Dr Reddy's follows Teva on Nexium
2008-06-25 03:50:00
Dr Reddy's is the second company to file for such a declaratory judgement on Nexium.Teva had filed for the same on May 6.The suit is to trigger the exclusivity on the drug before the expiry of the patents in 2014, a Dr Reddy's spokesperson said, confirming the filing.Ranbaxy Labs has the exclusivity on the generic version of Nexium, which is now the world's second-largest selling drug with sales of $5.2 billion in 2007. ...

Teva seeks judgment on Astra's Nexium patents
2008-05-27 16:02:00
The Anglo-Swedish drugmaker had sued Israel-based Teva for infringement of some patents covering the ulcer pill and Teva is asking the court to require AstraZeneca to either sue it on these patents, or declare the patents are non-infringed or invalid, Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Ronny Gal said in a research note."This is part of Teva's strategy to trigger the exclusivity of Nexium," he said. ...

AstraZeneca shares soar after Nexium settlement
2008-04-20 06:14:00
Barclays analyst Andy Penman said the terms of the settlement give a "very strong indication" that the patents over Nexium will be upheld in any future litigation. He said most analysts have argued AstraZeneca should trade at a discount to its peers because of the uncertainty over litigation. Tuesday's settlement should remove some of this caution on the stock, though it may not have an impact on earnings expectations, Penman said.As well as a license to produce Nexium in the future, Ranbaxy will benefit from outsourcing agreements to formulate a portion of AstraZeneca's U.S. supply of the drug and its active pharmaceutical ingredient. ...

2008-04-05 17:30:00
LONDON (Reuters) - A study showing Crestor reduces the risk of death and heart problems in some patients with low or normal cholesterol will be key to the future sales of the medicine, its maker AstraZeneca Plc (AZN.L) said on Tuesday."It's very important," the Anglo-Swedish group's Chief Executive David Brennan told Reuters."It is consistent with the message that we have continued to deliver, which is that Crestor is a best-in-class product in this segment of the market." ...

My gut instinct tells me to nix Nexium
2008-03-18 16:37:00
I will admit to a gut instinct about the recent Food and Drug Administration announcement that the pharmaceutical drug Nexium -- you might know it from TV ads as the "purple pill" -- has been approved for use among children ages 1 to 11 years old. Nexium was approved a few years ago for kids 12 and older who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.The news makes me wince. Any drug for GERD, whether taken by adult or child, is not intended to be an early treatment. But let's face it: Some doctors and patients (and now, potentially, parents) are quick to seek out a pill that will "solve" the digestive problem, which is caused by weakening of a muscle or sphincter in the lower esophagus. ...

Health Canada says no evidence of cardiac risk from Nexium
2008-02-28 05:23:00
The department says it will continue to monitor safety data for Nexium (esomeprazole) as it is produced, but at this point does not see a link between the drug and cardiovascular risks. But the department says the picture is less clear for another heartburn drug, Losec (omeprazole). It says after a thorough analysis, Health Canada cannot definitively say if there is a potential for increased cardiovascular risk in people taking the drug on a long-term basis. ...

Ranbaxy gets tentative OK for Nexium generic
2008-02-10 03:25:00
The approval means Ranbaxy will be allowed to manufacture and market esomeprazole in two different dosages.Ranbaxy believes it has first-to-file status on the drug, which would potentially give it 180 days of marketing exclusivity. The company said Nexium is the second-largest selling drug in the U.S. with annual sales of $5.5 billion. ...

AstraZeneca says generic Protonix will hit Nexium
2008-02-03 17:54:00
The U.S. launch of two generic forms of Wyeth's (WYE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) ulcer drug Protonix will inevitably impact volume demand and increase pressure on prices for rival branded medicines, including Nexium, AstraZeneca Plc (AZN.L: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday.Chief Executive David Brennan declined to quantify the impact in a conference call with reporters. ...

Pharmaceuticals, patents and the poor
2008-01-28 00:47:00
Probably the most widely quoted example of this kind of thing is the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca marketing of their heartburn drug Nexium. Nexium is virtually identical to an older AstraZeneca drug called Prilosec and has not convincingly been shown to be any more effective than that drug. However, since the patent on Prilosec expired in 2001, AstraZeneca has spent a fortune on promoting Nexium - which is still under patent – as being superior to Prilosec. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Nexium was the most heavily direct-to-customer marketed drug in the US in 2005. ...

Some Medications Can Be Difficult, Even Dangerous, To Stop
2008-01-22 03:47:00
Savvy patients have learned that it is essential to ask physicians and pharmacists about side effects before they take any medicine. Drugs can cause reactions that range from mild discomfort to life-threatening complications.Even a thoughtful consumer may forget another crucial question: What will happen when I stop this medication? Many drugs can cause trouble if they are stopped ...

Prilosec May Blunt Plavix Benefit
2008-01-17 13:52:00
Prilosec and other PPI acid-reducing drugs prevent gastric bleeding in stent patients on Plavix -- but the drugs may block Plavix's lifesaving anticlot action. This suggestion comes from a small study of 124 heart patients who received stents to open blocked arteries. All of the patients were treated with Plavix to prevent life-threatening blood clots. Half also received Prilosec, a member of the family of powerful acid-reducing drugs called proton pump inhibitors or PPIs. Other PPIs include Nexium, Prevacid, Aciphex, and Protonix. ...

How drug companies make big bucks or Caveat Emptor
2008-01-16 02:09:00
Just before the patent rights expired AstraZenica, the company that owned the rights on Prilosec, announced another wonderful new discovery which they called Nexium (the purple pill) and got licensed on the basis that it not only was safe it could control and cure reflux esophagitis and even prevent esophageal cancer as well as treat stomach problems due to excess acid. What they have not told the world is that it works no better than Prilosec, and that Prilosec which can now be manufactured by anyone who can meet the FDA standards and is being currently sold for about 1/10th of what it used to cost in this country plus being available without prescription. Nexium on the other hand is a prescription only drug and costs a great deal more than Prilosec. ...

FDA Issues Safety Findings for Omeprazole, Esomeprazole
2008-01-12 11:21:00
The FDA has announced the results of a safety review of the drugs omeprazole, marketed as Prilosec, and esomeprazole, marketed as Nexium, saying that long-term use of these drugs is not likely to be associated with an increased risk of heart problems. Thus, the agency recommends that health care professionals continue to prescribe and patients continue to use these products as described in their package labeling. ...

FDA Says Prilosec and Nexium Not a Heart Risk
2008-01-11 19:20:00
The FDA has confirmed an earlier assessment that there is no evidence of an increased risk of heart attacks or other heart problems with AstraZeneca’s gastrointestinal drugs Prilosec and Nexium. The agency issued a MedWatch alert in August, saying that the drugs did not appear to increase the risk of serious cardiovascular adverse events, but it was still considering whether to take any regulatory action on the products. ...
