Reporting SEO Competition to Google
2008-05-27 15:45:00
CrimsonGirl : “whether you also engage in tactics such as buying links is besides the point. I buy links in certain situations. Again, that is part of the job. I expect competitors report me just as I report them….The formal reporting of purchased links through Google webmaster tools (the other search engines don’t have anything analogous) is just one way and a relatively recent avenue for reporting competitors. Years ago there were snail mail letters to Google’s president (and Yahoo’s president and Microsoft’s president). Email to search engine engineers. Email and snail mail letters to other webmasters who link to your competitors requesting them to remove the link.”

Want to rank highly on Google? Despite the myths, there are three key areas you can address to unlock the potential of search engines for your website. Many people see high rankings on Google as elusive and costly. There are few experienced and effective search engine optimisation (SEO) consultants in the New Zealand market, and few web developers are building websites that are SEO friendly out of the box.So clients are missing out on valuable “free” traffic from the search engines.

Tough Times for SEO Agencies
2008-04-20 05:46:00
2009 proves to be a tougher year for search agencies than ever before, with the removal of the Google best practice funding programme, some agencies have a massive gap of net profit to fill, of course many agencies quote they predicted this happening and that it has been built into there forecasts for sometime. This is no more than words, look at the industry activity closely, many agencies actively promoting themselves through paid search, not only this, but offering free trials, this is the first time I have seen such activity from certain agencies who seem to be suddenly making a desperate attempt to get clients on board.

5 ways to beat the SEO competition in Google
2008-04-12 02:31:00
1. Build credibility with GoogleBefore attempting to rank on a highly trafficked keyword (i.e “Furniture”) you first need to build your credibility with Google. This means you should be seen as relevant source for “furniture” and gain rankings on related niche keywords. Niche keywords have lower SEO competition, hence are easier to rank on.2. Find the niches in GoogleFor furniture, among the many possibilities, we would suggest going for “Ducal Furniture”. This is because it attracts a good number of searches and only has 16,000 sites competing for this keyword in Google UK, compared to 1.3m for “Furniture”. This will be a lot easier to rank on with the right on-site optimisation techniques (i.e meta tags, keyword themes, article marketing).

Focus on search optimization, and then expand into other marketing areas
2008-04-02 04:13:00
A potential client recently asked a good question. She regularly reads various search-engine-optimization websites, and she was confused as to the current meaning of the term "SEO." What, she wondered, was the difference between SEO and online marketing?Search engine optimization, or SEO, is constantly changing. As the major search engines update their algorithms and redefine how their search results will be determined and displayed, the SEO industry must adjust and redefine to follow those trends. But there is a new trend as well: Search optimizers going well beyond search engine results and into other marketing areas but still calling it SEO. It gets a bit confusing.

Increase Your Page Ranks and Generates Your Revenues by Using SEO
2008-03-22 11:57:00
Google applies more than 1000 factors while ranking any website and positioning it in the displayed results and page ranking is one of them. Somehow a page rank provides a slight idea about your importance among the millions of WebPages on the internet. A better page rank denotes that how unique you are in the crowd of World Wide Web and you have some quality information or services to offer. Higher PR never correlates you with higher position in the search engines result pages but differentiate your position among your competitors’ that you’re much better than all.Page Rank is the most controversial topic ever discussed among the search engine experts. Most of them seem a bit confused about how pages are ranked, what are the factors affecting a page ranking etc. Page Rank is quite a mathematical formula that seems difficult but the reality is it is as simple as any other search engine algorithms.

Inbound linkage to your site is extremely important

Inbound linkage to your site is extremely important, but it must be done correctly. What is correctly? First and foremost, avoid link exchanges and other free-for-all link reciprocation schemes (including a "links" page or "resources" page in which anybody can join). Only link to sites you personally know, and keep these to a minimum. If you are blogging, increasing your global link popularity is pretty easy through blog syndication and social bookmarking. We'll talk more about that later. First, you should make your blog articles available for syndication and distribution across the Web.

There's no one single thing that can make your Web page show up in the top of the search results. But there are several little things that can. Pay attention to the key components of SEO and synergize your optimization efforts, and you'll find it much easier to succeed.Disclaimer: I'm openly admitting to not having researched the proper keywords. What I'm sharing is an example only. So, if you own a sporting goods store, don't assume that you've just received free keyword research. There could easily be better ways to refer to these products.

Yes, most people on the internet find sites through searching. So, yes, you can get a lot of traffic if you rank highly for relevant keywords. But traffic alone is meaningless. You have to look at traffic + engagement. Traffic + bounce rate. Unless your entire goal with the site is to monetize through CPM-based ads on the home page, your site needs to be compelling to the searchers who land there so that they’ll stay.In other words, if you abandon great writing and content development, if you neglect the question of how to make the site better to use, you are simply being short-sighted and are ignoring all the rules of marketing. That’s not Google’s fault. That’s your own fault for not looking at the right metrics.

Is a blog better for search engines?
2008-02-25 02:19:00
This is always a little frustrating for me. It's a question that suggests right from the start someone is planning to create content primarily for Engines">search engines. So my stock answer is usually something along the lines of explaining a blog is just a Web site (driven by a content management system). Is it the format the end user would prefer to receive your content in?I understand people ask the question because blogs create and attract fairly dense linkage data. Everyone knows how important linkage data is. But that always leads to my quality-over-quantity mantra.

Google especially has cracked down hard on paid links in the last few months. To put it succinctly, they don't pass page rank. If you want to buy a link from a site, only do it if you believe the link itself will be a good source of traffic -- in other words, only do it for legitimate advertising purposes. Do not do it if your purpose is for that link to transfer page rank or increase your ranking, as it likely will not.

Having a -1 to -10 scale would really give me something to work with. If a designer tells a story, then the search engineer provides directions to the lecture hall where it's told. The SEO side focuses heavily on traffic and visibility, believing a Web site must be seen to be heard. Now here's a surprise. Remember those cool technologies the creative team wants to use? Well, SEO wants to use them too. They're just more cautious. While an SEO-friendly Web site doesn't need to be straight HTML, SEO teams must take into consideration search engine spiders. Even if a site uses AJAX, key content must be accessible to spiders for indexing. This is where the two teams lock horns. When creative says Flash, SEO counters with CSS. When creative wants rollover navigation, SEO wants text-based. So what's more important: the experience or t
