The New 1,000 Calorie Sauna
2007-04-02 16:29:21
The Smarthouse Technology Guide features an infrared sauna that burns more then 1,000 Calories in about 30 minutes. This sounds very interesting. The sauna technology is from a small company called Health Mate. It claims its sauna’s can burn up to 1000 calories in 30 minutes and provide great health benefits for the skin, due to increased blood flow, and also relief from arthritis,  strains and sprains. A brief perusal of the Health Mate site shows this interesting health claim: As you get relax in the nice heat of the Health Mate sauna, your body is  working hard, producing sweat, pumping blood - and of course burning calories. According to a Journal of the American Medical Association report, in a single sauna session you may burn as many calories as you would rowing or jogging for 30 minutes. So you actually lose weight - not just water. Lose weight - not just water? That leaves muscle, bone, fat, and organ tissues. I’m not sure how an infra-red sauna is capable of doi...

How About A Million Pound Low-Carb March?
2007-04-02 00:47:00
With the success of my blog has come a flood of e-mails from all kinds of people passing on blog post ideas that they think would interest me. I have to be honest with you and let you know that most of these go right into File 13. Sure, I’ll hang on to them for a while and consider whether they need to become a blog post or not. But most of the time, they become trash. However, I have to admit one of my readers who wishes to remain anonymous had the most creative idea regarding livin’ la vida low-carb that I’ve seen in a very long time and I felt it was more than worthy of your attention. By that person’s permission, I present to you a brief of the concept he describes as the “Million Pound March.” I have added “low-carb” to that idea so that people will understand what we are marching about. Here’s the brief for the “Million Pound Low-Carb March”: SummaryThe concept of the “Million Pound Low-Carb March” popped ...

Record-Breaking 126,000 Hits For Diet Blog
2007-04-01 20:53:00
I know it seems like I say this every month, but I had my all-time highest amount of blog traffic in March 2007. Following the more than 116,000 pageviews in January 2007, this past month at the “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” blog was even better–126,002!!! Why did this spike in traffic which actually pushed me past the 1 million total pageviews mark a few weeks ago happen? I have a couple of theories. First, there was the release of this Stanford study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that found the Atkins diet was best among four popular diets. Naturally, people became curious about livin’ la vida low-carb again and guess where their Google searches sent them? Yep, right here and at the various other web sites I write for, including CarbWire, CommonVoice, and LowCarbNewsline. In fact, I had a record-breaking 7,947 pageviews on March 8, 2007 and around 35,000 pageviews that week alone which helped push my stats to all-time highs...

Thanks For Changing My Life, Ralph Bristol
2007-04-01 17:07:00
Radio talk show host Ralph Bristol instrumental in my low-carb success While most of the readers of my “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” blog are aware of my 180-pound weight loss on the Atkins diet in 2004, you may not realize there were other ingredients involved in that experience that helped push me to the great success that I was able to accomplish. One of those was a rather unique opportunity to be a part of a weight loss contest conducted by a local afternoon radio talk show host named Ralph Bristol. I had been a regular listener of “The Ralph Bristol Show” on 1330/950AM Newsradio WORD in Greenville/Spartanburg, SC for several years before 2004 when Ralph announced a brand new contest he was calling “Ralph’s Incredible Shrinking Ton” which would pit five contestants weighing a cumulative 2,000 pounds against each other to see who could lose the most weight as a percentage of their starting weight. You can read my CommonVoice.com column e...

Supplementing And How To Do It
2007-04-01 05:20:18
The common misconception that people have is supplements are replacements for items missing in their diet.  Unfortunately that could not be further from the truth.  Supplements do exactly as defined they supplement (or make up) what is missing in your diet, not due to poor dieting but maybe improper planning. Evaluating your diet you must really evaluate what you are eating and if you are eating enough of these foods.  For you low carb dieters out there you may as well forget this article as it does not pertain to anything you are trying.  I for one do not have the time or schedule to eat green vegetables every day so I found a magnificent product through the guidance of one of our future contributors.  This product is called greens plus a dietary supplement which makes up for the greens your diet misses.  I have noticed how much better I feel, my digestive system to my energy levels.  Before I reevaluated my diet at the beginning of the year I knew I was missing key vitamins an...

Olive Garden’s ‘No Sugar Added’ Dessert Sham
2007-03-31 23:24:00
Olive Garden ain’t exactly a place for “low-carb friendly” meals If my wife Christine had unlimited resources and was able to buy anything she wanted in the whole world, then there’s no doubt in my mind that she would buy her very own Olive Garden restaurant to fill her need for their famous soup, salad, and breadsticks. The woman would literally live off of this meal every single day if she could, although she does admit she’d probably balloon up in weight just as quickly as we’d go bankrupt paying for it! Unfortunately for her, though, the closest Olive Garden to our house has been much too far away for us to visit. So imagine my surprise a few months ago when some new construction started across the street from the Super Wal-Mart along a main road in Spartanburg, South Carolina and we noticed the sign indicated they were building an Olive Garden restaurant. I think Christine did cart wheels inside the car that day! When the restaurant opened fo...

My Pictures From The Set Of ‘Leatherheads’
2007-03-31 20:52:00
A shot of football actors during filming of the movie “Leatherheads” Ever since I thought I might have a chance at being in “Leatherheads,” the upcoming 1920’s period film which is actually a romantic comedy about the birth of professional football directed by and starring the one and only Hollywood superstar George Clooney (do you see him in that picture above–probably not since it’s so small, but he’s the one wearing #7 on the left-hand side), I’ve kinda felt like good things were about to happen for me. Then when I got the fateful call late last month that the casting director wanted to use me as an extra in what is sure to be a blockbuster flick when it comes out in early 2008, I was totally surprised but overjoyed at the opportunity. There’s Jimmy Moore in his doorman costume in “Leatherheads” A few weeks ago, I experienced my first time ever on the set of the “Leatherheads” movie during the tapin...

2007-03-31 19:58:23
A normal day at work: You hurry off with nothing in your stomach. By morning you’re onto your second coffee.  Since its break time, you go off to by a muffin and some latte. Lunchtime comes and you get anything that’s fast and cheap. By mid afternoon your are tired and not in a very good mood, so you decide to grab a bite or snack with a coke. This is the busy lifestyle Americans live everyday. Also, this is just one out of hundreds of reasons why the U.S is the country with most overweight people. Here are 3 easy ways to improve your work diet. Don’t Skip Breakfast If you are not hungry when you wake up or don’t have enough time - why not prepare some breakfast at work? I’ve known many a colleague who will make themselves some breakfast in the staff room. Most offices will have at least a fridge and a small microwave oven. If your office doesn’t have this, then suggest to your boss that you would like some kind of a staff from for your meals. Maybe...
