Just Kat Stuff
Hi. Welcome to my Stuff. I'm a mom, wife, freelance writer/editor, business owner, and basically keep the world turning on its axis, just like any parent. I curse like a truck driver, will usually embellish any story for the sake of a laugh, and am slightly out of my mind. And clearly enjoying the ride. Nice to meet you.

We Have Standards

Dear Kat,I have and important question for you. At your Halloween party, are you planning on having candy corn? That is all. Good day.-Crystal~~~~Dear Crystal,The official Halloween party Commission has come to the conclusion that candy corn is a vital part of any decent Halloween celebration. In fact, we believe it is so important that we have planned to fill small black goody-bags with a coma-inducing quantity of the orange and white treats. I will make sure that you receive one. Thank you for your inquiry and your attention to the integrity of the upcoming soiree.Best,KatMaster of Ceremonies and Queen Supervisor of All Things Halloween at My House...

I Bite.
2009-10-19 00:54:00
The very expensive custom vampire fangs were sold out, so I bought a cheap pair that fit over your teeth but they didn't fit at all. Then I ordered the molding plastic and instructions from the very expensive place and custom fit the cheap fangs into my mouth. Voila! They clamp over my teeth and fit snugly on the plastic sort of retainer thingy I made. I can bite people (tested it out on my husband), talk, and drink through a straw. No way I'm going to be able to eat at my own Halloween party, but oh well. Lots of people are coming over. Plenty of flesh around if I get hungry....

I So Much Love You
2009-10-12 10:59:00
Today's 4am conversation in bed was a little sweeter. There was tossing and turning going on with the small person. I reached out a hand to settle him, which sometimes works, but today it woke him all the way up."Are you having a dream, honey?"He sat up. "Yes. Mom?""Yeah?""I dream....I so much love you...and I saved you inna boat.""You did? Thanks.""Yeah, and I fixed you. I so much love you, mom.""I so much love you, too. Go back to sleep, kay?""Okay."...

Keeping with the recent habit of making blog posts out of cute things my kid does and says...No matter how strung out, tired, busy, overwhelmed or deeply involved in other writing I get; no matter that I forget I even have a blog; my kid never stops doing and saying cute things.***It was dark. I was sleeping soundly. The kind where you are so thoroughly asleep that your body is totally relaxed, you've not a single care, and the entire world is made up of a soft, warm, dark bed that cuddles you completely. The kind of sleep that the mother of small children would pay good damned money for, if it were for sale.I was violently drawn out of my sweet nothingness. "Mom! It's morningtime!" His voice, clear and loud as a bell, rang in my ear.Adrenaline surged through my veins. "Huh?" I quickly took...

Lions and Tigers and Bears
2009-09-30 23:04:00
I was too tired today to be of much use in the real world, so I called my mom, picked up my kid after lunch and we all went to the zoo. I can do such things on a whim. I'm lucky.Everything is uphill at the L.A. Zoo. Colin wanted to see the lions, so we made our way to the tippy-top of zoo mountain, where their habitat tucks into the hillside at an odd angle just out of sight of the giraffes. I suppose that is so the lions don't try to jump out and eat them. Probably would be an anxious life for a giraffe, too, being stared at by lions all day.We finally got up there and I picked up Colin so he could see them. Lions are lazy bastards, unless they are hunting. I've never seen them so much as get up and stretch. I guess lazy is just how lions ought to be when they are only 20 feet from your k...

Extracurricluar Cuteness
2009-09-30 03:39:00
I'm buzzing from just finishing a story in time to get it postmarked for tomorrow's contest deadline. Can't go to sleep just yet, so I thought I'd post some of the very, very cute things my kid said today. Every day is teeming with cute stuff coming from his quarter, but some days are just cuter than others. When I picked him up from school, Colin launched all 65 pounds and 44 inches of his rock-solid, nearly 4-year old self at my legs. I had to brace myself for the customary highly effusive yet most violent greeting so I don't hit the pavement."Hi, Colin! Did you have fun at school today?""Yeah. Mom? Teacher said... um... she said to me.""What did she say, babe?""She said... uh... she said someping to me, go over dere. And I don' no.""Hmm. Well, she's right here, should we ask her?""No! W...

My New Favorite Blog
2009-09-28 16:41:00
Neil Gaiman's assistant, Fabulous Lorraine, has a blog. She's funny, intelligent, plays music, keeps bees and rescues Bengals, which apparently pee all over the place. She gets bonus points, in my great book of points, for having purple hair. Most notably, she just sucked me in for 45 minutes of blog-reading in the middle of a busy day. If you're not interested in the cats of her most recent post, check out her essay, "Top Ten Things Never to Send to Your Favorite Writer."I want Neil Gaiman's job, really, but I'd take hers as a close second....

I'm alive. Really.

One kid starting Kindergarten + one kid homeschooling + me doing stuff at my church every morning M-F + one husband working 12 hour days 6 days a week + housework + handling some old legal stuff + writing = I don't exist here anymore. Blogland. KatStuff. Remember me? I stop by and read everybody I used to read every so often. Still, I don't comment much, don't have many conversations with my old pals. I miss it. As my friend Kariz recently wrote, "All I know is that more stuff happens every day and if I even think about catching up, I will probably never blog again. That’s that."On the other hand, life is full and good. I can't complain. Well, I mean, I could, and I sometimes do, but my complaints are on the order of "Somebody drank all the bleepin' coffee and I have to make another pot ...
