Why in the World Aren't Celebrity Musicians Blogging?
2007-09-14 20:48:00
In this post I'll examine the phenomenon that finds celebrity musicians unwilling to blog professionally and actively participate in social networking. The cost-benefit analysis finds such participation a win-win situation for the artist. Not only do instant fan connection opportunities exist but also direct revenue streams. The question becomes, “Why in the world aren't celebrity musicians blogging?"1. ill advisedThe fact remains that many celebrity musicians place full stock in their managers or publicists advice. With regards to blogging and social networking a manger does not see a direct 10% revenue cut. For this reason, many celebrity musician advisers care little about the blogosphere or social networking pla...

Music Biz Design Strategy Part II: Think Piece
2007-09-14 05:44:00
Yesterday's post left me wondering at the possibility of building one's own digital music box. Could a design strategy become a realistic endeavor for the individual musician? In this post, I'll flush out a think piece with regards to building a digital music box.1.Choose an artifact, a design.Remember the design object cannot simply appeal to novelty, plenty of these objects already exist. A design strategy must encompass the engaging and compelling atmosphere of the user experience. For example (and as a disclaimer: I am not a designer by trade!), many music aficionados know a thing or two about audio gear and particularly compressors. Imagine a digital music box fashioned after a vintage compressor.2.Create a music player (most likely an Mp3 player) and embed your music.3.Create linkage between the artifact and Mp3 player. The next step involves creating unique controls and functionality for the music player, thereby incorporating the artifact's intrinsic value.Such linkage between the music player and the artifact quantifies the engaging characteristic of the music box: imagine the user handling the compression controls in order to select tracks – higher compression selects over-compressed songs, broadly found in the industrial and hip-hop varieties – low compression chooses cleaner, natural-sounding songs, like jazz or folk – turning compression settings somewhere in the middle chooses classic rock or country music, genres that rely on compression yet don't necessarily use it to create bold sonic textures.4.Speakers This step engages the analog output of the music files with speakers and possibly a headphone output.5.PackagingPackaging involves another design issue altogether. Remember the way your iPod appeared in its package? A user's impression prior to fiddling with the device certainly plays a factor in selling your digital music box.Resources: Make the Minty Mp3 playerAVR Butterfly Mp3How To Use The STA013 MP3 Decoder ChipSpastic Mp3 PlayerMp3 player case galleryTrackball PlayerTechnology as ExperienceYesterday's Post:New Music Biz Might Find Opp In Design Strategy

New Music Biz Might Find Opp in Design Strategy
2007-09-13 01:32:00
The on-line digital music space spins out a confusing wash of revenue models, user rights, artist compensation sentimentality and digital rights management software. In a sense, the entire space resembles a crowded market, tided by consumers and vendors, many able to take, many unable to sell. After years of litigation and technological breakthrough, one wonders if a stable method for compensation transaction exists, at least within the on-line, intangible space. Consumers offer reason after reason to explain why file sharing and free downloading of audio files represents a completely fair and legal practice. No amount of litigious action and moral recital seemingly jolts the majority consumer into following an easy pay-to-play model. When I first read about Sony Corp.'s introduction of the Rolly, an egg-like mp3 player that flaps and dances to the tunes it plays, I stumbled to understand what motivated Sony executives to release this device into the marketplace. An egg doesn't fit well in one's pocket, not like the iPod Nano. An egg smells funny, at least subconsciously. An egg breaks. An egg is goofy. I read an interesting article, "The digital music box: using cultural and critical theory to inform design" written by Matt Blyth at the University of York, where the author discusses cultural and critical theory, the music industry and the consumer's steadfast unwillingness to purchase music despite potential lawsuit, and how these items influence design. According to the article, design becomes a central issue for the music industry, such that it might replace the litigious strategy. The article examines the result found by fusing the music industry problem through the design portal, surfacing with “digital music boxes”, digital music embedded in artifacts. As a backdrop the author explains a design object's role in branding one's identity. The author begs the reader to consider patches, buttons, posters, stickers, etc. and their associations with various sub-cultures found in youth-culture. Specifically, the author presents student sketches and 2 student final project designs. One student final project featured a “rotating bar which would pass back and forth through a base unit to select a particular album.” The bar would then be rotated in order to scroll through songs. The base unit would also feature a screen in order to “display video, song lyrics and other related media.”The second design featured a stress ball with the ability to choose soft music versus hard music based on the strength of the user's squeeze. The end-result would allow the user to replicate their emotion, fashioned by a squeeze, within the music medium. The author also notes that successful design objects ultimately create both novel and compelling user interactions with the music they embed. One sketch included playing The Beatles' catalog via a yellow submarine design box but was rejected because it only provided novelty. However the same student created a Paul McCartney Hofner bass design which allowed the user to play strings and tune pegs in order to select tracks and transform the EQ spectrum, thus creating a novel interaction and also a compelling one. The author writes at the end of the paper that the music industry must seek new strategy to “enchant and not coerce.”When I re-think Sony's Mp3-player design with regard to this paper, I begin to wonder whether Sony can expect to strike gold with the device. Perhaps the egg shape needed more critical thinking before its release but at least it begins rolling the music industry towards embracing a design strategy. Imagine a cheap and easy production method for bands to create their own novel and compelling “digital music boxes”? Consumers love un-duplicable, novel and compelling products, all characteristics of items worth purchasing.

Music Industry trys out the Ringle
2007-09-11 20:40:00
music industry newsThe music industry is receiving a lot of criticism (no news here) from the blogosphere for its new product, the "ringle". The "ringle" attempts to link wireless media with CD store culture. It's a fairytale idea and simply doesn't resonate with consumers. Sony BMG introduced the idea saying they plan to charge 6 to 7 bucks for a CD single wrapped with a ringtone and a jpeg (desktop wallpaper) and call it a "ringle". What's particularly asinine about the "ringle" is that it comes in light of Apple's announcement to include a ringtone converter product on iTunes. Better yet, there are free ways to create your own ringtones. Also, remember Sony BMG were the ones who secretly included the copy-protection software XCP on select CD products. Consumer outrage ensued and the products were recalled. Now who is going to load-up one of their discs?Sorry guys - CDs are over!On the flip side, Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy and Amazon have agreed to participate in selling the "ringle". There is something easy about picking up your favorite song and making it your ringtone, without dealing with the online "credit card-login-sign up-verify" hassle. Read More on Sony's Ringle in Reuters.

attending a few parties
2007-09-05 21:04:00
songs from the interwebThere were a few decadent parties to attend, they all wallowed in leaves and misery and sunshine rain. People wore masks over their faces, they had diamond faces to hide; a mystery fever. I went to the party on “Tell Street”, just above “Keglar's Square”. The party was broken-hearted, crimson and full of orchestral music. I saw a few people that I knew, but otherwise was unacquainted with most of the crowd. The food was prepared by a gourmet and we all drank champagne. About an hour into the party, the host, “Dr. Philip Brownshoe”, held a toast. He toasted to life and many other things which I didn't hear. I didn't hear because I was too busy watching a criminal roam through the crowd, pacing and taking notes. Featured Artists:1. | The Professor's Secrets |
2007-09-03 20:23:00
Positioned in the calm of yesteryears' evening, a pipe smoke rang from the professor's mouth. He told me of history in the deep Eastern European descent. He had a ringing about him, a mustache of yesterday, a helmet to rely on. He told me of secret plans, of spy games and countless attempts at assassination. This professor had knowledge – he had a scary knowledge of yesterday's attempts and conspiracies. This professor rang something no one else knew. But he had to pass it on. He had to pass it on to someone else. He rang truths from his mouth, embedded deep within his study – the oriental rug, the pipe smoke of yesterday – the clarinet record player and window that peered to the jazz club alley below. He was a secretive, well-suited man who carried grave secrets of Eastern European history. He had a hallow way about him, like he didn't know me or care to know me. He wanted relief – he wanted to share the secrets – to rid himself from knowing. I left him that night, pacing back to my hotel down a moonlit streaked street – cigarette smoke puffing from my mouth – new secrets to ponder. My hotel was brown and the windows were rounded and protected by metal calligraphy. It was our intention, the professor's and mine, to meet the next morning for omelets and coffee. We'd had a lot yet to discuss, to cover...We'd meet at Shakey's, the local cafe, a packed house of jazz and cappuccino and green pepper omelets – plenty of red-checkered tablecloths. We'd meet, we'd discuss what to do with these secrets – these trade secrets. How would they get out properly? How to leak with elegance and promiscuity. The professor'd been planning this for years. He had a blue print to share, a way to do things right. I awoke early, intending to meet at 8am sharp, just as the crowds would arrive. I shaved, I carefully assembled my suit and looked sharp. The sun lit a streak against the brown, hazelnut room – a morning affair – a delightful way to begin the day. So different from the eerie clarinet, moonlit, secretive night before. The professor would be there any moment. He was going to arrive first, sit outside, order an omelet and wait. This would keep intentions secret and aloof. I arrived, pacing about 3 blocks to get there. The cafe was already busy as expected, the awnings hung strong over crowds and swarms of early-breakfast-goers. The professor was seated outside as expected. I puffed from my cigarette, tossed it aside and crossed the avenue, heading strong, 180 degrees towards the professor and his table. I paced, quickly, and suddenly, somewhat nervously. The early morning clouds shifted, spotting over the sun, bright and hazy. I crossed the street, walking over a pot hole. A car turned the corner and I shuffled quickly to escape its course. I reached the curb, nearly 20 ft from where the professor was seated. I watched as comers and goers hustled past him and inside the diner-shop. I whistled past, now eager to sit beside him, to discuss our plans. I was 10 feet, 5 feet- 2 feet - a burst of light flashed in my face, a curbside ring of metal flashed, a baby screamed in panic, and a dead hen pinioned. The professor looked up from reading his morning paper and offered for me to sit. I rustled into my black metal seat, eager to hear his plans, his words of truth. These secrets, they'd been growing on me, bothering me – making me restless. The professor seemed to grin a little, though he knew this was business – these were secrets he'd been tortured by over the years. But there was an oft-arrogance in his words today; maybe it was that'd he'd been glad to relieve himself of sole proprietorship of these trade secrets, and maybe it was my newfound agitation. But the professor had assumed a greater position – a less humble one. I ordered my eggs, green pepper, cheese – and a coffee. The professor folded his paper, smiled slightly and began to speak, to speak with a chipper-ness. It was uncanny, it seemed tricky, almost unfair. These secrets, these leeches of history, were something he'd been willing to hand over to me in exchange for protection – protection from the CIA and any other intelligence that'd be willing to kill for immunity. I'd leak the secrets carefully in exchange for cash from whoever wanted them. Once the secrets were leaked, the professor would no longer have to watch his back – a leaked secret no longer becomes exclusive, private information. I was careful in my deal, in my own willingness to take on his business. But I also knew that he'd been careful in his own. Secretly we watched each other for months, preying around houses, apartments, libraries, street corners, ambiguous in our search to reach an agreement. He didn't know that I knew his sneakiness, his prying around in my affairs. At least I didn't think he knew that I knew.Featured Artists:1. The Bell (The Bell Myspace)2. | Halloween Party |
2007-09-03 18:21:00
I decided to leave the afternoon gala and head-over to “Yesterday's Leaf Party”. The candy disco rang, the candy-corn teeth spun out, and an orange casting raised a few brows. The sad picture of Halloween's early evening drank heavy. I ran into a few people, they had a few drinks in them. They wore black robes and rang orange brights from their eyes. I went out back to the porch, where a few people sat, deep in conversation. They drank an amber cider that ran visions of “Ivy Bar”, our local town square bar. The couples, the fashion, the capes, the candy-corn eyes and teeth, the red underbelly of velvet, the sheet-rock porch floor – it all rang visions of early fall hang-out-time.Featured Artists:1. | One Night in Paris |
2007-09-03 05:31:00
The bells were tolling, the Christmas chatter was alive in Paris. A streak of blue light tipped from the cobblestone streets. I saw her from afar. A blink and she was gone. Then I stumbled over to the “Wharf Cafe” - alive in the granite quarter and alive with peace and red checkered tablecloths. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to stay – they seemed to be closing. But when I arrived at the front porch, a waiter came out to seat me. I was happy to sit, it'd been a long day – a long day of traveling - silking through the countryside and past carts of goats and other farm beasts. I ordered a cappuccino rescue and sat outside in the cold wind looking at the yellow crested town square clock. A bird floated past, a chicken in the night. I was in France, under the cold bristling moonlight. A clarinet whistled in the distance, a spy game for the ears. I was sure I'd heard it somewhere before. The night was long, the golden glances of sun throughout the day seemed to tire me. But alas, I was here under the moon at night, drinking a cappuccino rescue - spiked with brown sugar. The moment was green, telling of ivy paths, and wintered crispy rain. It wasn't long before I settled into my hotel that evening, sure I'd be sleeping in late. I was changing and ready for bed when suddenly I noticed a pastel book outside on my window ledge, left behind by a previous tenet. I wasn't sure how to perceive it, if I should open and look. I decided to leave it alone. I decided to wade through the thoughts of travel and sleep. The crispy rain seemed to fall again and before I knew it I was awake, ready to eat an omelet.Featured Artists:1. Mike Doughty (Official, Myspace, Wikipedia)2. St. Vincent (Official, Myspace)3.
