The Beggar & The Dream Butcher
2006-09-05 15:08:00
Every afternoon on my way to work, I used to stop by to give him something --anything, from used clothing, to biscuits, to 20 bucks. He's the mendicant man by the churchyard who had lost both legs but not his cheerful smile. Some nights back, as I walked to the bakeshop, I saw him on the same spot. I apologized for not having anything to give this time but for one of 5 pieces of ensaymada that I had bought. He gave me the same cheerful grateful smile. I wondered as I made my way home, just how much he and I had in common these days… wondered what sort of dreams he had before he lost his legs, and what dreams I deemed lost after ABS. I wondered why nothing seemed to bother me these days compared to a lot that bugged me when I was one of the top paid execut...

You've Lost that Bloggin' Feeling
2006-08-15 15:32:00
oh, o.. o.. o.. you've lost that bloggin' feeling; now it's gone, gone, gone..A eulogy is supposed to start with something more somber than just humming a popular tune but... I lost that bloggin' feeling the day Hazel, Ismael and Arnel died. It'll be back, hopefully, if only to finish this post....

Raiders of the Lost Art
2006-08-04 12:02:00
Jun's story never saw print... never went to air. Not yet anyway;-)We've all heard about looting in Iraq after the fall of Baghdad, about missing centuries-old museum items, about US soldiers and a Fox News cameraman brought to court for bringing home "souvenirs" from the ravaged country.Jun, a Filipino, was part of the first US Intelligence contingent that arrived in Baghdad to secure Saddam's Palace after the fall. Like some of his fellow servicemen, Jun brought home scores of "souvenirs" from Iraq, among them a huge painting of a lady that was often seen as backdrop to Saddam's on-cam appearances. He took the paintings out of their frames, rolled them so thin they passed through airport customs unnoticed. He knew they would fetch a hefty price, and obviously knew the risk of coming out ...

Mike test… Mic!
2006-07-30 02:30:00
Forget about his good-looking Newsday pic! It was taken at the turn of the century… sometime 1998 :-)) He has lost two molars since :D Mike is your quintessential newsman, walks around the newsroom with the latest bit of info stored in his head, goes on-cam without hardcopy, jumps to his feet at the slightest lead that something big is about to break. Can you believe that this guy, who is obviously Caucasian, speaks Tagalog fluently?? Yes, he speaks Tagalog with a French accent: Le` Cou (Turn)… Le` Gau (Lost) :DIf you're not in the mood to discuss news... say, your mind's busy sorting out some admin stuff, or you just wanna float around in a dreamy state, DON'T GO NEAR MIKE! He'll talk to you about political strife in Zimbabwe... or some massacre in Bhutan :-)) When Marc Logan and I we...

Weng
2006-06-04 14:23:00
His hand rubbed his chin frantically as we set up the mic and camera, now & then throwing me a suspicious glance. I stumbled upon Weng's life story over dinner with friends, journalists Earl Parreno & his brother Lyle, erstwhile activist turned Presidential Special Affairs ASEC Danny Consumido, ABS Correspondent Melo Del Prado and Henry. We all gasped when Earl described the day Weng's parents were exhumed from their common grave. They were tortured and buried alive by fellow communist party cadres during an anti-infiltration campaign in the mid-80s. Weng was only 5-yrs old when it happened. His parents' remains were exhumed only last November. Even now, he says, he can't bear to look at pictures or video of the exhumation in all its graphic detail: his dad's arms embracing his mom as...

Tito Ding & Oil Politics
2006-05-26 01:43:00
He's always been angry. Angry at what government has done to our lives... at economists for messing up our finances... at politicians for impersonating Barbie. Huh, why Barbie? Well... go figure! I like it that Tito Ding is always angry. It makes for good soundbites when we interview him. LOL He's always been nice to me. Never mind that it took years from the last interview before I contacted him again. And he hates it that I always lose his number, have to go through the phone directory listing of all his relatives before I finally get through to him.Oh, he digs the fact that I have read his books about nationalism, imperialism, hunger in a land of plenty, among others. Somewhere in the back of his optimistic mind, he says, he feels I can help save this gen...

Doris
2006-05-06 01:32:00
She lost her job one fine April day. A lot of 'whys' and 'what-the f---' circulated in the industry when we heard about what happened to her. She, who was always given the toughest assignments, braved storms and landslides, risked contracting SARS just to deliver the news... how can they take her out! What's wrong with the tv network?!...other than the fact, of course, that it is now being run by impostors…or impersonators, if you may!Doris has her faults, to be sure; she can raise hell or ruffle feathers and laugh it all out with friends over beer afterwards. She's nobody's fool... but deep down, she's a… fool? Nah! She's a great mother to Lorenzo! She's a good friend to Korina! She's a good team-mate to Jimmy! A good drinking buddy to Field Producer Rainier! She's a longtime friend t...

DeanMB (Mega-bite!)
2006-05-03 13:43:00
His storage capacity is a lot more than that.. should have been DeanTB! We met before Channel 5 launched its flagship news program, "The Big News", when Olivia, the News Director, tasked me to interview applicants for that newscast which I was going to EP. So, DeanMB came to submit a terrabyte worth of resume! It happened ages ago, but he remembers to this day the one interview question I asked him. "How do you handle mess?" He fumbled... more because he didn't expect such a silly question on an otherwise serious occasion. Well, by now he knows why I had to ask him that in the first place. Producing a flagship daily newscast can be such a bloody mess. He's always been my Associate Producer, trouble-shooter, think-tank, goffer... always up on his toes lest I shoot his shank with my toy gun ...

Ron & Ces
2006-05-01 00:56:00
They came to FYI two days after graduating from university. Literally fresh out of their graduation costume! Jessica and I met Ces at Sunday Church service where she was part of the multi-media ministry. We invited her to be part of FYI and she invited Ron, her classmate at UP, to attend our Monday editorial meeting.Like good students, they took notes, listened to the discussions, nodded in agreement :D and when it was time to roll out the assignments, Ron was given the Nature Park story and Ces, the nurses' migration story. Both gave me that 'are-you-serious!' kind of look. They thought they would just be assisting in the research and shoots… production staff kind of job. Yet we gave them the stories, no interviews and qualifying exams needed. I think the only question I asked Ron wasâ€...
