The Most Common Myths about Abs
2008-01-21 09:39:12
Myth #1
Abdominal muscle is different from regular muscle.
Your abdominal muscles are just like every other muscle in your body. The abdominal is different only in location and unlike biceps or quads they don't rest on a bony surface. So you should train them the same way you would train, say, your biceps or your chest. The basic laws of physiology apply to all your muscles, including your abs. This means that you have to do exercises in the correct plane of movement to effectively work the muscle.
Myth #2
You have to train your abs everyday.

3 Steps To Great Abs!
2008-01-21 09:31:49
Myth: You need to work your abs everyday.
Truth: The best way to develop abdominal strength and tone is to work your abs to exhaustion. You need to allow your abdominal muscles to recover..this equates to 24-48 hours of rest time between workouts. Increase the intensity of your workouts gradually. If you overdo it, not only will you be excessively sore (a little soreness is a good thing, it signifies that you have worked the muscle enough for it to repair itself and become stronger in the process), but you may discourage yourself because you will need more rest time than normal and it will be harder to do your ab exercises.
Myth: The more situps you do, the better.

The Captain's Chair is good for ab exercise
2008-01-14 11:04:30
This ab exercise is often overlooked. It is an advanced abdominal exercise, therefore it is very important that you keep your lower back stable. Do not arch your back during this exercise. If you can't do it correctly, then you shouldn’t do it at all.
Stand on a chair and grip the handles to stabilize your upper body. Press your back against the pad and slowly lift knees towards your chest. Again make sure to keep your lower back firmly in place - otherwise you won't be strengthening your abs, but your hip muscles.
You should also feel the tightening and burning in your abs after a few reps. If you don't, you're probably not doing the exercise properly.

You got to move it … move it!
2008-01-11 00:55:27
Long article from http://www.sfbayview.com, enjoy
Non-essential fat exists primarily within fat cells located just below the skin and around the major organs. It is called adipose tissue or depot fat. This is the fat we want to burn to achieve an ideal body composition.
Losing the five pounds of fat the average person gains during the holiday season is like running backwards uphill. It's hard ... but you can do it!
The bad news about fat is that it looks awful when it accumulates around your abdomen, hips, arms and thighs. Fat is associated with a very high risk of medical illness and premature death when it comprises more than 40 percent of your total body weight.

What is cellulite
2008-01-08 02:48:00
Cellulite is the lumpy substance resembling cottage cheese that is commonly found on the thighs, stomach, and butt. Cellulite is actually a fancy name for collections of fat that push against the connective tissue beneath a person's skin, which causes the surface of the skin to dimple or pucker and look lumpy.
You can check to see if you have cellulite by pinching the skin around your upper thigh. If it looks a bit lumpy, you probably have it. And if you do have cellulite, you're definitely not alone: Most girls and women - and some men - have cellulite.

Did you know? What Causes Cellulite?
2008-01-08 02:45:42
Besides excess fat in their thighs, many women complain to me about a certain type of fat known as cellulite. They tell me that no matter how much weight they lose, they can't seem to smooth out the tiny lumps of fat on their thighs. Indeed, some of the most slender women have cellulite.
Cellulite is created when fat manages to push its way through tiny holes in your connective tissue, the thick web of interwoven fibers just underneath your skin. Strong and healthy connective tissue forms a tighter web of interwoven fibers, preventing fat from pressing its way through. Weak, unhealthy connective tissue, on the other hand, more easily stretches apart, allowing tiny fat pockets to poke through.

2007-12-30 11:24:05
Eating a high-fat, high-carb fast food meal produces damaging cellular changes that are greater and longer-lasting in obese people than in normal-weight people, a new study shows.
Dr. Paresh Dandona and colleagues from Kaleida Health in Buffalo, New York looked at inflammation and oxidative stress, which occurs when levels of normal byproducts of metabolism known as free radicals exceed the body's ability to neutralize them.
In previous research they found that obese individuals have higher levels of oxidative stress and inflammation than normal-weight individuals. They also demonstrated that eating a high-fat, high-carb meal increased oxidative stress and inflammation in normal-weight people.

Stop Wasting Time with Useless Ab Exercises and Start Burning Fat
2007-12-28 02:10:29
I've been a Fitness Professional for over a decade as a personal trainer and a nutrition specialist, and I have to say that the biggest confusion I still see is regarding losing that stubborn belly fat that most people have around their midsection.
Although it's been beaten to death, I still need to convince people that doing crunches, leg lifts, situps, and obliques exercises are NOT going to help them lose their belly fat and love handles. Ok, we all know by now that spot reduction doesn't work, so why is it that whenever someone tells me that they are trying to get rid of their stomach, they start talking about all of the crunches and other abs exercises they've been doing, pumping away for hundreds of reps a day with no results?

Can dietary supplements help me lose weight?
"Eat! Eat! Eat! And Always Stay Thin! No Diet, No Exercise!" Sounds great, doesn't it? Unfortunately, you'll have a hard time responding to this particular ad. For one thing, it dates to the early 1900's. And, to make matters worse, pharmacies no longer sell the miracle product: sanitized tape worms.
Weight loss products have changed in the last century, but the pitches remain the same. Indeed, many herbs, supplements, and diet pills promise results that would put even the most efficient tape worms to shame. Of course it's no secret that many of these products are fraudulent. But is it possible that a few of them really can live up to their claims?

Leptin is a protein produced by fats that appear to play an important role in how the body manages fat storage through brain signals. Years ago it was thought by scientists that lower leptin levels would increase appetite. Current research has now found that it does just the opposite and decreases appetite. There is clear evidence that green tea's polyphenols (EGCG) are a factor in depressing leptin as well as affecting other hormone levels important in regulating appetite.

You've seen the ads promising successful weight loss by taking diet drugs or weight loss supplements, but do they really deliver results? Could weight loss medications and over-the-counter supplements really help to reverse the obesity epidemic?
Experts who spoke to WebMD agreed that there's no such thing as a quick fix or magic bullet when it comes to losing weight. Weight loss medications (not to be confused with dietary supplements) can help you lose weight, but only if you also cut calories and get moving. And effective weight loss, they say, is slow and gradual -- anywhere from 1/2 to 2 pounds per week, even with the help of diet drugs.

When preparing green tea, be sure not to use boiling water, as this will cause the tea to be bitter. Also, the longer the tea steeps, the more bitter it will taste.

Adjusting PSA Scores For Obese Men Or Cancers May Be Missed
2007-12-06 02:45:06
"Obese men have more blood circulating throughout their bodies than normal weight men, and as a result, the concentration of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, in the blood -- the gold standard for detecting prostate cancer -- can become diluted," said Stephen Freedland, M.D., a Duke urologist and senior researcher on the study.*
"We've known for a while that obese men tend to have lower PSA scores than normal weight men, but our study really proposes a reason why this happens, and points to the need for an adjustment in the way we interpret PSA scores that will take body weight into account. If not, we may be missing a large number of cancers each year."
