Overmedication, Medical Errors and Medical System!Ramona Lamascola thought she was losing her 88-year-old mother to dementia. Instead, she was losing her to overmedication. The use of antipsychotic drugs to tamp down the agitation, combative behavior and outbursts of dementia patients has soared, especially in the elderly. Part of this increase can be traced to prescriptions in nursing homes. As with any medication, the prescribing of a medication is up to a physician. Many doctors say misuse of the drugs is widespread. And there's a lot of abuse going on in a lot of these places. Many physicians are absent without leave in the nursing home and don't take an active role in the assessment of the patient. Our health care system isn't set up to address the ...

Body Energy Systems and CFS/Fibromyalgia
2008-06-22 03:51:00
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFS/Fibromyalgia Patients and Body's Internal Ecology! The job of mitochondria is to get the energy contained inside foods (sugars and fats) and convert it into a form the body can use. The NAD and ATP molecules are the 'currency' of energy in the body. Almost all energy requiring processes in the body have to be paid for with NAD and ATP, but largely ATP. The reserves of ATP in cells are very small. If the cell is not very efficient at re-cycling ATP, then the cell runs out of energy very quickly and this causes the symptoms of weakness and poor stamina. Energy is produced when ATP (three phosphates) is converted into ADP (two phosphates). ADP is then re-cycled back through mitochondria to create m...

RSS CrossRef Search and visit Healthlines: Inflammation. Share us your Thoughts! Thanks to the scientific detective work of Kevin Tracey, MD, it turns out that the brain talks directly to the immune system, sending commands that control the body’s inflammatory response to infection and autoimmune diseases. Understanding the intimate relationship is leading to a novel way to treat diseases triggered by a dangerous inflammatory response. Stimulation of the vagus nerve could block a rogue inflammatory response and treat a number of diseases, including life-threatening sepsis. The vagus nerve speaks directly to the immune system through a neurochemical called acetylcholine. The inflammatory network: vagus stimulation as a way to shut off abnormal immune system responses. For years stress has been suspected of increasing susceptibility to various infectious diseases or cancer. Now evidence is mounting that the immune system and the nervous system may be inextricably interconnected. The brain may directly influence the immune system by sending messages down nerve cells. Networks of nerve fibers have been found that connect to the thymus gland, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone marrow. Moreover, experiments show that immune function can be altered by actions that destroy specific brain areas.Inflammation is a vital immune response to infection, injury or irritation. It is the basis of humanity's earliest survival. What do paper cuts, spicy foods, stubbed toes and intense workouts at the gym have to do with your odds of getting colon cancer, drifting into Alzheimer's or succumbing to a heart attack? The wound healing process can be applied to both acute and chronic wounds. Common chronic wounds include the diabetic foot ulcer, the decubitus ulcer and the venous stasis ulcer. The decubitus ulcer is a result of prolonged, unrelieved pressure over a bony prominence that leads to ischemia. The wound tends to occur in patients who are unable to reposition themselves to off-load weight, such as paralyzed, unconscious, or severely debilitated persons. Treatment consists of pressure relief, surgical and enzymatic debridement, moist wound care, and control of the bacterial load. Topical applications of antimicrobials and PDGF may be used.Oleanolic acid could also speed up the healing of cuts and abrasions as well as easing the pain of ulcer sufferers.CrossRef Healthlines: Ulcers. Oleanolic acid could also speed up the healing of cuts and abrasions as well as easing the pain of ulcer sufferers. How oleanolic acid does the job is a mystery. Wound healing occurs in several stages and each stage is not well understood. Even so, he said that there was an important market for drugs that could speed recovery from wounds.Chronic wounds were defined as those expected to take more than 4 to 6 weeks to heal because of 1 or more factors delaying healing, including venous leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, extended burns, and amputation wounds. Acute wounds were defined as those expected to heal in the expected time frame, with no local or general factor delaying healing. Dressings for acute and chronic wounds are hydrogel dressings, synthetic foam dressings, hydrocolloid dressings, low adherence dressings and alginate dressings.Through carefully controlled experiments using advanced brain imaging techniques, researchers are discovering that people’s brains can process the same pain signals from their bodies very differently. These insights are leading to surprising new strategies for controlling pain. Doctors can prescribe several different medications and treatments for pain relief.Imagine an epidural or a shot of Novocain that doesn’t paralyze your legs or make you numb yet totally blocks your pain. This type of pain management is now within reach. As a result, childbirth, surgery, and trips to the dentist might be less traumatic in the future. The pint-sized subjects received injections near their sciatic nerves, which run down their hind limbs, and subsequently lost the ability to feel pain in their paws. The injections contained QX-314, a normally inactive derivative of the local anesthetic lidocaine, and capsaicin, the active ingredient in hot peppers. In combination, these chemicals targeted only pain-sensing neurons, preventing them from sending signals to the brain. CrossRef Healthlines: Pain. Can you think Pain away?.

Eating to much food is one of the main risk factors for cancer (pdf). This can be shown 2 ways: by the additional risk of malignancies caused by obesity and by the protective effect of eating less food.It has been estimated that 30–40 percent of all cancers can be prevented by lifestyle and dietary measures alone. Obesity, nutrient sparse foods such as concentrated sugars and refined flour products that contribute to impaired glucose metabolism (which leads to diabetes), low fiber intake, consumption of red meat, and imbalance of omega 3 and omega 6 fats all contribute to excess cancer risk.

Do you know your family's medical history? Do you know what health checks you are entitled to? If you answered 'no' to any of these questions you're not in the minority. Widespread use of a simple DIY test kit for bowel cancer could save thousands of lives a year, experts have said. The kit is being sent to men and women in their 60s throughout the UK as part of a national screening programme. I was very lucky that the screening test picked up on something that could have developed into a much worse situation. Cancer test may save many lives.Read more DIY-Test articles!.

Vettax, Fat tax and Food Awareness
2007-09-16 02:07:00
More than 3,000 fatal heart attacks and strokes could be prevented in the UK each year if VAT (BTW) was slapped on a vast range of foods, say Oxford researchers. A 17.5% rise on fatty, sugary or salty food would cut heart and stroke deaths by 1.7%, the study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health said. One of the researchers declared the time was right to debate a fat tax. Food quality is at an all time low. We should encourage an increase in awareness of the negative effects of white sugar, vegetable oils and refined flour. These are the cheaper foods. Taxing cheaper foods will place greater financial stress on lower income families. It would be better to reduce the price and availability of better quality, real, untouched, whole foods.

Improve peoples Health with 50 tips
2007-09-08 04:59:00
Finland's success story is all the more impressive for where it has pulled itself up from. In the 1970s Finland held the world record for heart disease. The dubious honour was the inevitable consequence of a Finnish culture that embraced just about every risk factor for heart disease there is. The idea then was that a good life was a sedentary life Look in the Finnish Mirror. Topping the league of death shocked the government into a full-blown campaign to dramatically improve peoples health. And it seems to have worked. The number of men dying from cardiovascular heart disease has dropped by at least 65%, with deaths from lung cancer being slashed by a similar margin. physical activity has risen!Health24 has done the legwork for you and here they are: the best health tips. Taking the time to read this tops the list. Learn to do stretching exercises when you wake up. It boosts circulation and digestion, and eases back pain. Many people don't know how to brush their teeth properly. Improper brushing can cause as much damage to the teeth and gums as not brushing at all. Lots of people don’t brush for long enough, don’t floss and don’t see a dentist regularly. Get your brain fizzing with energy. American researchers coined the term ‘neurobics’ for tasks which activate the brain's own biochemical pathways and to bring new pathways online that can help to strengthen or preserve brain circuits. Brush your teeth with your ‘other’ hand, take a new route to work or choose your clothes based on sense of touch rather than sight. People with mental agility tend to have lower rates of Alzheimer's disease and age-related mental decline. Improve peoples Health and read more health tips!

Health Check Care Management

Have you ever had a full-body health assessment? Do you know your family's medical history? Do you know what health checks you are entitled to? If you answered 'no' to any of these questions you're not in the minority. According to a new study carried out by private health insurer Pru Health, only 3 per cent of women in Scotland ever go for full-body health screenings. And despite speculation over the hereditary nature of many diseases, knowledge of medical histories is also poor, with only one in five women knowing whether a family member has had breast cancer.Widespread use of a simple DIY test kit for bowel cancer could save thousands of lives a year, experts have said. The kit is being sent to men and women in their 60s throughout the UK as part of a national screening programme. Cancer Research UK has calculated there would be up to 20,000 fewer deaths over the next 20 years if 60% of those who receive the test make use of it. I was very lucky that the screening test picked up on something that could have developed into a much worse situation. Cancer test may save many lives.
