How to be a Successful & Powerful Manager
2012-05-22 10:29:00
Covering all the aspects to be a successful manager to win the hearts of Team.
Body Language
Like it or not, your body speaks volumes, even when you are silent. Here's how
to express an attitude that's appropriate for a leader.
1. Stand tall. Keeping your shoulders
back and holding yourself up to your full height will give you an air of
confidence.
2. Take your hands out of your pockets. Putting your
hands in your pockets is often seen as a sign that you have something to hide.
3. Stand with your arms crossed behind your back. This
will help you adjust your posture, and it leaves your hands in a position that
is open and not intimidating.
4. Make eye contact. Always look
directly into the eyes of the people you are speaking with. This shows you're
interested and also gives you a sense of confidence.
5. Sit up straight. Even if you're at an 8 a.m. meeting
and feeling tired, it's important to sit up straight in your chair. Slouching
makes you look disinterested and can give...

The Fatwa Girl Book Review
2012-04-06 09:51:00
Book review: The Fatwa Girl
Author: Akbar Agha
Publisher: Hachette India; Pages: 232
While memories of the fatwa issued against author Salman Rushdie with reference to his novel The Satanic Verses(1989) continue to be fresh, upon reading a book titled The Fatwa Girl, one cannot help but assume its contents to have symptoms akin to religious controversy.
Akbar Agha's debut novel makes us understand the facets of a
'Fatwa' that can either become an expression of tyranny or come with a
message of religious harmony and tolerance in a given socio-political
setup. And this difference is explained to us by the protagonist of the
novel Amina, aka The Fatwa Girl.
Narrative of the novel: It does not follow a linear progression. It
begins with the end which means that the reader is already aware of the
conclusion in the initial pages. The narrator, Omar (a Sunni boy), also
an admirer and lover of Amina (a Shia girl) is seen mourning ...

Corporate Divas Book Review
2012-04-06 09:22:00
Book: Corporate Divas
Author: Sonia Golani
Publisher: Penguin India
Pages: 227; Price: Rs 250
In
the corridors of Indian politics and in the high-performance business
sweat shops the gender order is slowly shifting in favour of power divas
- the women achievers.Sample an alchemist. Sugar queen Rajshree
Pathy turned a barren stretch of land in Andipatti and Theni district
of Tamil Nadu to a lush sugarcane country more than two decades ago.
Growing
sugar in the fallow stretch of Andipatti was tough. The sugar industry
was deeply politicised and dominated by men. But Rajshree chose to stick
to sugar despite the odds.Rajshree Sugars & Chemicals Limited was incorporated in 1985.
Recalls
Rajshree: "I had no doubt that I will do it. It was as if there was a
karmic reason for me to be in this business. And the force was so
intense I could not ignore it."
Rajshree
is one of the 18 corporate divas, whose stories of grit, hard work,
uncompromisi...

The Alluring North book review
2012-04-06 08:49:00
Book title: The Alluring North
Author: Hugh and Colleen Gantzer
Publisher: Niyogi Books
Pages: 169
Price: 595
Exploring
new destinations is one thing; absorbing the special moments another.
Hugh and Colleen Gantzer haven't just penned down their travelogues in The Alluring North, one of the four books from Intriguing India series, they have in fact brought to life a vivid journey of India's ancient history, culture and customs.
The couple calls it the combination of a travelogue, a guide book and retelling an ancient folklore
- travelogue because it is a description of the places they had stopped
by, guide book because it's informative, and a tale because it lets you
see through the remote Indian villages, mystic towns and swarming
cities.
Hugh
and Colleen begin their travel quest up north, about 18,380 feet above
sea level at Khardung La, the highest motorable road in the world. A
friend and fellow traveller suggests stopping by at his village behind

Chapter Eleven book review
2012-04-06 08:10:00
Book: Chapter Eleven
Author: Amit Shankar
Publisher: Vista
Price: Rs.495; Pages: 361
Chapter 11, which in legal terms means filing for bankruptcy, is the central theme of this supposed peek-a-boo into the corporate world.
The title is apt and justified as it won't even take you 11 chapters to
figure out that the book is a result of clear bankruptcy of ideas.
For
starters, it could have done with some sharp editing and generous
chopping of the tech lingo, which though simplified still manages to
sound like gibberish.
The
plot is a done-to-death Bollywood cliche. Virendra Vikram Singh or VVS
is your typical small town boy dreaming of making it big one day. The
dreams of VVS, a Rajput from Udaipur with exceptional intellect, come
true when he lands a job with a Fortune 500 company in Gurgaon with the
help of a sleazy college senior who's now a strings-pulling 'fixer'
office senior.
The Blackberrys, laptops, corporate suits and king-size breakfasts make ...

7 Rules of Life to become Rich
2012-01-29 10:30:00
Most parents want to teach their children responsibility - how to become self sufficient and succeed in life (after all, no one plans on raising a dead beat). However, very few actually accomplish this task. Why? Because, as parents, we are limited to the experiences our parents passed on to us; the antiquated notion that "responsibility" is simply getting a job, saving a little money, and maybe purchasing a car or some equally important item.
Wealth Building Rule 1: Put Off Marriage
Your biggest obstacle to attaining wealth is YOU. Too often, people live their lives in a manner that is not conducive to creating riches and then get frustrated at "the system" when they only really have themselves to blame. One of the most important financial decisions you will ever make is marriage (more specifically who you marry and when). By putting off the walk down the aisle for a few years, you can save a decade worth of frustration. Your first goal should be to become fi...

Best Free Documentaries to watch online
2011-11-27 07:10:00
Here’s ten of the best free feature-length documentaries available to watch online.
Sicko
Michael Moore might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Sicko
is a timely insight into the world’s medical systems. If you’re not a
fan of Michael Moore, rest assured that in this film he mostly holds off
on his trademark angry interviews (not entirely, though). Instead, it’s
a qualitative look at various medical systems around the world made
largely by interviewing everyday people about their experiences with
their own system. I found the insights quite revealing and would
recommend this for anyone who wants to learn more about how health care
works around the world.
If you’re into Michael Moore, check out Bowling for Columbine too.
Religulous
Religulous
is a documentary about the ridiculousness of organised religion. Bill
Maher doesn’t just single out one religion “” he talks to people at many
places of worship, including many smaller places lik...

strangers child book review
2011-11-18 10:03:00
Book: The Stranger's Child
Author: Alan Hollinghurst Publisher: Picador
Pages and Price: 564 pages, Rs 499 Running through like a subterranean stream that threatens to rise and engulf the solid serenity of Hollinghurst's creations, who inhabit the splendid Victoriana of his country houses, the chilling interiors of her fabled citadels of learning, is the recurrent theme of homosexuality. Alan Hollinghurst, whose absence from this year's Booker shortlist has mystified many, is regarded as the supreme stylist of his generation in England. Not just as an explorer of an aggressive gay sensibility as was once the case, until he made his mark with the Booker award for The Line of Beauty. Hollinghurst's vision has about it a magisterial sweep that rekindles the imagination of what exactly it once meant to be English. If Dylan Thomas began his most famous poem on carnal love with the imagery of the green fuse that drives the flower he did also acknowledge its ferocity i...
