There are puppies that aren’t meant for certain homes or people, but all puppies are heaven sent.1] Is this your first puppy?2] What is your income like?3] Can you afford the medical bills for the rest of this puppy’s life?4] How patient are you?5] Are you ready to possibly have your favorite shoes or something chewed up?6] Are you ready to teach your puppy how to be housebroken?7] Do you know how to train a puppy or are you taking it to an obedience class?8] Do you want a longhaired or shorthaired puppy?9] Do you have dogs or cats at home already?10] Where do you live?11] Is it an apartment, trailer or ho...

Reward Obedience Training
2010-01-30 13:47:00
Reward Obedience Training – The Good1. Reward obedience training helps to build a strong relationship based on trust.Reward obedience training operates by controlling your dog’s resources. This teaches your dog that all good things come from you and if he wants what you have, he must first do what you want. Since you are viewed as a source of good things, your dog will naturally gravitate towards you.2. Reward obedience training will not damage your dog either physically or mentally. With reward obedience training, the worst that happens to your dog is the removal of a reward. In contrast, physical based aversive training can cause damage to your dog especially when not implemented properly. Long term use of choke collars may cause harm to your dog even when fitted properly.3. Reward ob...

Recommended Visit: the American Museum of Natural History’s Dioramas
2010-01-25 04:51:00
One of my favorite spots in New York City, in addition to the Bronx Zoo, is the American Museum of Natural History. The Museum always has wonderful temporary exhibits, but I still get excited by the amazing habitat dioramas that are central to the spirit of the great museum. They bring you up close to beautiful wildlife, a rare treat and often difficult to do while visiting a zoo. Sadly, some of the dioramas depict scenes that no longer exist due to the encroachment of man on animal’s territories. On a recent visit, I wanted to capture some of the excitement of these beautiful dioramas. The first set of pictures below features animals from the Akeley Hall of African Mammals.I hope you enjoy the pictures!Ostriches:Recommended Visit: the American Museum of Natural History’s DioramasNyalas...

Lizards of the Valley of Fire
2010-01-24 08:48:00
OK, let's start by cheating. The lizard you see here wasn't in Nevada's Valley of Fire when I photographed it, instead it was standing in the middle of the west-bound lane of route 62 in California, which is just outside the northern boundary of Joshua Tree national park. In my defence, though, let me say that I was on my way to the Valley of Fire when I took this photo. I'd already passed another lizard standing in the road when I saw this one. I drove past it at 60 miles an hour but then I thought, "no, darn it, I'm going to get a photo!". So I turned around, drove back to the lizard and parked by the side of the road. The lizard was still in the same spot, so I hauled out my long lens and started very slowing getting closer, taking photos as I went. Turns out that this is ...

A New Species of Leopard
2010-01-24 08:39:00
A New Species of Leopard! The Daily Mail reports that a new species of leopard has been discovered – and it has the largest fangs in the cat world. It lives deep in the Borneo rain forest and has beautiful elliptical spots that are smaller and darker than its cousin, the Bornean clouded leopard. The fangs of the newly discovered leopard can grow up to two inches in length! That is bad news for the other members of the forest:Tails as long as their bodies allow the secretive and solitary creatures to balance in trees, where they perch to pounce on their prey.Monkeys, barking deer and bearded pigs can be killed with a single bite, with the leopard having no fear of seeking out prey that is bigger than itself.Such adept hunting skills put the clouded leopard, which at 35 inches from head to s...

Iguanas have very good vision
2010-01-24 08:19:00
GOOD VISIONIguanas have very good vision. They see colors, andthey have transparent eyelids that close easily.color plays a very important role in the life of iguanas and lizards. It helps to differentiate males and females, and when it is time to attract a mate, the members of the iguana family communicate by showing bright colors, tufts of feathers, and folds of skin. Another particularity that distinguishes iguanas is their covering of epidermal scales. In addition, like all reptiles, they are not capable of generating internal heat, so they depend on external factors to maintain their body temperature. For this reason, you will frequently see iguanas lying stretched out in the sun. When it comes to their diet, most reptiles are carnivores, with the exception of some turtles, which are her...
