| Natasja died in a car accident (1974-2007) |

Danish dancehall artist Natasja Saad died yesterday at the age of 32. She was involved in a car crash in Jamaica at 2 PM danish time, Sunday. There were 5 passengers in the vehicle when the driver lost control of the of the steering and crashed the car. Natasja died shortly after the accident. Among the passengers were also Natasja´s best friend Karen Mukupa, with whom Natasja started her career with in the all-girl group No Name Requested in the early nineties. Karen Mukupa did not receive any serious injuries in the accident.
Summer 2006 saw Natasja win Irie FM’s influential “Big Break” contest in Jamaica! 700 contestants, 12 finalists — but only one winner! NATASJA. She’s the first non-Jamaican ever to win the contest, and the exposure she is getting over there is tremendous!

Last week, the advocates of the campaign trumpeted what they claim to be a major breakthrough in their campaign when they got three major reggae artistes, Sizzla, Capleton and Beenie Man to sign the Reggae Compassionate Act.
The act, touted as being of historic importance to the gay community, effectively announces that “reggae artistes renounced homophobia, and hailed the deal as “this commitment is a major blow against homophobia in the Caribbean and in popular music”. The artistes have also been subjected to an avalanche of criticism.

Popular Jamaican musician Leroy ‘Roy’ Richards died on Friday at his St Ann’s Bay home.
The pioneer, born in 1941, has contributed much to the Jamaican music industry being a multi-talented artist who not only played the harmonica but was an accomplished singer and drummer. After getting his big break on the Vere Johns Opportunity Hour Talent Series - a weekly show stagged at various theatres across the island in the late 1950s - he was introduced to the recording industry by the late Sir Coxsone Dodd of Studio One.
However in later years he served as a part of music legend Bryon Lee’s backing band. He has also worked with a number of female acts including Enid Cumberland (from the duo Keith & Enid). His well known tracks include Veitnam and Contact on harmonica and Freedoms Blues.

Hugh Mundell was born in 1962 in Kingston, JA. His first break came when he was hired as a DJ for Augustus Pablo’s Rockers sound system where he has been working under the DJ AKA Jah Levi. His debut single, “Africa Must Be Free,” was released in early 1975 when he was 13 years old. Actually, his very first single was Where Is Natty Dread? for Joe Gibbs but this single was never released. His first and most famous album was Africa must be free by 1983. Hugh Mundell was shot in 1983 in a car when he was travelling with Junior Reid. Some sources say that he was murdered over an argument about a fridge, others say it was revenge. He was 21 yo.

Radio pioneer Barrington ‘Barry G’ Gordon has recently suffered a severe stroke and is at present hospitalised in Florida.
In a telephone interview with The Gleaner, a very shaky-sounding Barry G told how happy he was to be alive. “I was on a flight from Montego Bay to Florida; when I was airborne I wanted to use the bathroom and when I got up I felt like I was stumbling - my wife had to assist me. Since then it has been downhill, I had to be wheelchaired off the plane and taken straight to the hospital,” he said.
