2008-06-25 03:44:00
MUMBAI: Sun Pharmaceuticals seems to be getting into one trouble spot after another.Following its spat with Taro, the Israeli pharma major, over a failed merger, Sun is set to face some anxiety over its plans to launch the generic version of US pharma giant Wyeth’s $2.4 billion anti-depression and anxiety disorder drug Effexor XR.US-based Osmotica Pharmaceuticals, which has received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for marketing generic Effexor, has filed a citizen’s petition requesting the FDA to ask all subsequent filers for tablet versions to re-submit their abbreviated new drug applications (ANDA) applications proving bioequivalence to Osmotica’s product as the reference listed drug (RLD). ...

According to the company, the letter included similar requests as the letter issued in December. A company spokesperson told Forbes.com that the FDA is forming an advisory committee to investigate the drug. Wyeth hopes the drug will be approved for both uses at the same time. ...

Most Online Rx Drug Searches Are For Depression Meds
2008-04-20 06:07:00
Judging from their Internet searches of prescription drugs, American consumers are depressed and experiencing some form of sexual dysfunction. According to new research from comScore Pharmaceutical Solutions, five of the most frequently searched prescription drugs for the month of February were depression treatments, while two treated erectile dysfunction.Lauren Kreiberg, senior manager of marketing solutions for comScore, says the anonymity of an Internet search gives consumers a level of freedom to seek out information about highly personal problems. She adds that the anonymity translates to the most commonly searched health conditions, which were topped by pregnancy and cancer, but also included depression, herpes, HIV and HPV. ...

Personal story brings anxiety to light
2008-04-05 17:18:00
Anxiety has emerged as the most prevalent mental health problem in the world, according to the World Mental Health Survey, conducted in 2002 in 18 countries. In the United States, which has the highest level of anxiety in the world, nearly 29 per cent of the population will experience a major episode of anxiety during their life. This anxiety is driven, Pearson believes, by our lack of a sense of place in the world. "To have a sense of place is to have some sense of what your purpose is, what your options are," she said in an interview in Montreal in a stop on her book tour. And many of us don't have that. ...

Uncomfortably numb
2008-03-18 16:23:00
Have you ever tried Ecstasy, or heroin? How about Xanax, or Placidyl, the sedative on which former U.S. Supreme Court chief justice William Rehnquist was reported to be heavily “reliant” for nine years? Any of the opiate or sedative drugs will lend you a sense of how my druggy relief was immeasurably sweet at the start. It felt heaven-sent. Waking up in the predawn hours, in the peaceful silence of my home, I felt a profound sense of safety. My children were sleeping soundly; the city was at rest. All were joined in an unassailable purpose: to lie vulnerably down and to snooze. I was a citizen of Whoville on Christmas Eve, with no inclination to suspect the coming mischief of the Grinch. I treasured this early morning serenity. It was some kind of gift, in those first weeks on an antid ...

2008-03-11 11:24:00
We have discussed lots of topics in the ConsumerHealthDigest.com anxiety and depression forum — symptoms, triggers, stress, anxiety, pms, menopause, depression, and coping skills. But one topic that is sure to turn up week after week is prescription medication. So many people just cannot gain control over their anxiety, and we know that everyday life has become an extremely hectic and stressful endeavor. Unfortunately, human nature pushes us to continually strive for more and achieve bigger and better things. Many times people are able to deal with the pressure of everyday life. However, there are certain individuals that cannot. Those people can suffer from debilitating effects of stress, anxiety, and depression. ...

Wyeth gets FDA backing at last for Effexor follow-up
2008-03-04 05:07:00
However, Wyeth noted that FDA approval was subject to “several post-marketing commitments”, including conducting and submitting data from a new long-term maintenance study. The agency also wants the firm to carry out a sexual dysfunction study, paediatric trials, a study exploring lower doses and an additional non-clinical toxicity trial.Wyeth, which expects to begin shipping Pristiq to wholesalers beginning in the second quarter, will be hoping that sales of the new treatment should help compensate for the loss of earnings once Effexor (venlafaxine) faces generic competition in 2010. The approval of Pristiq comes just over a year after the firm submitted the results of two studies that the FDA had asked for when it issued only an approvable letter for Pristiq. ...

Study finds antidepressants no better than sugar pills
2008-02-28 05:05:00
Study: Four of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants, including Prozac, work no better than placebo sugar pills to help mild to moderate depression, says a study published in PloS (Public Library of Science) Medicine. Irving Kirsch of the department of psychology at Hull University in England and colleagues in the U.S. and Canada compared trial results for patients taking a sugar pill with those given the antidepressants fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Seroxat), venlafaxine (Effexor) and nefazodone (Serzone). They found that patients felt better but those on placebos improved as much as those on the drugs. The only exception: the most severel ...

Difference Between an SNRI and an SSRI
2008-02-23 08:51:00
Effexor is a popular brand name for the drug venlafaxine, a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). By involving norepinephrine, it differs from SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which are marketed under brand names such as Prozac (fluoxetine) and Celexa (citalopram). The pooled study revealed that 5.9% of study participants improved with the SNRI instead of the SSRIs, especially those taking Prozac. Unfortunately, Effexor can trigger some rather unpleasant side effects that frequently lead patients to stop taking it before full benefit is achieved. ...

2008-02-19 04:24:00
shares gained a point to rest at $40.01. Although Wyeth posted higher fourth-quarter earnings and sales, the company also said that 2008 revenue will be flat due to sooner-than-expected generic competition for two of its best-selling products, Effexor and Protonix. ...

Fitch Affirms Wyeth's 'A-' Ratings; Outlook Remains Stable
2008-02-15 15:51:00
Moreover, Wyeth faces the loss of the U.S. market exclusivity for its top-selling drug product, Effexor-XR, in July 2010. Sales of the drug have been negatively affected by lost patent protection in Canada, and may be further impacted by a non-substitutable generic tablet during 2008. Overall, company revenues will slow to no or modest growth in 2008 and 2010 as a result of the intellectual property losses. ...

Big Pharma is at it again! Do you or a family member take a doctor prescribed antidepressant? We are talking about Zoloft, Serzone, Wellbutrin, Paxil, Effexor, Celexa, Lexapro, and Prozac among others. Antidepressant Studies Exaggerate Their Effectiveness
2008-01-19 04:08:00
Antidepressants like Effexor, Zoloft, Wellbutrin and Paxil, may not be as effective in treating symptoms of depression as once thought. That’s because studies done on many popular antidepressants have been skewed in a way that exaggerates their effectiveness. In many cases, only research that casts antidepressants in a favorable light is published. Meanwhile, studies with less-than-favorable results are often mothballed by the pharmaceutical companies that make antidepressants. ...

One Third Of Antidepressant Studies Never Published
2008-01-18 15:06:00
A new study—"the most thorough to date," writes the New York Times—shows that about a third of the studies for some of the market's most successful antidepressants (Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor) were never published because they didn't have favorable results. "While 94 percent of the positive studies found their way into print, just 14 percent of those with disappointing or uncertain results did." The implication is that the makers of these drugs intentionally misled consumers and the federal government on their effectiveness. ...

Wyeth's regulatory mishaps have led analysts to slash peak annual revenue estimates for the drugs to less than half the $6 billion forecast by the Madison, New Jersey-based company in 2006. None of 24 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg rate the company a sell even though Wyeth also may face generic competition this year to its most-popular drug, the antidepressant Effexor, driving earnings down further. Protonix and Effexor generated a combined $5.5 billion in 2006. ...
