Weekend Shot: NBK's Free Patchi Chocolates
2008-04-06 23:06:00
We went out yesterday to deposit the google cheque I received from this blog. While we are in a que, a generous kabayan approach us and gave these patchi chocolates to my son. You can also find chocolate in banks! :) Let me give you a short description about patchi chocolate I got from their site: Ever since its establishment in 1974, the Patchi brand has been synonymous with superior quality chocolate and exquisite chocolate designs. Only the finest imported raw material is used in the making of a Patchi piece of chocolate. This devotion to quality dictates that Patchi chocolates contain no preservatives, no artificial flavors, no vegetable oil, but only cocoa butter making its name the reference for fine chocolates. I grab one and it taste good, but what I love here is the chocolates'...

OFW Advisory: New OEC Policy
2008-04-01 14:15:00
I just want to share this important new rule of Overseas Employment Certificates (OEC) effective since March 24. We don't need to wait for a long que in LAC to validate our OEC. We can now present the OEC directly to airline counters, terminal fee counters and the Bureau of Immigration counters for validation. The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration is dropping the validation of documents of OFWs leaving through its labor assistance counters (LAC) at international airports to further streamline processes in the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Starting March 24, 2008, departing OFWs shall present the exit clearance or overseas employment certificate issued by the POEA directly to the airline counters, terminal fee counters, and...

Servants in the Nest of a Foreigner - OFW Kuwait
2008-03-20 05:58:00
Just as Steve Tamayo parlayed his salary as a hotel janitor in Kuwait and became a restaurant owner and an entrepreneur, Zenaida Magno capitalized on her being an OFW and wrote a book on her life. Magno considers a pen her best friend "especially when I am alone" and although she considers her book, entitled "Servants in the Nest of a Foreigner" as fiction, she incorporated her experiences as a domestic worker in Kuwait in it. In an article by Arab Times, Magno said she had always written even when in high school. As housemaid for a Kuwaiti family for 12 years, she said "I used to write whenever I used to feel homesick." A Tagalog version of Magno’s book first came out. The book, entitled "Katulong sa Pugad ng D...

These past days I've been reading blogs and articles about personal finance, it interest me very much that lead me to decide whether its time to change the topic of this blog to a much interesting and informative niche of personal finance and investment. If I will dedicate this site to post investment stories and finance articles that I discover online, would it benefitl our readers? If I start sharing free entrepreneurship ideas and investment words from Pinoy investor and financial advisor could this help ordninary OFWs? To get out of debt.. To take care of financial future.. To invest responsibly and wisely..To plan for your retirement.. these are not easy objectives but I'm sure most of the OFWs have written these things in their long list of ...

6 Steps to Financial Independence
2008-02-23 13:52:00
In the game of the rat race, the goal is to become financially free. For the past weeks, I've been browsing online articles from financial planners hoping to find some tips how to attain financial independence. Interestingly, I come accross the blog of Charles Amoroso, a Filipino Financial Planner talking about the 6 Steps to Financial Independence. I summarize it below based on my own understanding: 1. The Discipline to Increase Cash Flow There are two ways to increase cash flow. First, is by increasing your income through sidelines or business. Second, is by reducing your expenses. Evaluate your needs and wants. Prioritize you needs and reassess your wants. 2....

POEA suspends direct hiring memo for OFWs
2008-02-18 03:55:00
Good to know that our voice had reached the concern officials that suspend the controversial MC-04 POEA memo. Personally, this is the best move if the gov't are really concern on the welfare and safety of us - OFWs and would-be OFWs. Don't know yet the MC-04? I advise you to read the previous post about this here. I'm still praying that POEA will totally scrap the said memo. In view of mounting protests and calls for its scrapping, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration backtracked on Thursday and suspended the guidelines on direct hiring of Filipino workers by foreign employers. The POEA issued Memorandum Circular No. 1, series of 2008, to put on hold Memorandum Circular No. 4, series of 2007, which prov...

The Joys and Pains of Working Abroad
2008-02-08 11:29:00
While checking online update about OFWs, I stumbled a lovely and touching article below written by Bethsaida. A typical setting where the head of the family chose to work away from his love ones for the better future of family. The joys and pains of working abroad. It was a rainy Thursday afternoon. My husband and I were deeply contemplating whether he would accept the offer to work in Saudi again or not. Just thinking about it made me shiver. I was very much against the idea of him working in Saudi again. Jerry's first trip to Saudi (he was there for two years) was not 'a bed of roses.' We've gone through a lot as husband and wife. And I say, a lot. But then, I understand Jerry's stand on the matter. He wanted to secure our future...

I am happy to see the PR bar on my toolbar shaded once again with green color whenever I visit this blog. To those who are not familiar with the term "PR", Page Rank (PR) is Google's patented algorithm to determine the importance of a Webpage, taking into account factors such as the content of the page, the number of inbound links and the build quality of the page. Site is then assigned a number ranging from 0-10, PR10 as the highest PR scrore according to the PR algorithm set by Google. If you have installed google toolbar where PR is enabledyou might observe a bar there shaded in green, that is the PR. There are also other sites that offer a site PR checker that looks like this . A foreigner may apply to be self-employed in New Zealand but a Long Term Business Visa, is needed rather than a work permit. What are the procedures to be a New Zealand resident? The Guideline of the Direct Hiring for Filipino Wokers known as POEA MC 04 was released last December 2007. It took effect on January 15, 2008 affecting all foreign employers wishing to directly hire Filipino workers. The guideline requires foreign employers to post a Performance Bond equivalent to 3 months salary of the OFW and a US$5,000 Repatriation Bond. The Arroyo administration said that the memorandum goal is to promote security and insurance for the welfare of the OFW. Group of Migrant Workers on the other hand interpret this guideline in a different yet interesting way. Here are the points to think about with regards to the MC 04: It will result to loss of jobs and employment opportunities It puts Filipino workers under the ...

After completing the Kuwait residency stamping process, the next step is civil id card renewal. The card contains the holder's civil number, full name, date of birth, local address, blood group, sponsor's name, type of visa and date of expiry of the card. This card is very important so it must be carried at all times and that it must always be renewed on time. Renewal of Civil ID in Kuwait is much easier now than before. I'm suppose to be happy in reporting that my feedburner stat is rising but I think the sudden rise is irregular. I maintain this blog during free time after my day job and to be honest the traffic that this blog is receiving is not that high to achieve such a big number of readers (1171). With this, I have a reason to believe that something is really wrong with my feedburner stats. With a little research I found out that the spike is due to the slight feedburner stats reporting caused by feedblitz polls that manifests since Wednesday (January 16). Joe Kottke, Director of Network Operations and a Forum Moderator released a statement regarding the "Feedburner Stats Gone Nuts" in the feedburner forum as quoted below: Folks, this appears to be a reporting issue with FeedBlitz. | 2008-01-11 14:31:00 |
Eric Hoffer once said, "The hardest aritmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings". Certainly, in my opinion there is no existing mathematical formula that could ever count how many blessings a person had received or will receive. You know, there are many good things happening to us that we tend to overlook. Those are the ones we disregard due to its simplicity or could also be the benefits we received over and over again that we took for granted like the meals on our table, the clothes that we wear, wonderful friends and even the uniqe visitors and returning visitors your blog is receiving. This is the reason why counting the blessings is very hard for most of us. I think it is not necessary to count all our blessings. What...
