A Change Is Gonna Come
2008-06-28 23:55:50
Hi folks. Get ready, this blog is changing! The weekly mixes are time consuming for me which makes me an erratic poster and they don't give you anything else to read during the rest of the week... so I am going to change the way I do things round here.As of 03JUL2008 I will be posting a track a day, every day day. The bad news is... wait, there is no bad news, just a new track every day. The new post series will be called:The Daily DoseSo then, what's the plan of action?1) If you haven't already, sign up to the RSS feed (dead simple to do, if you're not great with IT try www.bloglines.com) or subscribe for email notifications (there's a button over there in the right hand column > ). Or just come by every day, I always have cookies. :)2) There will be a catch up post on 01JUL2008 for all t...

Mix - 03JUN08
2008-06-03 01:12:43
I'm back with (a lucky) 13 tracks that don't share a theme, they're just worth sharing. Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :)Track: Lykke Li - Dance, Dance, DanceTracknotes: Quirky, Swedish, coy. 'Words can never make up for what you do'.Track: The Nightwatchman - Until The EndTracknotes: The guy playing guitar for Rage Against The Machine actually does folk music. Go figure. It' truly delightful though. 'The only time we got, is right about now.' Bliss. Gravelly, growling glory.Track: Smile Empty Soul - Bottom Of A BottleTracknotes: Grunge-rock, hints of Nickelback and Staind in here. 'I do it for the love I get from the bottom of the bottle'.Track: Merril Bainbridge -...

Monday Mix #22
2008-04-28 16:40:53
Each Monday I'll be sharing (a lucky) 13 tracks that don't share a theme, they're just worth sharing. Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :)This week I have for you -Track: The Grass Roots - Midnight ConfessionsTracknotes: Only 9 bands have had more Billboard 100 hits than The Grass Roots, they were on the charts for 307 weeks straight between 1967-72. Yet just about no one's heard of them. Very odd. 'In my midnight confessions/When I'm telling the world I love you'.BUYTrack: Au Revoir Simone - A Violent Yet Flammable WorldTracknotes: A band I was recommended via Last.fm. So off I went to hunt them up and, yes, I like them. It's indie film soundtrack type music but a goo...

Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :)This week I have for you -Track: Crystal Castles - Black FagTracknotes: Welcome to Net Gen music gone instrumentally haywire. These kids have played far, far too many 'puter games. Canadian new rave electronica outfit that seem a little confused but entirely loveable. Very Daft Punk vs. Mario Bros.BUYTrack: Conjure One - SleepTracknotes: I found this by happy accident, it was the track playing on a new friend's blog. I used to be very into Conjure One, it reminded me to go and acquire their back catalogue which I lost somewhere along...

Rickmob: When Internet, Pop And Flashmobs Collide
2008-04-16 15:48:15
Argh. Meant to post this last week and have just found the link in my favourites list:That folks is 1000 or so people flashmobbing to sing Rick Astley songs. Rickrolling gone physical. Scary. The story about how Rickrolling got started is on his wikipedia page (along with an explanation of who he is).I imagine they might do it again at some point so here are the rules should you plan to attend:1. Find a spot in the main concourse area (not on the balconies), and make sure you're near to the arrivals/depatures board right in the centre of the station. We can look up at those and look like genuine commuters before we sing.1. There will be NO HORN! Please use the digital clock on the arrivals/departures board, and at exactly 6pm begin singing (the first line is of course 'We're no strangers t...

Each Monday I'll be sharing (a lucky) 13 tracks that don't share a theme, they're just worth sharing. Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :)This week I have for you -Track: Frank Turner - Romantic FatigueTracknotes: I was turned onto Frank's stuff back at the start of the year by Chris who kept recommending him to me. And I kept adding his name to bits of scrap paper and not getting round to searching his stuff out. Until one day I did. And then I started recommending to everyone I know. ::sigh:: Most annoying to have taken so long to catch on. He mixes very English sarcasm with a nice guitar melody and a wry sense of humour. I know you'll love him. And hopefully you'll ...

I'm sorry, life got in the way. Here's some tracks that I have been listening to while I've been busy doing battle with the moolygrubs. There'll be some newer stuff in the next mix but some of these might well be new to you so it's all good, right? :)This week I have for you -Track: Luke Doucet - One Too ManyTracknotes: I am loving this guy's style, this is the second track of his I have posted but he really is worth your attention. Snarky, sharp and a gorgeous voice. 'It takes a uniquely fucked up gu...

Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :)This week I have for you -Track: The Bees - (This Is For The) Better DaysTracknotes: I love the faint sixties tang that this indie pop track has about it. I can't put my finger on it but something is really making me feel chilled out when I play this. They're from the Isle of Wight so maybe they were sealed off from the outside world with nothing but old vinyls to keep them sane... 'And it's alright now/This is for the better days.'Track: Imperial Swing Orchestra - Come Out And PlayTracknotes: Neo-swing number sung from a cat's point...

Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) This week I have for you - Track: EMF - You're UnbelieveableTracknotes: From 1990 comes this classic alt-pop track. This is one of my favourite tracks to play on Monday mornings to force myself out of bed... 'The things you say/You're unbelieveable'.Track: Kristin Andreassen - Crayola Doesn't Make A Color For Your Eyes Tracknotes: This is just lovely, the right side of dopey and there's handclapping to go with the cute and funny lyrics. Oh and whistling. And yet this is not annoying. Hmmm. That's talented. 'Your passport say's they'...

This is the intro song and just makes me smile at its cute swishyness. It's a touch twee so if sentiment sends you scurrying, this ain't for you. Go and see the film, buy the awesome soundtrack if it is though. 'If I was a flower growing wild and free/All I'd want is for you to be my sweet honey bee.'Track: Michael Cera and Ellen Page - Anyone Else But YouTracknotes: Also from Juno (see above). It's such a good track though that it was really hard to not just keep raving about it. You need this wry, cute song in your life. Whether you have a Valentine or not. So, saw this a couple of weeks ago and Depp makes a devliish barber. :)Track: Sweeney Todd OST - A Little PriestTracknotes: Helena Bonham Carter has an excellent sense of humour/timing on this track from the film. I know the stage show is better but this is a very amusing number and I liked the film's version. 'With the price of meat/What it is/When you get it/If you get it/Good, you got it...' ...

I know it's an odd choice and not really typical of the style most of the time but it is just so lush and dreamy in it's floaty way that I can't help but adore it. If you don't think you like Aphex Twin then you're in for a treat, go on try it. If you like Client, Saint Etienne, Placebo I think you'll like this one too as it has elements of them all. 'I can find you/I own the city'.Track: Basia Bulat - Snakes And LaddersTracknotes: I'm a sucker for a soaring melody with a melancholic lyric. 'I've heard every word your mama says/She's right on all accounts but one/I'm right for you as rain.' ::swoon:: Oh yes. That works for me.Track: Ian Brown - Golden GazeTracknotes: I have to confess I never really liked The Stone Roses much but I like Brown's solo stuff. Very fast, very addictive. In 2001 I was playing this *a lot*. I still am. Which makes it worth sharing. :) 'Late at night and all alone/Late night traffic's constant drone/A voice comes on the telephone/Yeah late at night and all alone/It tells me quicken up, pick up the pace.'Track: The Magnetic Fields - Crazy For You (But Not That Crazy)Tracknotes: From their album 69 Love Songs...

06/01/08 - I Am Legend and the man who was
2008-01-06 04:14:07
So I went to see I Am Legend on 28/12/07 and have been meaning to post a couple of Bob Marlley tracks as a result ever since. In the film Will Smith thinks he is the last man alive on earth. He gets through the day with the love of a good dog and by playing a lot of Bob Marley which of course features heavily in the soundtrack (for more plot etc check the IMDB page). He also shares a couple of stories and reasons for being such a fan when he gets the chance to. It's not a bad movie but it's not great. Except. If it makes just a handful of new listeners find and love Marley's music then I am a very happy girl. I love Marley. I could post damn near every song he ever recorded and think of a reason why you should listen to it (though even I'll concede not all...

I love WSM. Try not to judge me. I'm reasonably smart otherwise. :)Anyways, I was scouting for TV listings for the show (it just finished last night and I am totally wowed by Mariusz Pudzianowski's 4th win) and I found this: The WSM Official Site which is currently advertising and allowing you to sample tracks from The World's Strongest Man Soundtrack... which includes the theme tune as well as tracks by Korn, Seether etc... there's a soundtrack I could never have imagined existed......

It's going to be track 2 on his first solo album This Town which is due for release on 22/01/08. Promises good things.Track: Various Artists - Requiem For A JerkTracknotes: Faultline/Brian Molko/Francoise Hardy tribute to Serge Gainsbourg. I really do recommend them all and would star them all if I was being pushy... On to the music - Track: The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes*** Tracknotes: Here in the UK they are the The Raconteurs but you may know them as The Saboteurs if you're from Australia. Copyright reasons or something. Whatever name they go by this is insanely good for singing along to in the car. Jaunty Irish love song with swoonworthy lyrics: 'I wish I was a fisherman/tumblin' on the seas/far away from dry land/and it's bitter memories/castin' out my sweet line/with abandonment and love/no ceiling bearin' down on me/save the starry sky above/with light in my head/with you in my arms... | You Should Know... Sneaker Pimps (And What Happened Next) |
2007-12-29 12:18:04
Why You Should Know Them: The Sneaker Pimps are coming back. There is a new album planned for a 2008 release. I have no idea what it might sound like, but I am excited. In their time they have sounded like Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, Morcheeba, Lamb, Garbage and Placebo. But it'll have been a six year gap between albums and it'll be interesting to see what they come up with. Chris Corner has been doing some erotic electronica in his solo project IAMX so I am waiting to see how much of that is going to be blended into the new stuff.Where They're From: Reading, England. They formed in the mid-nineties. The SPs have been through various incarnations. They started out as Chris Corner, Liam Howe and Kelli Dayton with Kelli on the vocals. The first album ...

Theme Post #5 - The Daily Grind
2007-12-29 11:01:43
This week's theme is the daily grind, songs inspired by that four letter word, 'Work'. Songs about hating it, surviving it and seeing it for what it is. There are many, many songs about work but here's a selection I like. Just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) Track: Butterfingers - I Love Work Tracknotes: It should come as no surprise that there is an Aussie song about 'loving' work... Only kidding. We know you're not workshy, just creative. :) 'Woke up this morning/A little too early/A little too tired/A little too surly' - sound familiar?Track: Dolly Parton - 9 - 5Tracknotes: 'Tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen/Pour myself a cup of ambition/And yawn and stretch and try to come to life...' | Five On Rotation |
2007-12-29 07:24:16
All very well surfacing but where's the music, I hear you say. Here are five that I have had on high rotation this week. Winter is definitely here now in the north of England so I am playing some nostalgia numbers...Track: Skunk Anansie - Cheap HonestyTracknotes: First sonething with teeth to start. Skin's voice is deliciously pure and grungy and hypnotic on this track. It showed up on shuffle at the start of last week and I have been seeking it out ever since.Track: Sunbear - FlutterbyeTracknotes: I know nothing about Sunbear, they've barely been scrobbled and I only vaguely remember they were Irish(?). This song is so dreamy and indie and loveable. Track: Ambulance Ltd - Stay TunedTracknotes: A song about being absent. :) The New York boys groove in a gently insistent way.Track: Buddy Ho...

Freaky Friday.... :)
2007-12-29 07:12:17
Friday and the weekend is here. I freaking love this song and have been listening to it on repeat on the way into work. Also it gave me a excuse for the post title. :)Track: Moist - Freaky Be BeautifulTracknotes: Canadian gothic delight from the 90s. One of my favourite songs when I am drunk, I am always hopeful that I will see it listed on a jukebox somewhere someday. 'I'm walking this railing's edge/Just to feel this good/And freaky be beautiful/You came following me/Like I knew you would'. Mmmmmm.Happy weekend, folks....

Simian Mobile Disco
2007-12-29 07:12:05
Hi guys, I'm coming at ya live from Barcelona. Yeah, sometimes working as an IT trainer can be a shade more interesting than regular 9-5. Before you start thinking I am spoilt though I would like to point out that I have spent the evening solidly working with only a very good bottle of wine and BBC World Service to help me through it. It's a bank holiday here and fireworks keep going off but I have held true and continued working. That's dedication for ya.Anyways, on to the music. These guys are playing the Cockpit in Leeds on Wednesday night (26/09/07). I was in an 'kin evil mood when I realised I'd miss them by being away for work. I am however obviously giving friends/Leeds locals enough heads up that they can go and enjoy. And I am getting the pleasure of sharing their work with anyone...

Theme Post #4 - Mashups
2007-12-29 06:03:30
I love mashups, I really appreciate them.Sometimes because they're funny. Sometimes because they bring something else to the table that I wasn't expecting. Sometimes because they make me re-listen to the original songs and hear something I missed. Sometimes because they sound like a musical trainwreck but you can't help but admire whatever twisted genius decided to do it anyway. There's no way I could write the definitive post on this theme as there are just so, so many mashups out there - please feel free to recommend your favourites in the comments. :)For now though, here are some I'd like to share. If you're in a rush make sure you grab the first track and the last two or scroll to the bottom of the post and grab the zip. :)Track: Star Wars vs. The Chemical Brothers - Galvanise The Empir...

You Should Know... Ephemera
2007-12-28 08:59:06
Why You Should Know Them: It seems odd writing an entry for a band that are so damn difficult to track and semm to have faded away for good but I sincerely believe that you should know about Ephemera. Their soaring vocals and blissful melodies combine to create something so pure that it is astonishing. Think The Cardigans meet Suzanne Vega and throw in a dash of Royksopp.Where They're From: Bergen in Norway. Christine Sandtorv, Inger Lise Storksen, and Jannicke Larsen started making music together in 1994 and released six albums between 1996 and 2004 (Glue (1996), Sun (2000), Balloons and Champagne (2001), Air (2003), Monolove (2004) and a collection of their tracks which had been used for films and adverts, Score (2004)) but seem to have done nothing since, their website is dead and despi...

You Should Know... Delays

Their second album, You See Colours, came out in 2006 and gave them exposure at festivals, Top Of The Pops and a couple of songs were used in TV ad campaigns in both the UK and ...

One Off Thursday Mix :)
2007-12-28 08:35:45
Guys, since I'm exhausted after working long, long days this week and only just got back to the UK I'm going to post a second random mix post instead of a theme post. I have listened to so much music this week while working that I have plenty I want to recommend... Theme posts will be back to normal next week I promise. Just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) So I have for you - Track: Danny Michel - White LightningTracknotes: A Canadian singer/songwriter who should, if the world was a fairer place, be rich and famous. I think the best description for this track is raw and yet slick, that's what you get with a voice like that singing snarky lyrics and old time piano playing.Track: Simon And Garfunkel - I Am A Rock...
