Life With Paul - Living with FASD
This is a journal of sorts, as I record our life with Paul. Paul is my wife's little brother, who has FASD. After some soul searching we took him out of foster care, which was a huge commitment for a family as young as we are.

Summer with Paul
2008-07-09 21:05:40
It’s been a while since my last post, with Paul’s baseball season and my work I have been swamped.  Now that summer break is upon us Paul is at home with the daycare kids.   It is interesting to watch the way he interacts with them.  There is a 5 year old in care that has [...]...

Paul Loses His Weekend
2008-06-08 22:08:18
This weekend was a wash for Paul.  He left a big Social Studies project to the last minute, despite us bugging him to bring it home and start working.  On Tuesday we finally resorted to the old “If you don’t bring it, we’ll go get it” which usually works.  The thought of one of us [...]...

Paul Gets Caught
2008-06-07 06:56:39
Sorry, it’s been awhile since my last post. In addition to the joys of shift work there, is allot on my plate right now and this kind of fell to the side. This week Paul and his friends got caught throwing things in front of cars during lunch at school. Paul’s acceptance of [...]...

Paul’s bad day gets longer…
2008-05-22 04:13:08
Anyone dealing alcohol affected children knows that they have good days and bad days. Lately it seems that Paul has been having nothing but bad days. Monday night he had a meltdown because it was time for his shower and he wanted to watch TV. I was giving the baby his bedtime [...]...

Paul and the Staggered Development
2008-05-15 22:26:25
We attended a workshop for people dealing with adolescents with FASD last night. During the workshop the presenter kept mentioning how parts of these children are lagging behind. Paul’s ability to function when he is tired, hungry or stressed is functioning at about a 2-4 year olds level. He will become sullen [...]...

Baseball Season
2008-05-06 21:52:22
Every year we put Paul in baseball.  He seemed to enjoy it, but two years ago we got a bad coach.  One of the super competitive ones, that didn’t seem to realize that most of the team had never played before.  At the end of the season when they lost the city finals he cancelled [...]...

The House Hippo
2008-05-04 12:36:07
Paul was watching TV today and saw the house hippo commercial. He ate it right up and before the commercial got to the part where it tell people that they need to think about what they see on TV, he said “I didn’t know there were house hippos”. This was a nice validation [...]...

The Laundry
2008-04-24 22:03:53
Right now we are trying to come up with a system to help Paul with his clothes.  His laundry hamper is always full a couple of days after he does laundry.  We make sure that all his clothes are put away on laundry day but somehow they always end up back in his hamper.  By [...]...

Jack Learns to Walk
2008-04-20 23:06:20
Our baby is learning to walk, and Paul is having a hard time letting go. Every time Paul sees Jack walking he either lunges at him in an over-protective way or jumps in front of him with his arms out. This always ends the same as Jack is thrown off balance and falls.  [...]...

The Home Daycare
2008-04-15 22:07:23
As Jen’s maternity leave was coming to an end, we were unable to get Jack into daycare. Most places just laughed at us and told us that we should have put him on a waiting list when we found out he was coming. After some deliberation we decide that it would be best [...]...

Paul and the PSP
2008-04-13 20:33:05
For some time now Paul has been saving to buy a PSP (Playstation Portable). He actually started saving when they first came out, but after he got half was there he broke down and bought his DS. His sister had one so he had to have one too. Thanks to recent price [...]...

Along Came Simon
2008-04-11 12:30:26
Last year for our summer vacation we decided to rent an RV and drive around Southern Manitoba. We tried to keep the kids entertained with books, games and movies while we were driving, but Paul wasn’t having any of it. By the time we got to Morden, we were wondering if the whole [...]...

A Roll of the Dice
2008-04-08 11:17:15
When things happen in Paul’s world his reaction is rarely predictable. I guess on the plus side life with Paul is always interesting. There have been times when we have braced for the worst, and nothing happens. Other times we haven’t seen the end of the world coming. Last summer we thought it [...]...

Playing Clue
2008-04-07 14:19:45
Playing board games with Paul is always a different experience, yet somehow it always ends the same, in tears. We got the Clue DVD board game for Christmas and thought it would be somehow better that a normal board game. Now that we’ve actually played it, I think we were very wrong. [...]...

Paul and the Avalanche
2008-04-02 21:55:34
I think that arguing with us is like being caught in an avalanche for Paul. Once he picks up momentum he’s gone and always trying to go back. Paul got a phone call today from a friend inviting him over. Of course Paul hadn’t done anything that he had been asked to do all [...]...

Spring Break and Homework
2008-04-01 07:56:19
Ever since Paul came to live with us we have a certain degree of fun with his homework. Math was by far the worst, but it is all pretty bad. While most kids dislike homework, for Paul it is a break from his routine, which is rarely easy. When he was in [...]...

Fighting With Paul
2008-03-30 21:17:30
There was little disagreement tonight that reminded me that it is always wise to make sure we are arguing about the same thing. Next week is spring break, because of Paul’s difficulty with change we try to keep his schedule consistent, even during holidays. We told him that he could stay up an hour later, [...]...
