'Hazardous Drinking' More Common Than Thought
2008-06-23 01:54:11
(HealthDay News) -- Hazardous drinking -- drinking more than guidelines recommend -- is common and needs to be recognized as a genuine public health problem, Finnish researchers say.Currently, alcohol-use disorders are divided into two categories: alcohol abuse/harmful use and alcohol dependence. Some experts believe these two categories aren't sufficient and that hazardous drinking should be added as a diagnosis that precedes the other two."This is an issue that needs to be debated. Current tools... do not allow for a phenomenon like hazardous drinking, when a person drinks too much and is at risk but is not alcohol dependent," Dr. Mauri Aalto, chief physician at Finland's National Public Health Institute, said in a prepared statement.Aalto and his colleagues analyzed data on 4,477 Finns,...

Mulling Hormones for Menopause Symptoms?
2008-06-03 02:25:30
By Theresa TamkinsThis is the second section of a two-part article. Read more about hormones and the risks of heart disease.Thinking about taking hormones to reduce menopausal symptoms, but concerned about the breast cancer risk? Well, it’s a tricky decision.Although millions of women were routinely put on hormones during menopause in the past, many stopped taking them in 2002, when one part of the Women’s Health Initiative trial was halted because the hormones didn’t prevent heart disease, as was once hoped, but did increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer (as well as heart disease and strokes). | Hocus Focus |
2008-05-28 00:28:48
By Jennifer GaramI knew it was time for a change when I passed a neighbor in Brooklyn recently and was unable to answer the simple question “How ya doing?” Yoga relaxes me, but it doesn’t always slow my brain down long enough for me to notice how I am. A little guided meditation seemed to be in order. That’s how I found myself propped up on pink and purple velvety cushions last week in a candlelit Manhattan studio, where I was invited by a soothing voice to close my eyes and align my spine. I exhaled deeply, ready for peace and quiet at last.Just then the distinct rum-pah-pum-pum of a drum leaked into the room. The teacher continued speaking calmly, but soon came the squeal of a horn section. It became clear that a full-on marching band was passing under the window.Read More

Gene Therapy in Rats Reduces Cocaine Use
2008-04-19 07:06:10
(HealthDay News) -- Using gene therapy to increase the level of dopamine -- a pleasure-related chemical -- receptors in rats' brains reduced their desire for cocaine by 75 percent, U.S. researchers say.Previous research by the same team at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, in Upton, N.Y., found that increasing the level of dopamine receptors reduced rats' desire for alcohol."By increasing dopamine D2 receptor levels, we saw a dramatic drop in these rats' interest in cocaine. This provides new evidence that low levels of dopamine D2 receptors may play an important role in not just alcoholism but in cocaine abuse as well. It also shows a potential direction for addiction therapies," study lead a...

2008-04-04 06:28:17
Thiruvananthapuram: UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Friday said the messages of universal love and total rejection of caste-ism were more relevant at a time now when religion was being used to divide people.Speaking on the occasion of the foundation stone laying ceremony of the building of the Santhigiri Research Foundation at nearby Pothenkode, Gandhi said the founder of Santhigiri Ashram, Navajyothi Karunakara Guru’s messages on universal love and casteism were more applicable as religion was being used to trigger trouble. The Santhigiri Research Foundation was at present operating as an umbrella body co-ordinating initiatives in research being conducted by its various wings including those of Ayurveda and Siddha systems.

Give and Be Happy
2008-03-21 00:52:03
(HealthDay News) -- Money can buy happiness, at least when you spend it on others. That's the conclusion of a study appearing in the March 21 issue of Science. It found that spending on others brings people greater satisfaction than buying things for themselves. What's more, most people seemed unaware of this hidden key to happiness, the researchers said."It's tied to 'pro-social' spending," said Elizabeth Dunn, lead author of the study and assistant professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada."Most research has looked at the relationship of how much people make and how happy they are," Dunn said. "We examined what they did with it. It's an obvious question but it hasn't been tackled."Hikes in income can help boost happiness, but the effect is weak, pri...

Aromatherapy Falls Short, Study Finds

(HealthDay News) -- Aromatherapy: It may smell good, but is it actually good for you?Researchers are reporting that two of the most commonly used scents in aromatherapy do nothing to heal wounds, relieve pain or enhance immune status, although one did briefly improve mood.In fact, in some cases, distilled water showed more of a salutary effect, the study found."Keep it in mind before spending a lot of money" on aromatherapy, said study lead author Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, director of the Division of Health Psychology at Ohio State University. "I buy perfume, because I like the smell. If you enjoy the smell, that's one thing, but don't buy perfume because you expect to change your physiology or to really influence your h...

2008-02-28 04:04:56
(HealthDay News) -- Curcumin, an ingredient in the curry spice tumeric, can reduce heart enlargement and may lower the risk of heart failure, Canadian researchers say.The scientists at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre of the Toronto General Hospital tested the effects of curcumin in mice with enlarged hearts (hypertrophy) and found it could prevent and reverse the condition, restore heart function, and reduce scar formation. The study was published in the February issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. If human clinical trials support these findings, curcumin-based treatments may provide a safe and inexpensive new option for patients with heart enlargement, according to the researchers. They said curcumin works directly in the cell nucleus by preventing abnormal unraveling of the chrom...

When Worry Consumes You
2008-02-25 01:04:14
(HealthDay News) -- Almost everyone worries about something -- credit card debt, car repair bills, an upcoming work review, whether your child will get into a good college. A little worry is natural and normal. But when you become a 24/7 fret machine, that's not normal. You may have what doctors call generalized anxiety disorder, or GAD -- a condition marked by worry about most aspects of life that you feel you can't control. It can leave you feeling physically exhausted and emotionally drained, and also frustrate loved ones who must listen to you verbalize all that anxiety."This worry process never ends," said Dr. David H. Barlow, professor of psychology and psychiatry at Boston University and founder and director emeritus of the university's Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders."The k...

(HealthDay News) -- When drugs and dietary changes don't provide relief from the pain, bloating and other unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, patients may want to try a different approach.Recent studies show that using one's own thoughts in a process called cognitive behavioral therapy may help ease symptoms. Likewise, using hypnosis to visualize the pain and imagine it seeping away can be a powerful treatment strategy, too."Research indicates that the probability of achieving benefits is excellent with either approach, even for patients who haven't improved from standard medical care," said Olafur S. | Health Tip: Giving Pain Medication to Your Child |
2008-02-09 08:21:37
(HealthDay News) - Giving your child medications, even over-the-counter medicines, should always be carefully monitored by your doctor. The American Academy of Family Physicians offers these suggestions before you give any pain medication to your child:If a person younger than age 18 has the flu or chickenpox, never give the person aspirin, which could lead to a rare but deadly condition called Reye's Syndrome. Acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) is a generally safe painkiller for young children. Be careful about giving ibuprofen to children who are allergic to aspirin, as they may also be allergic to ibuprofen. Pain relievers may be dangerous for children with asthma, so don't administer them without a doctor's consent. Be careful not to give your child too much of the same medication. | 9/11 Attacks Changed Way Americans Dream |
2008-02-01 22:29:08
(HealthDay News) -- The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, not only caused huge political and social changes, they also altered the dreams of Americans. That's the suggestion from a small study published in the February issue of Sleep.Dr. Ernest Hartmann of Tufts University and Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Boston looked at 11 men and 33 women, aged 22-70, who'd been recording their dreams for at least two years. Each of the participants provided information about 20 consecutive dreams, 10 before 9/11 and 10 after 9/11.The study found that dreams after 9/11 showed more intense images, but weren't longer, more dreamlike or more bizarre than those before terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.I...

Newer Rheumatoid Arthritis Drugs Lower Production of B Cells
2008-01-29 21:53:48
(HealthDay News) -- Certain drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) provide a powerful, previously unknown, benefit for the immune system, say University of Rochester Medical Center researchers. They found that drugs known as anti-TNF compounds -- including Enbrel, Humira and Remicade -- help reduce the activity of abnormal B cells that play a role in autoimmune diseases such as RA and lupus. TNF is a chemical messenger that fires up the immune system. Anti-TNF drugs inhibit TNF.The findings, published in the Jan. 15 issue of The Journal of Immunology, suggest that these drugs improve the health of patients in a way that hadn't been recognized, the researchers said."The most imp...

Pet Turtles Linked to Rise in Salmonella Infections
2008-01-24 20:21:54
(HealthDay News) -- Small pet turtles were to blame for 103 cases of Salmonella infection in the second half of last year, mostly in young children, U.S. health officials said Thursday. But the true number of infections with the potentially fatal bacteria is undoubtedly much higher, officials added.Even though the sale of small turtles has been banned in the United States since 1975, the number of these reptiles being purchased for children has been increasing, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."This is a larger number of cases than we would usually see," said Julie Harris, a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer. "We haven't documented such a large number of cases before associated with turtle exposure."No deaths have be...

Saline Nasal Wash Helps Kids Fight Colds, Flu
2008-01-22 03:15:02
(HealthDay News) -- Rinsing with a special saline nasal wash made from Atlantic seawater improves symptoms in children with colds and flu, and may prevent recurrence of these infections, a new study claims."We brush our teeth every day, however, we do not pay attention to our noses -- a potential gate for infection," said study co-author Dr. Jana Skoupa, of Pharma Projects in Prague, Czech Republic. "Nasal wash should be used, based on our findings, immediately."The study seems to confirm what many doctors already know."We have recommended this for years. This study gives some objective evidence," said Dr. Jonathan Field, emeritus director of the pediatric allergy and asthma clinic at New York University/Bellevue Medical Center in New York City.An alternativ...

Bone-Strengthening Drugs May Be Overprescribed
2008-01-19 06:05:08
(HealthDay News) -- Drug companies exaggerate the benefits and downplay the risks of prescribing bone-strengthening drugs for women whose bones are weakened but who do not have osteoporosis, a new report claims.Drugs such as raloxifene, alendronate and risedronate do reduce the risk of fractures of women with osteoporosis, according to the article in the Jan. 19 issue of BMJ."But what they [drug makers] do is to argue that the effect of treating pre-osteoporosis [osteopenia] and osteoporosis is similar," explained study co-author Dr. Pablo Alonso-Coello, a family practitioner at Hospital Sant-Pau in Barcelona. However, many women with osteopenia have such a low risk of fractures that drug treatment would provide almost no benefit, he noted."This mov...

Additional Benefits of Curcumin
2008-01-14 21:24:33
Some researchers say curcumin inhibits angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, which tumors use to nourish themselves as they spread. (Mod Med 1998 Jun:4(6); 376-83).Scientists at M.D. Anderson Hospital, in Texas, wrote in 2003: Extensive research over the last 50 years has indicated curcumin can both prevent and treat cancer. This anti-cancer potential of curcumin stems from its ability to suppress a proliferation of a wide variety of : tumor cells. down-regulate transcription factors FF-KappaB, Ap-1 and Egr-1. down regulate the expression of COX-2, LOX, NOS< MMp-g, uPA, TNF, chemokines, cell surface adhesion molecules and cyclin D1. down-regulate growth factor receptors such as (EGFR and HER-2) and inhibit the activity of c-Jun N terminal Kinase, protein tyrosine Kinases and protein serine/threonine Kinases.more information's: http://www.dreddy-clinic.com/
