Don't Wait Till Retirement...
2008-07-09 08:23:00
Cruise In EuropeWhen my mother decided to retire back in the early 2000, we thought that traveling was the next best thing for her to do. With 3 fully grown up kids who have finished schooling, and after spending more than 35 years devoting her time to her family and her job, it seemed the perfect time for her to go on a grand vacation. But later we realized that planning a trip at the age of 60 is much different than when you are planning a trip in your 20’s. My mother (now a widow) was not quite excited or interested to travel anymore, but agreed to go if we could come with her. However it was difficult then to piece our schedules together. In the end, instead of a grand cruise or a packaged tour she opted instead for a simple visit to some relatives in the US. That taught me one thin...

Poor Clare Monastery (Cebu)
2008-07-06 04:55:00
Have you ever visited the Poor Clare Monastery at one point in your life? It is tucked in a hilly lot but overlooking the sea...This is their driveway. That Sunday of our visit a group of 3 people mindlessly practiced driving a motor scooter disturbing the otherwise serene and peaceful silence of the monastery. That some people could be so thoughtless is beyond me. But the thought that the security guard allowed it to happen... I mean hey! it is not a practice area - are we forgetting here that it's supposed to be a monastery? To the left of the driveway (if one is coming from the outside) is the building where the nuns would entertain guests and other people seeking counsel perhaps... If we may not have a chance to speak with a nun, there is a box there for prayer petitions. We dropped ou...

Eye In The Sky
2008-07-03 01:50:00
"The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS satellites circle the earth twice daily and transmit signal information. GPS receivers use the information to calculate the user's location. Originally intended for military applications, the US government made the system available for civilian use way back in 1980s. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. "Today GPS is now commonly used as a tracking system for personal or commercial purposes. Although it is quite unnerving to think that there is a watchful eye and a listening ear up in the skies monitoring our lives, the GPS tracking is quite useful in the event of an emergency, an ...

VECO
2008-06-30 12:12:00
VECO or Visayan Electric Company, used to have older men as tellers or cashiers as long as I can remember. But lately, I think they are trying to reinvent their image and even the look of their office. They have moved out of their D. Jakosalem office and settled some of their departments at the third floor of SM City Cebu. This is now how they look:In fairness, paying time has vastly improved. Not much waiting time anymore with more cashiers ready to receive your payments. They now also have a call center and customer service staff to attend to your calls... I still think though the bills are still horrendously high!...

Coffee Break
2008-06-08 23:07:00
I love coffee breaks. Because coffee breaks give us the chance to do some wonderful things like, stretching those tired and aching muscles, chatting with co-workers and get updated with office gossips. It can even afford us to spare a little time to stare at the wall and wish it is time to go home. But then because these breaks are only for a short time, most of us would just have to settle for some light snacks and of course – coffee. In the recent years coffee drinking is no longer confined within the homes or the offices but has evolved instead into a new lifestyle. Proof of which is the proliferation of coffee shops which are fast becoming the new hang-outs, places for meet-ups, for unwinding, and even for business meetings.Coffee is no longer just ...

Ageless
2008-06-05 03:52:00
Aging is a natural process that is bound to happen no matter how hard we try to elude it. Although it affects both men and women - women tend to have greater concerns over aging, emotional health issues, and most especially skin care. However it is not mere vanity when we take care of our body or when we take pains to look beautiful even at an older age. It demonstrates to others a sense of respect for health and well-being. While it is true that nothing can stop aging or help us live forever, it might give a little comfort to know that there are some things we can do to at least delay the process. We are advised to maintain our ideal weight, exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and take vitamin supplements. And most important we are also advised to take care of our skin. Having a heal...

Puto Maya And Sikwate
2008-06-02 11:01:00
Usually piping hot puto maya and sikwate are sold on early mornings. But my sister discovered somebody selling them at night-time when people are rushing home from work. This woman-seller positioned herself at the corner of a busy junction (between the highway and the baranggay road), and quite unbelievably managed to have them all sold out. Because her puto and sikwate are yummy, they're quite a hit among her loyal customers. For those living abroad, here is wishing you were here to share this treat... (kuwang na lang mangga!)For those not familiar what puto is - it is pilit (glutinous rice, which is either all white or tapul like the one above), cooked like rice in coconut milk, sugar, ginger, and a little salt. While sikwate is our local chocolate made f...

When I Needed A New Blender
2008-05-31 16:30:00
A few months back, my mother suffered a stroke and her doctors advised us, that she has to take a liquid food diet for the mean time. I realized I needed a new blender! I used to window shop first before I go buy anything (especially appliances), but because taking care of my mom took most of my time now, my usual practice of window shopping was definitely phased out. There was only one other recourse left for me - surf the internet! While it is true that the internet has given us the power of choice - however having access to literally thousands of online stores, products, and services, sometimes makes it difficult for us buyers and consumers to make a single choice. Because of this, we tend to search the internet again and turn to product review sites fo...

Scenes From A Flores De Mayo
2008-05-29 13:19:00
Every year during the month of May, we pay homage to the Blessed Virgin Mary by offering flowers every afternoon for the entire month. The rosary is recited and hymnals are sung during the ritual. Participants are mostly young girls and young ladies. Little girls are often dressed like angels while the young ladies wear white... It is called Flores De Mayo...Young girls look forward to this event, and mothers are only too willing to let them participate. Here the little angels patiently wait for their cue to walk down the aisle towards the altar. They are now preparing to walk to the altar...At the altar they sing songs and say prayers for the Holy Mother Mary... The offering of flowers...Capturing the sweet innocence of young children...Time to go home with Mother in t...

Scenes From A Rainy Day...
2008-05-24 04:38:00
Summer is definitely over! The weather forecast for the coming days is - more rainy days to come for the whole archipelago due to low pressure area. True enough, we did not see the sun today. And indeed it rained...There was a mad dash as kids were caught in the rain...But some just took it slowly. No mad dash, unmindful of the rain two girls continue with their walk, and still were able to manage some smiles...And the plants were (I think) the most happy. After the summer heat - refreshing coolness of the rain! They can now drink to their fill......

Garden Planters
2008-05-23 06:09:00
If you like to have a garden but never got the space or perhaps the guts to start one, do not despair! Try to start with something smaller – like pots or planters. Gardening should be a pleasant and stress-busting exercise, not a yoke-around-the-neck kind of experience. By creating small garden beds, gardening beginners can focus on just a smaller space which is easier to work and maintain compared with a traditional or conventional garden. This method is often called container gardening. Container gardening is one of the most versatile and creative forms of garden design. It is much like creating a floral arrangement, and it provides a good way to decorate house interiors, windows, porches, patios, and balconies - ...

Mailboxes - Not A Dying Breed
2008-05-21 23:54:00
If you think mail boxes are a dying breed, sorry but you are dead wrong! Even if some companies are already slowly converting to sending statements of accounts via e-mail, however most of our bills still find their way through our mail box. It is also a fact that there are some documents which could not be sent via the internet but which still need to be physically delivered to recipients. Yes, there are a few remaining things that the electronic mail has not been able to replace yet, which is why mailboxes are here to stay for awhile. Mailboxes can come in varying designs. There are those for individual home use, and there are those catered for commercial, apartment or condo usage. There is an online store, the mailboxixchange.com which is dedicated to br...

Cebu's Old Buildings (Part2)
2008-05-21 12:06:00
Here is the second part of our series on Cebu's old buildings... In the first part, we looked at historical buildings which are still being used and thankfully well-preserved. In this part we would lament over those old buildings which were not fortunate enough to survive...I do not know which fate is much worse - being in ruins or end up looking like these below! This is a circa 1920 building. I just wish the signages were less blatant. This is one sight which really breaks my heart. If I could, I would strip off all the signages, take off the facade and transfer it in some other place where it can better be appreciated. I think there is no other facade like this in existence in Cebu and it deserves a better respect.Credits: Cebu Heritage...

Some of Cebu's Old Buildings
2008-05-21 08:17:00
I have this fascination for old buildings... Mute witnesses to long gone era. Some of the times and events they may have witnessed were good, while some are best forgotten (like war)... I have often wished our local government would exert super-extra efforts to preserve historical and even non-historical old buildings and encourage our youth to cherish them, otherwise they may just fade into oblivion... Which is sad because they don't make these kind of buildings anymore. Just look at the intricate facade and columns...Most of our buildings right now are made of steel and glass. Also beautiful but just in a different way. Here are some of the old buildings which are still in existence, still being used, and thankfully preserved!Cebu Provincial Capi...

When The Lights Went Off...
2008-05-18 08:33:00
When our kitchen lights went busted (sorry, but it is not that kitchen above... it's dreamy isn't it?), I would just have immediately replaced them right there and then, had it not hit me that our lighting system is what – like more than ten years already? Gosh, and it has never undergone even a single change. I know I am guilty of relegating our lighting system to the bottom of our list for house improvements, probably because I thought that well, if they are still working properly then perhaps there is nothing to fix. And if there is nothing to fix then why bother? However I came to realize that lighting systems like any other part of the house also need to be regularly updated or improved. I have to agree that it is not advisable to wait for fixtures ...

Cebu's Seats Of Power
2008-05-17 22:52:00
This is the Cebu City Hall... Our mayor rules the city from here.Recently it has undergone major renovations to keep up with the modern times... Which is just right because, Cebu City will always remain as an important center for education and commerce outside Metro Manila and Luzon (that is in spite of the major developments in the neighboring islands in the Visayas and even Mindanao). Due to its strategic location and infrastructure, it will continue to be the hub of sea and air transport in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. This is the Cebu Provincial Capitol. Our governor holds office here...It stands majestically and dramatically at the end of Osmena Boulevard. Built in the late 1930's, it is an architectural design meant to be treasured. They don't make buildings this way anymore. ...

Fiesta Sa Compostela Cebu
2008-05-14 02:53:00
It is May and we are going to Compostela in Cebu to attend a town fiesta! We are here now. Do not be mislead by the absence of the people on the roads... Chances are most of them are busy with their food preparations. A fiesta is not complete without the honored presence of the “inasal” (called lechon in Manila and Luzon). The poor pig probably never knew his fate (as he was being fattened up) that he would end up on the dining table. At least he was not alone in dying for the glory of the fiesta, because the poor chickens suffered the same fate too… But first we have to attend the mass…The “banda” and the “carosa” were patiently waiting outside for the procession that will follow after the mass. Take note that “banderitas”are always present during fiestas or any town a...

Going To Olango Island
2008-05-13 17:18:00
Olango Island, for those who are not familiar is an island situated off Mactan Island or Lapulapu City in Cebu. It is a wildlife sanctuary, a haven for migratory birds from Siberia, Northern China, and Japan. The sanctuary supports the largest concentration of migratory birds found so far in the Philippines. It is one of the seven best-known flyways in the world for migrating birds. These birds flock to the island seeking refuge from the winter climate of other countries. From Cebu Hilton, we took one of these boats (or motorized bancas) to ferry us to the island...Here is a view of the city we just left behind (Lapulapu City)...And this is the island we shall be visiting. It was high tide and it started to rain that is why the view is dark and lonely....

Rice Shortage?
2008-05-01 10:11:00
With rice a dietary staple for billions of people, analysts are warning of potential social unrest if crop prices continue their relentless rise. Back in the early 1990's, when I was still working in Makati, I have already observed how lands were gobbled up by real estate developers and converted into subdivisions. It was understandable because the urban population had increased at a tremendous rate and there was a great demand for housing facilities. Even industrial plants were moving out of the urban centers and moving outside the city proper. What used to be city outskirts or suburbs became new industrial or commercial centers. Even during those times I knew we were going to pay for the rice fields that were slowly being converted to either housing or ...

We All Love To Pose!

It seems most of us Filipinos love to pose (for the camera)! Why? Beats me. The feeling transcend beyond regional differences (whether Tagalog, Bisaya, or taga-Mindanao), age groups, and gender.Example - this group of cute golden girls went malling and from the looks in their faces, they enjoy having their pictures taken...Even the kids frolicking in the streets took some time out from their play, just to pose for the camera!Young college students are probably the greatest fans of the camera... wouldn't want to miss any photo session!Even cute sexy working girls are not spared from the camera bug!Look at the guys...they come prepared with their smiles too!...

Streets of Cebu
2008-04-25 01:27:00
Some of you who have left Cebu for more than 10 years now will be a little surprised at how the little provincial city has transformed itself into a miniature Manila in the making. Maybe that is a bit exaggerated but if you pass by these thoroughfares from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. you will be caught in horrendous traffic! Something quite unheard of about 10 to 20 years ago...Natalio Bacalso Avenue - we were coming from Mambaling going to the junction between Jones and N Bacalso Ave. That new big building at the end part of the street is where the old ABS-CBN office used to stand. Very familiar for those who have studied in USC, UC, SWU and CNU... and who are probably working outside the Philippines now.Mabolo - This is a road traversing from Cebu Business Park going to Mandaue City. | Having A Health Insurance... |
2008-04-22 02:39:00
When my mother was hospitalized, her government insurance benefits were put into real good use. Although they were not able to pay off all of the bills, but a large portion was discounted from our total payables. And that was quite a big help! In this age of escalating costs, hospitalization is something we all dread to face. That is why investing in a good health insurance is now regarded as a wise move. Actually the term health insurance refers to a wide variety of insurance policies which range from those that cover the costs of doctors and hospitals, to replacements of lost income if you can not work because of some illness or an accident (even though these are not spec...

Ease In Making That Call!
2008-04-18 00:24:00
For a nation who embraces the prepaid phone card industry wholeheartedly, what is basically a prepaid phone card?A pre-paid phone card is a convenient alternative when making long distance phone calls. What makes it convenient is that it can be carried and used anywhere, and because it is paid in advance, the nicest thing about it is that it does not add to the monthly bills. Hence these are immensely popular among people who work overseas, people who have family members working overseas, travelers, and of course - the students! How does it work? A toll-free access phone number and a personal identification number (PIN) are usually printed on each phone card. To make a phone call, you dial the access number and then enter the PIN (phone card companies keep track of ...

Gadgets Box
2008-04-18 00:10:00
I've added a little box for hot new gadgets too. I'm not much of a techie so I guess it just might stay for a little while only. I'm not actually a big fan of miniature gadgets (noticed they get smaller and smaller every year?), because I still go for the big sizes ( components with big booming earth shattering sounds and large as in super laaarge TV's). But I must admit that these new gadgets on the markets are quite practical and useful too. So who am I to argue?... By the way I placed the box a little above My Beauty Shop (somewhere below in my blog)....

2008-04-16 02:59:00
I have this weakness for scents. If I have my way I would buy every brand-new scent that comes out in the market. But alas I find most of them expensive, so they are tucked away as luxuries for me. I may indulge in buying one every now and then but that’s about it, because I stand to sacrifice other loves like shoes, bags, and books (to name a few… ughhh!) if I gave in totally to this weakness. However this does not stop me from looking still for new products that come out in the market. If we share the same sentiments, I would like to invite you to take a peek in My Beauty Shop, located below in my blog just above My Music and My Bookshelf....

New Titles On My Bookshelf!
2008-04-15 11:56:00
"Life makes no sense sometimes. People take drugs, have unprotected sex and mug each other. Some neighborhoods thrive, others become ghettos. Incompetent workers get ahead while good ones are left behind. It all seems so illogical—but is it? In The Logic Of Life, Tim Harford reveals that, despite their seemingly crazy actions, most people are quite rational, responding to hidden incentives in subtle and entirely logical ways. Harford harnesses the power of so-called “rational choice theory,” which he and other economists are using to unlock everyday mysteries.""From the former Prime Minister of Pakistan—who finished this book just days before her assassination—comes a bold vision for how to bridge the widening gap between the Islamic world and the West. Drawn from Bhutto’s expe...

Ode To Ayala Center's (Cebu) Lagoon...
2008-04-13 03:15:00
This used to be my favorite part in Ayala Center in Cebu, maybe because of the garden and its lagoon. From here one can walk leisurely under the trees across towards Marriott Hotel. However, all that is going to change now. Construction for building expansion is being currently undertaken and the area is under wraps. So it is possible there will be changes and I may not be seeing it again...One thing I do like about the design of Ayala Center is that it makes use of natural lighting. In the morning, sunlight passes through the clear glass roofs and illuminates the building, thus conserving the use of electricity. Something which I find very practical and economical especially since we enjoy sunshine most times of the yea...

Another way to escape the summer heat is to burrow oneself inside a mall. SM City Cebu's North Wing offers a refreshing new "tambayan", maybe because it is basically new and admittedly more elegant than the older wing. However I am not sure if I can afford those boutiques. | 2008-03-17 02:55:00 |
Modern homes were once considered daring experiments, but over the past years these are now being appreciated for the clean lines, harmonious proportions, open plans and abundant natural light. If your preferences lean towards modern designs, you will probably opt for the sleek, simple, functional furnishings and accessories most often made available in subdued colors such as white, silver, grey, or black. You can make a bold statement by using black for your cabinets or cupboards. Black gives crisp look, evokes drama and cool sophistication, and provides the perfect complement for stainless steel appliances.Stainless steel appliances have gained a following among homeowners nowadays because they are easy to clean and sanitize. Their surfaces also don’t...

Of Breaking Ties and Moving...
2008-03-11 14:22:00
It does not matter whether you are moving to Phoenix, Arizona...Phoenix, ArizonaOr perhaps to Portland, Oregon... What matters most is that the transition be made easy, less painful and not traumatic to the family (most especially to the kids). Moving into a new place, a new home or perhaps into a new job can really be stressful for the person concerned (even if single), and to the whole family as well (if the person moving is married with kids). The relocation process means a lot of changes and can (most!) certainly put a strain on everyone.Portland, OregonWhile some company offers assistance on relocation, most often you are left to fend for yourself. This is the reason why research and preparations are very important. It is advisable to immediately check the internet to make a researc...

I actually had no plans of changing the look of my blog. Even I myself, was also caught by surprise by my own decision to make the switch. In the very early hours of dawn after I finished tinkering with the site, I thought it kinda looked cool and dramatic. | Owning A Piece Of The Earth |
2008-03-10 05:50:00
There will always come a point in our life when we would seriously consider buying a house. I observed that even the young singles nowadays (especially those who are financially capable) are already interested to buy their own place, a sentiment that is also strongly shared by newly married couples who are starting to raise their families. I think that most people these days find the cost of forever renting much more daunting than the thought of getting a mortgage. A house, even with its depreciating costs, is always considered an investment because it provides a semblance of stability and security. When I first started thinking of getting a home loan, honestly I had grave hesitations (which is I think is understandable for first timers). I remember there was this crazy gnawing fear of the ...
