The Sound LA - 100.3
2008-06-09 17:42:00
I just stumbled upon this station one day when I forgot my iPod and couldn't find anything on the radio. It isn't the best station ever by any means, but it is definitely different from the usual suspects we have to listen to these days. The first time I listened I heard Death Cab for Cutie followed by Fleetwood Mac. I've also heard Vampire Weekend followed by Neil Young. Quite the mix - here's a snapshot of a playlist from their website:1:02pm - Hope by Jack Johnson1:06pm - Under The Milky Way by The Church1:11pm - Old Man Down The Road by John Fogerty1:14pm - You're All I Have by Snow Patrol1:19pm - Runaway Train by Soul Asylum1:23pm - You're All I've Got Tonight by Cars1:27pm - Come On Get Higher by Matt Nathanson1:31pm - Lightning Crashes by Live1:36pm - Lost In The Supermarket by The ...

Big Drill Car reunites!
2008-05-26 13:08:00
And not only that, they are also playing with Supernova!Of course, I am against all reunion shows on general principle, but still, Fitzgerald's is barely 5 minutes away and it would be cool to see them there......

Nick Cave - Heineken Music Hall
2008-05-08 18:09:00
I just got back from Amsterdam! It was my first time seeing him and was easily one of the best concerts I have ever seen. He played almost the whole new album. - Dig, Lazarus, Dig! - Today's Lesson - Night Of The Lotus Eaters - We Call Upon The Author - Lie Down Here (& Be My Girl) - Jesus Of The Moon - Midnight Man - More News From NowhereI would have liked to here Albert Goes West instead of a couple of those songs but oh well...He also played. ...

New Barry Adamson Album out
2008-04-21 12:02:00
Barry Adamson's newest album Back to the Cat is out now. I downloaded mine this weekend and it is a damn fine piece of work. You can hear a sample on his Myspace page. The album is kind of a mix of all his styles so far. Some jazz-noir, some funky soul, some movie soundtrack sounding songs, and a little bit of everything else. I also found this little video on youtube - Barry and Nick Cave performing together:...

A bit of this, a bit of that
2008-04-20 15:13:00
Been a while I know but some new stuff out there thought you all may dig...Another Swedish import... Miss Li has some of the catchiest tunes out there. Her influences are many and her sound is unique. Check out some videos and streaming audio on her MySpace page. Don't listen to Oh Boy unless you want it in your head for the next 5-6 WEEKS. Playing at the HOB Los Angeles on April 28.Also from across the pond is Frank Turner. Some really funny, bitter and intelligent songs from this Englishman. If I had to compare I would say he's similar to Steve Poltz in song composition but his view of love and life is even more askew. Askewer? Kabobs? I digress. Check out some videos and streaming audio on his MySpace page. The Ballad of Me and My Friends is probably one of my faves. Playing...

Good Nick Cave interview
2008-04-01 13:05:00
Pitchfork InterviewCheck it out. A good interview with Nick about the new album, Grinderman, being inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame, and more. Nick Cave: Yes, that's another thing that's happened because of Grinderman. Grinderman embraced a lot of that stuff. Maybe it had something to do with Blixa [Bargeld] leaving the Bad Seeds too, I don't know. Blixa had an absolute disdain for anything like that, anything that was kind of conventional in terms of rock and roll. His whole approach to music was just different from that. With Blixa leaving, I think that Warren moved forward a little bit more. And he loves rock and roll, although he approaches it in a unique way as well. I think that came out in Grinderman, and ...

Demons
2008-03-27 21:20:00
Check these guys out - Demons.http://www.myspace.com/demonssthlmI got most of their cd's...I think. Their hard as hell to find. They just released a new EP "Her Name Was Tragedy." You can check it on their myspace page. It sounds really, really good. It's too bad I have no idea where to pick it up from....

Probably not, but it is Hanging Ten in East Berlin, so the fact they even made a video has to be worth something!...

So here's what's coming up that y'all might be interested in checking out.Slim Cessna's new album, Cipher, is coming out on March 25th. You can download a couple of songs from their website here. From what I've heard, it's vintage Slim Cessna, which means it is damn good! The Rocket from the Crypt R.I.P. CD/DVD is out and available. I ordered mine yesterday and am anxiously waiting it's arrival. The Night Marchers release has been moved back to April 22nd, but keep your eyes out for them because they are touring. And of course, if you haven't bought it, or ordered it, there is Dig, Lazarus, Dig! I got my copy and it is a must have. Many reviews are already calling it the album of 2008, which ain't bad considering it is only March....

Rainy Day Playlist
2008-01-25 14:58:00
I recently came across an old mix CD called very creatively The Rainy Day CD. I let Iron Balls borrow and it and he gave it 5 razors blades to the wrists! Good stuff. So I put together a new playlist on my iTunes, called just as creatively - The Rainy Day Playlist. Check it out:Lord Have Mercy - Alabama 3 Following - The Bangles The Vibes Ain't - Nothing But The Vibes Barry Adamson The Golden Age - Beck Paper Tiger - Beck Lonesome Tears - Beck Lost Cause - Beck Let Me Down Easy - Bettye LaVette The High Road - Bettye LaVette Before the Money Came (The Battle of Bettye LaVette)- Bettye LaVette Jealousy - Bettye LaVette Talking Old Soldiers - Bettye LaVetteShe Talks To Angels - The Black Crowes Don't Go - Cadillac Tramps(Carry My Soul To) The River - Cadi...

Hear the first song from Dig, Lazarus, Dig!
2008-01-02 14:57:00
Thanks to our international news reporter from the Great White North, Big O, for letting me know you can now check out the newest Nick Cave at www.nickcaveandthebadseeds.com. It's a catchy ass tune that you'll be humming a while after hearing it.Nick Cave on DIG, LAZARUS, DIG!!!:"Ever since I can remember hearing the Lazarus story, when I was a kid, you know, back in church, I was disturbed and worried by it. Traumatized, actually. We are all, of course, in awe of the greatest of Christ's miracles - raising a man from the dead - but I couldn't help but wonder how Lazarus felt about it. As a child it gave me the creeps, to be honest. I've taken Lazarus and stuck him in New York City, in order to give the song, a hip, contemporary feel. I was also thinking abo...

John Reis
2007-12-15 20:04:00
From Punknews.org:John Reis, the mastermind behind Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Rocket From the Crypt and Swami Records will be releasing his new album on March 25, 2008. The band is not yet named, but will include Gar Wood (Hot Snakes, Beehive & the Barracudas), Jason Kourkounis (Hot Snakes, Mule, Delta 72), and Montreal export, Tommy Kitsos (CPC Gangbangs). The Solution
2007-12-04 19:21:00
I found this cd used recently - The Solution- Communicate! It's really different from what I normally listen to but I've started really liking it. It's Scott Morgan (Sonic's Rendezvous Band) and Nicke Andersson (Hellacopters) together on one album. "I Have To Quit You""My Mojo Ain't Working No More"...

Heartless Bastards
2007-12-04 14:53:00
If for no other reason you have to like them for their name--especially because the singer is a chick, Erika Wennerstrom. One thing for sure, she has a very unique voice.Still trying to decide how much I like them. Some of the stuff borders too poppy for my taste, but I definitely appreciate the breadth of their style. Chech 'em out.New Resolution from the Stairs and Elevators album....

The best Nick Cave dancing videos
2007-11-27 17:50:00
Stagger Lee set the standard. With the pink shirt, the smooth moves, and the oh so groovy all male dancers. A classic! Although Nick doesn't treat us with any dances of his own, the booty shaking dancers more than make up for it in Bring it On!And finally, the 15 minute barnstormer than needs to be broken up into two separate videos - Babe I'm On Fire. Worth watching for the cheesy acting and the spastic dancing.Bonus video - per Iron Balls suggestion: 15ft of Pure White Snow...

How Indie 103 Rocks
2007-11-17 13:18:00
So a couple of days ago I'm listening to KROQ on the way to work and their tag line of "Today's New Rock" was followed by Rage Against the Machine's "Bullet in the Head." I have nothing against Rage Against the Machine but that song is anything but new. It's 13 years old. This got me to thinking why I prefer Indie 103 to any other commercial station out there. Sure, they play Rage. But, they don't advertise themselves as "Today's New Rock." They play a pretty good mix of alternative music, the DJs don't try to be 20 something hipsters, and the shows they sponsor are pretty good. So, here's my Top 5 reasons how Indie 103 rocks.1. Steve Jones in the afternoon. I hate this DJ. He goes on about nothing for two hours everyday then gets half a show repl...

Scott H. Biram
2007-11-09 12:04:00
I've only known about this guy for about 15 minutes now, and I've only heard 3 songs from him, but I dug the shit out of all 3 of them! In the vein of guys like Bob Log III and Mark Sultan/BBQ, Scott Biram is a one man band, but without the other guys' cheesiness. More of a southern, cowpunk, style with some Mojo Nixon thrown in for good measure. Don't believe me, check him out for yourselves:Been Down Too Long MP3No Way MP3Whiskey MP3Read more about him here - Bloodshot Records...

Day of the (mostly) Dead- 10 Covers
2007-11-03 00:03:00
Covers of songs by the dead or songs covered by the dead, or almost:10. Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann. Originally written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen. Manfred Man achieved the ultimate in cover songs: they made it there own. No one knows Springsteen's version, nor should they. BTW, it's 'wrapped up like a DEUCE.' It also finally set them free from that God damned "Do Wah Ditty" bullshit.9. Wonderwall by Paul Anka Originally written by Noel Gallagher and recorded by Oasis. Paul Anka added horns and smoothness to a song that is rough around the edges and made it almost fun. Especially interesting as it's about love, what is and what can or should be but the inability to do anything. Check out the lyrics and you can see why this song has been covered by Foo Fighters, ...

It's Halloween And That Means...
2007-10-31 00:15:00
...Oingo Boingo.WTF, you say. Yeah that's right, before RFTC, there was Oingo (mutha fukin) Boingo bitchs. Here is a post in honor of the legendary annual Halloween concerts that Oingo would perform...Say what you will but Danny Elfman is a musical phenomenon. Scary Music
2007-10-30 11:52:00
Since it is Halloween time, I thought some scary music would be apropos. Yes, I just used apropos in a sentence, and I even spelled it right the first time. That's just how I roll. Anyway, we might as well start things off with the scariest band in the world - Deadbolt!Having seen Deadbolt too many times to remember, I have to say they are damn scary! I assume they are still playing, but I haven't seen them since Rocket from the Crypt's last show. But no matter what, this is some damn scary stuff right here:Vodoobilly Man - MP3Next we have The Horrors!I don't know a whole lot about these guys, just that they are like a mix of The Damned, Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, and The Misfits (the good Misfits, not the new Misfits). It ...

Drive-By Truckers
2007-10-26 17:35:00
Thanks to Dr. Jones, I recently got to hear these guys and I gotta say I'm pissed off I've missed out on them for so damn long! I can't stop listening to them. I thought from the name they would be kinda cheesy, but they are definitely legit. If you like Steve Earle, Uncle Tupelo, Skynard (but in a good way), North Mississippi All-Stars, etc. you will dig these guys. Some of it flat out rocks, some is more laid back acoustic, and some is straight ahead country. But not a Toby Keith type crap country.Check 'em out:Putting People on the Moon - MP3...

Great Lake Swimmers
2007-10-14 14:42:00
In my opinion, these guys are quite good. They are a 4-piece from Toronto, Canada. Don't let that dissuade you. I heard about these guys about a year ago from a co-worker. She gave me a cd of some of their songs and I lost it. I recently heard them again on Sirius and then legally purchased all of their Mp3s. They've been signed to Nettwerk. Haven't heard about Nettwerk in some time, but I remember they had Skinny Puppy and Guster. The new record from Great Lake Swimmers is entitled Ongiara. You might like if you're into Neil Young (ballads), My Morning Jacket, Iron and Wine.Great Lake Swimmers (song samples on MySpace)Not you're cup of tea? Check out a new punk band from England call Gallows. They are now on Epitaph, so you can check them out here....

New song from Speedo!
2007-10-09 13:39:00
The guys over at Swami Records message board have uploaded a new demo from Speedo of Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Sultans, etc. fame. Check it out here. I've only given it one listen so far and it ain't half bad. A little repetitive near the end, but so was Glazed the first time I heard it....
