Industrial Food Syndrome and Americans
2008-09-22 08:34:00
Are you suffering from IFS - Industrial Food Syndrome? What Americans eat is likely the biggest cause of us feeling sick, tired and stressed. I know quite a few people who fall under the following categories, in other words they feel like crap.Low energy, exhausted adrenals, cold hands or feetDigestive or elimination troublesDepressed, mood swings, brain fogWeight problemsWe all know that pills are not enough... They might be a catalyst, and provide nutrient reserves. And that's a good thing. But a daily real food plan you can stick to, will really take your body to the next level. Even though I take a whole food multivitamin I know if I eat junk the supplement alone will not work to give me good health. When I changed my diet and cut the industrial food my energy came back, I slept better ...

3 Poison Plants- Ivy, Oak and Sumac - Outsmart them...
2008-09-19 01:21:00
My family and I camp often and always have to watch out for poison ivy. Don't let these plants spoil your outdoor time. Outsmart them.First comes the itching, then a red rash, and then blisters. These symptoms of poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac can start from a few hours to several days after exposure to the plant oil found in the sap of these poisonous plants.Poison Ivy: Found throughout the United States except Alaska, Hawaii, and parts of the West Coast. Can grow as a vine or shrub. Each leaf has three glossy leaflets, with smooth or toothed edges. Leaves are reddish in spring, green in summer, and yellow, orange, or red in fall. May have white berries.Poison Oak: Grows as a low shrub in the eastern United States, and in tall clumps or long vines on Pacific Coast. Fuzzy green ...

Melamine Found in China Dairy Products
2008-09-18 10:37:00
Hong Kong has ordered the recall of a Chinese company's products after milk, ice cream and yoghurt were found to be contaminated with melamine, the compound responsible for killing four children in a China health scandal. Tainted milk powder produced in China has made thousands ill, and triggered sackings and detentions and rocked public trust already battered by a litany of food safety scares involving tainted eggs, pork and seafood in recent years. Now the scandal has spread to milk, ice-cream and yoghurt ice-bars. Hong Kong ordered the recall of a Chinese company's products on Thursday after tests found that eight of 30 of its products, including milk drinks, were tainted with melamine. The company, Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group Co Ltd, was a Beijing Olympic Games sponsor and is one of 22 Chinese firms implicated in the scandal. A regional Chinese health authority said on Thursday a fourth child had died at a hospital in remote northwestern Xinjiang. The report on the aut......

Pasture Perfect Book Giveaway
2008-09-18 00:16:00
I've spent the past year searching for help about eating right. I think I spent too much time watching the news and reading media based reports telling me eat this, not that. Lucky for me I've gotten acquainted with Dr. Heidi Dulay from Little Spa she's also the creator of this whole food multi that my family takes everyday (that I shamelessly promote.)Anyway, I want to share a book with one reader. It's written by Jo Robinson, titled Pasture Perfect. This book answered so many questions for me and opened my eyes to how animals live a miserable life in the feedlots. My 10-year-old son has read part of this book and told me we can never buy or eat that kind of meat again, we haven't! Pasture Perfect BookJo Robinson’s new book Pasture Perfect explains the far-reaching benefits of choosing ...

Why I Started Eating (and liking) Beef After 30 + Years...
2008-09-17 02:09:00
My experience with grass-fed beef surprised me. First, you should know that I've never been a meat eater, especially beef. It wasn't because I'm an animal lover, though I am, it wasn't any more than the fact that I didn't like the taste of beef. I would push the meat out of spaghetti or chili until I finally stopped putting it in all together. This post and here tells how I'm learning the benefit of real food and the importance of adding meat to my diet. I've been converted - I had my first grass-fed hamburger steak last night. It was delicious. Here's how I cooked it:Heated expeller coconut oil in a cast iron skillet.Cooked the frozen steak patty in the oil for about 5 minutes on each side. After the first turn I seasoned with Himalayan salt and organic black pepper. A few minutes before...

Mad Cow Disease In Genes Of Cattle - Research
2008-09-15 01:00:00
New findings about the causes of mad cow disease show that sometimes it may be genetic. "We now know it's also in the genes of cattle," said Juergen A. Richt, Regents Distinguished Professor of Diagnostic Medicine and Pathobiology at Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. (Source Kansas State University)Until several years ago, Richt said, it was thought that the cattle prion disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy -- also called BSE or mad cow disease -- was a foodborne disease. But his team's new findings suggest that mad cow disease also is caused by a genetic mutation within a gene called Prion Protein Gene. Prion proteins are proteins expressed abundantly in the brain and immune cells of mammals. The research shows, for the first time, that a 10-year-old cow from Al...

Buy Organic For Babies and Kids - protect them now, protect their future
2008-09-12 09:17:00
Why choose natural and organic foods for your little ones? The reasons are compelling - from helping to protect our planet to supporting healthy development in our children. Organic tastes great, too!!!More than one million children between the ages of one and five ingest in excess of a dozen pesticides daily from conventional fruits and veggies. It's the accumulation of exposures to these toxins that is concerning. For a list of the foods containing the highest and lowest levels of dangerous pesticides refer to this article. The foods your infant may enjoy the most are often at high risk for pesticide contamination. Baby food is typically made of condensed fruits or veggies, which can concentrate pesticide residues from non organic produce. Because children consume more of these foods per ...

These Foods Should Always Be Organic - if pesticides matter to you
2008-09-12 02:42:00
We've all heard how eating organic food is healthier than conventional grown foods. Even if you are still on the fence about organic you can still start slow and reap the benefits. If nothing else, you can see if the organic real food tastes better to you. There are a few clean fruits and veggies so if you can't afford to go 100% organic choose these non-organics: AsparagusAvocadosBananasBroccoliCabbageEggplantKiwiMangoesOnionsPineapplesSweet cornSweet peas The research used to compile the following list was from extensive independent tests run by the FDA and the USDA from more than 100,000 samples of food. The chemical pesticides detected in these studies are known to cause cancer, birth defects, nervous system and brain damage, and developmental problems in children. If you are trying to ...

Healthy Food Makes Thyroid Sluggish
2008-09-10 09:37:00
Are your healthy food choices making you chronically tired? If you suffer from extreme fatigue and any of the following conditions, it may be from an under active thyroid due to not enough iodine in your body.Does this sound like you?* Hard to concentrate, poor memory* Body muscle and joint aches* Chills, even in warm weather* Sad, blue moods* Dry skin, brittle nails, hair thinning* Chronic constipation* Weight gain for no known reason* Low sex drive One in three women is tired, heavy and blue as a result of poorly operating thyroid. "Millions of women don't know their diet is deficient in iodine," says Ann Haiden, D.O., an internist in Kentfield, CA. "This mineral enables thyroid hormones that regulate cellular metabolism."Healthy choices are contributing to the epidemic. Women are limiti...

Her First Week At The Gym
2008-09-10 01:00:00
A WOMAN'S WEEK AT THE GYM - Thanks, Gwen! This is dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into a regular workout routine."Dear Diary,"For my birthday this year, my daughter (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try."I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Brad, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My daughter seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress."_____ MONDAY: Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found ...

Are Vitamins Giving You Expensive Urine?
2008-09-08 09:57:00
Have you heard people laugh about Americans having the most expensive urine in the world? That's because the vitamins most Americans take are synthetic, and 90% of synthetic vitamins pass through the body unabsorbed.A synthetic vitamin or mineral is a laboratory simulation of a simple version of the real thing. In the plant, the vitamin/mineral lives with many other vitamins, minerals and nutrients - the "cofactors" the body needs to absorb and use it.If the cofactors are missing, as they are in synthetic vitamins, the body steals them from its organs, bones, muscles and other tissue. That's why taking synthetic vitamins/minerals over time can be harmful to your health. They deplete the body of other nutrients. For example, taking synthetic calcium regularly depletes the body of magnesium. ...

America's Feedlots - Another Reason To Support Grass-Feeding Ranchers
2008-09-04 00:13:00
For years the beef from grocery and discount stores has cost much less than pasture-fed beef -- the reasons for the price difference are not pretty.I just read Pasture Perfect by Jo Robinson. Jo is a leading expert on the benefits of grass feeding and says nearly all of the beef and other meats sold in America's grocery stores comes from animals raised in feedlots or large facilities called CAFOs or "Confined Animal Feeding Operations."It's expensive to raise cattle so the beef industry does whatever it can to make the animals grow faster. Instead of the three years it takes grass-fed cattle to reach maturity, factory-farmed cattle reach slaughter weight in just one or two years. The process reduces the meat's nutritional value, stresses the animals, increases the risk of bacterial contami...

What's The Benefit Of Meat From Cloned Animals?
2008-09-03 01:13:00
There's another un-natural food for Americans. Now it's meat and milk from cloned cows. We could already be drinking milk or eating burgers from these cloned cows. Personally I don't want to consume food from a cloned animal. Not only is this meat not researched near enough, it avoids the actual problems with our meat supply. How about cleaning up the feedlots or do away with them? Why not spend money teaching Americans how to eat real food?Reported on Reuters Health: Food and milk from the offspring of cloned animals may have entered the U.S. food supply, the U.S. government said on Tuesday, but it would be impossible to know because there is no difference between cloned and conventional products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in January meat and milk from cloned cattle, swine...

This Is How Much Water Your Body Needs...
2008-09-02 01:22:00
Have you wondered how much water your body really needs? Water is very good for us and your body needs it to stay alive. But do we really need 8 - 8 oz glasses a day? It depends.I learned how to figure out how much water my body needs, not a general number for everyone.Take your weight - divide by 2 and this is the ounces of water your body needs. So if you weigh 170 divide by 2 = 85 ounces of water per day.As you lose weight the amount of water you need will go down. Start the day with 2 cups of warm or hot water. And remember your body does it's repair work at night so drink 2 cups of water before going to bed.Water must be filtered. Reverse Osmosis or at least carbon filters until you can get the RO filter. Don't use the small bottles of water because the plastic is wasteful and fills o...

Cinnamon Speeds Metabolism - All Natural
2008-08-29 02:46:00
Cinnamon is more than just a great spice for baking. I learned from Dr. Heidi's "Little Spa" ER I weight control program that cinnamon speeds up the metabolism so adding cinnamon to drinks or real food can help weight loss, fat burning. Cinnamon is good for arthritis, heart health, type 2 diabetes and blood pressure. To read more about these health benefits read WHFoods here.I've been adding cinnamon to my body toddy drink. It tastes wonderful and is a good fit with the other fat burning ingredients.Cinnamon is available in stick or ground form. It may be tempting to buy the jumbo economy-size container - don't because cinnamon starts to lose it's flavor, smell and nutritional benefits after about 6 months for ground or in about a year for stick form. There are four main types of cinnamon. ...

Are Your Vitamins Safe?
2008-08-28 10:40:00
When you buy vitamins do you know what the ingredients mean and what benefit or potential harm they will cause?I didn't have a clue for many years. I fell for the marketing hype. I didn't know how to read and understand the labels. Well that changed last year after the pet food recalls. I started helping pet lovers understand what is really in pet food. Then the light bulb went off and I realized I was feeding my human family synthetic ingredients, in our vitamin supplements. I went on a learning journey and was so shocked that our health is not always the most important thing in the vitamin industry. It's profit driven for many. How do you feel when taking a vitamin supplement?Do you sleep restfully and wake refreshed?Do you have energy to chase after the kids or make love with your partne...

Canned Tomatoes May Affect Hormone Production
2008-08-27 02:13:00
I've never felt comfortable in the kitchen because cooking is not my thing at all. But when I hear tips about foods my ears perk up because real food is my thing.Anyway, if you must use tomatoes that are not fresh do not use the canned ones, find the ones in glass jars. Why?"Tomato products are acidic and the can liners have toxic chemicals that have been shown to leach into the products, and may affect hormone production," said Dr. Heidi Dulay,Ed.D. M.S. N.C. - Adjunct Professor, Holistic Studies, JFKU, Pleasant Hill, CA. Teaching two Master's Degree Level courses:1. Comparative dietary approaches 2. Practicum in Holistic Health: Tibetan Qigong 3. Himalayan Salt For Health
2008-08-26 01:10:00
Have you ever thought much about salt except to not eat too much of it? About a year ago I switched to sea salt because it offers more health benefits than plain table salt. Last month I learned about Himalayan salt. It has over 80 minerals so it's like taking a mineral supplement. How cool is that?Unrefined salt is living salt. Table salt is actually 97.5% sodium chloride and 2.5% chemicals such as moisture absorbents, and iodine. Dried at over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, the excessive heat alters the natural chemical structure of the salt. Himalayan is by far the best salt to use. If you have high blood pressure don't be afraid to add Himalayan salt to your diet. This is a different food ...

What Kind Of Health Nut Are You?
2008-08-25 09:13:00
I'm happy to feature another guest post from Health Nut Wannabe. Today Sue shares her experience with shopping for real food and how this relates to her weight loss journey. Thanks Sue for another well written and really helpful article."I want to eat right, but I don't always do it." Does that sound at all like you? There are about a dozen books on my shelf that talk about the nutritional value of foods, and which ones are best and which ones to avoid. Some of them agree with each other, and a few don't. Some say eat when you are hungry and don't when you're not. Some say eat small meals on a regular basis to keep from getting hungry. Some say eat fat, some say remove the fat. Some allow brown rice, whole wheat bread and whole grain pasta, some say NO grain...

Should Fat People Just Vomit For Weight Loss?
2008-08-22 09:00:00
So should fat people just vomit to lose weight? That's what Kim Klaver asked after one commenter made the suggestion on this blog post. It came about because in the ER Fat Burn program people are losing weight without exercising.Appalled that ER Fat Burn does not mandate exercise to lose weight, she asks the participants: "if losing weight is your only goal, why not eat whatever you want and then just go to the bathroom and stick your fingers down your throat."This commenter is not alone in insisting that overweight people must exercise to lose weight. If they don't exercise, that means they're lazy. And they might as well do what desperate people do...become bulimic.Another commenter to the same post wrote:"Some traine...

Oats For Varicose Veins And Much More...
2008-08-22 01:02:00
I'm happy to share a guest post from Health Nut Wannabe, Sue. Sue did her homework on Oats and found some really healthful info - so here it is, thumbs up for Health Nut Wannabe.I think it's a safe bet that when you think about herbal medicine, you don't immediately think about oatmeal, right? But the humble oat, (Avena sativa), disguised as a boring breakfast food, is actually a powerful medicinal plant which has been used throughout history in many parts of the world including the Mediterranean, China, and more recently, North America.Ever since people gave up their nomadic ways and became agrarian (staying in one place, growing and harvesting), they have cultivated grain to produce food. But oats were also used by traditional healers for chronic illness to restore strength and vigor. Ad...

How To Read Labels On Meat
2008-08-20 02:58:00
Did you know that approximately 70 percent of all antibiotics and related drugs produced in the United States are given to livestock and poultry? These drugs are used for nontherapeutic purposes such as accelerating growth and preventing the diseases caused by overcrowded and unsanitary conditions on "factory farms." Unfortunately, this practice results in antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can cause difficult-to-treat diseases in humans. You can help stop this problem by making smart meat purchases. Meat from animals raised without antibiotics is available but shoppers need to look carefully at product labels. There are a number of labels meant to appeal to discriminating consumers, but they do not all mean the same thing or...

My 5 Week Weight Control With Dr. Heidi And Real Food
2008-08-19 01:18:00
The last 5 weeks I've been part of Dr. Heidi's Extreme Regime program because I'm very interested in food and health. I know there is a direct link with what we eat, our health and weight. Also, I'm losing the baby fat after 10 years, not much to lose but enough to make me feel and look better. I'm not bloated now, yeah... At a glance here are a few food tips I took away from the ER weight control program. No diet foods, no boxed frozen foods to buy, no fake foods, simple real food. Also no calorie counting, no starving or hunger, not cooking different meals for the ER program and my family (we all eat the same food), no strict diet plan or eating things I hate. Lastly no exercise required (of course I exercise for health - but not for the first phase of fat...

What Makes Your Cereal Go Snap - Crackle - Pop?
2008-08-18 01:19:00
Snap, crackle, pop! Does your cereal talk to you? Rice Krispies -- the breakfast that talks to you -- has been around for nearly 80 years, but scientists have only recently figured out why it makes that noise.Food scientist Ted Labuza, says there are a few reasons."Rice Krispies has sugar in it. It's the sugar that causes it to interact in the different way with the starch, and that makes a big difference," Labuza, who is professor of Food Science and Engineering at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, tells DBIS. In fact, sugar is the second ingredient in the Krispies. It's much lower on the list in other cereals.Another reason? Rice Krispies are cooked at such a high temperature, the sugar forms crystals that behave almost like glass. If you crush them, they'll break into pieces.Durin...

Eat Fat To Get Skinny - Our Results Prove It!
2008-08-15 09:15:00
Have you ever tried a lowfat diet and felt like you were starving to death? Fat actually sends a signal to your brain to tell you when to stop eating. So, if you don't get enough fat in a meal, you will never feel completely satisfied and will usually end up overeating.Another problem with lowfat diets is that lowfat means high-carb. And high-carb eventually leads to low blood sugar. When your blood sugar drops, your body goes into a storage mode and your metabolism slows down. Also, when you eat high-carb foods you trigger the release of insulin, which tells your body to store fat.People on lowfat diets typically avoid protein foods from animal sources because they contain saturated fats. This is not a very wise choice for most people because the only complete source of protein found in n...
