The good thing about liver spots is that they are preventable, but that's about it.There is nothing better that can be said about their emergence in the skin. They look ugly and if, in the rare case they are harmful, they could turn out to be melanoma (skin cancer). Years of exposure to sun usually cause liver spots or solar lentigines that are grayish, black or brown in color to appear in the skin. Also called age spots (as they mostly are seen in older age groups), these blemishes are very noticeable on the back of the hands and in the face; less so on the shoulders or the arms. Accompanied by wrinkling, age spots are cosmetically not that great to have on the body and there are cosmetic surgery treatments to remedy them.Skin bleaching loti...
Critics might be concerned about the portrayal of beauty in UK reality shows, but if there is one thing they are convinced about, it is the European concept of beauty. Something that they don't take very lightly. The good thing about such a mindset is that many Europeans and the British in particular are heading to the States in an effort to preserve their beauty and save a few bucks while they are at it. The Wall Street Journal noticed this change and reported on it earlier this month. The savings they say, amount to nearly 25 percent and are literally a fraction of what patients pay in Europe on plastic surgery. The American dollar is to blame for this trend, as it has fallen 25 percent against the Euro and eleven percent against the British p...
Anybody who has experienced a migraine will agree that it bestows just about the most awful pain ever on a person. The corrugator supercilii muscle that occurs in the forehead region is believed to be a key player in why people suffer from migraines. Cosmetic surgeons recently discovered a cosmetic surgery technique that can reduce this problem and probably do away with it completely.Usually removed to reduce the frown lines that occur as people age, the corrugator supercilii muscle's absence was found to bring relief to many candidates who faced migraine problems. The removal reduced the pressure placed on the nerves in the forehead area and as a result, relieved the candidate from the splitting and at times nauseous headaches that characteriz...
You might remember the segment on the Oprah Winfrey Show when a man called Thomas Beatie announced to the world that he is pregnant. While it seemed a bit unusual at first, the world quickly picked up the piece and began avidly chatting, dissecting and discussing the repercussions of such a decision. One faction argued about the confusion that the child might have about his parents and yet another questioned the morality of the situation. The thing is, Thomas is a transgender and had a gender change by removing his breasts in a breast surgery procedure. However, unlike most transgenders, Thomas selected to retain his reproductive organs in the hopes of conceiving a child.Thomas and his wife Nancy's hopes were fulfilled last week with the birth of a healthy baby girl via a natur...
Recently the new president for the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Howard Webster laid out some new directives about plastic surgery practices in Australia. One of the things he is aiming for is a revise of plastic surgery advertising practices and laws.He says, "The legalisation of medical advertising in 1994 in Australia has led to an influx of non surgeons advertising themselves as 'cosmetic surgeons'. Some of them use smoke and mirrors to hide their lack of specialist training, substituting bogus qualifications instead."Incidentally, a similar move initiated in America years back and Webster hopes to emulate the same in Australian circles. He goes on to add, "People who are often vulnerable are bombarded with false and misleading advertising for potentially dangero...
If you are like me then the first thing you probably do when you wake up in the morning is glance in the mirror. While on most days my reflection tends to be rather agreeable, there are certainly some days where I simply can't bear to look at myself. I'm sure all of you would agree with this feeling. But what if day after day, the image that stares back at you dissatisfies you for some reason or another? It could be a few wrinkles here a droopy, oily nose there, it could be anything. If you would rather improve this situation you could give some thought to a face lift procedure. Combine it with treatments like microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing, filler treatments, etc. and you could find a fantastic solution to ...
What would you think about keeping your teenage girl from a liposuction surgery while encouraging her to develop a strong community spirit? The Department of Health and Human Services' division on Women's Health has tried to do just this and been successful to a large extent with the help of a program called BodyWorks. Launched in 2006 BodyWorks trains instructors and provides free training material but stipulates that communities arrange for the resources if they want to keep the trainers. In an age where even teenage girls from lower middle class families are falling prey to the obesity bug, this program comes in at the right time. Despite the stress schools and other child care i...
You have to grant it to these innovative cosmetic surgeons. A fashion show with cosmetic surgery patients modeling their successful surgeries is right there in the conversation-starter list. A plastic surgeon held a 'coming out' party for patients whose faces and bodies were altered by him in New York earlier in the month. The combination of top-line designers and cosmetic surgery is enough to glamorize the minds of most women and apparently that's exactly what this surgeon had in mind. According to him the show would be able to 'lure new patients that he may not have had otherwise.' The effort to de-glamorize plastic surgery might be commendable but how ethical is it t...
It takes a lot of hard work to keep a body like Carmen Electra's in shape and a little help from cosmetic surgery every now and then is acceptable. The former Baywatch and Playboy beauty has an image to live up to which is why she probably had a breast augmentation to upgrade her breasts by a few cups. Now combine a breast surgery with a liposuction to iron out unruly contours and you have one lush body to be proud of. You have to hand it to Carmen though- she also fit in a fat transfer surgery to keep the curves rocking in other parts of her body. The fat removed from her body during the liposuction procedure was transplanted in her lips, buttocks and face. Cosmetic surgeons at times combine a fat transplant surge...
Had a yen to ask a doctor about that rad new eyelid surgery treatment to bust wrinkles while stuck in a traffic jam? Need to have a quickie consultation with your surgeon while waiting for your business conference to begin? Then all you need to be is a bit more tech-savvy and read on. New York residents especially are lucky where healthcare is concerned because doctors from NYU Langone Medical Center actually reach out to their patients. A select group of physicians and specialists have collaborated with Sirius Satellite Radio and have launched a medical station called Doctor Radio. Check them out- they are already drawing in rave reviews and helping people in everything from a chin reduction surgery to warning sign...
Absolutely not! Which is what Sheyla Hershey's plastic surgeon and any other surgeon in his right mind would tell you (if they say otherwise, they are obviously the wrong cosmetic surgeons for you). But Sheyla is very determined to have a breast augmentation for the ninth time in an effort to fulfill her long-time dream. It's a dream that has left her carrying around at least two liters of silicone in her breasts. Eight breast augmentations have left Sheyla with a breast cup sized 34-FFF and a yearning to increase it to a double G-cup. Normally, women who are endowed with such large-sized breasts naturally opt for a breast reduction procedure. Complaints of back pain and difficulty in breathing and locomotion are not uncommon among such women.  ...
These days talking about liposuction brings conflicting things to mind. There are the benefits of a professional liposuction procedure that are touted in almost the same breath as the death of someone during the operation. While it is disturbing to come across such snippets for us in the plastic surgery profession, it is perhaps more disturbing when we hear news of giving general practitioners the go ahead to perform a liposuction surgery. In Singapore, the Health Ministry is set on granting GPs permission to perform liposuction procedures involving removal of less than a litre of fat on patients. These liposuction treatments need to be performed under general anesthesia. Now cosmetic surgeons who are members of the ASPS ...
Cheeks are important and no mistake about it. Last month Science Daily reported a study that brought to light the importance of the deep fat compartments located in the cheeks of a person and its direct relation to his or her youthful appearance. The study was published in the ASPS' Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal's June edition and is reiterated by the analysis conducted by cosmetic surgeons at the UT Southwestern Medical Center. These researchers identified four cheek-fat compartments submerged deep in the facial skin. Through a treatment similar to a face implant surgery these compartments were methodically boosted in candidates with hollow cheeks. Cosmetic surgeons nor...
The VBLOCTM vagal blocking therapy is touted as one of the most advanced technologies to hit the obesity-reduction market in a long time. This implantable medical device could remove the need for a bariatric surgery, making it much easier on the patient who is obese or overweight. While not as extreme as any other weight loss surgery, the vagal nerve blocking device nonetheless provides significant weight reduction in the patient. The device works similar to a heart pacemaker but unlike the latter it makes use of high-frequency electricity to block the nerve impulses between the brain, the tummy and the pancreas. These blocking signals are used to influence how the stomach functions and digests food. ...
In a shoot for Heat Magazine Myleene Klass primped up for the camera without any makeup. Honestly, she looks so very different from the sophisticate she portrays in her various appearances that she left me puzzled with her appearance. A look at Myleene's pictures made me pay special attention to her eyes which have an Oriental slant to them and also made me realize that she has a mild lazy eye. With the war paint on she looks like an exotic Hawaiian beach babe and nothing remotely like the mommy she looks like sans makeup. While makeup is one way to hide raw facial features and enhance them, eyelid surgery is another more permanent way to build up on physical flaws that bother. As much as peop...
Firstly let's get the term GP sorted out. GPs or general practitioners generally provide primary care to a patient. They are very often the first contact a patient has with a treatment facility or a medical consultation. Family doctors are a common name for them. While the incredible knowledge a GP possesses is commendable and very trustworthy how far will you go to trust your family doctor to perform a liposuctionsurgery? The Health Ministry of Singapore thinks GPs can be trusted to perform a liposuction procedure though and are set to pass a redraft of guidelines for this cosmetic surgery procedure. If the move goes unopposed, GPs will be legalized to administer a liposuction surgery u...
Couple of things going on in our very own US of A brings newer facets of the plastic surgery profession to light. For instance, there is the fight to hang on to cosmetic surgery by a faithful few. Reuters reported ASDS studied trends that noticed the American economy instead of discouraging people from spending on cosmetic surgery (still a luxury for the masses), is doing just the opposite. Individuals are downsizing their needs and going in for injectable filler treatments that are less costly then a traditional face lift. Similarly, people are opting for an injection lipolysis instead of a liposuction procedure, a fille...
When shows like Extreme Makeover and Dr. 90210 aired on mainstream television in the US, the dam burst for cosmetic surgery. Perfectly ordinary people were seen stepping up to the cosmetic surgeon's table and emerging as glamorous individuals. The face of plastic surgery in the US sure received a makeover of its own! There is a similar wave of change set to attack India, the land of mythology and deep-set Hindu values. Plans are on to air a show called Naya Roop Nayi Zindagi (New Look New Life) which will be shot in Extreme Makeover format. Just like its Western counterpart, the show is expected to feature Indians from every walk of life getting procedures l...
Tiger Woods is gonna be one lucky guy when enters his old age. According to a Swedish study, researchers discovered that golf is very intimately connected to longevity. Who would have thought that this posh (and boring) sport would be the key to live longer! According to Professor Anders Ahlbom and Bahman Farahmand who helmed the study, "A round of golf means being outside for four or five hours, walking at a fast pace for six to seven kilometres, something which is known to be good for the health." But what do you do with a long life if you have to enjoy it with a face that looks past its prime? The way I see it, you have two options- either follow granny's nutrition plan from a very young age or maintain your looks with a litt...
Earlier in the year, researchers at the Duke University Medical Center discovered that patients above 60-years were more at risk for long-term cognitive problems after going through elective surgery procedures. Cosmetic surgery too falls under this classification leading to some amount of concern among individuals who favor it and have had it. The study found a lot of young and middle-aged and elderly patients experiencing postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) when they were discharged. Within three months, patients aged 60 and above were found to exhibit POCD more than the other age groups. While researchers cannot pinpoint the exact causes of POCD, anesthesia administration during surgery is believed to be one of the triggers of this con...
The Emerald Country’s name has been popping up a lot lately and from the look of things Ireland could suffer a serious setback in its leap to the list of countries to visit for cosmeticsurgery. The cosmetic surgery story making headlines in Ireland and the rest of world is about a 48-year-old woman who is believed to have died as a result of faulty hospital equipment. Bernadette Reid-Kavanagh died after coming out from her gastric band surgery in February this year. If it weren’t for the machine that was supposed to monitor her blood pressure, pulse and oxygen backfiring, Bernadette it is alleged would have still been alive. Doc...
Cosmetic enhancement of some sort or another is just one of the common denominators binding those in the top ten slots on the Forbes Most Powerful Celebrity list existing. While not many on the list may have come out-and-out about their cosmetic surgery, an occasional interest in it is no secret. It’s understandable, after all celebrities are the faces of the forces that come along with culture- be it fashion or the arts. A beautiful face is worth as much as the story behind it. Let’s take Oprah Winfrey the leader of this list’s influentia. She is believed to have had a nose enhancement, a chin implant and a breast lift. Angelina Jolie follows a similar pattern with various skin treatments thrown in for good measure as does Beyonce with he...
Somehow I keep reverting to that most ambiguous and mysterious places on the planet- the Middle East. While the tumultuous newsflashes are as much to blame for my constant visits, it is also the plastic surgery trends in this region that draw me. There is a wave of change going about in the Arab countries no doubt, but certain aspects look like they are still soaking and dripping with hardcore tradition. I’m talking about the Islamic conception of virginity which is insisted on being followed by unmarried women. A woman who is believed to have a ruptured hymen is not ‘respectable’ and has no status in Islamic society. Driven by this need for hymen-preservation, women studying and living abroad and no longer ‘virgins’ have a
One of my favorite actresses, Catherine Zeta Jones has been looking rather unglamorous lately. For a woman whose every move exuded charisma and impeccable oomph, this new CZJ is someone I simply can’t bear to look at. Her curves defined her and most of her roles had her essaying roles about strong women with more than a hint of the exotic. She was simply perfect in The Mask of Zorro and compared to her latest rom-com The Rebound, the difference is very apparent. Catherine has had very less need to add or modify her body with plastic surgery. Though she doesn’t confirm it, cosmetic surgeons and fans are certain she has had a breast augmentation and eyelid surgery somewhere down the line. Her curvy body looked less augmented when s...
June is the month for all things fatherly with Father’s Day the main celebration to look forward to. The Father’s Day celebration was born out of a daughter’s appreciation for the selfless and courageous life led by her father, a single father of 6 children. The first celebration was held in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated on the 15th of June and has reached a status similar to Mother’s Day. At the Plastic Surgery Institute of California it is the perfect excuse to tell you dads about the numerous ways you can indulge yourself in. Mommies and children, you can take notes too. For men looking for something minimal and less invasive, we have microdermabrasion treatments and relaxing massage...
Faye Dunaway is the quintessential Madame of yester-year Hollywood and as a member of the Joan Rivers, Jane Fonda, and Bridgette Bardot brigade, Faye too has an image to maintain. Notorious for her various cosmetic surgery urges and alterations Faye looked liked she had things in control at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Her face was nothing like the wrinkly and dull face she had a couple of years back. Eyes had been lifted into place and cheeks looked properly full. Her mouth too looked ripe and enclosed dental veneers that sparkled and appeared cut-to-fit. A face lift surgery accompanied by various minor plastic surgery treatments were guessed at and like the lady she is Faye let nothing out. Lately spotted with a trout-pout as she stepped out to buy a pair of sunglasses...
Oh yeah… You heard that right. But the Batman I’m referring to is the latest one to don the caped crusader’s cape- Christian Bale. Last year a study headed by the Polish University of Gdansk conducted detailed research and found out that height, waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index and waist-to-chest ratio are the vital stats when measuring attractiveness in males. According to their measures Christian Bale was found to fit the mould of the perfect man flawlessly. There’s no doubt that 34-year-old Christian is a fine specimen of the male species, but the important fact remains that much of his attraction lies in his physical fitness. Now if you worked on your physique properly and left the appearance to plastic surgery I’m certain that th...
On the one hand there’s LA’s plasticized family keeping the cosmetic surgery torch held high and on the other there is a snout-nosed actress questioning the way society perceives beauty. What’s common between these two stories? They are both related and enacted by people who have been in the spotlight and are beautiful in their own way- Kim Kardashian and Christina Ricci. Keeping up with the Kardashians is a reality show that documents the lives, loves and exploits of the predominantly female Kardashian/Jenner families. Kim Kardashian the second daughter of Kris Jenner and Robert Kardashian is the focal point of the series and fodder for the ratings the show brings in. Kim, it is a widely accepted fact, is a plastic surgery poster-girl and in the latest episode has a celluli...
Before any major red carpet event the dazzling ladies of Hollywood (and some dashing men as well) are known to indulge their body in every aesthetic treatment and dabble with the plastic surgeon’s knife. From seemingly innocent hair extensions and dental veneers to major elective cosmetic surgery procedures like face lift surgery, rhinoplasty and breast augmentations, beauty is pursued in all its forms and no promise is left unchecked. Cosmetic foot surgery is just one of these treatments and not surprisingly finds a lot of takers. However, I must add here that the requests that they put forward to plastic surgeons sometimes border on the atrocious to the ridiculous and could have dangerous consequences. Toe shortening and arch surgery to fit into shoes, ankle shaving foot and t...
People have always extolled the good in jogging regularly and keeping the body in shape via religiously exercising, working out, etc. Start comparing weight loss by jogging to weight loss via plasticsurgery and the voice of reason in the room will immediately tell you what’s good for you (viz. exercise). But what the VOR rarely sees is the finer print. The finer print talks about what exercise and cosmetic surgery respectively do for the environment. In their own way, they can be equally harmful. Studies found cosmetic surgery procedures like liposuction and tummy tuck- that revolve around fat removal- involve an average of 1000 tons of carbon emission into the atmospher...
It’s fascinating the little things that surveys and clinical studies throw up. For instance, there was the study that the Oregon State University conducted which found that global warming in the next forty years would not only melt away snow but would also affect one of the best recreations that the rich enjoy- skiing. Now where would our socialites go when they are bored with the gossip circles! Cause and effect, everything is the result of something and vice versa- fundamental fact in the universe. The latest study published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal of the ASPS had me thinking on the same lines. The study which was conducted by Yale University found that when presented with candidate faces digitally altered to show simulated eyelid surgery effects the...
Aah! Sex and the City has finally released in NYC- the city it was conceptualized for and fans are showing no signs of ebbing their enthusiasm or excitement. I for one am totally stoked with all the designer wear and shining, happy faces and skin on display. There’s nothing like a well-put together woman looking her glowing best wrapped in a dazzler of a dress. It doesn’t matter if it’s the skinny Sarah Jessica Parker, the slender Cynthia Nixon, the voluptuous vixen-like Kim Cattrall or the demure and very proportionate Kristin Davis- the ladies know how to look good anyhow anyway. It’s another matter the little nip and tucks the SATC girls might have had over the years by lieu of come cosmetic surgery. Bu...
The BBC reported last Thursday a new trend noticed in plastic surgery practices in Britain- a migration to foreign climes for surgery procedures. The article went on to state that plastic surgery patients look towards Poland largely, for plastic surgery procedures that are offered at half-rate prices and are equivalent to British cosmetic surgery quality-wise. If you remember, there were similar trends noticed in America as well where plastic surgery in Los Angeles was favored for cosmetic surgery procedures in South American locales like Brazil, Costa Rica and Argentina. While plastic surgery in foreign countries may be offered at a lo...
Has the time of the curvy femme fatale come? The judges at America’s Next Top Model sure think so. In a first of sorts, Whitney Thompson- a U.S. size 10, actually got past the tough competition and became the first woman to do so in the show’s history. But I’m not surprised and in fact am rather pleased with such a spectacular assertion of womanly curves. Tyra Banks, the host and one of the judges on the show, is known for her weight issues as her weight regularly fluctuates. Also traditionally, the show features at least one model considered to be plus-sized. It’s a good thing for all the curvy or let’s say- full-figured women out there as 20-year-old Whitney hopes to reach out to the multitudes of youngsters with eating disorders and weight issues. She says, “I've...
Doris Garrison (Kelly’s mommy) brought up her kids the right way and we really admire her for that! The first wise thing Doris Garrison did was leave her no-good husband when little Kelly was a lot younger. This single mom raised her child with a lot of help from Tina Knowles (Beyonce’s mother) and set her firmly on the path to fame as a member of Destiny’s Child. The second wisest thing mamma Doris did was refuse teenage Kelly a breast augmentation surgery. In my opinion, this is the wisest thing she did. In an interview with World Entertainment News Network, Kelly remembers her mom telling her, “Let your body finish developing” and reflects on her good fortune to have taken her advice. Now wish we had more mum and dads advising their teenage children similarly on any p...
Of Jamaican-Chinese descent and a one-time runway queen, Naomi Campbell has turned 38 and is still as tempestuous as ever. She was seen rushing from P Diddy’s VIP party in tears and visibly upset. What could the woman have to cry for when she has everything anyone would die for? Once upon a time she used to be the ‘Perfect Woman’ and if appearances are anything to go by, she still is. The title I am referring to was awarded to Naomi in a research study conducted by the University of Gdansk in Poland. The scientists found that the perceptions of beauty are ruled principally by the span of the thighs and the length of the calves. And Naomi apparently, possesses the perfect ratio of both. Read more about this finding here. It’s not surp...
Once upon a time a girl from Essex looked like a wealthy heiress named Paris Hilton. She was so good at it that she modeled as a look-alike for the poor little rich girl (who was so very spoilt) and was ‘affectionately’ called Paris Travelodge. Today, Chantelle Houghton has transformed herself into the overtly buxom Katie Price and has her own look-alike courtesy the very same modeling agency she used to work for. And all this was because of some cosmetic surgery work in choice parts of her body. But be warned readers, Chantelle is an excellent example of plastic surgery gone overboard. Or should we say a breast augmentation junkie? The first non-celebrity to star in Celebrit...
A lot of people don’t remember The Nolan Sisters- the Irish siblings that were a pop phenomenon in the 70’s- anymore. But with their appearance on a new reality show called Pop Goes the Band a comeback seems to be in the cards. The show is all about getting the participants (which are various bands) to look like how they did when they were at the peak of their careers. A team of plastic surgeons, dietitians, fitness experts and stylists are expected to work their magic on these one-time music darlings. Before The Corrs became Ireland’s export to mainstream international pop music, The Nolan Sisters ruled the roost. Incidentally, both these groups consist of siblings. The group first included the mother-father duo who along with their family...
It’s sad when something like this happens. For a man or woman in showbiz getting past the first year of marriage in itself is a miracle in itself. So when the divorce bug hit Canadian singer and songwriter Shania Twain and her music producer husband Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange after 14 years of marriage it was heartbreaking. One of the most progressive and assertive female country music artists, Shania enjoyed amazing success for a small-town girl from Canada. Her musical talents were honed right from her childhood by her parents. To her credit, Shania has stayed away from the media hullabaloo that hounds every celebrity touched by the spotlight. She has never been in the news for any plastic surgery rumor, has kept adulterer tendencies at bay and had more-or-less carved out a safe ...
When two renowned cosmeticsurgery boards unite to generate consumer awareness, the result is a fab site called Beauty for Life. A joint effort of the ASPS and the ASAPS, this portal aims to get the consumer know better about any cosmetic surgery decision he has to make. The site prickled my curiosity and I popped over for a dekko. What I seen left me suitably impressed. I had to create an account first and enter in details like age, height, weight, skin tone and gender. My lifestyle was then analyzed which included smoking habits, diets, exercise, sun exposure, etc. In the next step, just like how a good pla...
