From Blasphemy to Honesty, A Man on the Path to Truth
2007-12-28 08:51:00
For those of you who know me you know that it's difficult for me to write about personal things in such a public way. It truly makes me vulnerable. This is ironic since I fell in love with Pablo because of his ability and courage to post personal things on his blogs Lessons @ UY, Filosofito de UY, and Holismo - Recurrencia. He bared his soul and I loved what I saw. I, on the other hand, have been terrified about exposing my innermost feeling. I've been so afraid of being "judged" by others. But at the same time very quick to criticize others. And again, an irony because I constantly preach that what other people think of me should have no impact on me or my behavior. If "they" don't like it then it's their problem and not mine.Pablo is in the process of pushing me outside my comfort zone....

An Email to Pablo
2007-12-27 16:15:00
I wrote this email to Pablo a couple of weeks ago. It was a first attempt and apologizing to him and explaining to both him and myself what I was going through and some of the reasons behind my behavior. From where I am now so much of it seems like a bad dream. I feel like I woke up from a nightmare, looked around, saw that Pablo was gone, and realized it wasn't a dream after all.===========================Dear Pablo,I don't think you fully understand my numb state. I was truly on the verge of a breakdown. The only way for me to get through everything was to stop feeling. Stop feeling the loss of my savings, stop feeling the pain of my parent's death, stop feeling love for you, stop feeling happiness and sadness.Yes, I am feeling now, slowly. First was pain...

Pain; experienced and inflicted
2007-12-27 12:15:00
This year is almost over and for that I am thankful. Most of this year I lived with a man who I love very much. A man who has treated me with love, caring, honesty, respect, and patience. Pablo is the only person who has ever been so good to me consistently. He gave me unconditional love.I can come up with many excuses for how I treated him and I do want to explore the reasons behind it but first I want to publicly apologize to the man I love with all my heart for any pain I have caused him. This past year I experienced a major financial catastrophe. Some people thought Pablo was with me because, as they thought, I had money. The truth is most of my money was stolen by a fund manager in California two weeks after I got to Uruguay in November 2006. Pablo helped me accept it. He helped ...

The Big Apple
2007-08-03 08:33:00
After many hours and days of driving JP and I arrived in New York City last night. As we get closer to seeing my brothers this trip is getting more emotional for me. Over the next few weeks or month I won't be posting here with any frequency.TGonzales, thanks for your initial comment. It was posted immediately after you submitted it. I haven't posted your second comment. I have no way of responding to you directly. If you need more information about Uruguay check out the links on the right side of this blog. There are some really great resources there....

Differences
2007-07-24 20:36:00
Greetings from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Vancouver must be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Today is a gorgeous sunny day. The mountains that form the backdrop for Vancouver still have patches of snow on them. While everything is still fresh in my mind I want to list some of the things that stand out after being away for so long and some of the differences between Seattle / Vancouver and Montevideo. Nothing here is intended to be a value judgment (except for the dog crap on the sidewalks!). Some things are just different between Uruguay and Washington State & British Columbia. In no special order:1. No dog crap on the sidewalks. None. Haven't even noticed any by the trees along the streets.2. Most sidewalks here are in perfect condition. A few places where tree ...

Back In The USA
2007-07-23 17:12:00
Right now I'm experiencing seeing North America after being away for almost nine months. As I write this I'm in a friend's apartment in Seattle. Outside the window somebody is power-washing the moss off the sidewalks (no kidding). It's been cloudy and/or raining since I arrived on Wednesday which is very unusual for Seattle in the summer.Tuesday night I left Montevideo. I shared my flight with four other people from the English-speaking community. It was nice having friends to pass the time while waiting for the flight to board. Check out Chuck's blog. I see he wrote about being back in the USA but I haven't read his entry yet.Miami---The flight from Montevideo arrived in Miami near dawn on Wednesday morning. According to the captain it was already 85 degrees in Miami. I lived in Miami for...

Love, respect, and pain
2007-07-10 08:42:00
This morning I received five visitors to my blog.Madrid, SpainNashville, TNMilpitas, CALos Angeles, CASydney, AustraliaOne of the these visitors took it upon himself (I assume it was a man since men are generally more insensitive and aggresive than women) to post a comment in response to my entry about the deaths of both of my parents last week. Of course the comment was anonymous. Of course it was hateful and designed to inflict pain. The only pain it inflicted on me was just knowing that there are people so pathetic, evil, and hateful as that person. My father's death was unexpected. He had been ill for the past five years but his condition was stable and he was on the VA hospital's waiting list for an operation. I didn't know he passed away until two days after the fact. Luckily he had a...

URGENT: Pet Care Needed
2007-07-10 07:46:00
UPDATE: Within moments of posting this a good friend offered to watch after the kids for us. Thanks for everyone who replied with ideas and offers!Due to the death of both of my parents this past week we need a to find somebody who can keep our two dogs for two weeks. They're indoor dogs used to living in apartments and going for 3 walks a day. The little guy especially can not be left in a back yard because he's a professional escape artist. They have a large travel kennel that they can sleep in at night. Our only alternative is to find a local kennel but I'd feel much better knowing that the "kids" are with gringos who treat dogs as people, they way they should be.We're not sure when we're returning but we do have a couple of friends who can take them off your hands on August 2nd. Please,...

Mom and Dad, I will miss you
2007-07-07 17:30:00
My father passed away on Monday, July 2, 2007. Two weeks before his 69th birthday. My mom passed away today, Saturday, July 7, 2007. She was 64 years old.Six years ago a doctor gave my dad six months to live. He had other plans though. Last year mom was diagnosed with lung cancer and in March 2006 they said she had less than a week left. She decided to stick around another 16 months.I'm going to be hiding under a rock for a while (JP will throw me scraps of food every now and then so don't worry about me.) I'll write again on the blog when inspiration hits. Thanks to all of my friends who have been supportive over the past week. I've always said that we choose our family and many of my friends are truly my family. I love you guys! And JP, I love you! You have kept me sane through some hard t...

When You Hit Bottom, You Can Only Go Up
2007-07-07 04:38:00
I'm leaving Uruguay for a while. There are some things in my life that I prefer to keep private between me, my family and my closest friends. I'll share some of the generalities of what I'm referring to here with the hope that other may benefit from my misfortune.First I want to out line the generally-accepted five stages of grief from Wikipedia.=============================The stages are: Denial : The initial stage: "It can't be happening."Anger : "How dare you do this to me?!" (either referring to God, oneself, or anybody perceived, rightly or wrongly, as "responsible")Bargaining : "Just let me live to see my son graduate."Depression : "I'm so sad, why bother with anything?"Acceptance : "I know that I will be in a better place."Kübler-Ross originally applied these stages to any form o...

Being a Gay IBMer
2007-06-29 11:13:00
[Because of an employee non-disclosure agreement I can't write about any clients or companies I worked for through IBM nor any details of projects I worked on. Also, what I write here is my own opinion and views. I haven't been employed by IBM since 2002.]June is Gay Pride Month so for one of my last entries of the month I thought I'd recall some of the experiences I had working for IBM. Last week I stumbled upon a friend's blog --- Sarah Siegel's Stories. I know Sarah from EAGLE, IBM's LGBT diversity group.IBM is dedicated to diversity. All of the Fortune 50 companies today (except ExxonMobil) offer domestic-partner benefits. Most companies talk about diversity in one form or another. At IBM they truly stand behind their words. My first day on the job was January 2, 1997. If memory serves,...

Thermostat Is Your Friend
2007-06-27 11:57:00
Ten days later I still have a cold. A couple of days ago I felt like I was about to shake it for good but no such luck. Here's an excerpt from an email I wrote Shirley today:"I still have a cold. It's horrible. I can't get warm in this house. Not true. I can't get this house to be consistently warm. The lowest setting on the gas heater in the bedroom makes it too hot overnight. One click lower it gets too cold overnight. THERMOSTAT! I never thought I'd miss that word so much!"Urofish has an excellent entry on his blog about home heating and insulation (lack of) in Uruguay. I echo a lot of his observations about growing up in a cold climate, in my case Westchester County, followed by the mountains of New York State, and finally Eastern Long Island. We had our share of very cold and snowy wi...

Binational Couples
2007-06-22 22:52:00
Hmm, I seem to be on a writing spree. I've had a cold/flu since Sunday so maybe I'm starting to feel better. Also, we just got past the winter solstice so the days are going to start getting longer! Even though it's the first days of winter (cold) the days get longer (sun) which is good (smile). Maybe the cold (the weather and the one in my nose) along with the short days accounts for my more-negative-than-usually rantings lately. Uruguay is a wonderful country. Those of you who live here can probably relate to some of the things I wrote about in my last few posts. Those who aren't here yet should know what to expect. One of the things that attracts a lot of foreigners to Uruguay is that it feels like going back in time to a more innocent era. One of the things that drives a lot of foreign...

Nothing Is As Simple As You Expect
2007-06-22 14:40:00
In my last post I ended with "we're off to DHL". If you've read some of my older posts you already know that I'm not a big fan of DHL Uruguay. But I'll come back to this in a minute. In addition to sending the FBI report to Los Angeles we had the goal to pay my British Hospital monthly quota. This post continues a theme that Brazzie wrote about on UruguayDreaming.com.Here's how we spent the last two hours . . .1) Bill Pay Place in Punta Carretas Shopping --- "Do you sell international certified checks?" "No"2) Banco de la Republica in Punta Carretas Shopping --- Pick a number. They're serving number 52 and we picked number 78. I'm a pretty patient guy for a New Yorker but I didn't want to sit around and watch the two tellers help 25 people and in the end tell us "No". So we left.3) Banco Co...

Report of Good Conduct for Visa
2007-06-22 11:43:00
Months and months ago I reported that the only thing holding up my permanent residency here in Uruguay was the legalization of my FBI report. Well, it's still outstanding. The people I had helping me with my visa didn't have any luck (I'm trying to be nice here) getting it legalized so I requested all of my papers back from them. Here's the scoop. You can either get the FBI report done yourself in the USA before you leave like I did or wait until you get to Uruguay and go to Interpol in Montevideo.Option 1) Do it yourself --- go to your local police department and tell them you need fingerprints taken to request an FBI report for yourself. They'll charge you a few dollars, get your hands all dirty, and you walk out of there w...

Therapeutic Ramblings
2007-06-20 13:12:00
This is a venting post! :-)We are moving out of this house in a few weeks. We're planning a trip to British Columbia and Washington State. I will not miss this house! The location is great and it's a cute house but it has problems. I'm very happy I didn't buy it. Breaking the lease might cost a couple of thousand dollars but it's better than having to deal with renovating a house. We have three bathrooms. In the one off the kitchen the tank doesn't fill after you flush it. I tried adjusting the ball thingy inside of the tank but to no avail. Luckily we have a moisture problem in the basement so we have dehumidifier running all the time. When the dehumidifier's bucket is full we dump it in the toilet tank. One problem fixes the other. The second bathroom is off of the master bedroom. The toil...

Electricity Part I --- AC/DC 220V 120V 50/60 HZ
2007-05-08 12:56:00
Now that I've given birth to OutInUruguay.com I have a little more time to work on other things. I've been promising entries about electricity for a while so here's Part I.Part I, Electricity in the world. All of North America uses a common electrical standard Alternating Current (AC) 120 volts at 60 Hertz. Growing up in Canada or the United States you're not exposed to any other electrical standards. Well, it turns out that most of the world uses 220 volts at 50 Hertz. While researching this entry I discovered that it's commonly accepted that 220 V at 60 Hz is the most efficient way to deliver electricity but very few countries around the world use this standard. To make this a little more confusing the terms 120 V and 220 V are not really accurate. 1...

Out In Uruguay dot Com
2007-05-07 18:56:00
Introducing OutInUruguay.com. Pablo and I have been working on several Web projects and this is the launch of our first big one. I've worked in technology for around 20 years but becoming a Web developer/publisher required learning a whole new set of skills --- and I'm the first to admit that I have a lot more to learn! The cool thing is I'm enjoying the work. It allows for much more creativity than being a systems engineer.About OutInUruguay.com. This site came about as the offspring of one of our not-yet-ready-for-prime-time projects. I was taking too much time learning new skills --- content management systems, programming languages (HTML isn't what it used to be --- where the hell did CSS come from?), SEO, SEF URLs, Web hosting, etc. Since I'm the tec...

Another Post About Shipping to Uruguay
2007-03-26 08:10:00
My discontent with Miami-Box escalates. Google sent me a post card to verify my mailing address for my account. They sent it on March 8th. Today is the 26th and I still haven't received it. Also, right after I opened my Miami-Box account I changed my address on Netflix from USABox to Miami-Box. Netflix sent two CDs to the M-B address and they never arrived here and they were never returned to Netflix. Since it's too much of a hassle to send a receive DVDs I've canceled my Netflix account. Since I've been a customer for so long with never losing a single DVD before they didn't give me any grief over the two missing DVDs. Besides, with Blockbuster right around the corner, three stores in Punta Carretas Shopping that sell DVDs and CDs, Apple iTunes movie downloads, and Amazon movie downloads...

USABox Über Alles
2007-03-08 12:34:00
Hola everyone. It's been a while since my last post. I've been very busy working on my Web projects. Plus for the entire month of February I was forced to used Microsoft Windows (yuck). I'm gonna do some venting in this post. Normally I try to concentrate on the good and forget about the bad but right now I just have a need to let some frustrations out.First topic for venting: Miami-Box (www.miami-box.com). I'll start by saying a few good things about them. They're cheap, the people are generally pleasant, and they do a great job delivering letters and magazines. Now for the not so good. On January 31st the power adapter for my Apple laptop (my girlfriend as JP refers to it) died. So, on January 31st I ordered a replacement online from Apple. It arrive in Miami at the offices of Miami-Box ...

Technology, Friends, Photos, and Work
2007-02-07 13:48:00
A few days ago I posted how much I love my Mac. Well, the next day the power supply to my laptop literal fried. A replacement is waiting for me in Miami right now and Miami-Box should deliver on Friday so all will be good in the world again. The good thing about having this happen on a Mac is that I have a .mac (www.mac.com) account. My laptop continuously and automatically backed up my contacts, calendar, passwords, to-dos, etc. All I had to do was log into my Mac mini, enter my .mac info, and I was up and running again. I did have to install some software on the mini that I didn't have on the laptop but that's just a minor inconvenience. If I didn't have my .mac account being without my laptop for two weeks would have been absolute hell.I few days before my laptop went on a much earned ...

Visa Status and Types
2007-02-07 13:40:00
Some people have asked me for an update on my visa situation. Nothing much to report. I'm here legally (thankfully) and am waiting on two things. The first was the civil registry wouldn't accept the copy of my birth certificate since it did not list my parents' names. I sent for another official copy from the mother land and that has arrived so we just have to have it translated and submit it to the civil registry so they can issue my Uruguayan birth certificate. The second paperwork we're waiting on is my FBI statement of no criminal record. I had it done before I left the motherland (went to the local Seattle police, got fingerprinted, and sent the request to the FBI). What I didn't do was have the Uruguayan consulate legalize it before leaving the USA. Tha...

Technology Guy at Heart
2007-01-30 13:53:00
Okay, so this blog is supposed to be a photo blog about my life in Uruguay. Well, I'm going to deviate a little with this entry. When I was a kid I loved technology. I still don't want to give away my true age to those who don't know it but let's just say we're talking about the pre-PC era. Then at some point technology became my profession and over the years I enjoyed it less and less. Now that I'm semi-retired I'm starting to find pleasure in playing with computers and gadgets again. In my old life I was a Microsoft operating systems and networking specialist. I got so sick of working with Windows XP and Windows Server everyday so soon after buying my first iPod I bought an Apple Mac Mini. I still used a Windows machine at home as well since the Mac ...

UY and US Statistics
2007-01-22 07:14:00
Often people ask me what's different between life in Uruguay and the United States. That's such a huge and very general question. I could devote this entire blog to just pointing out differences. For this entry I'm going to report some statistics. These are just numbers and numbers are easily manipulated plus methods of gathering facts can differ from country to country.Since numbers are neither good or bad and interpreting numbers is often very subjective I'm going to only point out a few of the differences that, in my opinion weigh heavily in favor for Uruguay. 1) Overall crime is less. 2) 94% of the eligible population voted in the presidential election. 3) HIV infection rate per capita is half of the US. 4) A huge percentage of the population is no...

To My Gay Readers
2007-01-17 11:53:00
A bunch of my gay friends are reading this blog as well as some guys (and gals?) who have stumbled upon it. I know some of you are considering a move to Uruguay so I thought I'd write a little about gay life here. Actually "a little" is all I'm really qualified to write since I haven't really sought out the local gay scene. When I was in my twenties I lived in New York City and Miami. Back then I did plenty of socializing in gay discos, bars and night clubs. These days I'd rather stay home and watch paint dry than hang out in a bar. So if anybody is looking for a source for gay nightlife info I'm definitely not your guy.As for everyday life as a gay man in Montevideo it's pretty much been a non-issue. JP and I are completely out. We have gay friends and straight friends. Mostly straight fr...

Sunday Stroll in Punta Carretas
2007-01-16 11:44:00
Every Sunday afternoon at 1pm there's an expat lunch at the Old Maz Deli. It's a cool group of very diverse people from all over the world (though mostly gringos). On most Sundays there'll be somebody new who's in town either checking out Montevideo or who just moved to Uruguay. This post has nothing to do with the Sunday lunch except for the fact that I took these pictures this past Sunday as I was walking to Old Maz. It was an incredibly beautiful day. (If you're ever in Montevideo on a Sunday afternoon stop by and have lunch with us!)By clicking on the photos you can see a larger version. The Fish Market at Rambla Gandhi and Calle TabaréOCA Flags on Rambla GandhiPeople Enjoying the SunshineA New FlowerbedA Family Relaxing on the SeashoreCala di Volpe Boutique Hotel Rugby Anybody? One of ...

The King Has Arrived
2007-01-13 05:37:00
King bed that is. Uruvan delivered my shipment yesterday morning as scheduled. They were on time and very professional. They put together the bed and desk without a hitch and unwrapped all the furniture. They offered to unpack as well but I just had them open all the boxes. Other than the three week delay from when the ship arrived in MVD and when I actually received my stuff, I'm very happy with Uruvan. I'd contribute most of the delay to the fact that the ship arrived in port on the Friday before Christmas. Considering that most everything here shuts down the week of Christmas and New Year a three-week delay is understandable. This has been and continues to be a busy week. Wednesday was JP's birthday. Elena, Shirley and I took him out to dinner in Ciudad Viaja. Coincidently it was also Go...

Uruguay in The New York Times
2007-01-09 17:03:00
Check out the Uruguay Travel Section in The New York Times. There are some interesting articles about Punta del Este, Montevideo, and the country in general.Totally unrelated . . . my shipment from Seattle has been in Uruguay for almost three weeks. They're finally delivering everything on Friday. Hopefully they won't charge too much for storage. It's going to be nice to have some furniture in this house! Updates and photos will be forthwith....

Expat Mail Services: Miami-Box vs. USABox
2007-01-09 03:23:00
Being an expatriate doesn't sever all ties to the motherland (what I call the USA). Before I arrived in Montevideo I set up an account with USABox.With USABox you will have an address in Miami, Florida. You have all your mail (including FedEx and UPS packages) sent there. When you receive anything in your box they scan the outside of the envelope or, if it's a package, they enter a description and email you. Your online inbox shows each item waiting to be sent to you. If something's obviously junk you can simply delete it from your inbox and they'll throw it away. If you like to shop online and receive several boxes of merchandise you can request that they repack everything to save you money o...

Uruguay Survives Cuban Invasion
2007-01-08 01:42:00
We had our first out of town visitors. My friends Mirlan and Oscar were vacationing in Argentina. For the last day of their trip they took the ferry from Buenos Aires to Montevido to hang with JP and me. Mirlan and I have known each other for almost five years. This was the first time I met Oscar but I'd definitely call him a friend now; he's a cool dude.As you may have guessed from the title of this post Mirlan and Oscar are Cuban. They both live in Miami now. After having lunch at Punta Carretas Shopping we took a walk across the street to the Punta Carretas light house. Afterwards we went to a restaurant in Parque Rodó for a beer. Coincidently our waitress, Ileana, is also from Cuba. She's been here in Uruguay a year or two.For dinner we went to Ciuda...

To Ship or Not To Ship, That Is the Question
2007-01-06 04:55:00
Correction: In a previous blog entry I wrote that I needed a paper from the Uruguay consulate certifying that I lived outside of UY for at least ten years. Apparently that is wrong. The UY consulate in Miami told me that I needed it and charged a lot of money for it but in reality (according to Uruvan, the local moving company representative) that certification is only required for returning UY citizens.A few peopled had asked me questions regarding shipping furniture and household goods to Uruguay. Here's what I did and what I've learned. The moving company I chose was one of the major international companies. At first I started getting quotes from anybody and everybody. There was a huge range in prices since everyone was guessing on the weight and volume of...

2007 Arrives in Montevideo
2007-01-02 15:36:00
The year 2007 arrived in Montevideo with a bang. Many, many bangs and some booms too. The highlight of the evening was when the neighbors across the street tried launching their bottle rockets after sticking them very securely in moist soil. Out of about ten attempts three left the ground before exploding. One of the three took off across the Rambla chasing the lone car driving down the road and blew up on impact. Luckily the car remained in tact though it is unknown whether or not its passengers made it to their destination without wetting their pants.JP, Golden Lotus, and FuBarrioon the lookout for incoming rockets....

On Saturday, December 30, I left Montevideo for the first time. DT, his nephew LT, JP, and I went for a drive out to Piriápolis. Here are some snapshots from that day. I'll be adding two more posts with photos from a couple of the places we visited....

Happy New Year!
2006-12-31 21:08:00
As 2006 comes to an end it's time to look forward to the possibilities that a new year brings. In the coming days I have plenty of photos to post but for today I want to close the year with twelve optimistic and positive quotes. Happy New Year everyone!"Life is too short to spend your precious time trying to convince a person who wants to live in gloom and doom otherwise. Give lifting that person your best shot, but don't hang around long enough for his or her bad attitude to pull you down. Instead, surround yourself with optimistic people." ~ Zig Ziglar"All meaningful and lasting change starts first in your imagination and then works its way out. Imagination is more important than knowledge." ~ Albert Einstein"W...

Hospital Británico
2006-12-27 16:11:00
This morning at 6:00 am I woke up remembering that I had an appointment at the British Hospital at 9:50 am. I set my alarm for 9:00 and went back to sleep. When the alarm sounded at the prescribed hour I hit snooze; three times. At 9:30 I jumped out of bed, brushed my teeth, threw some clothes on, and called a cab. I made it to the hospital with a few minutes to spare. My appointment, so I thought, was for an echocardiogram. The receptionist couldn't find my name so I double checked my PDA and saw that I was supposed to be in cardiologia which was down the hall. The receptionist at cardiology couldn't find my name either. After a little digging she told me my appointment was "ashayr." "Que?," I asked? "La cita fue ashayr." After being confused for a few m...

Residencia En Tramite
2006-12-23 15:01:00
As of yesterday, December 22, 2006, I am no longer a tourist in Uruguay. Which is cool since I haven't really been doing much touring. So far I haven't left the city of Montevideo. My current status here is "Residencia En Tramite" which means that I've applied for a resident's visa and I am waiting. Though the requirements and process for obtaining residency in Uruguay is easier than many other countries it's still a lot of work.As for the residency process itself, there are several types of visas.
