Dog Training – Dog Crate Training
2010-02-10 17:56:00
A dog crate is a metal and plastic cage for your dog to sleep in or be in while you are away, the crate helps give your dog a secure place to live while in your home and a place to retreat to when things get a bit to hectic as they do in many family homes today. Crate training is a very popular and effective technique for teaching your dog right from wrong; this method includes teaching rules of eliminating, sleeping arrangements, and keeping your dog from being destructive when you are out amongst many other benefits. To crate train you must choose a correctly sized crate that your dog or puppy will be able to grow into with time and they will not be too cramped or have too much space. If your dog has a crate that is too small they won’t want to live there or go there and if the crate is too large it leads to eliminating problems. You should make your dog feel as comfortable as you can in their crate; this should include putting a bowl of water with your dog in their crate, a nic...

Dog Boots And Small Pet Carriers - Much More Than Accessories
2010-02-09 22:41:00
When you see a pooch going for a walk with dog boots on or a picture of Paris Hilton with Tinkerbell in a small pet carrier, you might be asking why anyone would buy such frivolous accessories for a dog. However, in many cases these items have not only improved the quality of life for pampered hound but have even saved many canine lives. I think what turns many owners off is seeing boots and carriers that are overpriced. Nevertheless, when used properly, these canine items are very useful, and they can be bought at a discount. Boots for a dog are useful both in winter and summer. In cold wintertime, it’s obvious how a dog’s paws can be hurt by frostbite from the ice or by rock salt or other melting chemicals. This is when the purchase and use of booties goes up exponentially, but more and more owners are finding good uses for a dog boot in the warm months. For example, if your dog is allergic to a fertilizer or pesticide that is put in the city park grass, one of the best ways to ...

Dog Heartworm Disease
2010-02-08 09:18:00
Dog heartworm can be a life-threatening disease for canines. The disease is caused by the roundworm Dirofilaria immitis. Dogs and sometimes other animals such as cats, foxes and raccoons are infected with the worm through the bite of a mosquito carrying the larvae of the worm. While cats are susceptible to the disease they do not appear to be good hosts. As a result cat infections are rare. Dirofilaria immitis is found throughout much of the United States including Massachusetts. Many common mosquito species in Massachusetts can become infected with the worm. Dirofilaria immitis is dependent on both the canine and the mosquito to fulfill its lifecycle. In an infected dog the adult worms are 9-16 inches in length and live in the dog's heart and lungs. The young worms called microfilaria circulate in the blood stream of the dog. These worms must infect a mosquito in order to complete their lifecycle. Mosquitoes become infected when they blood feed on the sick dog. Once inside the mosqu...

Yearly Dog Heartworm Testing
2010-02-08 03:57:00
Does your dog need a yearly heartworm test to prevent dog heartworms? Most veterinarians will agree that yearly testing is the best way to prevent against heartworm disease. Heartworm disease in dogs is very preventable with the right medications and observation. It is recommended that your dog be tested and medicated for heartworm as early as 6 months in age. Yearly heartworm testing is actually endorsed by the American Heartworm Association. Having yearly tests is considered the "golden standard". It is also important to note that heartworm tests are required before a veterinarian will treat heartworm in dogs unless the dog is less than 6 months old. Some veterinarians will simply recommend yearly testing and let the owner decide what is best for their dog. Some may also require a test before dispensing additional heartworm dog medicine if the dog has not been tested within the last year. In most cases yearly testing is advised because heartworm can cause serious damage or death t...

How to Choose the Right Wireless Dog Fences
2010-02-07 04:41:00
choosing the right wireless fences for your dog may be a little complicated if you don’t know what you should look for. Nowadays, you can buy a wide range of dog fences in the market and each of them functions in a different way. In order to make the right choice, you need to consider several things such as your needs, budget and quality of product. Here are some tips on choosing the right wireless dog fences: • Choose a wireless fence that is suitable to your dog. The design of dog fence you’re purchasing should match the size of your canine. Take note that wireless fences are created differently. There are fences that are specifically designed for small, medium and big dog breeds. • Determine the size of your yard or your preferred containment location. Will you put the fence indoor or outdoor? Measure the desired area in diameters before buying a wireless fence. If you decide on setting up a fence with covers a large area, you may need to buy an extra transmitter. • ...

Keep Them in With the Best Pet Enclosure Systems
2010-02-05 09:24:00
Pet enclosure systems are great for any time you cannot let your pet run wild. Whether the pets are in the yard or in the house, there will be times when it is just better to keep them corralled. Between the two basic types of pet enclosure systems, you will be sure to find one that suits your needs. First, there are the pet enclosure systems that double as portable kennels. These can be used indoors or out to keep dogs, cats, or other pets confined when you are not available to watch them. Many dogs sleep in kennels at night; your dog or puppy might like one with a fleece pad for sleeping. Rounded corners make the crates safe for household furniture and floors. A crate with a steel frame is a good investment. When you use these crate type pet enclosures outdoors, your dog or cat will get fresh air without escaping or being harmed by wildlife. The second type of pet enclosure systems is the play pen type. These can be simple metal cages or metal frames covered with soft, forgiving n...

Change Dog Food - The Why's and the How's Explained
2010-01-25 05:37:00
By Barbara Kremers Why NOT to change dog food? Change dog food when necessary and only then is the most commonly heard view (though other perspectives exist). Changing dog food is one of the most common causes of diarrhea and gastro-intestinal upsets. The change should be gradually rather than sudden so the intestinal flora of your pooch can adapt to the new dog food and go live in harmony again. When new ingredients and substances enter the intestines the harmonious composition in numbers and combinations of the local bacteria colonies is disturbed. Shifts occur as one bacteria type (fermentative bacteria) loves carbohydrates whereas others love meat (putrefactive bacteria). The latter type doesn’t produce as much gas, so when your dog is farting a lot it could be the dog food you chose last time contains the wrong amount or types of carbohydrates for his intestines. When and why should you think of altering your dog’s diet? * It is time, for example, for a puppy to junior...

Dog Food Aggression
2010-01-22 10:17:00
Dog food aggression is one of those dog behavior problems that is difficult for us humans to fully understand. It just doesn't seem to make sense that your dog would consider you a threat to his/her food resource. I mean you gave him the food in the first place, and if you feed your dog's the same kinds of foods that I do, it's not all that appealing anyway! But, what is your dog thinking? If your dog glares at you, snarls, growls and positions himself between you and the food he is actually saying to you "this is mine, go away, find your own". He is basically telling you that he considers himself as the leader or alpha dog in your household. Dog food aggression (sometimes called canine possession aggression) is a dominance issue, it is serious and needs to be addressed immediately, it won't just go away. We've all made the mistake of laughing and even encouraging our feisty little dogs when they first display the "cute" signs of dog food aggression. Don't fall into this trap! Foo...
