IS ANYONE WORRIED ABOUT THE GOOGLE AD GORILLA?
2008-07-04 13:04:00
Last week a congressional panel brought together small business representatives to discuss the growing dominance of Google and Yahoo when it comes to Web ads.The two search engines, with Google clearly at the forefront, pretty much are the only real choices business owners have if they want to hawk their wares on the Web.Rep. Charlie Gonzalez D-Texas, chairman of subcommittee that held the hearing, questioned whether new laws are needed to make sure small firms don’t get pummeled in what is shaping up to be a Web advertising monopoly.

Yahoo! to test Google's Adsense for Search
2008-04-12 02:27:00
The partnership between Google and Yahoo! has come as a big shock for software major Microsoft. Microsoft had shown interest in buying Yahoo! in January this year when the stock price of Yahoo! was hovering around its 52-week low. Yahoo! declined Microsoft's takeover bid saying that the offer undervalues the company. In an official statement released on Wednesday, Yahoo said that it will test Google's AdSense for two weeks on not more than 3% of its search queries.Brad Smith at Microsoft believes that any agreement between Google and Yahoo! will result in Google's monopoly in the search advertising market. He further added that Microsoft is having a close watch on the whole situation and the company’s US $44.6 billion takeover offer remains valid.

Google Ads Gain Scroll Buttons
2008-04-04 17:11:00
On the Inside AdSense Blog, Katie Mandel explained, "While the ads the user initially sees may be relevant to a publisher's content, they may not be precisely what the user is seeking - for example, a user may see ads about cheddar and brie cheese but would prefer more information about Swiss cheese. With the 'next' and 'previous' buttons, users can view more cheese ads until a Swiss cheese ad appears."Of course, with or without the buttons, users can also just leave the site, but since the buttons make this outcome less likely, publishers are likely to embrace their appearance. Maybe not too much - Mandel adds, "You won't generate earnings for clicks on the 'next' and 'previous' buttons" - but at least a little.

In the past few years Google has been working hard on making sure that links from low quality sites don't count as much as those from high quality sites and the link marketplace has changed dramatically.Dave Naylor started an interesting discussion on his blog this week about how websites are selling text links disguised as Google Adsense adverts, purely to avoid being spotted as a link seller. This kind of stealthy approach to buying and selling links just shows how far underground the link marketplace has gone recently.

Google's new video version of AdSense will let any site that streams over a million videos per month apply transparent text overlay ads and video preroll ads to their videos, giving them a new way to make money from showing videos, even if those videos get embedded on other sites. The video versions of the familiar Google Adsense ads will likely cost Google's clients a lot more than text ads do, so there's a big opportunity here for sites that show lots of videos, music sites included.Record labels used to give their music videos away -- a holdover from the days when MTV could really move product.

Google and Yahoo! weren't born yesterday
2008-03-18 15:07:00
Let's take Google's AdSense program, for example. It's the undisputed top dog since its 2003 launch. 34% of Google's $4.8 billion in revenue this past quarter came from ads displayed on its partner pages. However, $1.44 billion of the $1.64 billion derived through AdSense goes right back into paying for the program, mostly in the form of payments to publishers. So AdSense is an important top-line contributor, but a miniscule producer on the bottom line. Why bother running the program? Well, it's a great way to clear up unused inventory, attract new sponsors, and keep competitors away.

2008-02-22 15:35:00
Although it's not clear how much money publishers will make from the video-based ads -- nor is it clear how many publishers will be eligible for the program -- conventional wisdom is that there's a lot more cash in video-based ads than plain text ads. There are several types of advertising formats available under the beta program, including InVideo overlay ads and text overlay ads. Publishers' cut of the text overlay ads will be measured based on a cost-per-click basis (that is, how often an ad is clicked by a reader), and the cut from InVideo ads will be calculated on a CPM basis (or cost per thousand impressions).

This is going to be a bad news for those who make a significant income through the Adsense sign-ups, but unfortunately stay outside North America, Latin America and Japan. It is so because, Google AdSense has now announced that it is going to phase out of the AdSense Referral units program from publishers staying outside the said regions. The reason behind this step has been attributed to the low turn-around of AdSense sign-ups from countries other than these areas. Thus soon the option to create a referral button for Adsense will no longer appear in the users accounts.

This week I received a comment that peaked my interest and begged the question, When should I add Google AdSense to my website? This was not the first time that I heard this question. It always comes up when people launch websites and it is always in connection with generating traffic. So is it good to add AdSense on the first day of launch or should AdSense be added when web traffic reaches a certain level. Well, lets look at mindset and were you plan to promote your website.Where you promote your website in the beginning will directly attribute to if you use AdSense in the beginning or not. I am a believer that when you first start launch a website you should use directories as some of the first linking partners. Direct
