Oh How I Love Granola
2008-07-19 07:14:00
Granola is quickly becoming one of my favorite things. I have it at all times of the day and night. Sometimes, when I need something sweet, or salty...it takes care of both. I stopped buying granola bars about 2 months ago though. I now make my own. It’s easy breezy and because I love it so much, I am going to share my secret recipe with all of you. Hope you enjoy. ******************************* Queenie’s Granola Bars - that she learned to make from Alton Brown. Heh. 8 ounces old-fashioned rolled oats, about 2 cups 1 1/2 ounces raw sunflower seeds, about 1/2 cup 3 ounces sliced almonds, about 1 cup 1 1/2 ounces wheat germ, about 1/2 cup 6 ounces honey, about 1/2 cup 1 3/4 ounces dark brown sugar, about 1/4 cup packed 1-ounce unsalted butter, plus extra for pan 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 6 1/2 ounces chopped dried fruit, any combination of apricots, cherries or blueberries. My favorite is with dried apple. I also add just a smidge ...

The Yolk on Eggs
2008-07-17 06:39:01
As I sat this morning, eating my eggs (yes, I do still eat them on occasion), it got me thinking....How bad are these things for me? There have been some recent studies that have shown eggs to be a viable part of weight loss success in women. There have also been studies that have shown that you should eat the yolks. Some showing that you shouldn’t. It all leaves a Queenie quite confused about eggs. Did you know that most of an egg’s nutrients are found in the yolk? Take a look at the comparison below to see what you may be missing:   Egg WhiteEgg Yolk Calories 17 59 Fat (g) .06 4.51 Saturated Fat (g) 0 1.6 Carbs (g) .24 .61 Protein (g) 3.6 2.7 Cholesterol (mg) 0 210 Sodium (mg) 55 8 Calcium (mg) 2.3 21.9 Vitamin D (IU) 0 18 Folate (mcg) 1.3 24.8 My opinion is that you should consider keep...

The Third Installment From Habits of Health
2008-07-16 08:04:00
Today is the third installment from Dr. Wayne Andersenthat he was so kind as to write for us.  It is regarding his book Habits of Health.  Again, we’re not pushing the book - we’re giving you an option if you like what he has to say Explain your diversified eating plan and how it makes eating a pleasure Our rushed lifestyle and way of life in general can often make eating healthy an inconvenience and difficult.  My upcoming book Habits of Health will give you the tools you need to make healthy eating easy and enjoyable.  I want to give you diversity, so you the foods you eat compliment and satisfy your taste. This is what Habits of Health is designed to do. Processed food is not only unhealthy, but also overwhelming to the body.  Aside from that, processed foods have very few intrinsic flavors.  The flavors found in processed goods are loaded with extra salts and extra sugars. My diversified eating plan is designed to provide a full...

Square One
2008-07-15 05:01:00
I am finding myself back at square one. Not literally waaaaay back to the beginning but....umm..I didn’t weigh in on Friday for a reason. I spent all of last week nursing an injury that kept me from working out. I was pissy and whiny because I got slowed down by said injury and well, that lovely poundage dump that I made two weeks ago....yeah um...I ate it back in my friend’s birthday cake and ice cream...and potato chips...and really, anything else that I could find because I was a depressed pile of yuck. Please note: I am not suffering from depression. I do eat when I am emotional though.  I have gone through a few stages this past week. At first, I was in the pissed at the world stage. I mean, why did that bakery have to make such a delicious piece of birthday heaven anyway? Buttheads. Then, I went through the whole “pissed off at myself” stage. Where I cried and then ranted and raved like a lunatic, trying to reason with my dogs about why I just need...

Fat Camps Back in Style
2008-07-14 08:00:00
When you think of “fat camps” you mostly think of lots of overweight teens getting off a bus in the middle of a forest where they learn how to exercise, eat right, and socialize with their peers.  But not so anymore.  Now fat camps for adults are all the rage.  It is most likely due to NBC’s Biggest Loser that people are more apt to go and search for adult fat camps that give them a “Biggest Loser” atmosphere minus the television cameras and of course minus the $250,000.  Now called “Adult Weight Loss Camps” as the politically correct term suggests, it is a place where adults get together to find weight loss solutions that last them long into their life.  Typically, a weight loss camp setting features a low calorie diet and a fitness or exercise program. The so-called fat farm, fat camp and weight loss boot camp programs up until now failed to address fundamental behavioral and emotional issues, including body ima...

The Power of Thinking
2008-07-12 05:13:00
I am reading a book right now that talks about how powerful your mind is. Well, Duh? Right? But what this book is suggesting is that your mind can in fact make things manifest in your life. It is stretching beyond positive thinking. It is actually suggesting that with your mind and essentially your thoughts, you can in fact make yourself ill or healthy. The point the author brings up are the various illnesses that people have that are psychosomatic. In other words, what your mind thinks, your body makes happen. Think about people that you know that are hypochondriacs. They have every disease and illness on the planet right? Have they really been exposed to all of that stuff? Not likely. Well, this book has me thinking. If we can create health, why can’t we create weight loss? I mean, the biggest struggles that we have with losing weight are the emotional ties that we all have to food and our self image. Right? This whole concept brings to light several things for me. First o...

The Importance of Stretching
2008-07-10 06:15:00
This week, I am reminded of the importance of a simple act that I SHOULD do everyday - yet I don’t. Stretching. I stretch each day before Tae Kwon Do, but I don’t stretch any other time. For the past week, I have been nursing a messed up foot/ankle injury due to, I am embarrassed to admit, my lack of stretching. I have managed to pull muscles that I didn’t know existed and as a result, I have been sidelined for DAYS. So, I am writing to you all here to implore you to stretch. Even when you aren’t going to work out. Here is some interesting info that I found while trying to find a way to recover from this stupid injury: Muscles tend to shorten and weaken with age. Shorter, stiffer muscle fibers make you vulnerable to injuries, back pain, and stress. Moreover, the lubricating secretions that kept muscles moving efficiently in your youth dry up as the years go by. But regularly performing exercises that isolate and stretch the elastic fibers surrounding your ...

Debunking One Myth at a Time
2008-07-09 09:39:00
We’ve had such a good conversation lately about theories with weight loss and how we all feel about them, so I thought I would continue this with one particular myth that always had me questioning it.  Myth #1: Always eat breakfast Fact: Before you immediately sit up and say “What??” “We don’t have to eat breakfast?” Yes, you do have to eat breakfast - that part of the myth is actually true - but here’s something you might not have known.  You don’t have to eat first thing when you wake up… you only have to eat some time during the morning.  If you wake up at 7 a.m., you don’t have to immediately eat a big breakfast. You’re probably not even hungry right after you wake up - I know I’m not!. You don’t have to jump start your metabolism right away, but you do have to do it relatively soon but not nearly as soon as they make you think you do. You simply have to structure your eating throughout the day...

Is it right …or is it wrong?
2008-07-08 09:25:00
Today’s post is my response to a comment that Bethany wrote yesterday. She raised some very valid points about vegetarianism that I want to address here. I also know that a few have emailed me directly to ask questions that I have yet to answer in a post because I get distracted so damn easily. I still have the emails and do fully intend on writing up posts about them. Really, I do. First, you all need to understand that I am new to this whole not eating meat thing. January of 08 to be exact. Secondly, I gave up meat and animal products because I didn’t want to put that stuff in my bod anymore. I call it crap, junk, garbage and any other word that makes it not sound appealing in any way. That is because I still crave it. I still recall how yummy it tasted and if I didn’t ...

Here’s What I think…
2008-07-07 09:05:00
So I’ve been really thinking about this weight loss thing.  I am a person that does her research - not only do I pass it on to you, but I read it for myself as well.  Lately I’ve been very angry at “them"… you know - THEM.  The people who tell us all this stuff that we should believe.  “They” come up with new ways to lose weight, new theories on why we lose weight, and basically tell us what we need to do to lose weight.  So, I’ve been thinking about certain things that people tell us.  I’ve come up with some theories of my own on what “they” say… I know that they say if we drink a lot of water we will lose weight.  3+ years ago I gave up soda forever (well besides a slip or two) and I drink 7 to 8 bottles per day which equates to over a gallon.  So, I drink a GALLON of water a day and have gained weight.  I’m not sure if I’m believing the water thing in certain ...

Guest Post by Dr. Andersen
2008-07-05 04:24:01
Here is the 2nd in a guest series post by Dr. Wayne Andersen as he talks about his habits of health.  It’s a good one! No exercise for the first three weeks of the program?  Huh?  Yes it is true. In my upcoming book, “Habits of Health,” there is no exercise program for the first three weeks of the program. Why?  Because most people fall into two groups: those who exercise and those who don’t.  If a person has not been exercising regularly, we first want to get them to a healthy weight.  Once they are down to a healthy weight, they will then be able to burn fat at a more efficient rate.  It is important to keep in mind that if you have not been exercising and then you are too active too quick, you could hurt yourself… this is the last thing we want.  The main focus is to lose weight, to consume just enough calories to support your activity level, achieve a great fat burning state, then settle into a conducive exercise routine....

Well, I Had Good Intentions
2008-07-03 08:39:00
I really did. I had this nice post in my head that I was going to write. Something about grilling ideas since tomorrow is like the biggest BBQue day on the planet. But then...I stepped on my scale. I haven’t been on my scale in a week. That was a hard thing for me. Normally, I get out of bed, go take care of pee pee business and then hop on the scale. This week, I said that I wasn’t going to do that. I just wanted to relax about the yoyo thing. Ummm I am down to 166. I have no idea how it happened. I was 170 again last week. 4 pounds - GONE???? Really? How did this happen? It’s like a scientific anomaly. Tomorrow is normally weigh in here. It is also 4th of July. A day of picnics, fireworks and apple pie. I propose a day off. For everyone. If you would like to weigh in today, great. Feel free to do so. If you want to relax and take the day off, I am all for that too. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.  ...

Ugh - The Eating Continues
2008-07-02 02:08:00
Honestly, I don’t know what the heck is wrong with me.  I’ve been eating like a pig… just 2 weeks ago I was rejoicing in dropping 12 pounds almost and tonight I was laying on my couch eating an entire tub of spice drops - a TUB I say… you know the ones that have like 1000 spice drops in it?  Yep, ate it.  My neighbor gave it to me as a little token of appreciation for helping her out with her computer.  Some token :( I haven’t eaten sugar and I can’t tell you how long and I figured I’d just have a few, but I didn’t stop till there was like only 20 left and THEN I put it away.  Not when there were like 200 left, nope, just 20.  This was after I ate doritos which I bought at the grocery store after a moment of weakness.  It is the classic case of deprivation.  I deprived myself for so long and then I just went nuts.  I’ve been really stressed lately and food has certainly become my comf...

The Killer Tomatoes
2008-06-28 18:49:00
My great state was put on the list of states that have been affected by the recent salmonella outbreak. We weren’t just put on the list once...but twice. They had Florida on the list, then took us off the list only to turn around a day later and put us right back on the list. I did not worry about this outbreak for my family though. Because the tomatoes that we use are vine ripes. They weren’t on the list of potentially damning fruits. This did make me think about my choices for fruits and veggies. And it also made me look into some options for being able to avoid worries like Salmonella in the future. The most simple solution would be to grow your own. Now, I know that many of you probably just rolled your eyes and groaned really loud. Didn’t you? I am here to tell you that it’s not that hard. Several veggies and fruits can be grown in pots right on your patio or in a back corner of your yard. No matter where you live. All you need are some deep containers a...

The Health Benefits of Cantaloupe
2008-06-23 07:58:00
There is no doubt about it - I love me some cantaloupe There is nothing better than digging into a nice juicy cantaloupe that is perfectly ripe.  In fact, I was just eating some!  Which brings me to this post.  I know cantaloupe is good for me, but I didn’t realize how good until I did a little research.  First of all, I had no idea that the cantaloupe is also called a muskmelon, mostly because of the musky aroma that it gives off when it is ripe.  I’m not sure that I ever smelled a cantaloupe and thought - wow, that’s musky!  But to each his own I guess.  It belongs to the “Cucurbitaceae” family with popular veggies as cucumbers, pumpkins and gourds.  It is a very sweet fruit that when ripe is very soft and full of flavor.  It is in season now and lasts through the beginning of September.  I picked up a whole bunch at the farmer’s market this weekend and OMG are they good!  Here is what I f...

Write it Down
2008-06-21 08:15:00
I have read about several diet programs since I began my health journey in October of 2007. The one consistent with almost every single plan is that they encourage the use of a food journal. A simple place that you write down EVERY. SINGLE. THING. THAT. YOU. PUT. IN. YOUR. MOUTH.  It seems tedious. Really. I mean, does that stick of gum really need to be recorded? Its only what? 50 calories? Well, I am going to use myself as an example here. I am an avid gum chewer. Beyond the normal consumption. I don’t smoke but I chew gum like someone that is trying to quit. I would say, realistically, I chew probably an average of 3 pieces per day. 3 pieces per day at 50 calories each piece is 150 calories per day. 150 calories per day for one week = 1050 calories per week. That my folks is almost an entires DAYS worth of calories. So I will point out that yes, in fact that 50 calorie stick of gum totally needs to be written down. Several things can be accomplished with a food journal...

Is it Burn Out or a Really Big Wall?
2008-06-19 06:54:00
No matter what it is...I am fricken tired of it. It’s frustrating and pissing me off to no end. I hit 168. I am thrilled to be there. Really I am but I have been here for three weeks....AGAIN! And it sucks. I am determined to get past this wall though. In my hunting for my own “cure”, I found some fun stuff for you all. First off, recognize that you have indeed lost some weight. Say you weigh 162 pounds and eat 1,900 calories a day. To lose a pound a week, you’ve got to cut between 500 and 600 calories per day. So you restrict yourself to 1,400 calories, and the weight comes off. But suddenly, after a few weeks, the scale refuses to budge. This is because with the weight loss, your basal metabolic rate has also declined, and where your body used to burn 1,368 calories per day, now it’s using only 1,080. At this weight, there’s less of you to move around, so you burn fewer calories working out. What this means for the newer you is that you are now ...

Friends and Weight Loss
2008-06-18 08:34:01
Yesterday I watched a repeat of Rachael Ray about a woman who had gastric bypass surgery, lost 200 or so pounds and in the meantime lost all of her friends and family.  It may sound far fetched but as I was researching it I found that it is actually quite common.  I remember when I was on phen-fen way way way back when and I lost 80 pounds, I indeed lost my friends.  Most people just assume that when they lose weight that everything will be better, whereas it probably isn’t going to be the case.  The fact is, when you lose weight you are changing.  Most of the time when you lose a lot of weight it is a MAJOR change.  As they pointed out on RR - consider this… you get married - you lose friends… you have a baby - you lose friends… you start a new job - you lose friends.  It may be because as you change and grow, they simply don’t.  Or it could be as simple as you just don’t have time to see the other person a...

It’s All About the Choices
2008-06-17 06:55:00
So I am setting on my couch last night, after TKD class. I am glued to the TV. Yes, I know, being a couch potato but still...I JUST exercised. It was chill time. There is but one good thing that comes from this “chill time” for me. My brain gets to relax. Last night, it only happened for a second though because I saw a thought provoking commercial on the tube. It was the latest Subway commercial. I tried to find it so that you all could watch it. No luck. Here is the verbal Queenie version: There is a guy, in line at a fast food place. Obviously a burger joint. He turns around to the camera and is asked “Do you know what you get with a value meal?” To which he gets told that he not only gets a huge burger, a mondo order of fries and a gigantic soda...but he also gets elastic waisted pants, a stack of diet books, an unused gym membership and eventually a therapist to help him work through it all. I laughed. Mainly because all of what they said was true and it ...

Bread 101
2008-06-16 08:14:00
As I sit here eating my bagel I have to contemplate my love of bread.  I do indeed love bread - no question about it.  Rye, pumpernickel, Italian, heck I even love Texas Toast.  The only kind of bread I don’t love is Whole Grain - exactly the type I should be eating.  So I went on a search to see what I can find out about the other types of breads I eat, how healthy they are and what specifically I should be looking for when I grab a loaf off the shelf.  There are so many types that it would literally take me hours to list them all, so instead I’ll go with the important varieties.  White and Whole Grain Bread Whole grain is a basic form but by grinding the grains, adding water and heating it up you get whole grain flatbread.  Whole grain bread is similar to flatbread except you add yeast to make it rise.  White bread starts out the same way but instead of adding “whole” grain the grain is processed.  The hard out...

Happy Friday the 13th
2008-06-13 08:57:00
Today is Friday the 13th. Superstitious day for some. Not for me. I wasn’t even scared to get on the scale. That has to do with the way I have been feeling lately. I got the skinny happening. I just FEEL it. This week has been part of a LONG series of weeks for me too. Just lots of stressful things. This week, the only working out I did was my TKD classes twice and then the mattress rumba with my gorgeously wonderful hub. Heh. I ate like a horse too for the most part. But...I still felt thin. Kind of strange huh? I spent this week setting on my butt more than not. I was cleaning out my family room/office. Weeding through the bazillion files on my laptop. Including photos. I also had to get things ready for a contest that is starting tomorrow on a certain web site - which lead me back through posts that I had written MONTHS ago. Posts where I had posted my weight. Each week. So this week, I didn’t care what the scale said. I saw the results of my diligence. I saw how fat ...

Making YOU matter
2008-06-12 05:02:00
Sometimes, trying to be healthy is hard work. Especially when your family isn’t behind your efforts. By the grace of all things wonderful, I don’t have that issue. I have full support. But I know that most of you are on your own. To me, that sucks. You are busting your butt to improve yourself. It’s not an easy task. You need to put yourself first. Especially when it comes to your health. So if your family is balking, what can you do? I know for me personally, the worst time of day was meals. I could find plenty of time to exercise, but meals were a headache. I had to find a way to prepare food that everyone would eat happily and that would keep me on track. A woman that was converting to being a vegetarian....can I just say. AGGGHH! Most of the time, I felt like this needed to be done with a wand and magician’s cape rather than a wooden spoon and a frying pan. Now, I shared with you, my trick for planning your meals. Today, I am going to share another tri...

Tips For Exercising In Hot Weather
2008-06-11 10:14:00
As you may already be aware of, most of the country is going through a serious heat wave.  For 4 days at least it has been 100 or more here in North Carolina just as it has been in other parts as well.  Today we’re having a cool down at 92!  Considering it is so hot I figured I’d remind you all how important it is to take precautions when exercising outside.  For those of you who enjoy walking outside, or biking, you need to be particularly careful about heat exhaustion.  It really doesn’t matter where you live either - since even where I used to live in MA and RI it got up to 96 yesterday (which is practically unheard of this early in the season!) You CAN still exercise outside, but you just need to be careful.  Here are some important tips to remember: Drink up before you’re thirsty. Once you start craving water, you’re already 3 percent dehydrated. To avoid that, drink two to three cups a few hours before you work out. T...

Supplements - Are they for you?
2008-06-10 05:39:00
We are all exposed to the lovely world of health and weight loss. We can’t fight it. Getting fit is sooo 2008. Right? Well, what we may not know, is whether or not diet supplements are safe, effective or right for you. Hopefully, today, you will be able to answer some of those questions. Please keep in mind as you read that the information provided here is based on these items as a supplement to your diet, not just a general consumption. I drink green tea but I don’t use it as a replacement for a meal. It is my beverage of choice. Caffeine is claimed to decrease appetite and raise your metabolic rate. There is currently no scientific evidence that caffeine is effective as a weight loss supplement though. Only that is stimulates your bod. Hmmmm....And there are some side effects. As a stimulant, caffeine can temporarily cause mild tremors, agitation, and insomnia and it amplifies the effects of other stimulants. Chromium picolinateis claimed to reduce body fat, increase m...

Portion Control
2008-06-09 05:04:00
I know I have talked about portion control, but I’m going to talk about it again in depth… Why?  Because it is one of the most important aspects of losing weight.  I got on my scale this morning again - and yes, I realize that it is only 3 days after I got on last time - but I have been feeling great lately… I’ve been doing everything right, I walked Friday, Saturday, and today.  Before that though I’ve been working on my portion control - and I mean seriously working on it.  And it’s paying off in a huge way!  I lost another 2.8 pounds since I weighed myself on Thursday.  That seems excessive and it is - but you have to remember, I am a lot larger than most of you skinny minnies out there, LOL.  I’ll give you the big number on Friday (because I have 4 more days to lose more) but let me tell you - I’ve dropped 8.2 pounds now since my weigh in a couple of weeks ago.  All because of portion control...

Queenie and the Bean Sprouts
2008-06-07 09:56:00
See Queenie’s sprouter. See Queenie’s sprouter grow delicious fresh sprouts. See Queenie happy and healthy.  This is my sprouter. I purchased it for 19 dollars on Amazon. I had no idea at the time, how addicting this nice little appliance was going to be for me. Otherwise, I would have purchased 2 or 3 of them. This handy little gadget grows me three different types of sprouts, fresh in my kitchen in only 4 days. I love my sprouter almost as much as I love sprouts. Beneficial little things too. They are a famous health food. But they are also getting some good press as being disease fighters too. Sprouts contain plant compounds that can help protect us against diseases. Alfalfa sprouts have an amino acid in them that has shown to protect against pancreatic, colon and leukemia cancers. Plant estrogens increase bone formation and density and prevent osteoporosis. They are also helpful in controlling hot flashes, menopause, PMS and fibrocystic breasts tumors. Al...

Weigh In Friday!
2008-06-06 03:38:00
Quite frankly, lately I have been up and down about weighing in but this week I kicked some ass!  I lost 3.4 pounds I could have even lost more by now because I weighed in early, because you know, I just felt… lighter, lol.  I wish I could say that it was all that exercise but nope - it was better food choices.  I really made a very conscious effort to watch everything I ate.  I worked very hard at my portion control and not snacking mindlessly.  I did walk 2 days but it wasn’t anything to write home about… about 30 minutes each time.  But I felt good that I made that effort as well as constantly checking my food intake.  I ate home this week all except one day which I’m sure made a huge difference as well.  My water intake is something to be desired though - normally I’m a 6 bottle a day water drinker but I admit to doing something I haven’t done regularly in 3 years plus… I bought a bottle of soda ...

An Angel in our Midst
2008-06-05 05:45:00
Fellow Wicked People - We have an angel among us. His name is Eric Gamble. He wrote to Erin and I with a request for some help. After reading his email, and then scoping out his web site, we decided that he deserved a coveted spot here in our wicked playground. You see, Eric is on a weight loss journey. Not only that, he is going to make it a personal challenge. And you all know how much Erin and I love challenges, right? So here is the deal: Eric is trying to lose 25 pounds in 14 weeks. He wants people to donate 1 dollar per pound which he is going to donate to a great charity - Angel’s Place. Angel’s Place is a charity that offers help and support to children with terminal illnesses and their families. You can read more about this great charity here. Since Wicked Weighs is all about health and weight loss and Erin and I love to help people, we are going to keep his cute little banner up until his challenge is over on August 20th. Not only that, we are pledging ...

Hydroxycut - The Real Story
2008-06-04 03:02:00
Jasmine wrote in a comment that she was now using Hydroxycut and she then said that before we put her down because of it (which we totally never would - we’ve all done our own types of diets!!) that we review it and see what it is all about.  So I did just that This is what I have come up with… The answer to the question if hydroxycut is effective is difficult without taking a look at its ingredients to see if it is comprised of effective fat burners.  Perhaps you are aware that hydroxycut has undergone a recent major change in it formulation. This is because it used to contain ephedra (along with other ingredients).  Ephedra has been banned by the FDA. And, therefore, the makers of hydroxycut had to revise the product’s formula. Here are some of the key ingredients in the new formula that are very promising: green tea leaf extract guarana extract Both of thesee will help boost the body’s metabolism and help burn fat.  Caffeine is...

The Fruit, The Veggies - The Legend
2008-06-03 05:29:00
Gypsie recently posted that she wanted to know why I became a vegetarian. I really don’t recall if I posted the WHY’S about this topic before, I only recall posting that this is what I am doing. This is going to be a long one people. I apologize. Back in October (2007) I weighed 207 pounds. I felt like total crap ALL THE TIME. I was suffering from panic attacks and had MAJOR issues with low blood sugar. In my family, there was heart disease, diabetes, and cancer running rampant. I was scared. I had tried every diet on the planet - except the grapefruit diet because I can’t stand grapefruit. But everything else, been there, done that. I had watched my friends do the yoyo thing on Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig for years. I knew there had to be a way to “fix” myself and get my life back. In waltzes Wicked Weighs. Yep. This place. I came in here to read a post that Erin had written about Weight Watchers. Then found Jasmine’s post about a lovely l...

I Swear I’m Here!
2008-06-02 11:05:00
Sorry for the late Monday post and skipping the Saturday post!  I feel like my life has all been a whirlwind lately.  So much to do, so very little time!  I spent Saturday afternoon doing exactly what Queenie suggested - I made my full month of June meals.  I was down 4 days because I’m going to Michigan this weekend but I was able to come up with enough meals for all the rest of my dinners with the exception of one per week - I alloted myself one night of going out to dinner per week and one day for lunch.  I didn’t go nuts on my lunch plans because quite frankly I am much more of a sandwich and veggie/fruit girl then I am to actually get my ass off the computer to make myself chicken salad or something.  I think this will only work for me and for the rest of you if you are realistic about what you put out for meals.  I know that I’m not going to make a dinner every night so I had to account for antipasto night with light turkey ...

Planning and Clutter
2008-05-31 06:53:23
I am almost embarrassed to admit this but...I am a bit anal. Oh, who am I kidding. I am a lot anal. I have lists for everything and a planner that tells me when i can pee. Yes. PATHETIC. The one thing that I do that I want to share with you all is my menu planning. Organization is key to so many things in life. Especially when life is moving at such a fast pace. The one thing that I organize is our family menu. I literally am lost if I don’t have this. I print out a free monthly calendar from http://www.printfree.com and then set down at the beginning of each month and fill that sucker in with all of the dinners for my family. Yep. Seems a bit odd but it keeps me from doing a lot of stupid stuff. Menu planning will make sure that you: never ever wander around the grocery store and impulse shop. This saves money, time and a whole lot of calories. don’t become a binge take out person. You don’t default to take out or order in’s when you plan ahead. can ...

Well, It’s Friday
2008-05-30 11:59:00
You all know what that means. Weigh in. The past few weeks, I have been dreading Fridays. Mainly because my scale has just been teetering back and forth between 170 and 169. It’s been torturing me. BADLY.  Well, after a few days of pondering my self worth and my ability to actually not give up on this life I have going for myself, I made some realizations. Quite simply, I just need to stop making excuses for myself. When things get hard for me, I turn to food. I am an emotional eater. That hasn’t changed just because I cleaned up my diet. I still get all wimpy and head for my fridge. It’s a habit that I have had for 30+ years. I can’t imagine that it’s just going to go away. Well, the past few weeks, I have slipped back to the self doubtful, wimpy gal that I used to be. Only I didn’t reach for Pepsi this time. I just have been eating non fricken stop. Not good when you are trying to make that scale move south. Ya know? I am in the process ...

When I have lost more than an ounce, could you please try to wake up earlier so that I can weigh in and be all excited with myself??? Please.  ...

A New Approach
2008-05-29 05:24:01
When this site first began, I think that Erin planned for it to be a site that housed a bunch of information about weight loss. A place for people to come, to be filled with anything they needed to attack dieting and weight loss effectively. I think that it has accomplished that. At some point though, our focus, as readers, is changing. We are not ALL on that scale frenzied weight loss journey anymore. Some of us are. But some of us are just wanting health information. At some point, the focus has to change a bit. I don’t want to mislead anyone. I am still trying to drop my last 20 pounds. But somewhere along my journey, I realized that I needed to make life changes and long time commitments in order to make that happen and I don’t need the numbers from my scale every single day to keep me heading in the right direction. I have said it a million times, but here it comes again: If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you can’t diet. Dieting is a temporary fix to...

Get To Walking!
2008-05-28 08:03:05
Walking is not just about getting on the treadmill, putting on your iPod and struggling through 30 to 60 minutes of walking in the same place, looking at the same things you have done for the past few months.  Firing up your imagination means you can find plenty of places other than on the treadmill or in the neighborhood park, to get in 30 minutes of walking to help you stay fit. Besides, a change of scenery may do you good. Here are some places you may have never thoughts about to get your next walk in: • Museum. Stroll through the galleries for plenty of visual stimulation. Here’s a plan: pass first through all the galleries and climb the steps or walk for a half-hour, then go back and revisit the art that caught your attention the first time through. • Ballpark. Take in America’s pastime, but get out of your seat at the baseball game and walk around the stadium. Big-league stadiums are plenty large for a good, brisk walk, and many minor-league parks aren’t so...

Kickin’ the Habits
2008-05-27 10:34:00
Today, at Wicked Weighs, it is officially “Kick it to the Curb” day. I declared it. So it is. We are using today, this mere 24 hours to kick an unhealthy thing from our lives. It can be anything you wish. Just commit and kick it - for 24 hours. Today, I am kicking diary out of my life. Yep. I am a cheese addict. That is the one thing that I have been unwilling to give up completely. Even though I know how horrible it is for me. I think I love cheese even more than Jasmine does. That is HUGE. I have read countless things about how it is full of saturated fat, calories and other yuckie stuff etc. yet I refuse to give it up. I don’t even have a moment of guilt when I eat it either. I just ignore the things that I know about it and go to town. Well, today, I am ridding myself of it. Completely. So what are you guys giving up today? Post it here and let us know. ...

Time For Reflection
2008-05-26 03:45:00
We interrupt this regularly scheduled program to talk to you about what today really means… Today we are going to go over the houses of our friends and family or maybe even just stay home while we fill up on hot dogs, hamburgers, and potato salad.  While we are enjoying this great day that we have come to love so much, let’s not forget all the women and men who have fought and are still fighting for our country.  We have lost 4082 since the war began and the numbers just seem to get higher and higher with each passing day.  These are fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters - and while we’re out having fun we need to take a moment to think about them and why we really should be celebrating Memorial Day.  It is a day to remember the people who have given their lives to keep our country safe.  By all means, enjoy your day… and don’t eat too much!  Weigh-in day is only 4 days away ...

It’s not the smokeout
2008-05-24 07:55:00
Each year, hundreds of thousands of people participate in the great American smoke out. It is one day each year that smokers commit to snubbing the habit. Well, if they can do it, so can we. Right? I am not talking about smoking though. I am talking about just kicking one of your bad habits for one day. Maybe you are a soda drinker. You know it’s bad for you, but you consume away. Perhaps, you are trying to kick the red meat addiction you have. Chocolate. Sweets in general. I am officially declaring Tuesday May 27th as “Kick it to the Curb” day. That’s right. One day, that all of us here at Wicked Weighs are going to give up something that we know is bad for us. It can be anything you want. The worse it is for your health, the better. Think about what you are going to give up for that 24 hour period. Come back here on Tuesday and post it in the comments. If we all give up one bad thing just for one day, think how much healthier we may be in the end? One da...
