Why emerging-market growth isn't always good for investors
2008-05-11 08:09:53
FASTER economic growth means higher returns for investors. That is a big part of the rationale for investing in emerging markets. The problem with this argument is that it is not true. Research by the London Business School looked at 17 countries over 108 years. The countries with the slowest-growing economies (as measured by GDP growth over five-year periods) returned 8% a year; the markets in the fastest-growing economies, by contrast, returned just 5% a year. When a broader group of 53 economies, including many emerging markets, were examined, the tortoises beat the hares by a wider margin—12% to 6-7%. James Montier of Société Générale found that the slowest-growing emerging mark...

Great Financial Panic 2008
2008-05-11 01:58:46
What financial panic you might say? Hasn't the recent Fed actions, lead by Helicopter Ben Bernanke, poured enough taxpayer money, pardon me, that is printing press generated US dollars, into the hands of his Wall Street buddies, to ware off any potential panic?Nope, afraid not. While the government line may be coordinated with the talking heads on MBNC and elsewhere, as to that a crisis and panic has been adverted and that we no longer need to worry, I fear that the truth is that the financial meltdown has barely gotten started as the problems of over leveraging and the necessary deleveraging are still very much with us.While the troubles with the subprime mortgage lending market has received most of the press on the debt deleveraging issue, and the act...

According to the Investment Company Institute, a national association representing U.S. investment companies, U.S. ETFs had combined assets of $572 billion in November 2007 and while that was down a bit from October, it's a huge jump from 12 months earlier (see "Growth market," right). While well-established ETFs, su...

The US Financial Crisis Has Not Had A Bad Effect On Everyone
2008-05-11 01:46:12
Corporate America feels the change as consumers alter their buying habits since the economic slowdown caused by the mortgage crisis and resulting credit crunch last year has not been such bad news for everyone, reflecting both behavioural shifts among US consumers and the advantages enjoyed by those companies that are less dependent on the US domestic market than most of their competitors.Wal-Mart, the largest retailer in the US, has a mass discount business that is focused on low-income consumers, who have been the hardest hit by rising energy prices and tightening credit. It's shares have risen by 23% since last October, when the credit crunch started picking up pace, to hit their highest level for 4 years. And this is typical for these kind of companies ...

History and development of the currency exchange market
2008-05-11 01:31:13
Currency trading has a long history and can be traced back to the ancient Middle East and Middle Ages when foreign exchange started to take shape after the international merchant bankers devised bills of exchange, which were transferable third-party payments that allowed flexibility and growth in foreign exchange dealings. The modern foreign exchange market characterized by periods of high volatility (that is a frequency and an amplitude of a price alteration) and relative stability formed itself in the twentieth century. By the mid-1930s the British capital London became to be the leading center for foreign exchange and the British pound served as the currency to trade and to keep as a reserve currency. Because in the old times foreign exchange was traded on the telex machines, or cable, t...

When was Wall Street defined ?
2008-05-11 01:02:01
Wall Street is a street, an address in New York City pointing straight from Roosevelt Drive near the East River to the old Trinity Church. But this is not the Wall Street people refer to when they ask, "What does Wall Street work?" or "What does Wall Street say?" That Wall Street is a marketplace.Specifically, it is a marketplace where the merchants, agents, and customers of finance meet to buy and sell stocks and bonds. It is composed of all the individual marketplaces and the total community of interests that maintains them and is regulated closely by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), created by the Securities and Exchange Act of 1934.Thus, the name Wall Street is a short, convenient reference to the exchanges where stocks are traded in a two-way auction process:the New York ...

Shooting stocks - growth stocks Part III
2008-05-10 07:53:51
* Debt to capital: The lower a company's debt, the less strapped it is by payments to creditors. The pros say look for a clean balance sheet, or companies with a debt-to-capital ratio of 40% or less.We learn early on that a string of credit card payments is likely to prevent anyone from saving much or even acquiring the finer things in life. The same goes for big corporations. A growth company that has the banks looking over its shoulder will have less money to put into research, new factories or even share buybacks. Many investment pros will tell you that 40% is a good cutoff point. Above that, and a company is likely to be gasping for air. Below, and things are manageable.Growth investing, like value, requires a good amount of research beyond the setting...

2008-05-09 20:05:33
FINDING THE EDGEFor growth managers, coping with an inflated market means one thing: finding an "edge," or a way to spot good prospects before hordes of investors bid up their share prices. Securing a head start on the market for growth pickers boils down to finding growth candidates early. Instead of searching for shares that are underappreciated and underpriced, which is the strategy value players pursue, growth managers are more interested in finding companies where earnings growth is about to take off or "accelerate." Then, by getting in before the growth spurt, professionals like C. Kim Goodwin, portfolio manager with Kansas City, Missouri-based American Century Investment Management, are able to buy in at a reasonable price.Goodwin says a recent exam...

A booming economy kept corporate earnings, the bounty growth managers cherish, surging as high as 20% annually. Low inflation helped keep money flowing into the stock market. And newspaper headlines seemed to spotlight massive mergers and acquisitions daily. Add it all up and you have a paradise for growth investors. For proof, look at the Standard & Poor's Barra...

Discover the Greatest Secret of Foreclosure - Overage
2008-05-04 09:59:41
Possibly one of the best kept secrets in the foreclosure industry is "overage". This money can be as little as a few dollars or as much as millions of dollars.Depending on which state the homeowner lives in, his foreclosure sale will be conducted by a sheriff, a trustee, or a county clerk of the court. As prescribed by law, the person in charge of the auction will sell the property to the public with "open outcry bidding" until the property is sold or redeemed by the lender. The location is usually on the courthouse steps or similar convenient place that is readily accessible to the public.Normally the first bid on a propert...

2008-05-04 09:15:22
The correlation between Prices">oil prices and EUR/$ has spiked to an all-time high over the last six months.Hence, lower oil prices have been associated with Dollar appreciation.Historically, the link between oil prices and the Dollar has been weak ,with average correlation between WTI and EUR/$ less than 10% over the last ten years. But the recent link is statistically quite strong. For example, oil prices are highly significant in a simple regression model for EUR/$, which also includes chances in (nominal)interest rates. For this reason, it is worth thinking about the relationship again, especially given that there are some fundamental reasons why there should be a link. Why the Dollar may b...

The dance of debt
2008-04-26 22:42:04
The tendency for financial services to run right over the cliff is accentuated by financial assets' habit of growing during booms. By lodging their extra assets as collateral, the intermediaries can put them to work and borrow more. Tobias Adrian, of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and Hyun Song Shin, of Princeton University, have shown that since the 1970s, debts have grown faster than assets during booms. This pro-cyclical leverage can feed on itself. If financial groups use the borrowed money to buy more of the sorts of securities they lodged as collateral, then the prices of those securities will go up. That, in turn, enables them to raise more debt and buy more securities. Indeed, their shareholders would punish them if they sat out the next round...

When finance is wrong - Part II
2008-04-26 05:11:28
The seeds of today's disaster were sown in the 1980s, when financial services began a pattern of growth that may only now have come to an end. In a recent study Martin Barnes of BCA Research, a Canadian economic-research firm, traces the rise of the American financial-services industry's share of total corporate profits, from 10% in the early 1980s to 40% at its peak last year (see chart 1). Its share of stockmarket value grew from 6% to 19%. These proportions look all the more striking—even unsustainable—when you note that financial services account for only 15% of corporate America's gross value added and a mere 5% of private-sector jobs.At first this growth was built on the solid foundations of rising asset prices.
