Management Monthly May 2012
2012-05-03 09:54:00
Management Monthly A monthly source of management theory, thoughts, tips and best practicesMay 2012This Month’s Tip: Focus your energies. There are a lot of demands on your time, but your time and energy are limited. Focus on what is important to you and do that first. It is better to do a few key things well than to do lots of things, but none of them well.Coaching a bad attitudeNo matter how good we are at hiring and motivating a team, there almost always comes a time when we have to deal with an employee who has a less-than-stellar attitude. Coaching a bad attitude, I find, is one of the more challenging aspects of management. A bad attitude is hard to quantify, and the person in question often doesn’t agree that there is an issue.  However, if you don’t address and turn ...

Management Monthly March 2012
2012-03-21 12:21:00
Management Monthly A monthly source of management theory, thoughts, tips and best practices March 2012 This Month’s Tip: The Little Things Really Do Matter Most - We know a guy who keeps in his wallet a few short notes from his wife. Sweet nothings, really. He tells us that sometimes, when searching for a membership or business card, he’ll stumble upon them.“Or, on a really bad day at the office, I might purposely dig them out,” he says.No matter the occasion, reading them always puts him back on top of the world. A little thing, yes. But what an amazing impact! The same thing goes for recognition at the office. It doesn’t have to be big, flashy, or expensive. A hand-written thank-you note, or a few words of praise in front of an employee’s peers at staff meetin...

Move Past Your Anger
2012-02-16 13:47:00
As the saying goes - Shit happens. To all of us. The question is not how do you avoid bad things but rather how do you react to them.Sure, it’s frustrating to be passed over for a promotion you really wanted at the office, or to be underwater on your home loan. Perhaps you just found out you need a new transmission in your car. It’s natural to get angry but you have to also realize that you need to move past the anger. Anger keeps your brain from thinking about solutions and from making plans. And without a plan you cannot solve your problems. In order to successful solve a problem you need to engage the rational part of your brain and put your emotional part in neutral. You need to think creatively and then logically to develop a plan of action. Your emotional brain, especially when in...

Management Monthly February 2012
2012-02-08 12:40:00
Management Monthly A monthly source of management theory, thoughts, tips and best practices February 2012 This Month’s Tip: Minute-by-Minute Recognition - Less than 60 seconds. That’s all it takes to make someone’s day, using on-the-spot recognition. The next time you notice an employee doing something right, immediately follow these four simple steps: Tell them exactly what they did that was right (“Wanda, I noticed that you picked up the phones today, since Bess was sick.”) Tell them what value or goal they met. (“That shows a lot of teamwork.”) Explain how that impacts the company. (“We might have missed that emergency call from our biggest customer without your help.” Express appreciation. (“Thanks so much.”) Note...

Be the Difference
2012-01-26 18:56:00
We are all here on this planet to make a difference: to ourselves, to our family, to our community, to our company and, if the opportunity arises, to our country. Each and every one of us has our own unique set of talents and abilities. We have the opportunity, more of an obligation really, to use those talents and abilities to be difference makers to everyone and in every situation we encounter each and every day. The only alternative to that is to just take up space and wait around to grow old. And that my dear reader is simply NOT acceptable.Let’s think about the title of this blog entry. Be the Difference. Three simple words. Five little syllables. But when put into action make a significant impact on everything and everyone you interact with. Yet this seemingly simple idea does requ...

Management Monthy January 2012
2012-01-09 12:07:00
Management Monthly A monthly source of management theory, thoughts, tips and best practices January 2012 This Month’s Tip: Huddle up. At one great grocery store chain in the heartland, employees and customers are encouraged to “huddle up” for recognition moments. Everything in the store stops for a few moments to recognize a great associate. What a great – and almost unheard of – idea. Simply stop. Stop chasing. Stop calling. Stop meeting. Stop worrying. Today, take a moment to stop what you are doing, call your people together, and give someone a much-deserved pat on the back.It promises to be the start of something good. (Article reprinted from A Carrot a Week email newsletter from Carrots.com) Become a Servant Leader Bossing around employees is ...

The Personal Integrity - Success Link
2011-09-14 12:41:00
Achieving success in any endeavor requires vision, commitment, planning and follow through. Let’s focus on follow through, or what can also be called personal integrity. Will you hold yourself accountable? Will you do what you say you will do? Most people do not and that is what separates the truly successful from the dreamers and schemers. One of the best methods I have found to help you hit your targets is to voice them out loud – let people know what you are going to do. That raises the stakes quite a bit. If you keep your plans and goals locked in your head no one knows if you stopped trying or missed your mark. BUT – if you announce to family, co-workers and friends you now have your integrity on the line. You told them you were going to do it. You’ll look pretty foolish if yo...

Find True Success through Creationism
2011-08-17 07:11:00
True success comes to the innovator, to the creator. You need to harness your creativity, your drive and your resources in order to chart your own course. You must “create” your own success and you do this by developing a focused plan and then working your plan. Embrace the idea of creationism. What sort of life do you want to create for yourself and for those around you? Think big. What can you do to help the most people achieve their dreams? Through helping others your dreams will be achieved as well. Look at your hobbies and the activities you enjoy. What are you passionate about? These are the areas you need to drill into and create opportunity from. If you have a natural interest you will find it much easier to push forward when the going gets tough. It has been said many times that if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life. That gets to the essence of creating your success. You can only find true success if you have real connection and passion about...

Fail your way to Success
2011-06-21 11:58:00
We achieve success in all areas of our life by trying something new and learning from our mistakes. This starts during childhood and continues through our entire lives. When you learned to walk you failed many times. You fell down repeatedly until you learned to balance and built up the leg strength to hold yourself upright. When you learned to ride a bike you likely fell and scraped your hands or knees. But it was through trial, error and practice that you learned to ride. You have used this “learn-by-doing” approach your entire life. It has worked in the past and will certainly continue to work going forward. If you never fail, if you never make mistakes you are not trying anything new, you are not pushing into new territory and you are not growing as a person, manager or leader. ...

Relax, Recharge, Succeed
2011-05-25 11:14:00
We live in a world of 24/7 connectivity. Add the fact that we have been going through the worst economic crisis in decades and it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you have to keep pushing and pushing to get ahead. (Nothing like putting a little pressure on yourself)We all have responsibilities. Responsibilities to our business, our employees, our employer, our family and to our community. But let’s make sure we do not forget the most important person on that list. You have responsibilities to yourself. You cannot possibly live up to your responsibilities if you do not take care of yourself.Stress robs you of energy and of good health. You need to plan into your schedule some time to relax, renew and recharge your body and spirit. You have to give your brain some down time ...
