Antibiotics on the verge of becoming completely useless
2012-05-22 09:29:09
The journal Lancet
Infectious Diseases recently published a sobering piece about how antibiotics
are becoming wholly ineffective as treatments for infection. According to the
report, even the most powerful antibiotics available are largely inadequate at
tackling the emerging forms of new and powerful "super" bacteria.
Antibiotic overuse has become a pandemic problem. They are used in animal feed
to make animals grow more quickly and they are handed out like candy by many
doctors to people with almost any ailment. And they are simply not working
anymore to fight infection.
Published by Professor Tim Walsh and his colleagues, the paper explains how a
new gene called NDM 1 is changing the way infectious bacteria survive. The NDM
1 gene passes among bacteria like E. Coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae and makes
them resistant to antibiotics. Even carbapenems, the most powerful antibiotics
available, are no match for these new bacteria. Read more…

Revealed: which fruit and vegetable juices alleviate arthritis pain without drugs or surgery
2012-05-15 21:44:31
by: Ben Kage
As the song says, "You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone" --
and motor skills are no exception. Despite the ranking of the opposable thumb
as one of the single most important evolutionary advantages of the human race,
many people take the use of their hands for granted until something draws their
attention to it, such as arthritis. Joseph B. Marion, author of "The
Anti-Aging Manual", says that an estimated 41 million Americans suffer
from arthritis.
Arthritis is actually a term covering over 100 rheumatic diseases; but
basically, the affliction can be defined as an inflammation of the joints.
According to http://www.rlrouse.com,
the two most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis (http://www.dreddyclinic.com/findinformation/aa/osteoarthritis.php),
which generally is caused by every day wear and tear on the foot or poor
choices of shoe design, and rheumatoid arthritis (http://www.dreddyclinic.com/findinformation/aa/rheumatoidarthritis.php),

Cold Weather May Raise Blood Pressure in Elderly
2012-05-11 10:01:42
(HealthDay News) --
When the temperature drops outside, blood pressure appears to rise in older
adults, a new study shows.
The systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) blood pressures both
rose and fell with the change of seasons in the 8,801 people, aged 65 or older,
looked at in the study by the Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche
Medicale of Paris. The average systolic blood pressure, for example, was five
points higher in winter than in summer for the participants. Instances of high
blood pressure (systolic blood pressure higher than 159, or diastolic higher
than 94 millimeters of mercury or higher) were found in 33.4 percent of
participants during winter but just 23.8 percent during summer. Read more…

The anti-cancer medicine in broccoli (DIM nutrients)
2012-05-02 09:06:43
The anti-cancer medicine in broccoli (DIM nutrients)
isn't released until you chew them to combine two phytochemicals
By Mike Adams
Broccoli and related vegetables such as cabbage and Brussels sprouts naturally
contain a chemical known as glucobrassicin. When these vegetables are crushed
by chewing, a chemical reaction transforms glucobrassicin into indole-3-carbinol
(I3C). In laboratory studies, I3C has been found to have tumor-suppressing
effects, which may partially explain broccoli's cancer-fighting properties.
But the story doesn't end there: When broccoli is digested, two molecules of
I3C combine to form a single molecule of 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM). DIM,
like I3C, has been linked to cancer-fighting properties in laboratory studies,
and also to immune-boosting effects. The I3C/DIM story provides a telling
example of why eating healthy foods is always superior to taking extracts or
other synthetic food-derived products. Read more…

Patients With Pacemakers Should Avoid MRI Scans
2012-04-26 08:28:32
(HealthDay News) --
MRI scans can pose a serious risk to people with heart pacemakers, researchers
warn.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration researchers exposed pacemakers to a simulated
MRI magnetic field and then measured the electrical voltage produced at the tip
of the pacemaker lead, where it would touch the interior of the patient's
heart.
The exposure to MRI magnetic pulses caused certain pacemakers to deliver a
drastically altered pulse and stimulate the heart inappropriately, which could
have serious consequences for a patient, the study authors reported in the Dec.
14 edition of BioMedical Engineering OnLine.
"MRI systems emit several types of extremely intense magnetic fields and
have caused injury to patients due to interactions with pacemakers," study
author Howard Bassen said in a news release from the journal's publisher.
"Cardiologists who choose to scan patients with cardiac pacemakers must
assess the risks versus the benefits of the scan. This paper identifies one...

Heart surgeon openly admits low-fat diets recommended for years
2012-04-21 07:03:48
by: Jonathan Benson
The belief that maintaining a low-fat diet promotes health and prevents disease is perhaps the single biggest misconception responsible for today's epidemics of high cholesterol, obesity, heart disease and early death. In a recent report, Dr. Dwight Lundell, a former heart surgeon with 25 years of experience, admits that low-fat diets are actually responsible for destroying health, and explains why consuming fats in proper balance with one another is vital for protecting the body from disease-causing inflammation.Read more...

Cholesterol Deposits Around Eyes Linked to Heart Risk
2012-04-13 08:37:55
(HealthDay News) -- Men and women who develop visible deposits of cholesterol in the skin around their eyelids appear to face a higher risk of heart disease in general and suffering a heart attack in particular, new Danish research suggests.
The link between the skin condition and heart disease, however, is characterized as an association, rather than a clear case of "cause and effect."
Nonetheless, the study team led by Dr. Anne Tybjaerg-Hansen, from the department of clinical biochemistry at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark, said that the finding could perhaps help physicians screen for heart disease.
And the research, published in the Sept. 15 online edition of the BMJ, "could be of particular value in societies where access to laboratory facilities and thus lipid profile measurement is difficult," the authors said in a journal news release.
Individuals who have the raised yellow patches around the eyes that indicate the collection of cholesterol in the skin -- known a...

Moderate Drinking Guards the Heart
2012-03-30 02:02:04
(HealthDay News) -- A Spanish study has found that long-term moderate
drinking decreased the risk of heart disease by up to one-third in men
and to a lesser degree in women.
The type of alcohol -- beer,
wine or spirits -- made no difference, the researchers reported in the
Nov. 19 online issue of Heart. The Spanish analysis used 10-year data on
15,500 men and nearly 26,000 women who were participants in the
European Prospective Investigation into Cancer study.
But for men, there was a point at which the coronary benefits of alcohol declined, and risk began to rise again.
The
rate of coronary heart disease for non-drinking women in the study was
56 per 100,000. For women listed as low drinkers, averaging less than 5
grams a day, it was 42. For women who were moderate drinkers (5 to 30
grams a day), it was 36; for high drinkers (30 to 90 grams a day) it was
12; and for heavy drinkers (more than 90 grams a day) it was 12.
The
rates for men were 398 per 100,000 for those wh...

Learn How to Detox with a Coconut Oil Cleanse
2012-03-22 08:22:19
by: Elizabeth WallingWith fad detox methods around every corner, it's hard to know which one can provide a healthy cleanse without unpleasant side effects. A coconut oil detox is an excellent way to cleanse without using complicated formulas or living off nothing but water for days on end. Coconut oil is a powerful cleansing food that also provides plenty of natural energy during a detox.Coconut oil is largely comprised of medium-chain fatty acids, which are sent directly to the liver for energy rather than storage. This type of fat is ideal for a cleanse, since it can provide the energy needed at a time when less food is being consumed. These same medium-chain fatty acids play a crucial role in cleansing the body from toxins. Coconut oil is heralded as a natural health food, and...
