Get Organized: Household Routines Improve Your Happiness
2008-06-23 08:33:00
Getting organized -- specifically getting into a household routine -- is scientifically proven to improve your overall well-being.According to the book The 100 Simple Secrets of Happy People, it's important to establish a schedule to take your tasks from "To Do's" to "To Done."Dr. David Niven writes: "We often feel overwhelmed by the chores that have to be done on a regular basis. We clean the kitchen, then the living room needs to be vacuumed...and 16 other things need to be done. With a routine, you will not be lost in wondering what's next."Niven stresses that the schedule be "reasonable." So if you're guilty of trying to be superhuman, trying to do too much...then throttle back a bit on your expectations!Exactly how much will a household routine boo...

Get Organized: Extreme Time Management
2008-06-17 14:22:00
These days, it seems everyone has a new theory on how to better manage your time.My personal favorite is the book Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivityby David Allen. And, of course, there is Getting Things Done available for Amazon's Kindle for those who want to save even more time and read while on-the-go.Getting Things Done dishes out fairly traditional Management">time management advice. However, there are always those few that choose a more controversial path...A 43-year old Italian man has found a new -- not to mention extreme -- way to get more done in less time. He kidnapped his recent ex-girlfriend and forced her to iron his clothes and wash his dirty dishes. (Reuters has the full story.)Now, I...

Get Organized: SolesUnited
2008-06-12 15:20:00
I love accessories - especially shoes! I have so many pairs of shoes that it's hard to imagine not having any shoes to wear at all.Yet there are many people in this world who face that reality daily...who have never learned how to tie a shoe...never felt the softness of slippers...never experienced the pain of high heels...never played sports with cleats...never run in sneakers. They've never even owned one pair of shoes...no, not even one. However, Crocs footwear is trying to help this situation by taking old, worn-out Crocs and making them into new SolesUnited recycled shoes. To date, SolesUnited has donated over 1 million pairs of recycled shoes, and they hope to donate 2 million more in 2008.Here's the CEO of Crocs, Ron Snyder, explaining the program in this video:So if you're about to...

Get Organized: Planning a Yard Sale
2008-05-21 22:24:00
Yard sale season is now in full effect. And what better way to spend a beautiful, sunny spring day than to purge your life of the old and make some extra spending cash?Planning a yard sale will always take effort, no doubt about it. If you wait until the week prior to the sale to start your preparation, then the effort is plagued by frustration and frenzy. But by spreading the prep time over 2 - 4 weeks, the strain on your energy level and time is significantly less. Plus, you get to relax the night before your yard sale -- no last minute tagging required!I created a checklist that takes you through the major steps of planning a yard sale. The checklist also includes little hints that you may not have considered, such as...

Get Organized: Auto Organization Decreases Gas Spending
2008-05-19 07:53:00
Organizing your vehicle, its maintenance, and its use can save you BIG on gas money. Here's how:(1) Do your research.Look at websites like GasNearU and GasBuddy to determine the stations that have the lowest gas prices in your local area. (I found the cheapest option on GasBuddy.)(2) Plan ahead. Before stepping out of the house, make a list of all the errands that you need to run. Then map out your tasks by determining what's nearby or on your way and plan the most gas efficient route. Feeling overwhelmed? Or maybe just lazy? The program Remember the Milk will do this entire step for you...(3) Stay on schedule, be on time.Knowing when your car needs to go into the shop for tune ups, oil changes, and tire rotations is only half the battle. Making and keeping the maintenance appointments are ...

Get Organized: Tips From The Material Mom
2008-05-13 22:30:00
There are no ifs, ands, or buts allowed -- no "borderline" behavior, if you will -- in Madonna's house when it comes to a messy bedroom. When the Queen of Pop's daughter Lourdes leaves her room looking like a disaster area, there are serious consequences. The material mom explained, "We take all of her clothes and put them in a bag, and she has to earn all of her clothes back by being tidy."(Sounds like life's not always a "holiday" for the heir apparent to Madonna's mounting fortune.)If you'd like your kids to get organized and keep their rooms looking like "la isla bonita," then maybe using a similar strategy will help you get your wish...no "lucky star" necessary!!Note: Celebrity quote is courtesy of Us Weekly magazine....

Get Organized: Have Rolodex, Will Travel
2008-05-13 08:45:00
The Rolodex has long been used to record and organize contact information, its flippy cards normally housing the names and numbers of friends, family, and work colleagues. I'd like to add a new twist to an old tradition -- using a Rolodex to store travel information! It's hard enough to remember all the cool things to see and do in your own town, let alone the cool things to see and do in cities around the world.Think about it. You read a magazine that raves about a certain restaurant in San Fran...your best friend claims that Graceland Too is the craziest thing you could possibly see in Holly Springs, Mississippi...your brother tells you about a great hiking trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains...you could just log these tidbits in your Rolodex, organized by...

Get Organized: The Good Card
2008-04-23 07:32:00
We've talked about clutter-free giving before. It's the act of giving someone a present that will not, in turn, clutter their home, office, or life! It is a reciprocal philosophy as well, applying not only to the act of giving gifts to others but also requesting them for yourself.I was recently introduced to a new way to support clutter-free giving, and I must say that it's a pretty cool idea! The Good Card, which is sponsored by the Network for Good, is the equivalent of a gift card for charity. The Good Card can be ordered online and sent to the recipient either by email or snail mail. The recipient can then donate the amount on the card to one of 1.7 million charities on the Network for Good website.Giving back instead of giving stuff. It's tax-deductible, it's earth-friendly, and in a ...

Get Organized: A Difference of Opinion
2008-04-14 09:07:00
Do you live or work with a person who doesn’t share your goal to get organized? If so, it can cause you to quickly lose motivation and momentum toward organizing. It's difficult to get organized and stay organized when you are surrounded by individuals who either are inclined to be disorganized or are indifferent to clutter. When my husband Mack and I first started dating, we lived in Germany where coins are a huge part of their currency. Mack started throwing extra change on his dresser at his house, and soon what started out as a small pile of change was transformed into a Mount Everest. Not wanting to be a nag, I watched silently in horror over the next two years until I could no longer take it! I dumped the entire heap into a box, and I spent the next several weeks sorting and rolling...

Get Organized: Spring Cleaning, Organizing, and Maintenance

It's still a bit wintery where I live in North Dakota. We just had snow a few days ago, and although the temperatures are now above zero, it's still a little cold to seem like spring to me! Chilly weather or not, spring is here. And with not quite a week of spring behind us, it's time to think about starting up our annual spring cleaning overhaul. Here are a few ideas to jump-start your efforts:(1) Update your files. We all have the looming April 15 tax deadline ahead of us. This is a great time to sort through not only your financial paperwork but also other documents in your files. Clear out the old, back file what is necessary in storage, and shred whatever you don't need to keep.(2) Prep your house for spring rains.Check your roof for curled, cracked o...

Get Organized: The Butler Bag
2008-03-21 08:25:00
Does your purse ever stress you out? Most of us gals don't think of a purse in that way, but how many times have you searched for your keys, your pen, or your ringing cell in the bottom of your bag? It's both annoying and frustrating, and any woman who carries a purse can relate! That's why I think the Butler Bag (aka The World's Most Organized Handbag) is one of the best inventions ever. A purse that is functional and stylish? Organized and cute? It's about time! I created a new Squidoo lens about the Butler Bag to explain why it's so fantastic...When I pulled my Butler Bag out of the shipping box, I thought: "This is exactly what I expected it would be!" But I was WRONG...Once I started using my Butler Bag daily, I realized: "This is better than I expect...

Get Organized: A Kick In The Butt
2008-03-17 08:52:00
The average American burns 55 minutes a day looking for things they know they own but can’t find. (Newsweek)55 min/day = 14 days/year That's a TON of time. And it's a seriously shocking statement.Think of what you could do with that extra time! Take a long winter's nap. Stop spreading yourself so thin. Catch up on some projects. Or better yet, catch up with an old friend. Finally do those Christmas cards you always promise yourself that you will do. Take an extra vacation. Volunteer. Stop and smell the roses. Pick up a new hobby. Join a club. Exercise more often. Read a book from front to back. Train for a marathon...or if you're feeling less energetic, then watch a movie marathon. Go exploring. Go crazy with the kids. There are endless possibilities...It's easy to say: "If I get organi...

Get Organized: Purging e-Waste
2008-03-06 08:33:00
I became consciously aware of e-waste - discarded TVs, monitors, computers, cell phones, batteries - when I lived in Germany. Germany has a very strict policy about trash and recycle, as do most countries in the European Union. When I first arrived in country, I found it very frustrating! I had to separate everything, including foods like veggie scraps that are biodegradable. Initially, it took me a long time to divide out all the trash. But over time, the process got faster and my appreciation for Germany's earth-friendly regulations grew more and more. After my European trash experience, you can imagine my surprise when I read this statistic in a recent Parade magazine: More than 1.5 million tons of e-waste are thrown into U.S. landfills every year.Th...

Get Organized: Streamline Your Morning Routine
2008-03-04 07:54:00
As Scarlet O'Hara so famously said in Gone With the Wind, "Fiddly dee, I'll worry about that tomorrow!" And if you want to have a hectic morning, then you should definitely try to emulate her. But if you want to have a smooth morning routine, I would suggest a little planning and prep the night before to help you get organized and ready to be on your way...(1) Select your clothes.Pick out your clothes for the next day. Iron anything that needs it. Don't forget accessories: jewelry, cuff links, hose, socks, shoes, panties, boxers, scarf, tie, or purse. If you have kids, the same should be done with their outfits.(2) Pack your bags.Fix your lunch, get your gym bag ready, and make sure all necessary items for the next day are tucked into your briefcase, backpack, or purse. | Get Organized: Make-Your-Own Labels |
2008-02-27 08:17:00
If you've done any organizing in your life, you've inevitably labeled something in the process. When I organize, I'm somewhat of a fanatic about tagging things. A label here, a label there...labels everywhere! And while there are those of you who can relate to my overzealous affection for labels, others are less obsessive about using them to get organized.Either way - if you are a dedicated or a not-so dedicated labeler - standard markers can be somewhat boring to look at. Label maker tags, index cards, masking tape, white address labels...not festive at all!If you are feeling a bit blasé about your own labels, then allow HGTV to help! On the HGTV website, there are pre-made labels for you to download and use for your own organizing projects. You can...

Get Organized: Just Do It
2008-02-25 08:31:00
I'm not normally a procrastinator, but I have my moments. And one of those moments happened this weekend.I recently returned from an out-of-town trip, and I needed to clean the house...do some laundry... and frankly, I was just not in the mood! I wanted to be lazy and just veg out in front of the TV.So I plopped myself down on the couch to do just that. But, you know what? I couldn't really relax! I knew that I had things to accomplish to keep our home in working order, and those things were subconsciously bugging me, eating away at my brain. On my way to the kitchen for a snack, I spotted a pair of my husband's Nike shoes by the back door. When I saw them, I was immediately reminded of 2 different things: (1) I saw the swoosh, and the famous Nike slogan "Just do it" popped into my hea...

But amidst all the glitz and glamour, there is one burning question: Where do the winners put Oscar when all is said and done? Some stars have the über organized spot for their gold statue. | Get Organized: Behind-the-Door Shelves |
2008-02-05 14:51:00
My brother inherited all the handyman genes in my family. While he can take credit for many DIY masterpieces, I can only take credit for DIY disasters! On a scale of 1 - 10 (1 being the worst, 10 being the best), I consider myself to be about a 1.5 when it comes to DIY home improvement projects. I don't have the patience or skills, so I need a project to be easy!I recently noticed this do-it-yourself-er in The Family Handyman magazine (pictured to the right). | Get Organized: My Note Wall |
2008-01-30 09:19:00
I don't know about you, but I use sticky notes like crazy! If I need to remind myself to take out the trash, I put a sticky note on the bathroom mirror so that I see it first thing in the morning. If I need to make an important call, I put a sticky on my computer screen so that I can't miss the reminder. I use sticky notes at least 10 times a day to help me manage my time and "to dos."Needless to say, when I ran across the website My Note Wall, I got really excited. My Note Wall allows you to create your own page of cyberspace stickies. | Get Organized: A Daily Dose of Motivation |
2008-01-28 14:08:00
Zig Ziglar is somewhat of an American institution, still wow-ing people today with his motivational messages at 81 years old. He once explained, “People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.”Isn’t that human nature right on the nose? Motivation dies off. It may be a quick death for some, a slow death for others…but eventually the newness of it all goes away. When I was 8 years old, I desperately wanted to learn how to play the piano. I begged my parents for months until they caved, but only if I would agree to their terms: if they bought me a piano, then I must play it for 5 years.Easy enough, I thought, my motivation high. I wanna play the piano! 5 years is nothin’.The beauti...

Get Organized: Packing for a Trip
2008-01-24 08:34:00
If you were in high school circa 1992 like me, then you must remember watching Anderson Cooper on Channel 1 news. At the time, I was less interested in world affairs and more interested in what I was going to do on Friday nights. But I have changed my perspective a bit since then, and I really enjoy watching Anderson Cooper 360° each night on CNN.In my opinion, Cooper always seems a very together person. So I was surprised to run across this quote, which came out of an interview about traveling.“Well, it is funny…I get pulled over by security for some reason about every time I fly. And I'm inevitably embarrassed, because the guy opens up the bag, and I have to explain to him, like, I'm messy, I'm sorry.”I never imagined A.C. as being messy! But packing for a trip can be a real mons...

Get Organized: Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?
2008-01-22 09:48:00
At some point, you’ve probably seen Peter Walsh on Oprah or on TLC’s Clean Sweep. Prior to becoming a professional organizer, I assumed he was popular in the US because his Australian accent set him apart. It seemed to me as if all organizers said the same kind of stuff, but his Aussie accent made his advice sound so much more amazing than everybody else’s!After settling on a career as a professional organizer, I really started to pay attention to philosophies promoted by different organizers. It was then that I realized that Peter Walsh had more going for his ideas than his accent. His latest book is called Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat: An Easy Plan for Consuming Less and Living More. Here’s a short description:“When it comes to clearing clutter, it isn't about the ...

I spent 4 of the last 6 years living outside of the good ole US of A. There were a lot of different TV shows, movies, toys, gadgets, fads, and changes that affected American culture during that time that I just missed altogether. So once I returned stateside, I felt like I had been stuck in a time warp, always surprised by the "things that happened while I was away."Even now, a year after my return, I am still catching up. I walked into Subway yesterday to get myself a sandwich and redeem my "buy 8, get one free" card which I had built up during my last year in Europe and had been saving for the right moment. But when I got to the register, the cashier deflated all my hopes by telling me that Subway hasn't accepted those cards in "forever." (Yes, that was the exact word she used.)My ...

The other day, one of my friends asked me what I remembered most about going through boot camp. What a loaded question! There are too many things I remember about boot camp and most of them unpleasant. Running in combat boots. Getting yelled at. Doing push ups until I collapsed. Getting yelled at. Woken up in the middle of the night for inspections. Getting yelled at some more. The worst of all for me...having 30 seconds to take a shower. What girl can take a 30-second shower? It takes me that long just to get in the shower!I recall thinking at one point, Why am I putting up with 6 weeks of this? While all my friends were enjoying summer vacations, I was being subjected to unwanted rules, impossible orders, minimal sleep, nasty food, physical fitness ad nauseam - all topped off with ...

Get Organized: How to Organize a Closet
2008-01-11 12:27:00
Does your closet look like the one in this photo? Wouldn't you rather it be organized?Normally when you find an instructional on how to organize a closet, it's combined with a bunch of other “how to organize” topics in a big book. So you receive only a little information on a lot of organizing tasks. If you really want a detailed description on how to organize a closet...well, you’re simply not going to find what you're looking for!I like to take a different approach to my writing as a professional organizer. For example, when I work with a client, we don't de-clutter their entire house at once...we break it down into smaller projects. I bring that very same philosophy to my written work, and I designed the entire Operation Organize series around this concept - conquer the clutter on...

Get Organized: Living in Small Spaces
2008-01-10 08:58:00
When my mom showed me the picture to the right, I laughed and thought it was some kind of Southern redneck joke. But after reading the article that went with the photo, I was quickly put in my place! This home is one of the tiny houses associated with the Small House Movement. This movement has a growing number of supporters, including movie stars who have proudly downsized into 3000 sq. ft. to people on houseboats or in trailers with just a few hundred sq. ft. around them. Size is relative to the Small House Movement; the main concern of its members is the ecological, economic and psychological toll that excessive housing takes on our lives. The founders of the Small House Movement strongly state that its not a movement about people claiming to be "tinier than thou" but rather people makin...

Get Organized: The Urge to Purge
2008-01-08 16:59:00
My husband and I just got married last July. Since both of us were in our late 20s, we had each acquired an entire household of stuff since college...so we had two of everything! After the wedding, I took on the job of purging and consolidating our things. I set a goal to have everything streamlined and organized within one year. While that may seem like a long time, I like to set realistic deadlines. I knew that starting a business would fill up the majority of my schedule, and what free moments I actually would have...well, I didn't want to spend them all organizing! :) I normally devote a few hours a month to weeding through an area, deciding what to keep/toss, organizing the keepers, and boxing up the rest for charity. At this rate, a year suits me just fine!Because of this whole proces...
