Interview with Green Flash head brewer Chuck Silva
2008-05-08 15:13:00
By Angelo De Ieso IIOn a recent trip to Southern California, I had the great privilege to sample some great beers in the San Diego area--Port/Lost Abbey, Stone, AleSmith, Ballast Point, and Coronado to name a few. Green Flash Brewing in Vista, California was one of the best, producing some palate-jolting brands that have been garnering acclaim all over the world of late. The company's West Coast IPA has become an industry standard and has placed the San Diego style IPA on the map. Winning several awards while finding new and exciting uses for the precious hop, Green Flash head brewer Chuck Silva showed me around the brewery and let me taste some amazing beers. He also was so kind as to shed some light on himself, the br...

New Arrivals For Friday May 2, 2008
2008-05-02 17:00:00
Mmm...Beer. The weather looks promising, and the coolers are full. We've got plenty of lighter summer offerings in stock, and if you feel like bucking the weather trend we've got a couple heavy-hitting dark beers for you to consider as well. Here's the newest offerings, roughly order from lightest to darkest.NEW BEER!Boulder - Sweaty Betty: Boulder's summer seasonal is often overlooked, but if you're a fan of Widmer (or Pyamid) Hefeweizen it's definitely worth a try. Light citrusy hop notes rise up and accentuate the hazy, smooth beer.Cascade Lakes Pine Marten Pale: The Pine Marten isn't seasonal, but after changing distributors a few months ago we've finally got it back in PDX. It's chock full of piney hops riding a wave of bready, slightly toasty malt. Imagine walking the hills ...

New Arrivals and Event Notices
2008-04-25 17:32:00
It's always a pleasant surprise when something arrives when we're told to expect it, so I was pretty darn pleased when the Laurelwood Green Elephant and Bridgeport's Stumptown Tart both rolled off the trucks this morning. Throw in a couple of new lagers and you've got a nice list of stuff to drink this weekend.New Beers!Laurelwood - Green Elephant: Mmmm....Green Elephant. Big, crisp, and chock full of citrusy, floral goodness. This is my second favorite IPA from the 'Wood, right behind the delicious Workhorse. As I mentioned yesterday, they only bottled a couple hundred cases, so snag some while you can.Bridgeport - Stumptown Tart: Much has already been written about the Tart, so I'll let Angelo, Jeff, and John wax poetic about the brew. All I'd like to add is that I'm amazed how i...

New Arrivals For Tuesday April 22, 2008
2008-04-22 18:55:00
This is perhaps the slowest time of year for new beers. Other than a trickle of summer seasonals from the bigger craft brewers, there's not much of interest being released. In the meantime I've been exploring the wonderful world of sake. Look for our selection (now hovering around 25 hand-selected varieties) to expand as we continue our never-ending quest to bring you the finest libations we can.New Beers:Malheur Brut Reserve - This strong golden ale undergoes "methode champenoise" to produce a high level of carbonation and a dense head of tiny bubbles. Aromas of citrus fruit, light floral notes, and nutty malt lead into a cleanly malty, effervescent body before coalescing in a long, dry finish. Lagunitas Lucky 13 - Brewed to celebrate their 13th anniversary, the Lucky 13 is is hoppy...

Vasili's Tasting Notes For Wednesday's Tasting
2008-04-21 18:35:00
Vasili was kind enough to provide some insight into the beers we'll be pouring on Wednesday, April 24th. The following was slightly edited for readability, but otherwise everything is straight from the horse's mouth.Redrum (7.2%abv, 25IBUs): This beer debuted at Portland’s Cheers To Belgian Beers 2008. Made with wort from the Jeremiah Red and fermented using the famed “La Chouffe” yeast strain. Nice and spicy with dark fruity flavors.Grand Cru 2008 (10%abv): A spiced tripel, modeled after our champion Belgian strong ale from 2002. This batch fermented faster than any beer I’ve ever brewed, but without the “higher alcohols” known for causing headaches.Enfant Terrible (~7.8%abv): This brew began life as the unblended base beer from our 2007 OBF entry which was racked into cle...

FredFest 2008
2008-04-17 12:43:00
The formal press release went out last night, so I don't have to keep quiet any longer. If you were in attendance last year you know this is Portland's best little beer fest. If you weren't there last year this is your chance to sample some incredible beers in the company of 200 of the biggest beer geeks and industry folk in Portland. Tickets are extremely limited, and if the beer list shapes up like last years' (Full Sail Black Gold, cask-conditioned HOTD Fred, Raccoon Lodge Sour Raspberry...) it'll assuredly sell out before the day of the event. Here's the official word:FredFest 2008 Honors Memory of Michael Jackson PORTLAND, Ore. — What started as a surprise 80th birthday party for world-renowned beer writer Fred Eckhardt is coming back around in its third year as a fundraise...

New Belgium Set To Unveil Fat Tire Cans
2008-04-15 16:19:00
From 9news.com:DENVER (AP) - This summer, Colorado's New Belgium Brewing Co. plans to offer its flagship Fat Tire Amber Ale from something other than the tap or a glass bottle: an aluminum can.It looks like outdoor enthusiasts will soon have one more option for tasty "river beer" in the not-to-distant future. There's no word as to when they'll be available, but my source told me it's unlikely that we'll see them in Oregon until later this year. One other interesting tidbit from the article caught my eye:The Fat Tire that comes in cans will be "can-conditioned" with live yeast, so its flavor should not be affected, he said. Despite popular perceptions about canned beer, the company's taste tests show the canned version tastes the same as the bottled brew.W...

BridgePort Brewing Company to Release Its Inaugural Fruit Ale
2008-04-14 16:50:00
By Angelo De Ieso IIOn April 24, 2008, Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, BridgePort will release the Stumptown Tart—a Belgian ale aged in pinot noir barrels and blended with a healthy amount of fresh Oregon marion berries. BridgePort brewmaster Karl Ockert says of the Tart “I’ve never done a beer like this. Period.” The base beer for the Tart was a Belgian golden ale that finished at about 8% ABV. “We split off about a third of that and we went to Carlton Wine Studio and picked up 23 French oak casks. On April 3rd, with the other two-thirds Ockert and company employed 2,000 pounds of Oregon marion berries and refermented with the fruit. They then blended the two with yeast and sugar for bottle fermentation. Th...

Sam Adams Recall
2008-04-07 18:15:00
From the Boston Herald:The Boston Beer Co. issued the recall following what it called routine quality-control inspections that revealed defects in some bottles used at its Cincinnati brewery. The bottles, manufactured by an unnamed third-party supplier, “might cause small bits of glass to break off and possibly fall into the bottle.” The Boston-based company said it so far has not received any reports of consumer injuries related to the bottles, which are embossed with the letter “N,” followed by the number “35” and the letters “OI”.This is a rough situation for any company, but I'm glad to see them taking proactive measures to correct it. This is breaking news that hadn't even reached the distributor yet, but when I find out more I'll be sure to post it. In the meantime ...

New Arrivals For Friday April 4, 2007
2008-04-04 16:17:00
Someone pointed out that I hadn't posted anything since last month, but unfortunately I haven't been feeling the writing groove lately (and thus, no ranting and raving), and to be honest there hasn't been much in the way of new arrivals. That all changed today when we got several new beers, including 5 from from Snoqualmie Falls Brewing in Washington that have never been distributed in Oregon before.New Imports:Gouden Carolus - Triple: We've had this on tap a couple of times in the BierCafe, and it's always been well received, so I was pretty thrilled when they finally decided to bring in the bottles. Clear golden color, and topped with a billowy white head, this brew is almost as pleasant to look at as it is to drink. Fruity yeast character, light bready malts, and a long spicy finish...

New Arrivals and A Call To Action
2008-03-21 18:34:00
Only a couple new arrivals today, so I'm going to fill some space with a little local blog round-up. First, the beers:Stone - Imperial Russian Stout: It's big, it's bad, and it'll rock your world view. It's way better than Glasnost. Seriously, out of the 50,000+ beers in the ratebeer.com database, this is one of the relative handful to receive a perfect 100 overall. I can't really say any more than that. If you consider yourself a lover of dark beer don't let this one pass you by.Full Sail - Nut Brown Ale: The latest release in the Brewmaster's Reserve Series is a hearty nut brown. It's got plenty of good nutty, roasty flavors (and it's fairly hoppy for a nut brown) but it plays well on the tongue thanks to a light body and effervescent carbonation.Fish Tale - Organic Blonde: Ligh...

Live From The BierCafe
2008-03-17 18:02:00
The picture really doesn't do justice to the scene next door; it's standing room only at the moment, and the line stretches back into the store. If I had to guess, I'd say there's a very good chance that both of these kegs will die tonight, especially after I get off work and belly up to the bar (assuming there's a place to sit)....

The Products of Byproduct
2008-03-15 14:28:00
...And we're speaking about beer and cheese. In the past days, the singular and hedonistic pairing of these two staples has announced itself in my life time and again; I imagine I'm stating the apparent to many of you, however, the readiness and propensity for such pleasure and complexity from such an unpretentious pairing has gripped me and simply will not loosen. Pity for you...Unexpectedly, Tuscany and California met in my mouth just a few days ago. I hadn't planned the match. In fact, far from being a culinary architect, I felt afterwards as though whatever muses sang to cheesemongers and beer stewards had let loose an odd note which, by some circumstance, rang to a pitch discernible by one idiot savant, namely myself! Specifically, after the suggestion of a salesperson at Pastaworks...

2008-03-11 16:35:00

Coming Soon: Ninkasi Bottles!
2008-02-26 17:48:00
I just received confirmation from our sales guy that Ninkasi bottles will be available for delivery on Tuesday. The starting lineup will be their Total Domination IPA, Believer Red Ale, and Tricerahops Double IPA. We've been getting requests for these beer ssince shorty after they opened, and it'll be nice to offer them in something other than a 15.5 gallon keg.In other Ninkasi news, we're hosting Jamie Floyd (and maybe his partner Nikos Ridge) for a bottle release and "Meet the Brewer" event in our BierCafe on Monday, March 10, from 6 - 9 pm. We usually offer some sort of sale on bottles featured in the tastings, so if you haven't sampled them yet I'd encourage you to stop by, ask Jamie some questions, sample the beers, and then take some home for la...

Oregon Trail Bourbon Porter
2008-02-25 17:52:00
The Oregon Trail Bourbon Porter was just delivered. I'll try one tonight and post an update tomorrow, but in the meantime you can check out the reviews for previous batches on ratebeer.com.I tried to post an image, but Blogger is acting weird. Oh well......

How Much?
2008-02-22 23:31:00
Alright loyal readers, here's a great chance to make your opinion known. Based on our web traffic I know that there's only 1-2 comments per 100 readers, but I'm hoping that some of the lurkers will give me some feedback on this one. We've been given a chance to pre-order some cases of the Ola Dubh series from Harviestoun brewery in England. Essentially, it's an 8% imperial porter aged in Highland Park casks. For the first run, they've aged the beer in 12yr, 16yr, and 30yr Highlannd Park Single Malt barrels. If the project is well received they'll continue the series with 40 year and 60 year barrels. My question to you is this: How much should we get? Outside the reviews, the only information I have is that the bottles are 11.2oz and will apparently cost $10-11 for the 12yr, $11-12 for...

Pearl Specialty
2008-02-22 18:37:00
You may have heard the news a few months ago regarding a liquor store in the Pearl District. Without going into to too much detail, the owners of Specialty Pearl managed to convince the OLCC that due to the high cost of rent in the neighborhood they should be granted a variance to allow them to sell beer and wine in addition to hard liquor. Their logic was that a "stand alone" liquor store wouldn't be profitable, and the OLCC concurred. The permits were approved, the place is open, and as far as I know it's now the first (and only) place in Oregon where you can pick up liquor, beer, and wine in the same location.Need some incentive to check the place out? Here's a few stats:300+ varieties of Wine150+ varieties of Vodka100+ Single Malts (no more driving ...

Oak-Aged Stella Artois?!?
2008-02-22 13:26:00
Um, What?“It will drive the frequency of purchase by ensuring more occasions can be met by premium lager and will also drive shopper interest and penetration by encouraging more consumers from other categories to buy into it," he said.Ugh. That's some of the best (and worst) marketing-speak I've read in a long time. It doesn't entice me to purchase any, but I'm curious as to which "occasions" can be met by premium lager...I suppose I should withhold judgment until I actually have a chance to try some, but I take this as a sign that the whole "oak aging" thing has gone way too far....

The Best Local Site You've Never Heard Of
2008-02-21 15:52:00
I'm pretty sure I've mentioned Portlandbeer.org before, and it's been listed in the blog roll for months, but since they just finished overhauling the site I thought I'd take a moment and point out this great resource. It starts off properly, with a clean layout and easy navigation. A well thought out design helps to make sense of what could otherwise be information overload, and off to the right is a continually updated list of daily beer specials:Thursday's Beer SpecialsUpcoming Specials:Start:End:Alameda Brewing Company3:00pm6:00pmHHLaurelwood Brewery3:00pm6:00pmHHRaccoon Lodge3:00pm6:00pmHHRock Bottom Brewery3:00pm6:00pmHHLaurelwood Brewery9:00pm12:00pmHHRaccoon Lodge9:00pm12:00pmHHRaccoon Lodge9:00pm12:00pmHHPretty handy reference, especially given the rising cost of pints. 2008-02-21 13:40:00
This just in from Lisa Morrison (via the Oregon Brew Crew listserv):Wet Dog Cafe/Astoria Brewing Co. is looking for a new head brewer. Or they would also entertain having someone fill in as a contract brewer until they find the right person. Contact Steve Allen, owner, at steve@allenpcas.com for more information.Once again, please remember your friendly, local blogger if you get the job :)...

Anderson Valley Double IPA
2008-02-15 12:31:00
In honor of their 20th anniversary, Anderson Valley is releasing 22oz bottles of Imperial IPA. Weighing in at 8.7% ABV, and chock full of hoppy goodness, it's a great tribute to one of northern California's best breweries. The beer should be in stock by the time you read this, but my sales rep was kind enough to drop off a sample bottle yesterday, so for once I can tell you all about it before it's even here. I should have taken a picture or two, but in lieu of any visual evidence you'll just have to use your imagination. The beer pours a beautiful burnished copper supporting a creamy white head. The aroma practically jumped out of the glass and smacked me in the face with spicy, piney hops notes and a little alcoholic heat. There's definitely some swe...

The End Is Important In All Things
2008-02-14 13:21:00
Last night I went to the Laurelhurst theater to see Ghost Dog: The Way of The Samurai with a friend. I've probably seen it a dozen times, but the final scene seems to lodge in my brain and affect my actions for a few days after every viewing. I won't go into the details and spoil it for those who haven't seen the movie (it's amazing), but it centers on a modern day samurai, brilliantly portrayed by Forest Whittaker. At several points during the movie he's shown reading from the Japanese tome Hagakure: The Way of the Samurai. The following quote is the final excerpt from the book to be shown in the movie:"In the Kamigata area, they have a sort of tiered lunchbox they use for a single day when flower viewing. Upon returning, they throw them away, trampling them underfoot. The end is impo...

New Arrivals For Tuesday, 2.12.08
2008-02-12 17:35:00
It's been a while since we've gotten enough new beers to justify writing one of these, and this is a great collection that runs the gamut from delicate and spicy to huge and bracing. Without further ado...New Beers From America:Rogue - Imperial Red: - The latest beer in Rogue's XS Series (in the ceramic bottles) is an imperial red ale. Rogue was kind enough to put me on the guest list for their release party last Thursday, but unfortunately I was feeling under the weather and couldn't make it, so now I'll have to buy a bottle. Knowing Rogue, I'd expect a big caramelly malt backbone supporting a huge hop charge. Stay tuned to more...Brideport - Barrel-Aged Old Knucklehead: For the twelfth bottling of the venerated Old Knucklehead, Bridgeport decided to take it up a notch and age it fo...

A Small Part Of Me Just Died
2008-01-30 14:01:00
I was just scanning the headlines at Real Simple Beer Syndication, aka RSBS, when a headline jumped off the page and smacked me: This Is The End of OlfabrikkenYou can read Jens' post for more details, but in short, Olfabrikken was purchased by Gourmetbryggeriet, a Danish craft brewery located in Roskilde, Denmark. It's tough to read their site, even with the help of a Danish > English translator, but they seem to have a focus on quality; hiring a former brew master from Carlsberg, serving great looking food in their restaurant, and putting out a handful of their own tasty beers. That gives me a small ray of hope that the Olfabrikken Porter I've come to love will continue to stand up to it's reputation, but I think I'll be stocking up soon, just to be safe.Maybe Jen and I are freaking out...

Shhh...Keep This On The Down Low...
2008-01-30 12:42:00
Rumors have been swirling for a few days now about a second wave of Abyss arriving in Portland this week, and I can confirm that there are a couple hundred more cases dropping tomorrow and Friday. As far as I know, every place that received some of the first wave should get another small allotment, and a few places that got screwed the first time will be getting a some as well.We won't be getting anywhere near the amount we received on the first batch, so in order to spread the joy a bit we're going to limit people to 3 bottles per person (per day) for at least the first week.As if that wasn't enough to motivate you to stop in on Friday, we should also be receiving Full Sail Bourbon-aged Top Sail, Stone Old Guardian Barleywine, and maybe (it's a slim chance) some Oregon Trail Bourbon Port...

Lucky Lab Barleywine and Big Beer Fest
2008-01-25 16:20:00
The Lucky Lab's annual big beer and barleywine festival seems to be coming together nicely. Dave Fleming just confirmed (via the Oregon Brewcrew listserv) that this years' event will be held Friday and Saturday, March 7th and 8th, at the Beer Hall on NW Quimby, and the beer starts flowing at noon each day.The entire list hasn't been publicized yet, but here's the list of things that have been confirmed thus far: Hair of the Dog - Adam 2007 Bend Brewing - Outback X 2006 Terminal Gravity - Barleywine 2005 Great Divide - Old Ruffian Barleywine Caldera Brewing - Imperial Stout 2004 and 2005 Stone Brewing - Old Guardian 2005More to come... ...

Full Sail Top Sail Arriving 02.01.08
2008-01-24 14:49:00
As incredible as the Bourbon-aged Top Sail is, I'm surprised it hasn't generated any of the buzz that the Abyss garnered. The bourbon and vanilla character are perfectly layered with the roasty, coffee and cocoa malt flavors to create a wonderfully flavorful brew.I don't expect it to sell as quickly as the Abyss, but they made considerably less Top Sail, so I wouldn't recommend waiting very long to seek it out.John Harris will be joining us on Friday, February 8th to tap one of the only kegs available. I'm sure he'd be happy to answer questions about barrel aging, brewing big beers, or what it's like to be one of the rock stars of our local brewing scene. We're still working out some details, but we expect to tap the keg at 5pm. Stay tuned for more detai...

Workshop: Craft Beer Appreciation for Women @ Fort George
2008-01-22 11:34:00
From the desk of the fine folks at Fort George Brewery in Astoria, Oregon:Announcing an upcoming workshop: Craft Beer Appreciation for Women, with Lisa Morrison, Saturday February 9th from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Fort George Brewery & Public House in Astoria. Here’s an exciting opportunity to get ahead of the curve on the booming craft beer industry—a fascinating workshop by a woman for women. Beer is no longer reserved for the stereotypical man on the couch watching football. Rather, it’s a dynamic part of our culture, bursting with complexity, much like fine wine.Increase your knowledge and confidence in purchasing, and consuming craft beers. You...

Finally...The Wait Is Over
2008-01-18 13:00:00
Alright ravenous beer lovers of Portland, the Deschutes Abyss is finally here. I can't even tell you how many calls and emails I've received in the last two weeks, but I know the demand is going to be ridiculous, so if you haven't already scooped some up elsewhere I'd suggest stopping by ASAP.I would be very, very surprised if our allotment lasts through the weekend, so don't say I didn't warn you. As previously mentioned, there is a one case limit in effect in order to spread the beer out to as many people as possible. Due to the incredible response, we're unable to take any reservations or holds; first come, first served. Now that that's out of the way, we can begin speculating and hyping their newest project, the Dissident, which they're describing as a sour red ale "in the Rodenbach ...

A Quick Teaser...
2008-01-16 19:46:00
WOW! John Harris was kind enough to drop by with the first bottle of Bourbon-Aged Top Sail Imperial Porter, and I'm blown away. Bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, and oak collide in one amazing package.February 1st is the official release date for this years' Bourbon-aged Top Sail Porter. We're still working out the details, but if everything goes as planned we'll be having a release party in the Biercafe on Friday February the 1st to kick things off. Stay tuned for more details on that as they become available. In other news, John mentioned a special tasting that he's working on for the Harborside Pilsner Room. At this point the details are tentative, but it's being lined up for Friday February 7, 2008. The tasting will feature 2004 Bourbon-Aged Top Sail Imperial Porter, 2006 Bourbon-aged ...

Deschutes Abyss Update
2008-01-14 17:56:00
Greetings Beer lovers,Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Abyss will most likely not arrive until Friday morning. Apparently it won't be arriving at the distributor's warehouse until tomorrow, so the earliest that anyone in town will receive it will be Wednesday. If by some stroke of luck we manage to get our allotment before Friday I'll post again, hopefully with pricing info and tasting notes, but at the very least I wanted to get this info out ASAP to reduce the number of people who come in and get frustrated because we don't have it.Your patience will be rewarded......
