only six months ago thousands of monks, later supported and joined by tens of thousands of civilians, marched the streets of mandalay and yangon. at first, the military regime didn't interfere and even let the peaceful protesters march towards aung san suu kyi's house. after a few days however, police and military forces brutally ended the demonstrations - officially - killing ten and injuring several dozens. the picture was taken in september 2007 in village near mandalay barely a week before the first major demonstrations started....

back to bangkok and its hot climate and even hotter nightlife. bed supperclub often hosts international djs and is "the" place to be and to be seen in. by closing time, hundreds of taxis and tuk-tuks are waiting for the not-yet-tired to bring them to the next night spot - no meter of course....

the triberg waterfalls in the black forest are supposedly the highest in all germany but then again, waterfalls don't go very high in germany. right next to it is the biggest coo-coo clock of the world. one can even walk through it and that's what a lot of asian tourists do......

in its early days the eiffel tower found little appreciation among parisians. guy de maupassant, a poplar 19th century writer, even hated it. however, he regularly went dining in the tower's restaurant since "this is the only place from where i don't have to see it!" nowadays the eiffel tower is one of the most popular monuments in the world and has attracted some 236 million visitors to date....

a picture from my recent trip to europe: it shows the railway bridge over the river rhine in cologne. after its reconstruction in 1945 it has become the most heavily used railway bridge in germany with over 1,200 trains a day going to and coming from cologne's central station....

once every year in january, thai parents would take their children out to celebrate children's day. apart from the usual sweets, gifts and children's games, the military plays a big role on this day: weapons and tanks on display, airshows and lucky draws for children to win a ride on one of the jets....

back from a trip to ho chi minh city (saigon) which has considerably changed since i left 8 months ago: more luxury brands opening shops, new office buildings and up market hotels everywhere and s-class mercedeses, porsches and even a ferrari cruising the streets. The picture shows a construction site next to my hotel in downtown hcmc....

haad yuan, koh pha ngan, thailand.
i know it's such a cliche, but i couldn't hold back from posting this one :) haad yuan is a very quiet beach on the east coast of koh pha ngan. a part from eating, swimming and lying on that perfect white sand there really isn't much else to do......

just came back from a trip to koh samui and koh pha ngan. spent the first night in chaweng on koh samui which reminded me a lot of kuta, bali with all its bars and discos and most of the fellow travellers missing breakfast. the next posts will be of the less developed and more laid-back koh pha ngan....

hua hin, thailand.
hua hin is a pretty beach resort some 200 km south west of bangkok. on week-ends the beach can get quite crowded with bangkokians and the town sees its busiest days during the annual hua hin jazz festival in june when accommodation prices triple. at low tide thousands of crabs appear on the beach, digging their holes and leaving behind all these little sand balls....

to my surprise there are quite a few empty and/or abandoned spaces and buildings in the heart of bangkok. while no one seems to know what is going to happen with the land, little by little they are occupied by squatters and their walls get covered with graffiti....

with the introduction of the subway (mrt) and the skytrain (bts), bangkok’s traffic has become somewhat more “fluid”. during peak-times it can still be amazingly frustrating but the days have gone when personal toilets were sold at red lights. the photo shows the car park at lad prao mrt station where commuters can leave their cars for free if using the subway....
