| Dubai and China Sign MoU to Promote Jewelry and Diamond Trades |

The Dubai Multi Commodities Center (DMCC) and GAC (the Gems and Jewelry Trade Association of China) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for increased mutual cooperation to facilitate the growth of diamond and jewelry trade between both countries. Under the agreement, DMCC has undertaken to actively promote Chinese jewelry to its member companies. In return, the GAC will support the Dubai jewelry market by helping to establish a stronger presence in that country. Both organizations will exchange expertise in diamond jewelry design, training, business opportunities, and educational initiatives. The memorandum of understanding will also enable Chinese jewelry manufacturers to link up with Dubai as a hub to sell their products to a wider Middle Eastern audience.

A bracelet and a pair of earrings have been found in Hampton overnight and will be returned to the Newton family.The wife of TV personality Bert Newton was at Chadstone shopping centre on May 16 when her bag was snatched.Mrs Newton's bag was under the table where she and her daughter Lauren were having lunch.It contained jewellery - which police say was of substantial value - and cash.

Net profits from Namibia's largest diamond producer, Namdeb, a subsidiary of DeBeers, dipped almost by half last year despite slight increase in production, the company said on Friday."Net profits for the year 2007 came to 143 million Namibian dollars (18.4 million US dollars) compared to 305 million Namibian dollars (39.3 million US dollars) in 2006," Namdeb, jointly owned by the Namibian government and the DeBeers, said in a newspaper advertisement.Diamond production in 2007 was 2,176 carats, four percent up from 2,085 carats the previous year, with half of the diamonds found on land and from marine mining in the Atlantic Ocean.

Diamonds may not be high on the agenda, but the India-Africa Forum Summit, a government-to-government initiative being held in New Delhi from April 7-9, is widely expected to foster a political and business environment to help build direct relationships between diamond mining countries in Africa and the sizable diamond manufacturing industry in India. Union Diamond Corp., founded in 2001, has grown from a one-man operation to 18 employees selling diamonds, pre-made and custom jewelry and watches through its Web site (www.uniondiamond.com). The company also has a showroom on Paces Ferry Road in Vinings, but 98 percent of its sales are online, says Scott Anderson, president and CEO.Union Diamond had three record sales of $250,000 last year, Anderson said. Some frequent customers are getting close to the million-dollar mark for combined spending, he said.
