:00
This Spring don’t be a fool:Don’t let it all hang loose! Don’t let the sun shine where it shouldn’t! Don’t turn yourself into an orange mess! Don’t eat your clothes! Don’t wear socks with sandals (are you hot or are you cold?)! Don’t wear socks with flip-flops (are you hot or are you cold?)! Don’t wear UGGS with a miniskirt (ARE YOU HOT OR ARE YOU COLD?!?!?!)! ...

never say never...
2008-03-28 21:44:00
After writing a post about what's the deal with MAC products and why are they so popular, I couldn't pass the MAC store last week without taking a peek inside.Differently from how I used to behave in there a few years ago: I would like to try one of your lipsticks, could you please suggest one?last week I walked in there and I was all like:Yeah, can I get your Plush Lash mascara in black, and also where is the Lipglass, I'd like to pick a color for Spring? Now, mind you, I knew nothing about these two products, except what I had read about them on some of the beauty blogs out there.Well, let me tell you... I love them! The Plush Lash Mascara works very well with my lashes. It hasn't clumped, at least not yet, and it lets me keep applying as much mascara as I want without drying or becoming t...

what to wear with pink shoes - p2
2008-03-24 18:10:00
For a second installment of what to wear with these pink shoes, today we'll explore if they can be worn with jeans.A first "safe" way is to match the shoes with the top, while the jeans play their "cool and unassuming" part.I picked skinny jeans because I like that they help show as much shoe as possible. If you want to be more daring, you can try and mix another color or two as I did here. This look is different than the first one because it's not too concern about making sure that everything matches. But at the same time, it knows that everything matches in a cooler way than the "safe" way. ;)What I mean by that is, yeah sure it's easy to match pink with pink, but it's when you have a "successful" green with pink, yellow wi...

fashion disaster - flowers in bloom
2008-03-20 20:27:00
To celebrate the first day of Spring... flowers!Millions of them!I call this "Visual Abuse".Honestly, it hurts my eyes to look at her! What's ironic is that even though she has flowers in at least 20 different colors on her blouse, none of them match the boots! And what's with the half on-half off jacket? And no, I didn't catch her while she was taking it off. She was walking around just like that... hmm... maybe the flowers needed to get some sunlight???....

Today I got this Ed Hardy hoody at a sample sale event.I think it's adorable!See, I like to dress all primp and proper, but I also love to wear cool casual clothes. And what's cooler than tattoos? ;)For those of you that don't know it, Don Ed Hardy is a real tattoo artist that, in collaboration with designer Christian Audigier, has taken his art from skin to fabric.I love the silky lining of the hood, such a nice detail. Now I need to go shopping for a cool pair of jeans, to wear with the new hoody.I could have bought Ed Hardy's jeans...but I think that would have been too much!...

hiro haraguchi hair salon
2008-03-17 14:53:00
Last week I had the privilege and pleasure of getting my haircut at Hiro Haraguchi Hair Salon.Let me preface that I usually get my haircut at a local hair salon that I have been going to for years. And I've never had a problem with trims and bangs services.Things changed (for the worse) when I started asking for layers.Last time I was there, this sweet lady that I've known for years just mangled my hair! As if Edward Scissorhands' spirit had descended upon her, she started cutting and cutting and cutting.I knew something wasn't right. I just wasn't sure how much damage she had caused.Needless to say, when I was presented with the opportunity to try out Hiro Haraguchi's Salon I was thrilled! From the beginning, everything went smoothly and even though I was la...

chanel vs l'oreal - foundation
2008-03-14 21:29:00
I have been using Chanel's foundation for quite a while now.I started out with the one that came in a tube and that cost $40.I wasn't too thrilled about the price but I figured that I was using a top-of-the-line product, something "too big to fail" (just like B&S...), so I was getting my money's worth.Every time I ran out of it, I always felt guilty going to the store and shelling out the $40. But I did it.Last time I went to the store the pretty boy behind the counter informed me that they didn't carry the tube but only the bottle."Hmm... How much is the bottle?"$52. A big smile from behind the counter pierced right through my wallet.Hmm... Ok... I'll take it.I had nothing left in the tube at home, so I had to buy...

bag in a bag
2008-03-13 14:24:00
The size of handbags has been steadily increasing in the past few years.I see so many women carrying bags so out of proportion with the rest of their bodies that makes me feel sorry for them. Here's a tip to save yourself from the burden of carrying your oversized bag with you all the time: put a small bag inside the big bag. With the "Bag in a Bag" you will still be able to carry half of your apartment around, but you would also be able to switch to a smaller bag as needed....

spring trend report?
2008-03-11 21:37:00
Some food for thought: when shopping for this Spring, or for any other upcoming season for that matter, don't worry too much about the "trends".Trends are there to guide you, if you need ideas, but always take into account where you are getting the "trends" information from.Online, for example, each store will always stir you towards the stuff it sells, of course.Take a look:This are Saks' TrendsThese are Neiman Marcus' Trends:These are Bloomingdale's Trends:These are H&M's Trends:These are Macy's Trends:What all these trends have in common?Very little (exactly my point...)Coming soon... NY Spender's Spring Trends (the real deal!). ;). ...

lamb shoes
2008-03-07 13:11:00
I was checking out Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. shoes, and while each pair is either a big hit or a big miss for me, I have to say that Gwen completely embraces her collection. If you look closely, in fact, you can find her behind every pair.....

island cowgirl jewelry
2008-03-06 12:07:00
Island Cowgirl is a jewelry line by Heather Kraty.Even if originally from the New York area, the sun, the beach and the waves were the things always close to Heather's heart. So much so, that she began selling her jewelry on the beach in the Caribbeans.I own a pair of Island Cowgirl earrings. And while I've gotten compliments on how pretty and original they are, those were never the only reasons why I first liked the earrings and the entire line. There was something different about it… but I couldn’t tell if it was the cute hearts imprinted on the metal, the rugged yet chic shapes or the leather/silver mixes.Only after reading Heather’s bio it all finally made sense to me: it was her free spirit and her love for the ...
