Barclays launches online banking security drive
2008-07-04 13:32:00
Barclays' two million UK online banking customers are to be offered free security software, the firm has announced.Anti-adware, spyware and viruses shields are to be given to the users for free, following concerns about online accounts being subject to fraud. It is thought that the cost of the bank's move could run to £200 million over two years. However, the importance of security to the online banking sector is thought to be enough to justify this expense: a survey from Abbey last month found that the time users spent on banks' websites exceeds that of MySpace and Facebook combined.Commenting, Sean Gilchrist at Barclays said: "For the last two years we have offered customers free ant

Online Banking User Demographics
2008-06-11 03:34:00
The February 2008 Pew Internet & American Life Project's "Online Shopping" report focused strictly on US adult Internet users, and found an even higher level of online banking participation: 53% of respondents said they banked online as of September 2007, equivalent to 39% of the total US adult population. Online banking is especially popular with higher-income adults in the US. Nearly seven out of 10 of people surveyed by Pew with annual incomes over $100,000 said they had tried online banking, compared with only 19% of those earning less than $25,000 a year. Unlike many other Web activities, younger users trail when it comes to banking online. Hitwise surveyed US Internet users who visited banking Web sites from December 2007 to January 2008 a

Online savings: Don't forget the small print
2008-05-20 15:49:00
Online banking has taken off in recent years and it's not just the young that are turning to the internet. In fact it has been the rise of the silver surfer - those over the age of 55 using the internet - that has fuelled the rise in internet banking largely in the form of online savings accounts. The baby boomer generation has more money and is more inclined to save it than younger generations and the initial fear many in this age bracket may have had with regard to internet security has long since subsided. Such has been the growth in this section of the population turning to online savings accounts that they account for the majority of many banks' online savers.According to the Association of Payment and Clearing Services (APACS), 55 per cent of internet users bank online - equating to a...

VeCommerce announces voice biometrics system for online banking
2008-04-18 10:27:00
eCommerce's voice biometrics authenticates an individual's identity through the unique properties of his or her voice. A voice profile can be used to authenticate both telephone and online transactions without any Pins or passwords.Brett Feldon, general manager at VeCommerce for the EMEA region, said: "Over a quarter of the UK population now regularly uses online banking but at the same time fraud continues to increase and criminals are becoming more sophisticated in their attacks."Card readers deployed by financial institutions to address the online fraud menace have certain drawbacks, as they are expensive both to produce and support with the continual loss of passwords and the actual readers. "They also do not work 'out

Online Banking: Is Security Up to You?
2008-04-08 19:19:00
Malware protection out of date? Then don't blame us if your online bank account gets hacked. That was the message sent out by the UK banking industry when the British Bankers' Association (BBA) updated its Banking Code and Business Banking Code last Monday, according to a Friday article on The Register. The Codes--essentially user agreements that all participating BBA banks use (you can read them here and here)--warn online banking customers that they might be responsible for their own losses if they "act without reasonable care," citing two sections as examples. One of those sections reads: "Keep your PC secure. Use up-to-date antivirus and spyware software and a personal firewall." It should be noted that the clause existed in the code in previous edit...

Ziniades says it is little wonder, then, that 40% of the respondents to the survey said they were willing to use self-service kiosks or other self-service devices to reduce time wasted while waiting for customer care. More than 40% chose one supplier over another because it offered self-service options.According to him, another survey released by Jupiter Research in 2006 found that 90% of US customers who contacted customer service over a six-month period used online self-service at least once.“Research conducted by World Wide Worx, on behalf of Consology, shows self-service is also on the rise locally, as customers demand a better level of service from their service providers, and as businesses try to contain climbing customer service costs while differentiating themselves from the comp

Small banks are finding a way to stay ahead with online banking.
2008-03-16 03:51:00
As the numbers of online users increase so do consumer requirements. In fact, according to CashEdge's second annual Consumer Online Banking Survey, which was released late last year, 85 percent of respondents would never bank with an institution that didn't offer online banking. Now, smaller community banks are finding that their online banking services are a way to keep customers."With all the new technology and our busier lifestyles as consumers, banks have to rely on technology to stay connected with their customers," said Chuck Carr, product line manager for Checkfree.com, a provider of financial electronic commerce services and products. While smaller community banks are unable to compete with large institutions in terms of geographic convenience, in

Internet banking less risky than driving a car
2008-03-12 03:45:00
A recent Nielsen survey showed that 46 per cent of people were concerned or very concerned about internet banking security. On the one hand, that is good. People should always have a close interest in how their money is being looked after. What worries me is that reporting of such figures without background or context feeds a misconception. The reality is that internet banking is incredibly safe.Westpac facilitates millions of online banking transactions a month. We have no recorded breaches of our internal security systems. It is not uncommon for us to have whole months where no customers fall victim to online fraud.

Internet Banking safe and speedy

Technology has altered our lives and habits significantly, enabling efficiencies and facilities like never before. We book air and train tickets on the Internet and have long stopped standing in queues and depending on booking agents. We browse through our telephone bills to skim call durations for any misuse. We buy and sell equity shares on our online trading accounts, in a matter of minutes, while being tuned to the market and prices from wherever we are.We search our mail history from email folders and snigger at someone who prints emails. We cannot remember the last time we sent a snail mail. However, when it comes to our money, are we using Internet Banking for all the efficiencies it enables?

Online Banking Grows, But Security Concerns Continue to Accrue
2008-03-02 16:59:00
This all doesn’t mean that online banking isn’t safe if done correctly — both by the institution and the customer. The writer points out that online banking is growing. Both the perception and the reality is that safety is improving and, for this reason, crackers are beginning to target smaller and less sophisticated institutions. Indeed, it’s possible to argue that online banking is safer than physical banking. The lion’s share of financial fraud is done in the real world and, even if online theft is attempted, alerts are sounded quicker and loss is less than off-line theft.

The Best Way to Set Up an Online Banking Account
2008-02-28 03:04:00
First, you'll need a username and password for your bank's online banking and bill pay center. If you don't have them already, follow the directions on your bank's Web site to set up your username and password. Then gather your regular bills, log in to your account and navigate to the online banking section, where you'll find a page that allows you to set up payees. If your bank allows you to receive electronic bills, or e-bills, you can search the bank's list of companies that offer such bills. If you receive bills from any of these companies, you can select the option to cancel future paper bills and have all bills sent electronically to your online banking account.

Business: Banking on the Internet
2008-02-14 03:30:00
The latest trends in finance are good news for trees everywhere.Employers are depositing wages directly into workers' bank accounts, doing away with printed checks. Those workers are receiving their bank statements at their home computers rather than in their mailboxes. Even the dollar itself is a piece of paper that's falling out of favor — consumers increasingly use debit and credit cards in lieu of cash.
