Using SEO Keywords In Your Page Title
2008-04-25 12:00:00
To increase your website's ranking with search engines, it is very
important to use keywords you have chosen in the title of the page
concerned. A title tag is of course not the same as a meta description
or keyword tag, but it is still a very important factor to consider in
the overall optimization of your web page.
Any text you insert in your title tag will be viewed in the title
bar of browsers at the time they visit your site. To take advantage of
this, plan your keywords and theme carefully. You may also find that
some browsers will add their own name as an appendage to your own text.
As one of the most important deciding factors in how search engines
chose to rank your page is the actual text you have placed in the title
tag, spend time and thought over your choice of words. The major web
spiders will normally use the text of your title tag as the text that
is used for the title given to your site in the listings.
This text will act in much the same way as a newspaper he...

SEO Now Includes Friends and Family
2008-04-24 22:08:00
Did you ever think of SEO as a social activity? Typically, it's people posting to social networking sites, posting to blogs, submitting to directories, and tweaking away at the site code. It turns out that SEO is becoming a social activity. Aaron Wall put out a video on this very subject. I highly recommend it. There is a lot of good information there.

Driving Traffic Using ANY Subject
2008-04-22 00:56:00
Any subject can be used to drive traffic. In the midwest, we recently had an earthquake. In California, that may be a daily occurance, but in the midwest, it rarely happens, so it's big news. All you have to do is connect the dots for the reader.
I just wrote a post on my SpendingLess101.com blog about the midwest earthquake. You are probably wondering how an earthquake could be related to spending less money. When attempting to tie subjects together, you have to open your mind; thing broadly. You may even need to ask some friends to give you some ideas. As I said in the title, any subject can be used to drive traffic (and, anything can be tied to anything else). Here are some examples of tying two seemingly-unrelated subjects together:
Pizza / Bubbles: Although the .com bubble has burst, a lot of pizza companies are finding additional business through online orders.
Lawn Mower / Baseball: The LawnBoy SuperMax Mower is a rev...

Drive Ginormous Traffic: Redirect Microsoft.com To Your Domain
2008-04-18 14:00:00
Before I get to the meat of this post, let me tell you now that you will NOT be able to actually grab microsoft.com's traffic for yourself. I used that title as an example of what this post is about, which is using expired domains to drive traffic to your site. Besides, Billy G. would never let microsoft.com expire.
There are a ton of articles out there that profess the benefits of purchasing expired domain in order to utilize the traffic remaining on those domains. In How To Snatch An Expiring Domain, Mike Davidson tells all about his first experience with an expired domain. He indicated that he purchased the domain for $18.95 and in two and a half months, made $369. Another article, posted by Mike Santiago on MakeMoneyOnTheInternet.com, talks a lot about not only the existing traffic, but about building the domain up so it can eventually be sold for a higher price. Although a lot of the articles out there talk about making money on the site...

301 Redirect for SEO
2008-04-18 08:00:00
A 301 redirect is a method of redirecting a request for one particular page to an alternate URL. This method indicates to the search engines that the redirection is permanent. This is as opposed to a 302 redirect (temporary redirect). 301 redirect is of benefit to the site owner because the search engines will not look upon the redirection as a trick or duplicate content. It will see it as a valid redirection and it will go to the new site to pick up content.
Some uses for 301 redirect are:
You purchase a new domain and you want to move all of your blog's content there. In order to not lose your search engine ranking, you should 301 redirect all existing URLs to the respective location on the new site.
You want to split the content up on one site into multiple sites. The specific content going to new sites should be 301 redirected.
301 redirects are easy to set up. Learn how to set up 301 redirects for multiple platforms over at...

Site Age Calculation Change
2008-04-17 23:40:00
OFFICIAL RELEASE
The ICANNIWILL agency has decided to modify the method used to calculate the age of web sites. Currently, the calculation is made from the first day the URL was registered and is counted in years. As of 4/1/2008, the way that calculation is made has changed. The start date of the site will remain the same, however, the age of the site will now be calculated in Dog Years. This change is being made because of the inflation. Here is an example using the new calculation:
www.justanothersitewithads.com was purchased on 6/1/2005. If the calculation was made on 6/1/2007, it would produce a value of 14 years old.
If you have any questions about the new calculation, please send all correspondence to justanotheremailaddress@justanotherwebsite.com.

Using Twitter To Promote Your Blog
2008-04-17 19:30:00
You can even use the social networking site called Twitter to promote your site.
Here are some of the ways you can do that:
If your blog software is Wordpress, you can install a plugin that will automatically post an entry to your Twitter account when you submit a new post to your blog.
Add your web address to your Twitter profile and a link to the web address will show up next to your account name on every tweet.
If your friends have a Twitter account (and even if they don't---they can get one), have them tweet about your site and include a link.
I'm always on Twitter and I have clicked on links from there many times.

10 tips to drive massive traffic to a new blog
2008-04-11 14:23:00
I have a process that I go through when setting up a Blog">new blog. I tried to get it all down on paper, but there are so many things. Here are 10 of the things I do...
Write your blog posts as if they were articles, then post them to article directories: This can drive a lot of traffic and can also get your work out to the public because your articles will be used as content on multiple blogs...all linking back to you.
Social bookmark your posts. SocialPoster.com is the best tool for doing this that I've come across.
List your blog in blog and site directories.
Add your blog to DMOZ.org, which is syndicated on quite a lot of sites.
Comment on other people's blogs.
Join social networks, like Facebook, Friendster, MySpace, etc... #2 will drive this one because, most of the time, you have to be a member in order to post links on these sites.
Set up your RSS feed in FeedBurner.
Answer questions on Yahoo and Link...

Calgon!!! Take me AWAY!!!!
2008-04-08 17:56:00
In order to completely get this blog caught up, at least by my definition of caught up, I would have to:
All posts must be submitted to all of the social bookmarking sites at socialposter.com. Currently, 41 have been submitted, which leaves 117 left to go.
Remove all unnecessary category tags
Take all posts that can also qualify as articles and post them to article submission sites (20)
Write enough posts to have two show up each day for the next two weeks (get two weeks ahead on posting)
Drop 300 EntreCards per day / advertise site with all available ec’s (daily)
Submit RSS feed to feed directory sites (20)
Create links from each post to at least one other post on the site (internal linking)
This stuff will never be done because more keeps getting pilled onto me every day. I need some help. I need an assistant.

5 Reasons To Stop Stumbling and Start Living
2008-04-08 02:37:00
I have to admit that StumbleUpon is very addicting. I've stumbled for hours at a time; wasting the time I was going to use to promote my blogs or post entries. Actually, it's been kind of like EntreCard dropping. I've been addicted to that one also.
Here are 5 reasons you should stop Stumbling and start living:
1. The pile of granola bar wrappers and Mountain Dew cans are starting to impair your view of the monitor.
2. You have Stumbled EVERY site in StumbleUpon and are starting over where you originally started Stumbling 3 days ago.
3. StumbleUpon has warned you many times about staying logged onto their site and using up all of their bandwidth.
4. You've just stumbled upon your ex-wife's Match.com profile and you think she's HOT.
5. The StumbleUpon icon has worn off the stumble button.

Is internal linking really worth it?
2008-04-05 18:05:00
Deep linking or internal linking seems to be a good way to make your web site/blog more balanced in the material that gets read and that gets indexed by the search engines. What you want to do is create a web of links within your own site; sort of like the way the Internet works (the World Wide Web). Here are some ways to deep link:
Create a custom error page for 404 errors and put links on that page. I have not done this yet, but it makes sense...and I've seen it elsewhere. Even in error, your users get something useful.
Group your best posts of the week or month together and post a summary at the end of that time period. You might even do one for the end of the year.
Including links in the footer is also another great way to connect the various pieces of your site. I'll have to do that one too.
Start a series of posts (part 1, part 2, etc.). Link them together, and don't forget to post ALL of the parts.
Create an FAQ for y...

My Pagerank Problem
2008-04-04 13:23:00
The Problem:
I used to host this blog on the subdomain of my previous employer. Just before I was laid off, I got the feeling that something was going to happen real soon with the company, so I stayed up all night that night figuring out a way to move all 100+ posts (from Community Server) I had on their server to a blog (BlogEngine.NET ... only because I could directly port the data) on my own domain. Being in a rush, I just created the name blogs.johnasimpson.com off my main site (www.johnasimpson.com). Now, I find out that subdomains are bad. I checked my pagerank and here are the results:
- blogs.johnasimpson.com
- www.johnasimpson.com
Here are my options:
1. Move my blog to www.johnasimpson.com and 301-redirect all links.
2. Create a new domain name and start from scratch with PageRank and 301-redirect everything there.
3. {Buy an existing domain} with traffic on it and that has a suitable name.

Getting The Most Out Of EntreCard and 10ec From Me
2008-04-04 11:32:00
EntreCard seems to be an innovative idea in the area of driving traffic, and link exchanging. I wish I would have thought of it.
Once you join EntreCard, there are several approaches you can take when using the system. You should decide what your true motiviation for using this type of system is, and this will dictate your usage approach. There are two schools of thought; use the system to drive traffic to your web site and care only about yourself, or, use the system to gain exposure to new and interesting blogs/sites (and bloggers), and in addition, drive traffic to your site.
Regardless of how you plan on using the system, you should do these things to make the most of your usage of the system:
Make a flashy card. The colors should stand out.
When placing the EntreCard widget on your site, place it near the top of the page so it is easy to see for speed droppers.
Click the "Campaign" button and select the section you are interested in.

Text Ad Test
Ad: SAVE $10 - HP LaserJet P1006 Compact Laser Printer only $174.99
Promotion Venue(s): IM, Email, Blog
Goal: Make at least 1 sale by the end of the month by telling people about the product and blogging about it.
Actually, this is a pretty good product for the home user or the small business owner. Typically, the consumables cost so much that selling a printer at such a low price is not worth it. I purchased an HP 2600n a few years ago, figuring that instead of replacing the toner, when it ran out, I would just replace the printer. Well, I am at that point and I am contemplating what to do. The 2600n actually costs more than what I purchased it for originally. A complete toner set for the 2600n is $189.95. I can get a new printer for $299.
I like this printer and I would recommend it's purchase.

What is the difference between Google Adwords and Google Adsense?
2008-03-20 22:50:00
Advertisers that want to place ads on web sites will use Google Adwords in order to purchase advertising space on various web sites that display ads from Adsense">Google Adsense. Google Adsense is a program where publishers make space available on their web sites for ads. Those ads are served up by Adwords. Adsense is the typical way bloggers and other site owners make money with their sites. Professional Internet Marketers consider it to be a starting point and they usually leave Adsense after a short period of time. The primary issue is that very little control can be exercised as to what ads are shown in the ad zones made available to Adsense.
This blog is not currently using Google Adsense.

Turn your blog posts into articles
2008-03-20 02:24:00
Your blog posts, if they have some meat to them, are basically articles. If you make a blog post and you don't turn it into an article, you are leaving money on the table. Making a few small modifications to some of your better posts will turn them into articles. Since submitting articles to article directories is one of the big ways to promote your site, any re-use you can do will help you reach your goal much faster.
I have taken two of my blog posts and converted them to article.
- http://ezinearticles.com/?What-Does-the-Term-SERPS-Mean?&id=948682
Here are some of the things to modify:
1. Make a copy of the HTML version of the post and remove all links.
2. Add a {resource box} to the bottom of the post that includes some information about you and a linke to your web site. Generating in-bound links is one of the main reasons for submitting articles to article dir...

Do you have one of these: . If so, what is it? What does it do? What is 357?
Don't be alarmed. If you click on it, you are teken to the BlogFlux site. What is BlogFlux? According to their About page, BlogFlux is described as follows:
Blog Flux was created as the spiritual successor to the Eatonweb Portal. The Portal, in its heyday, had been the best blog directory - lots of information, and a whole lot of user reviews. Unfortunately, as the site grew, the original webmaster was unable to keep the site up and running properly.
So we came into the picture. As we worked on the site, our original vision grew larger and larger. To that end we decided that the scope of the site required a fresh start. Due to our agreement with the previous owner, the www. site would always be blank. As such, BlogFlux.com was created. Blog Flux aims to be a portal from which all your blogging needs can be handled - directory, button maker, and l...

Thanks to the Commenters
2008-03-17 19:23:00
Always thank the people that leave comments on your blog. They do not have to do it (unless you've paid them). They have plenty of other things to be doing at the time they are leaving you a comment, like wash dishes, wash clothes, put kids to bed, or one of a million other things that we in today's world have to do. If the person took the time to leave you a comment, continuing the conversation, the least you can do is thank them for it.
One of the reasons for writing a blog is to build relationships. You want to build relationships with others interested in the same subjects. Think about the interactions you have with your actual friends (especially the ones in the same industry). You bounce ideas off each other, call each other for help, have something to talk about when out for drinks, and you have someone who understands what you have to deal with on a daily basis. I would say that you should build relationships through blogging ...

50 of the SEO Blogs I follow
2008-03-15 11:17:00
Actually, I have never counted the number of SEO blogs that I follow, but the number seems to increase daily and I know it is over 50. 50 was the first number that came to mind for the title. Regardless, I just wanted to give credit where credit is due and highlight some of the SEO blogs I follow. In the interest of time, let me tell you about 5 of the SEO blogs that I follow (in no particular order):
www.seobook.com
www.shoemoney.com
www.bigoakinc.com
www.mattcutts.com
www.seomoz.org
The reason I do this is my thirst for knowledge. I have always been one to do methodical research into a subject that I wanted to know about, but the list of blogs, posts, and web sites that I want to read seems to be far greater than the amount of available time. I am using a Firefox plugin called BookStack to keep track of everything, which seems to be working out pretty well, but I still can't seem to catch up.
