Guitar Major Scale Soloing (Free Online Lesson)
2008-05-15 19:05:43
So you're searching for information on guitar major scale soloing as a free online lesson. Let's just jump in. Here's how you do it on electric or acoustic, whether a Fender or Gibson, or 12-string guitar or 6 string. Let's say you're playing off the G Major Scale from the 3rd position on your neck. That's G A B C D E F#. In order to solo with this scale, you have to understand what chords you can play with. All together there are only 6 (rock) chords you can use. G Major, A Minor, B Minor, C Major, D Major, and E Minor. Here's why. Because this is the formula for chords in the key of G as well as the general theory behind figuring out what chords will harmonize with what major scale. Upper case roman numerals stand for major chords and lower case letters for minor chords. Here's the formula I'm talking about: I ii iii IV V vi viimb5 In the case of G Major... I = G Major Chord ii = A Minor Chord ii = B Minor Chord IV = C Major Chord V = D Major Chord vi = E Minor Chord viimb5 = ...

Why Some Guitarists Can Play Amazing Speed Guitar
2008-05-15 18:03:32
Haven't you wondered why some guitarists can play amazing speed guitar and others can't? It's simple. The ones who haven't either 1) Lacked motivation and enthusiasm to practice their instrument, 2) Were never taught the right methods for getting quick fingers, or 3) Doubted they could never do it so much that they never improved. Don't let any of those 3 be you! The reason why some guitarists can play amazing speed guitar is because of luck. You heard me, 100% luck is the answer. They were lucky enough to find that right guitar teacher, or lucky enough to be inspired by a certain guitarist, or lucky enough to have family members who have achieved great things (had the right mentality)....

3 Excercises to Increase Finger Speed on Guitar
2008-05-15 15:32:34
Exercise to increase finger speed on guitar #1 - Practice your 5 pentatonic modes and 7 diatonic modes by playing all hammer-ons and pull-offs ascending and descending. Exercise #2 - Play your 3-note-per-string major or minor scale. On each string, hammer-on and pull-off until you've played a total of 7 notes. For example, let's take the G Major Scale starting from the 3rd position on the 6th string. You'll play on the 6th string alone, G A B A G A B. For the 5th string, you'd play C D E D C D E. Exercise #3 - Practice hammer-ons off your E Minor Pentatonic Scale. Starting from the 12th fret, 6th string, you play E G E G. Both hammer-ons... On string 5 play A B A B. And so on. If you do all 3 of these, then your finger speed will increase like crazy!...

7 Modes For Electric Guitar
2008-05-14 18:50:47
The 7 diatonic modes for electric guitar include: Ionian Dorian Phrygian Lydian Mixolydian Aeolean Locrian All Greek names. Don't let it confuse you though! The concept is simple. You're playing the same notes of the major scale starting from a different note in the set. That's really all there is to it. I think guitarists like to pretend modes are more than what they actually are. They're just the same intervals as the diatonic scale, just starting from a different interval. Let's take the C scale. C D E F G A B Starting from... C we get C Ionian (or also known as the C Major Scale) D we get D Dorian E we get E Phrygian F we get F Lydian G we get G Mixolydian A we get A Aeolean (or also known as the A Minor Scale) B we get B Locrian Not actually that hard to understand after all right? Playing modes on your electric guitar is as simple as that. Just start your major scale from different notes. Now, there are 7 different scale shapes you can use to play all over the neck of your...

Major Pentatonic On Guitar
2008-05-14 18:43:54
If you want to play your major pentatonic on your guitar, then this is all you do. No doubt you know your minor pentatonic scale. Probably in Am. This is the first scale taught by tons of teachers. To play your major pentatonic, simply start on the second note of your minor pentatonic. For example, play your Am pent... starting from the second note, C. Instead of A, C, D, E, G... You play C, D, E, G, A. Same notes from a different starting point. Nothing more to say! Except if you learn all 5 modes of the pentatonic scale, then you can learn major pentatonic on guitar in its proper position....

How to Get Blazing Speed On Guitar
2008-05-14 15:19:54
If you want blazing speed on your guitar, then listen up! There's only one way to do it... Hardnosed, grueling work at least practicing 8 hours per day. That's a joke of course! If you want to sacrifice all your time you could be spending with loved ones and friends or doing something else, then that's all you. Getting quick fingers on guitar doesn't take all that much. I could set my electric aside for months, then pick it up and rip fast runs and solos. Because the type of quickness you get isn't the type the progressive rockers or jazzers are using. In those cases, yeah, you pretty much have to be a hermit guitarist to achieve any level of skill. Trust me... There were only a couple talented guitarists in this world. One is Jason Becker and the other was Jimi Hendrix. For the rest of us, it's just a matter of being enthusiastic and inspired enough to get fast! Well, that and having the right teachings at your fingertips. That's really all it takes. A long time ago I didn'...

2 Guitar Scales To Learn If You Want To Rock!
2008-05-13 21:08:34
The two guitar scales to learn if you want to rock out on your guitar are without a doubt the pentatonic scale and diatonic scale. Especially if you want to play with guitar speed! Why learn them? Because these are the scales primarily used to create melodies and solos in rock songs. If you can get a grasp on these scales along all 22+ frets of your guitar, then you should have the freedom to play lead guitar. If you learn these scales, then you can play some rock guitar. You must learn the minor and major pentatonic scales along with the 5 modes. You must also learn the major and minor diatonic scales along with the 7 modes. The pentatonic scale is a 5-note scale and that's why it has 5 modes. The diatonic scale has 7 notes and that's why there are 7 modes. Modes simply mean starting the scale from a different note. For instance, if you start the A Minor Pentatonic Scale from the second note then you're playing the C Ionian Pentatonic Mode. Even though the notes are the same as if you...

How to Learn Guitar Scales
2008-05-13 21:07:45
So you want to know how to learn guitar scales so you can solo all over the neck of your guitar. With scales you can play great melodies or just plain raw guitar speed. By the end of this short article, you'll know what you need to do to learn the guitar scales you need for lead guitar. Read on to find out the secrets of the pros. Tip #1: Practice guitar scales both with alternate picking and hammer-ons and pull-offs. This way you'll be armed when it comes to both shredding and playing in legato style. Don't just practice picking and don't just practice with legato (smooth and connected). Do both. Tip #2: One of the best ways to learn your guitar scales is by practicing them very, very slowly. You see, your mind records your finger movements. When you play fast and you don't know how to do it yet, you make a lot of mistakes. Your mind records these and you learn very slowly. So the key is to practice them with rhythm but very slowly so your mind records the movements properly. Later yo...

Easy Guitar Lead You Can Play Instantly!
2008-05-13 21:06:06
While you won't play with much guitar speed... If you're looking for easy guitar lead you can learn in a short amount of time, check out the tabs for these 3 songs: Lead #1: Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has an easy solo during the end off the F Minor Pentatonic Scale. Solo requires some bending and off-beat notes. Great for the beginner! As said, you'll also be playing off the F Minor Pentatonic Scale, so you'll be getting used to those notes. You actually move into diatonics a bit too. Lead #2: Believe it or not, Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" has an easy to learn guitar solo. Not all that easy to play up to speed at first, but it's real good practice for learning how to solo rock and blues. Don't believe me? Give it a shot. It's a lot of hammer-ons, pull-offs, and bending with the Pentatonic Scale. That's really all you're up against. Lead #3: Pick any Tom Petty song. From "Free Fallin'" to "I Won't Back Down," you'll find some easy guitar solos you can play....

Guitar Speed
2008-05-10 22:45:04
You're reading this because you want guitar speed. Maybe you want to play more intense music. Maybe you just want the praise from band mates, friends, family, and the chicks. And by the end of this article, I promise you'll know what you need to do to get blazing fast on your instrument in a short amount of time. Even if you believe you can't get there and you've tried it all. This isn't another piece of common advice. I'm talking rocking, rip-roaring notes flying from your fingertips like a baseball card hitting the spokes of a bike. This is something little known about being a monster musician. I'm talking about a type of speed you can attain even if you practice less than an hour a day. And it's still impressive. What I'm talking about is legato. Legato means smooth and connected. It's basically playing all hammer-ons and pull-offs. Most guitarists know how to play legato style on the pentatonic scales and a little on the 3-note-per-string diatonic scales. The result is mo...

Solo Scale Guitar Tips For You
2008-04-29 18:37:59
You can't really solo unless you know your scales. That's one huge factor. In fact, most guitarists just play off scales alone and never even try to explore “outside of the box.” That's why I wrote these solo scale guitar tips. For Rock, you have to learn: Your penatonic scales (minor and major) Your diatonic scales (minor and major) If you play Metal, you have to learn: Your harmonic minor scale If you play Classical or Jazz, you have to learn: All scales short of exotic. ...

A Free Guitar Solo Lesson For You
2008-04-29 09:25:30
Two roads to guitar soloing: You can either learn little tricks and scales here and there ... or you can crack down and study like crazy. Here's a free guitar solo lesson designed to help you process everything you're learning. I used to be type #1. I'd learn little guitar tricks here and there. Not that that was a waste of time... but that can only take you so far. You have to understand what's going on beneath the licks, runs, techniques... Where I'm getting at is if you want to play your own great guitar solos, you need to learn what's going on beneath the surface. If you just want to play other solos, that's fine too! Either way ... where I'm getting at is you're going to need to understand music intellectually so you can apply it emotionally and physically. Guitar soloing is made up of three things: 1)Mind (Mental Understanding Of Music) 2)Body (Physical Abilities Developed To Solo Like a Mad Man) 3)Spirit (Emotional Awareness of What You're Playing) Only with all three elem...

Fast Guitar (Not Shredding) Solo
2008-04-28 08:32:38
So you're not really into the shredding solos thing. Yeah, me neither. What you want is the smooth and connected sounding solo. The type you don't have to slave over to learn. The fun type. The type that's intense, but not so in-your-face that you get a massive headache from all the chops! You must be looking for Legato. Shredders bash legato players. That's okay. It's no wonder that there's hardly any shredding on the radio. Because when it's misused, it sounds like garbage. And annoying... Okay, so you want to learn a not shredding solo. Or at least something cool you can rip up and down on that axe. Well, you've come to the right place!...

1 Guitar Solo Tip and 1 Trick
2008-04-27 20:04:38
Here's your guitar solo tip. This is actually a secret to playing that I shouldn't be telling you in public! Because this is actually the key ingredient behind hit songs and all great solos. The omega of guitar soloing secrets... What am I talking about? CONTRAST Contrast is the key to likable music in general. In soloing you need to contrast your tone. Contrast your techniques. Contrast note values. Contrast smooth and rough. Contrast keys. Think about the contrast in music. Those points where there's a sudden transition in contrast... Those are the points that make the hairs stand up on your neck! Now for your guitar solo trick... This trick makes average guitarists look like guitar gods. Only the best guitarists know that you're basically “cheating” your way into seeming like a badass. That is... You must learn legato techniques for 3-note-per-string scales and your pentatonic scale. I can't show you this tip in one article, so you'll need to give me your name and e-...

Free Lesson – How to Play Lead Guitar
2008-04-27 19:52:24
So you want to learn how to play lead guitar. There's a lot of elements involved that it can be overwhelming! One thing you need to know is how to play your minor pentatonic scale. You can't really get anywhere if you can't do that. You need to learn how to play hammer-ons, pull-offs, bend strings, vibrato... And other techniques. You need to learn solos, riffs, and other lead guitar parts of other songs and model them. This is where you'll pick up a lot of techniques. You'll also develop your style. If you want to be great, you have to learn all your modes of your diatonic scale and pentatonic scale. That's 7 modes for diatonic and 5 for pentatonic. And you need to know how to cut across your fretboard using the modes. If you want to learn how to play lead guitar, you need to learn the difference between legato and shredding. You have to memorize all the notes on your fretboard. You must understand music theory so that you can logically know your note choices up against grou...

Why Can't I Play Guitar Fast?
2008-04-25 19:01:35
Almost every guitarist I meet wants to know “Why can't I play guitar fast?” My answer is usually this little story... How I went from a guitar wimp to a speed demon. I played for 6-some years before I could even play fast guitar solos or scales quickly. I had a bag of tricks and when they ran out, everyone would notice I had a giant hole in my musicianship! I tried gaining speed using a ton of different methods. I bought video after video. I never seemed to make any real progress! Just ended up frustrated all the time! Maybe it was lack of focus and discipline, I don't know. I never liked looking at guitar as if I needed to study it like I was in college or something. I'm all about having some fun. I wanted to play guitar fast right away. I didn't want to wait for it and I didn't want to slave over riffs, runs, and solos... chop building, working with a metronome... It all stinks because it's too much work and too dang frustrating when you see the crummy results of 8 hou...

My Informative and Raving Review of Guitar Tricks
2008-04-24 16:32:30
Hi ATOMIC fans. I've been part of Guitar Tricks Online Lessons for almost a week now. I'm so blown away by the original style/content of these lessons that I've decided to start recommending it at ATOMIC and write a thorough review of what's inside. First off, I want to say that I don't normally invest in online guitar lessons. Not to sound full of myself at all, but there aren't many online lessons out there that would teach me something I don't already know. When I came across Guitar Tricks, I thought the teachers wouldn't be near my level, but they're actually much better than I. That's why I decided to join (because the instructors are for real), because of that and several other reasons I'm going to talk about. One biggie is that everything I've learned from Guitar Tricks has been useful, not the same old useless guitar lessons. While you can click on areas for learning scales, chords, modes, and theory,... the videos (along with tablatures, notation, and mp3s) teach you ho...

It's good to be a geek It's good to be unknown It's good I'm never waiting right beside the telephone Cuz no one ever... I play dungeons and dragons I got a 13th level halfling fighter thief got seven hit die on my backstab sometimes you know it's good to be a geek. It's good to be a geek It's good to play the freak It's good to comb my mullet once every other week As far as I can see It's good to play the Wii Then stay up painting miniatures t...

Indie Rock Roots Guitar Jam
2008-02-20 20:28:44
Hey ATOMIC fans. Here's my first post since last December. I'm starting to get a little itch to get back and rock out with you on this blog. I recorded this jam the other day when I was getting back to some of my Indie Rock roots. What I mean is just playing experimental but melodic guitar. Kind of like with a creative edge. I don't know if you'll dig it or not. Can't put my finger on what it sounds like or what bands influenced it, so I just called it "Indie Rock Roots." Play mp3...

Speed Soloing Off the 7 Modes and 2 Strings Lesson
2007-12-10 14:45:24
Here's another video for you ATOMIC fans. A lot better picture quality. Let me know if you have trouble with this lesson since there are no tabs. I slowed down the sequence a lot so you can slowly see everything I'm playing. My only concern is for those of you who don't already know your 7 Modes of your Major Scale....

3-Note-Per-String Pentatonic Speed Riff Lesson
2007-12-09 21:46:35
Check out this 3-note-per-string Pentatonic speed riff in Em, ATOMIC fans. Make sure to warm up properly before attempting to play this one, especially if you'll be playing it in the lower register. You might be able to pull it off from the 5th position, but be aware that you could be injured. So play at your own risk. By the way, I play this all legato, all hammer-ons and pull-offs. No, I'm not Paul Gilbert or anything. He's awesome, but I'm too lazy to play like him... To tell you the truth, come to think of it, this is actually something along the lines that gilbert would play as legato. He'll shred it if he wants to give you a concussion. Also BTW, better lighting to come... I'll get better at this guitar vlogging thing....

2007 New Rock Radio was So Uninspiring
2007-11-26 14:24:34
Haven't done this in a while, ATOMIC fans. It's time to lay down the law with a post thrashing and bashing bands. This time 2007 New Rock radio bands might want to take cover. How much of popular New Rock was inspiring looking back on this year? A few that come to mind that did make we want to groove or jam on my guitar were Modest Mouse, the White Stripes, Tool, Avenged Sevenfold, the Bravery, Jet, and I actually like that new Silversun Pickups group. Any good ones to add? I know I'm leaving out some others. Some of the uninspiring groups on the radio in 2007 (along with my ruthless cutdowns) were: Jimmy Eat World: Weezer wannabees. Red Jumpsuit Apparatus: Cheesy. Incubus: Need to take a time machine back to the 60s, so an acid head might be able to tell what the lead singer's talking about. Linkin Park: “I want to be a screaming and rapping Bono.” Three Days Grace: Just not inspiring. Flyleaf: Get some medicine. Puscifer: Post Modern Rock gone awry. Daughtry: Talent doe...

Don't Try this at Home Guitar Jam
2007-11-24 17:09:09
Hey ATOMIC fans. Today I made a recording using some legato speed soloing exercises from my two free method ebooks. A guitarist should never use speed in this way throughout an entire song or jam, annoying your listeners or bandmates. That's why I'm calling this guitar jam, "Don't Try this at Home." Play MP3...

Am I picking my guitar strings too hard?
2007-11-23 17:34:08
ATOMIC fans, the first few years I played guitar I remember other guitarists telling me that I picked my strings too hard. I really used to lace into them when playing anything. For a long period of time I thought you shouldn't pick your strings hard. Then one day I was doing some research on jazz legend Joe Pass. I had heard he was the best guitarist in history, so I went to see what he was all about. Come to find out Pass would lace into his strings so hard that he had a habit of breaking his picks. And he probably used, you know, those little heavy jazz picks. He picked harder than I ever did. As a child of the 90s I didn't even know what shredding was until 18-years-old. I began studying and listening to some shredders like Malmsteen and Batio (who I can't stand today,... so shoot me). I noticed the shredders were picking their strings abnormally hard. So to answer the question, “Am I picking my guitar strings too hard?” I think it all depends on what you're playing,...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Have fun playing guitar for your families and what not. Unfortunately for me I won't be seeing my family this year, having made a move out of state. Guitar Pentatonic Scale Secrets
2007-11-21 19:08:57
Hey ATOMIC fans. The guitar Pentatonic Scale (well, the scale on any instrument) is known as something along the lines of the “Father of Rock Scale” because it seems like every note you play within that scale sounds dead on, with no tension whatsoever. Although it's good to have control, it's also a blast to be reckless with the five-note scale. Perhaps what makes it even more “magical” is that you can, for instance, play the Em, Am, and Bm Pentatonic scales all in the key of Em. There are no conflicting notes. This gives the scale a modal feel in itself without even thinking of the 5 modes. I think a good term would be “harmonious versatility” (if I'm wanting to sound like a music professor or something). There are no secrets to guitar playing, but there are things that small percentages of musicians know. For one this includes playing fast full-neck runs with Pentatonics. A small fraction of guitarists have done this/do this. Most use diatonic seven-note scales ...

Download Guitar Lessons Free
