Pope leaves Sydney
2008-07-20 21:40:00
Praise God!Finally, we can have our lives back.I have to say, although amusing, the throngs of happy mass goers was starting to get on my nerves. Perhaps my hangover yesterday didn't help but there's only so much gold cross bearing with accompanying singing groups that I can take without getting a headache. We even saw 2 guys take helium balloons from Krispy Kreme (with permission, of course) and then go off singing down the street with their throng of Christian revellers....wtf? Why, why why would anyone do that? I just don't get it...perhaps they were singing the praises of the Krispy Kreme? The mind boggles....

World Youth Day, Sydney
2008-07-15 22:12:00
I have fought long and hard not to get pissed about the Pope's arrival and the World Youth Day (more like a whole week) in Sydney. We had already been told not to hassle pilgrims and that we would be fined if we did and with this level of policing I feared another APEC fiasco - concrete barricades and hoards and hoards of people creating Christian anarchy in my personal city space.Well, we have been hassled a lot, and I'm going to be lucky to get to work on Friday, but overall it hasn't been all that bad (although I might be regret saying that later in the week). It is actually amusing having a whole bunch of young Catholics roaming the streets, carrying strange flags in their large ethnic groups. All of us locals are lo...

Dome Bar, Sydney : Bar Review
2008-07-12 17:10:00
The more that I reflect, the more I feel that this is actually a pub dressed up as a bar (which it actually is) given that it is located on the top floor of the Crown Hotel on the cnr of Crown and Cleveland and run by the same people.I went last night with a big group as a farewell drinks. I had been to this bar once before on date on a Thurs night and found the place empty (literally) with us being the only people there. The decor was very cute, having a boudoir feel, and I wanted to see what the place was like on a busier night.Well, Saturday nights are busier and the vibe was different to what I expected. The music was cranked up a to a too loud mixture of Top 40 and dancy numbers. Not really nightcluby, but not chilled enough to be bar like either. The vibe it created was more like a r...

Piano room, Sydney : Bar Review
2008-07-05 17:36:00
The Piano Room. I had been yearning to check it out since my last dinner in the Cross, at JuJu's, where we weren't able to get in because of a 'function'. Little did I realise then that the 'function' is a norm at Piano room and reflects a deep management dysfunction.I arranged to meet my bar-hopping sister inside the bar at 7.15pm Saturday night. No problem, you might think. You would be wrong. As soon as I arrive at the door I am told that the bar is 'booked out'. WTF? It's a bar. I confidently tell the doorman that I am meeting someone there (which I am) and walk in, whilst being instructed that there a no seats and that I am allowed to stand at the bar area.As I walk in I see that the inside the bar is FANTASTIC. WOW! The...

How to destroy your own political career (and everyone elses) without even trying
2008-07-02 21:50:00
The Belinda Neal (The NSW Labor MP for the seat of Robertson) case study is a perfect example of how to completely destroy your own life, your husbands and make everyone hate you.The story:Belinda and husband (John Della Bosca - NSW State Education Minister) go out to dinner at Iguana's restaurant. Restaurant is closing and about to turn into a nightclub.Belinda and John abuse staff. Says things such as 'I'm going to close you down.', 'Don't you know who I am' and threaten removal of liquor licence. John drives home.Staff complain.Belinda and John deny saying anything. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcbiozPKKlQ)Restaurant officially apologises to Belinda and John and force staff to retract statements.Witnesses go to media saying that Belinda and John are lying. | How to be miserable in Winter |
2008-06-26 18:33:00
Go on a low carb diet!My God....I have had a miserable week. The weather has been cold and windy and instead of cuddling up to nice hot high-carb food I am munching away on boring salads and chicken.I'm not sure how much longer I can go on for. And it's only been a week! Not even a week actually. 5 days. I have done this diet once before and had no where near as much misery. In fact, I didn't find it that hard to do. This time, I'm barely coping and moping around the cold office like Scrooge. Is feeling thinner the same as being thinner? If this is the case, then I can go off my diet and start cuddling up to yummy warm carbs. I do feel thinner. However this isn't going to help me come the Spring if I am actually not thinner and have only been kidding myself.Help! What to do...what t...

Cougar Dating
2008-06-17 19:26:00
Some girls at work were looking at a Cougar Dating website the other day and wanting to be Cougars. Both were under 30!!! I feel that this raises some important questions about the Cougar issue that need to be addressed.1. How old do you have to be to be a Cougar?and conversely,2. What age should the men be? Or what age gap defines Cougarism?Given the dearth of literature or guidelines on this issue, I posit the following rules for defining Cougarism.1. There must be a 10 year age gap at least between Cougar and mate. Following from this, you therefore cannot be in your mid-twenties and call yourself a Cougar. This would make you and your mating illegal.2. You must be over 30 to call yourself a Cougar. The ideal age for Cougars should be over 40. Although ...

Dalai Lama in Sydney
2008-06-12 15:21:00
Wow. It's been a whole week since I lasted posted. This week I have been so busy at the Lama">Dalai Lama workshop and sorting out all my other work for it that I haven't been at my computer very much.I love the Dalai Lama. I see him practically every time that he comes to Sydney for at least one talk so I rushed in to buy my tickets when I heard that that Dalai Lama was giving a 5 day workshop. We are on day 3 today of the workshop and the topic is Kamalashila's Middle Stages of Meditation. It's been fantastic, but very tiring as you can imagine. I'm accustomed to long periods of having to concentrate from uni, esp in post grad where I would be at uni from 9-5, doing back to back lectures ...

I love YouTube
2008-06-05 21:46:00
It is obvious from my posts that I love Youtube, but really...I do actually love Youtube. There is a SAAB ad on in Australia at the moment (and probably screened around the world) that has the most beautiful song on it that I just love. I had no idea of the singer, the title of the song, just that the lyric was 'release me..'. So lovely. With the joy of Youtube it literally took me less that 2 seconds to find it. All I had to do was type 'release me' into the search and bingo! The wonderful song was mine to be heard. Hear it below:I remember the old days (I need to stop saying that) when I used to have to go into the record store and SING to the store clerk the lyrics in a desperate attempt to find a song that I heard once in...

How to be a Bollywood Extra
2008-06-04 15:30:00
I get asked a lot (well, a bit) about the Bollywood movie was a extra in while I was in Mumbai. I actually just got asked, so I thought that I would blog about this.If you are going to India I recommend that you appear in a Bollywood movie. It's great fun and requires mimimal effort. All you have to do is this:1. Go to Mumbai2. Go to the suburb of Colaba (preferably, stay in this area)3. When in Colaba, hang out in cafe Leopolds (you don't have to do this excessively or wait around all day. Just go a few times - at dinner time for instance). There was an Australian book set in Mumbai called 'Shantaram' that mentions this cafe.* Actually, Leopolds isn't what we would really call a cafe. It looks and feels more like a take-away food place that have 'dine-i...

Psycho stalkers
2008-06-02 00:09:00
Man...I am sick of these psycho stalkers on internet dating sites.Let me tell you this story. Many moons ago, a friend dated someone from an internet dating site for a while. The guy turned out to be a weirdo and had several AVO's out against him from a previous girlfriend. Anyway, after the break up he kept following my friend around, bumping into her in places etc. Usual story. He was a psycho stalker. Now my friend has moved on and is off the site. The psycho, however, still remains. He keeps changing his profile and every time he does he keeps trying to initiate some kind of contact with me. This is the second or third time he has tried to initate some kind of contact. I'm sure it's not personal, as I've never met him in real life and I have hidden my...

Sydney Film Festival 2008
2008-05-31 17:30:00
I remember when I first went to the film festival, many years ago now. I remember the price - around $15. The value - either a full day session or an evening session. For me, that was part of the fun of the film festival. The low financial obligation meaning that you could literally afford to watch a whole bunch of stuff that you would only ever want to see out of curiosity and that gave you the true film festival experience - burn out, exhaustion and stumbling out of the State Theatre being not entirely sure what day it was from seeing way too many films.Over the years the festival has moved further and further away from recreating these happy memories of my film going youth. | 2008-05-31 01:25:00 |
Ok....I have to confess. I have been a bitch this week. I have just got my period and I know that this is only a partial excuse, but I am going to use it.My first confession is this:1. I went out on a below average date on Wed pm. The guy was ok, but annoying and wanted to have academic debates rather than get to know me or talk normally. I had to run away to leave for Paco Pena, so I promised to stay in touch with email. Anyway, he emailed me a few days ago and to my shame, I'm not even going to bother to respond with 'thanks, but no thanks'. Well, he did tell me that he made someone cry once with his debating and wanting people to defend their position, which I thought was harsh, and possibly made him deserving but still...I should treat people better. But it's hard to know what better i...

Ju Jus, Sydney - Restaurant Review
2008-05-30 16:46:00
I went to Ju Jus Japanese restaurant last night with a big group of friends/work people. Ju Ju's is pretty well known in Sydney and has been around for yonks. This was the first time that I had been and I read mixed reviews about the place. The famous karaoke machine was broken so the restaurant wasn't overly crowded. A good thing after a very long day at work, so I wasn't too disappointed. The decor is great and the seating is really cool. You must remove your shoes to enter the restaurant and the seating area is unusual. You have to sit on the floor basically, which is a raised shiny wooden platform (a bit like a pool decking area), with your legs going below the floor level at the table. The tables are organ...

Paco Pena - Sydney
2008-05-28 19:23:00
I went and saw Paco Pena, A Compas!, last night. A good friend from dance class had an extra ticket and invited me to go along with him at the last minute. I was a very, very lucky girl. There aren't many dance shows that wake you up and make you think, 'This is what dance is about', but this show is one of them. The live music of Paco and his musicians is incredible in itself, but with the combination of the talented flamenco dancers it makes for an unparalleled music/dance experience. Every moment of the show is moving beyond belief and myself and my friend were sitting with our jaws dropping at how incredible the performances were at so many points it would be impossible to count them all. Here is an excerpt from the show below:The video gives you some idea of the show, but it doesn't do ...

I have to admit, I have seriously considered becoming a nun. It has made some sense to me, given my sad love life, and just last night I was talking to another friend who has also considered becoming a nun because of her sad love life. However I have NEVER considered getting married to a wall or the Eiffel Tower.Apparently someone has just made a doco about 2 women that have married the Berlin Wall and the Eiffel Tower.OMFG!Read the accompanying story from the Independent in the UK to be really freaked out.http://www.independent.co.uk/extras/sunday-review/living/i-married-the-eiffel-tower-832519.htmlMy question is how the hell is this possible? | Ivy, Sydney : Bar Review |
2008-05-25 15:12:00
Ahhh...Ivy. I'd heard a few things about this bar before I finally got the chance to go on Saturday night. Run by Hemmes, a guy that runs the successful Establishment complex, I was looking forward to checking out this new place and seeing what the fuss was all about. The smh.com.au said "Even the most hard-core party pooper will find something to love about the Ivy. It's not a bar, it's a bar precinct, with eight zones over several levels, sensational decor and hardworking staff who are easy on the eye." Indeed. I needed to see it for myself. My companion, my bar hopping sister, had already been several times. She quietly moaned when I told her I wanted to go to Ivy and promised me that I would see what she meant once we got there. We arrived and shuffled our way past the bouncers (checkpoi...

Ebay has stolen my 100% positive feedback!

Ebay has stolen my 100% positive feedback!!! Damn them. They mysteriously changed their feedback system on ebay Australia. Now sellers can't leave neg. feedback for buyers and the calculations are done differently. Before, neutral feedback didn't matter so much and now it's been factored in to the total score via this formula:"The Positive Feedback percentage is calculated based on the number of positive, negative and neutral ratings received in the last 12 months as follows:Positives / Positives + Neutrals + Negatives"I have had ONE, ONLY ONE neutral feedback the whole time that I have been on ebay and I have now gone from 100% positive to 99.1%!!!Thieves!!!!I have sent them this angry email:Feedback > Understanding the Fe...

That's right....it's Eurovision time.I LOVE Eurovision. Every year I get more and more addicted to it. To compensate, I am devoting my week to Europop and to watching the Eurovision contestants on Youtube. The bitching for this year has already begun hotting up on Youtube. | Madonna tour? |
2008-05-17 18:23:00
There are several good things about living in Australia. The great beaches, weather, food and lifestyle etc. The bad thing is that we are so far away from everywhere. This is good in some respects, dodgy celebrities don't visit us often, but bad in others. For instance, seeing Madonna live. This sounds like a simple task if you happen to live in North America or Europe. It is a next to impossible one if you happen to live in Sydney, such as myself.Madonna has only ever toured Australia ONCE. That's right. ONE TIME ONLY. This was in the early 90s sometime and I was stupid enough not to go and see her. I was pissed that the premier tickets were being charged at around $300 and I thought that this was a rip-off. Being oppositi...

Topless nude protests grip Melbourne
2008-05-15 23:50:00
I haven't done any blogging for a while. Why?I have been busy with:1. Enrolling in a Phd2. Buying things on ebay3. My life in generalI need to be more blog committed, I know. But I also need to be more committed to 1000 other things (eg. yoga, dancing, meditation, writing, researching PhD, dating etc) and so the blog suffers. However, I do feel that the topless nude protests require comment and to be shared with the wider world community and I am now breaking my blog silence."Who would nude protest and why is this gripping Melbourne?" you may ask, understandably (esp if you are not in Australia). The answer is, I'm not sure. A few weeks ago, there was a sad event in Melbourne where a taxi driver was killed by a passenger. The taxi drivers, upset about lack...

There's nothing like organising your favourite links to get a sense of where you have been, what phases you have gone through and what crazy ideas you've had. My list is so out of control on my home PC I spontaneously decided to do a clean up. What I found:1. India Travelogue - from the research of my trip 2 years ago to India2. Ecohut - I decided briefly to build my own hut on a rural property.3. Random Wikepedia entries - do I really need to have 1936 bookmarked???4. National parks - for when I was training for the 100km Oxfam trailwalk5. Buyers agents - for when I wanted someone else to buy my property for me6. NSW Crime statistics - I have no idea why I ever wanted that7. Twinbase - ??8. Indian Hindi Movie songs - to satisfy my bollywood music addiction acquired in India9. Universal M...

Christmas
2007-12-23 21:29:00
Well, there isn't anything Christmasy about this post actually. I am disappointed by the lack of Christmas movies on Australian television again however. I want Scrooge! Scrooged! And whatever other movie based on Charles Dickens 'A Christmas Carol' there is out there. I DO NOT want - Christmas Carols in some domain or music bowl or weirdarse movies like 'Fast and the Furious' (why?) I suspect this is to keep unruly alcohol-loving young men home Christmas eve so they're not too drunk or hungover for the family gatherings the following day.Overall, I am a happy girl this Christmas. I FINALLY got my money back from my suspect company this week. Woo hoo! and I am now on annual leave for a month! Double Woo hoo! It's all good. How am I wasting my on...

2007-11-22 21:39:00
You may have noticed that I have not posted anything for some time. There is a reason for this - I have been shopping. Ebay has taken hold of me and hasn't let go. With Christmas approaching it did seem to me to be the best way of getting it all over and done without having to set foot in a store. Yes, I am one of these freaky people that gets their shopping done early. Traumatic memories of Christmas shopping in real stores has scarred me for life and I now avoid them like the plague. I don't even like to LOOK at the Christmas hoards from a distance, much less go anywhere near them. Anyway, as you may expect, my online shopping has ended in tears (as do many things). I have just discovered that I have been charged $300 by an unknown company on my credit card statement. 300! I have no memo...

Moths attack Sydney!
2007-10-09 18:51:00
Yes, that's right. We have been over-run by moths!Moths, moths, everywhere. It is like something out of the bible. It is very disturbing and weird. Someone from yoga has had them in her hot water system and they keep clogging it up so much that it shuts her hot water down.....so weird....I have had them hanging out in my clothes when I put them outside and when I unpeg they swarm! I think my meth-addict neighbour who lives in the flat above me is scared of them and he keeps spraying outside. At first I thought it his cheap cologne, but realised that even he had some standards. I'm not sure why he is spraying, as they are in plague proportions so its unlikely to help, but being the good meth addict that he is, he likes to fritter his time away on useless tasks.Goodo!...

2007-10-07 15:36:00
You may recall that I had some concerns initially about the guy that I just met on TIDSTSRN.My exact quote was:'No offence to honest policing people, but generally through my experiences in the past, policing men = compulsive liar men.'Already, and very sadly, I have been proved correct. The guy I have just met has changed his profile name on TIDSTSRN and changed his location back to Canberra. He told me that he was new to living in Sydney, was going away on holiday and then he might have to move back to Canberra after his holiday. He has the nerve to write on his profile now that he is new to Canberra (despite telling me that he had been living there for years and has owned a house there for 12 months!!!!), effectively leaving his profile the same and just changing the city names!!! WTF? ...

Ok....I have had a second date and I officially like him. *sighs* He's really good looking, has a great body and can say the word 'marriage' without obviously choking. I did as Miss A. suggested and ignored the lack of communication and pretended that it wasn't an issue and we went out to dinner (To his credit, he did actually ring whilst I was nearing the end of my Ashtanga session, and it does make for interesting date conversation if you say "Sorry I couldn't take your call, I was in the middle of a headstand when my mobile rang"). However I have 2 problems:1. He is going away on holiday in a week for 3 weeks.2. He might not be staying in Sydney *sobs* I wouldn't be so worried about the going away part, if I didn't have such a bad experience with the last guy that I sort-of liked fr...

Last week I posted that I MIGHT have met someone from TISDSTRN. Unfortunately, I was wrong (again). Our departing conversation went something like this: 'It was really good to meet you and I'd like to talk more. We should catch up again next week.' - Him 'Sure.' - Me 'I'll text you on Sunday and we can sort out a time.' - Him. 'Ok.' - Me. Seems simple enough doesn't it? Now, do you think that I ever received this text from him? NO!!!! This TIDSTSRN just becomes more and more bizarre the longer you are on it. I would consider that he was never interested to begin with, but why bother saying that you wanted to meet up again? *sighs* I can only assume that within the space of less than 6 days he has managed to meet someone else or changed his mind about me. TIDSTSRN is very depressing. If I ...

After all our bitching about the failings of TIDSTSRN, it appears that I might - big emphasis on MIGHT - be starting to meet some normal/workable guys from that site.Last night I had a date with another guy (probably my errr...10th or so...I have lost count) and he seemed normal and was really good looking.Hmmm...I'm not sure if I should be optimistic or too hopeful too soon, but so far, he is definately one of the better guys that I have met from there. Anyone with a hot body gets a big thumbs up from me along with anyone that doesn't appear to have obvious frontal lobe damage.Anyway, we have arranged to meet up again next week. | The flaw of internet dating |
2007-09-19 23:39:00
Well...another week has gone by since my last post. Time flys when work beckons and one is busy, busy, busy (or in my case, distracted by other things - like ebay).Ms G. has given TIDSTSRN the flick after concluding that its entire premise is destined to fail. Her summation is essentially as such:Internet dating requires a chemistry to be instantaneous, otherwise neither party agree to meet again. Thus, relationships formed under such circumstances are either 1. unhealthy or 2. unrealistic. There is a fascinating theory behind this, outlined in Jeffery Young's Schema book, which you may check out if you are interested.Really, the book should be called, "How you f-up in relationships and why" and it is very good if you hav...
