U.S. Cover Proof for ECHO
2009-02-06 18:31:05
Diana just posted on her blog a picture of the proposed cover art for the U.S. edition of AN ECHO IN THE BONE. I would strongly encourage you all to go take a look at it!That's a caltrop on the cover, in case you were wondering. Diana says the "shape" of the book looks like this. For more on caltrops, book covers, and the shape of the book, look here for some of my previous blog entries:ECHO's Shape: It's a CaltropECHO's Cover DesignUK Cover Design for ECHOI think it looks fantastic, about as good as I could have hoped for. In fact I'm quite excited to see it!As Tess pointed out on Compuserve, if we're talking about jewel-tone covers, this one is apparently the black diamond. I like that idea a lot. What do the rest of you think? Feel free to comment here, or on Diana's blog, or join...

Thursday Thirteen
2009-02-06 04:44:43
I've seen the "Thursday Thirteen" meme on a number of sites recently, so I thought I'd give it a try myself.13 Things I Didn't Know Before I Read Diana Gabaldon's Books1) I didn't know that there had been Scottish settlers in colonial North Carolina, let alone that they were so influential.2) I'd heard of Stonehenge, of course, but I had no idea that there were stone circles elsewhere in the world.3) I knew nothing at all about Scottish history before I read these books. "Culloden", to me, was a brand of water faucet I'd seen advertised on TV, and nothing more.4) Mammoths roaming around the mountains of what would someday become western North Carolina? I had no idea. (And frankly, it's still pretty mind-boggling to me.)5) I didn't know that I could come to appreciate, let alone be addic...

New poll for February
2009-02-01 06:59:11
January Poll ResultsResults of the January poll are as follows:What do you think about the OUTLANDER graphic novel?I'm looking forward to getting a different perspective on the events of OUTLANDER. (42.2%)I just want to see more of Jamie and Claire's story, and I don't care how we get it. (17.4%)I can't wait to see Diana's vision of what Jamie and Claire really look like. (11.0%)I'm not crazy about the idea, but I'll probably buy it anyway. (10.1%)I'm glad that Diana is writing the script and working closely with the artist. (6.4%)It's a terrible idea. I don't want to see Jamie and Claire turned into comic book characters. (6.4%)Not sure yet. I want to see more of the sample artwork first. (3.7%)What's a graphic novel, and what does it have to do with OUTLANDER? (2.8%)Thanks so much to e...

Pre-orders and release dates
2009-01-25 08:41:46
Pre-Orders for AN ECHO IN THE BONESome of you may have noticed that Amazon.com (the U.S. site) is now accepting pre-orders for AN ECHO IN THE BONE, with a projected publication date of September 29, 2009. Before you start getting too excited, let me offer a few words of caution.1) Diana is still WRITING the book. Last I heard, she was hoping to be done by mid-February. Until the book is actually finished, I think it's premature to start talking about a specific release date. (Though Diana has consistently said that she expects it to be published sometime this fall.)2) When she was asked about the Amazon date on Compuserve, Diana's verbatim reply was "SOP for Amazon. <rolling eyes>". (SOP = Standard Operating Procedure.) In other words, the information posted on Amazon shouldn'...

Winter Thoughts
2009-01-22 09:42:42
We had four inches of snow here in Raleigh, NC, on Tuesday. That's the biggest snowfall we've had here in more than four years, and we've all been enjoying the novelty of it.It doesn't snow where I live nearly as often as it does in the mountains of western North Carolina, where Fraser's Ridge is supposed to be located. But I always enjoy the descriptions of winter scenes in the OUTLANDER books. Here are a few quotes that I wanted to share with you. (The pictures are not mine.)Winter in the Scottish Highlands...This quote is from the scene where Jamie and Claire leave Marcus MacRannoch's house, en route to the coast, the day after Jamie is rescued from Wentworth Prison:It was hard going through the snow. Less than a foot deep, the treacherous white stuff hid rocks, holes, and other ob...

Suggestions for poll topics
2009-01-19 07:40:13
I've been pleased with the response to the polls I have been running on my blog the last few months. If you've participated, thanks! (And if not, please take a moment to vote in the January poll.)Now that we're more than halfway through January, though, it occurred to me that I don't really have a good idea for a February poll. So if anyone out there has a suggestion or two for what you'd like to see as a future "OUTLANDER poll of the month" topic, please post here, or email me at karen.l.henry@gmail.com.Thanks in advance for your help!...

My blog has a new look
2009-01-16 06:17:34
Three-Column TemplateThe other day I stumbled across a site that explains how to turn a standard 2-column Blogger template into a 3-column template. So I thought I'd give it a try. The old format was starting to look rather cluttered. What do you think of the new look? If yo...

Historical Trivia
2009-01-14 11:42:58
I have always been fascinated by historical trivia, which is one reason I enjoy reading historical fiction so much. And Diana Gabaldon's books, of course, are a treasure trove for people who like to read about the minutiae of daily life in the 18th century, from the details of food and clothing and folk medicines in those days, to the proper way to make lead balls for a musket (by pouring molten lead into a bullet mold, as Jamie does in ABOSAA). <g>But the things that really catch my eye are the more unusual details, things that seem utterly bizarre by 21st-century standards. Some of my favorite examples from the boo...

OUTLANDER Challenge 2009
2009-01-09 12:38:08
I stumbled across this site today:http://outlanderchallenge.blogspot.com"The challenge is simple: to read or listen to (because audiobooks are a great format for these books) each of the six Outlander books in publication order prior to the release of An Echo in the Bone."Now that 2009 is here, and we are all eagerly anticipating the release of AN ECHO IN THE BONE, it's time to think about starting a re-read (or re-listen, if you're like me and you prefer the unabridged audio versions). If you start now, there's probably enough time to get through all six OUTLANDER books, and possibly the Lord John books as well.So....are you up for the challenge? I definitely am. I'm in the middle of ABOSAA at the moment myself, will probably listen to one or more of the Lord John books after that, just...
