The Peace Tree
Finding peace in this world we live in seems like a daunting task. We watch as our own government is unmasked to reveal its naked aggression, its use of torture in the name of freedom and its unholy alliance with corporate power and right wing religious extremists.

Renegade Justice: An Interview With Former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias
2008-06-29 15:07:01
The topic below was originally posted on my blog, the Intrepid Liberal Journal on Wednesday, June 25th when this interview took place. David Iglesias is the prototype twenty first century Republican: charismatic, Hispanic, an evangelical Christian and a captain in the Navy Reserve who served for many years in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General Corps (“JAG”). In 1998, Iglesias campaigned to become Attorney General of New Mexico against the heavily favored Patricia Madrid. He nearly pulled off an upset and the Republican Party took notice. In 2000, Iglesias paid his party dues and worked for George W. Bush’s election. As a reward, President Bush nominated Iglesias in 2001 to be the United States Attorney from th...

This came into my inbox a few days ago...Help elect Obama and other pro-equality leaders.Four days left until a major fundraising deadline!Dear dark (that's me),"It's wrong to have millions of Americans living as second-class citizens... I will never compromise on my commitment to equal rights for all LGBT Americans."Imagine hearing those words in a State of the Union address. Or in the inauguration speech of the next President of the United States. Those words belong to Barack Obama. And LGBT people across the country are listening, hoping for the change we've lived without for eight long years.Barack's campaign has relied on millions of people, giving whatever they can afford. When you make a donation to his campaign through HRC, you send a powerful message: people who care about LGBT equa...

Obama's Chicago Boys by Naomi Klein...
2008-06-28 21:09:46
Papi's mama Ophelia, a staunch Black conscious feminist who was all about Obama for quite a while, directed me to this article a few days ago.Obama's Chicago BoysBy Naomi KleinThe Nation, June 14, 2008Straight to the SourceBarack Obama waited just three days after Hillary Clinton pulled out of the raceto declare, on CNBC, "Look. I am a pro-growth, free-market guy. I love themarket."Demonstrating that this is no mere spring fling, he has appointed 37-year-old Jason Furman to head his economic policy team. Furman is one of Wal-Mart's most prominent defenders, anointing the company a "progressive success story." On the campaign trail, Obama blasted Clinton for sitting on the Wal-Mart board and pledged, "I won't shop there." For Furman, however, it's Wal-Mart...

A Poem

Having done fragment of poetry for my last two posts, I decided to post one I wrote. It's not political, but what the hell...requiembury me if you wouldin a shroud, that my brothers and sisters, the worms and microbes, may enfold my body back into the earth, that one daya little girlsquatting before a gaily colored flowerwill lean forward to inhale its scentand in doing so,will inhale my spirit. http://www.relaywave.com/pingRelayWave.php ...

2008-06-28 13:23:14
Poetry Man, I read what you wrote here:"and now, i am not angry, just sad. sad that the death knell of the american democratic republic has turned into a funeral march. many folks looked to obama as someone who would lead america back towards democracy- but there is no democracy in politics. survival of the richest and fittest- and obama and the congress caved yet again to corporate interests. i mean, you can't bite the hand that feeds you, right?"I'm still reading Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine. It's still blowing the top off my head.Making me really sad and a little hopeless, too. The powers that be don't plan on making any concessions to the Left. The Democrats, the NDP, whatever the designated left parties in any of our countries tell us...none of their platforms mean shit. "Are We Still Broken ? How Broken Are We ?"

"To Sin by Silence, when they should protest makes Cowards out of men."Abraham Lincoln"Are We Still Broken ?" So I have a neighbor down the street that I run into walking the dog, this is his favorite way to greet me. An older fellow, WWII Vet who is wise, sarcastic and pissed. He makes me laugh, he makes think. His caustic wisdom is as insightful as it is painful. We have discussed everything from the GI Bill that was not good enough for McCain to Iraq to Oil to Hillary to Obama to Home Foreclosures to Fearmongering. Here is a smattering of some of his wisdom." I may be an old Fool, but I am old enough to know that I want Someone Young at the Helm. And I want someone that will tell me if the Bus Is Broken...which it is." He says this with a wrinkled smile."And you can bet this election thos...

The World According to Monsanto
2008-06-26 10:31:29
From TreeHuggerBy all means, the deluge of damning information, string of political intricacies and overall ominous tone of the latest documentary by French journalist and director Marie-Monique Robin, “The World According to Monsanto,” should have put me to sleep. But it didn’t. In fact, it kept my stomach literally churning. The film, a National Film Board of Canada co-production, meticulously details the manipulative deeds of Monsanto Co., one of the world’s biggest agrochemical- biotech companies, on its route to global domination by tracing a trail of evidence, cover-ups and tragedies from the American heartland and beyond.Notorious for its development of hazardous chemicals such as Agent Orange, PCBs (now banned) and the recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), Monsanto is n...

Afghanistan: Downgraded From Quagmire To FUBAR
2008-06-25 14:15:01
Things have now reached such a sorry state of affairs in Afghanistan, that if one would wish to cherry-pick failures over "successes" simply could not do so - however much one would try.For before, failures "only" overwhelmingly outnumbered small, inconsequential "successes". Now, even such small, inconsequential "successes" have become a full fledged rarity.Things have to be bad and out of control when the Taliban can waltz in and free some 1200 prisoners - including some 400 fellow Talibs - from Kandahar's Sarposa prison. This, not counting the usual fare regularly occurring in Afghanistan (you know - business as usual and all that). And as Canadian, American and other fellow N.A.T.O. soldiers provided "intelligence support" (say what?!?) for Afghan f...

a brave new america
2008-06-24 06:00:01
i haven't been terribly hopeful for a peaceful world anytime soon. the winds of change are often harbingers of hope- but i am not feeling it. there was a time when i really thought that americans could fight against the tide of corruption washing over our nation but that was the election of 2006 and it seems, with the exception of rep. kucinich and rep. wexler and the small band that is with them, that the very people who ran on tickets of changing government- haven't. then, barack obama decided to run for president. taking the stage at the 2004 democratic convention, obama blew me- and countless others away. and i felt the stirrings of hope that john kerry ( a good man) could not stir. since that time, america's constitution has been stolen and sh...

FISA and The Democrats
2008-06-22 18:47:02
The topic below was originally posted on my blog, the Intrepid Liberal Journal.I am a loyal and committed Democrat. However, my first loyalty is to our Constitution. Unquestionably, the Democratic Party's capitulation to the Bush Administration with respect to the FISA protocol is a disgrace. My favorite Democrat, Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold issued the following statement about it on June 19th:“The proposed FISA deal is not a compromise; it is a capitulation. The House and Senate should not be taking up this bill, which effectively guarantees immunity for telecom companies alleged to have participated in the President’s illegal program, and which fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans at home. Allowing courts to review the question of immunity is meaningless when the...

Shari'a and The Muslim World: An Interview With Noah Feldman
2008-06-22 11:51:21
The topic below was originally posted on my blog on Thursday, June 19th, when the interview took place.Shari’a is a code of law based on the Koran. In the Muslim world, many want to replace corrupt autocratic regimes with the Shari’a and establish traditional Islamic states. Western countries regard the Shari’a as a threat. Islamic parties are winning elections on it. Militants have used the Shari’a to justify acts of terrorism. Meanwhile, secular minded people find their most severe provisions repugnant. In his latest book, The Fall and Rise of the Islamic State (Princeton University Press), Noah Feldman tells the story behind the populist movement in the Muslim world to establish...

The Goon Show
2008-06-21 16:07:34
Saturday Sonata VII, with LT.The date up there above these words says June 21—than means it's me' birthday. And I'm working. And my sweety's in Australia. (Okay, enough winjin'.)Here's a link to another blog I occasionally remember I have, and some ancient wisdom and humor, from The Goon Show. Spike Milligan's revolutionary radio show ran on the BBC from 1951 to 1960: a unique combination of memorable characters and daft plots, surreality and twisted logic, establishment bashing, satire and parody, music hall gags, catchphrases and random silliness. It broke new ground in its use / abuse of sound effects - both as pure audio gags and in helping to make physically impossible situations instantly believable. Milligan wrote most of the scripts, helped at various times by Larry Stevens, Eric...

KING GEORGE'S REGIME ONCE AGAIN FLOODED WITH INCOMPETENCE
2008-06-21 12:13:17
This Summer again has proven that at this rate as we all have known since 2005, we should all keep an Ax and blow up rowboat in the attic. The Current Flooding in the Midwest is one example of Disaster Unpreparedness at it's absolute worst ( and I say that with no disrespect to the thousands working to sandbag and people there working to save their homes, farms and communities and businesses).People say that the Flooding in the Midwest is not as bad Katrina.I have to disagree. There are hundreds of miles and thousands of acres effected in 6 states.Where you really see the scope of this is looking at aerials ( photos and video). I find it interesting the MSM has shown very little of these aerials, if they did people would realize the staggering enormity of this situation. The Heartland is in...

al-Qaeda In Pakistan/Afghanistan: Potential Solutions?
2008-06-18 14:42:55
Much has been made (and rightly so) about Gen. Petraeus's and Amb. Crocker's frank admission a month or so ago that al-Qaeda’s main base of operation and greatest threat come from Pakistan/Afghanistan - not Iraq.Of course, that was stating the obvious known all along.Indeed, many (including yours truly) have been clamoring the same said obvious - however, that this simple fact is at last admitted openly in testimony before Congress, and that said admission was actually proded out by elected representatives, constitutes nevertheless a significant moment. In order to fully appreciate such significance, let us first go back to the core-reasons for the Afghanistan War (emphasis added): At the time, President Bush justi...

On Joy and Sorrow, Kahlil Gibran
2008-06-18 13:38:12
Kamilah, Kahlil's mother. Painting by Kahlil Gibran Dark Daughta, one of The Peace Tree's amazing contributors, has my blood boiling for both Joy and Sorrow...so I felt it my duty to give you the words of the master on the subject..._________________________________________________________________Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises wasoftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be?The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy youcan contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burnedin the potter's oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood thatwas hollowed with knives? When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shallfind it is o...

i have been on a hiatus until recently- life has a way of getting its own way- and consequently, have been out of the loop. and, i have been a bit tired of late and not always on the top of my game- but even i honed in on this one:associated press demands bloggers cease using excerptsbush and brown dine with rupert murdochrupert murdoch appointed to ap boardif that doesn't spell out where freedom of the press went, i really don't know what does.father's day was this past weekend- and i want to go on record as saying i hate all holidays. no, i am not a killjoy- but every single holiday comes with a gift attached. it isn't about celebrating- it's about spending. i am beyond angry with my inlaws right now because they made a point to tell my sister-in-law that they didn't think my husband...

A Fragment
2008-06-16 06:02:08
This fragment from Robinson Jeffers poem, "Shine, Perishing Republic" is even more relevant today than when it was written in 1925.While this America settles in the mould of its vulgarity, heavily thickening to empireAnd protest, only a bubble in the molten mass, pops and sighs out, and the mass hardens,I sadly remember that the flower fades to make fruit, the fruit rots to make earth.http://www.relaywave.com/pingRelayWave.php ...

Happy Father's Day
2008-06-14 19:44:20
Saturday Sonata VI with LT.A very simple one today. I wrote this song in around 1995 on a picnic table on the deck of a bar in Austin, Texas. It had been growing in my head as I drove and drove and drove through the heat of I10 from LA, and it poured all out pretty straight away in probably an hour or so. Later that day I realized it was Father's Day.On a sad and very related note: My wife just called from Sydney, Australia. She just arrived. Her father died Thursday morning. Peace to her and her family, and to her father, Noel. This is "Donald," from the CD Bottomfeeders. The song features the enormous talents of Bob Evoniuk on dobro, Jeff Addicott on bass, and Emy Phelps on the vocals.Donald - Little Thom(I will be doubling this post at my place with a link back here.)http://www.relaywave.com/pingRelayWave.php ...

I'm reading Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine"...
2008-06-13 13:00:50
A read I'd say that's completely on par with "The Slave Ship" and with "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" for me in terms of the sort of impact it's having.I'm learning a lot about the roots of US foreign policy predating 9/11, Iraq and Hurricane Katrina. It's horrific. There are so many "choice" bits of information I don't know quite where to begin.Continuing to think about madness and the construction of "sanity" there was a chapter called "The Torture Lab" which shows how experiments conducted right here in kkkanada lead to the formation of techniques probably still being funded by the CIA and propagated by organizations like the School of the Amerikkkas, taught to their students who then return home to Latin Amerikkka. But the link between those horrific torture techniques and what is righ...

Why an apology from that mealy mouthed idiot Stephen Harper is wrong and deceptive...
2008-06-13 12:13:27
I found this article on Hidden From History: The Canadian Holocaust - The Untold Story of the Genocide of Aboriginal Peoples. It's about the recent fake ass apology from the idiot prime minister of kkkanada - Steven Harper. It's so manipulative. I think the apology is meant to divide and conquer, potentially rending those Native people defined (by the state) as too "radical" from those who believe in a more conservative approach. I think that as some activists are taking stands and going to jail for their defiance...as some activists continue to question and rage against the upcoming 2010 Olympics in Vancouver...this "apology" from a white supremacist, uber conservative, christian patriarch can be understood as pure strategy. Nasty piece of work, triggering people I've no doubt and raising ...

Unprecedented Moment
2008-06-12 21:36:06
How lucky am I to have the first post following such an unprecedented moment in history? A moment that will, I am quite sure, be followed by another just as unparalleled, yet even sweeter occasion.I'd have been lucky, as well, if Hillary Clinton had won the nomination, for it too would have been an extraordinary moment in our nation’s history. It is, in a great many respects, as incredible, and due our humble respect, that a woman came so near to the historic fortune now bestowed upon Barack Obama. Yes. We are all living in a rather astonishing time. An era that, to be quite honest with you, seemed like an unreachable dream. When one of these two amazing possibilities is within our grasp... I’d say we are rather fortunate to be witness. Now I don’t wa...

Mad Pride: Part III

The Mad Pride movement or people who independently think along the same lines, are devoting blogs to specific mental illnesses. One such blogger is writer and journalist Liz Spikol. Her blog The Trouble With Spikol is currently one of the most popular blogs on the subject of madness. Liz has bipolar disorder and speaks openly about her own experiences with madness, as well as writing about issues that affect the mental health community. In these videos, Liz discusses her personal experiences with electro-convulsive therapy or ECT, in her straightforward, humorous and charming manner. Since her treatment, Spikol has spoken out against ECT.Video I - 11:20 in durationVideo II - 6:34 durationBelow are a few links to descriptions of ECT, both pro and con:http://www.antipsychiatry.org/ect.htmhttp://www.mayoclinic.com/health/electroconvulsive-therapy/MH00022http://www.ect.org/index.phphttp://www.relaywave.com/pingRelayWave.php ...

Poppycock!
2008-06-12 13:16:25
(Washington Post Foreign Service Wednesday, June 11, 2008; Page A01) BAGHDAD, June 10 -- High-level negotiations over the future role of the U.S. military in Iraq have turned into an increasingly acrimonious public debate, with Iraqi politicians denouncing what they say are U.S. demands to maintain nearly 60 bases in their country indefinitely. Top Iraqi officials are calling for a radical reduction of the U.S. military's role here after the U.N. mandate authorizing its presence expires at the end of this year. Encouraged by recent Iraqi military successes, government officials have said that the United States should agree to confine American troops to military bases unless the Iraqis ask for their assistance, with some saying Iraq might be better off without them. "The Americans are makin...

Goodbye Tour To Irrelevance And Ash Heap Of History
2008-06-11 14:30:01
President George W. Bush launched a "farewell tour" to Europe in order to "solidify" relations, among other delusional objectives to bolster his self-importance in the judging eyes of History, as opposed to remedy in a small measure his demonstrated incompetence - and that of his administration - over his two mandates as President. This is what the worse President ever had to say on his launching of this little trip:"I'm looking forward to meeting with our friends and allies. We've got strong relations in Europe, and this trip will help solidify those relations. And we got a lot to talk about".On the menu, we have:- Afghanistan;- the economy;- Iran;- Middle East peace talks. Now, I will not delve into (once again) why Bush an...

Muse
2008-06-10 15:58:24
The Peruvian poet Cesar Vallejo is considered one of the great Spanish-language poets of the twentieth century. Below is one of his poems that sings of the Muse many of us pursue.Dead Idyll What is she doing now, my Andean, sweetRita of the wild rushes and the wild grapes;now that Byzantium suffocates me, and my blood drowses, like weak cognac, within me. Where are her hands that used to contritely ironthe afternoons, those whitenesses of the hereafter;now, in this rain that takes away evenmy desire to live. What has become of her flannel skirt; of herworries; of her wayof walking; of her tasting the sugarcane brandies of May? She must be at the door watching some sign in the sky,and finally, she’ll say, trembling: “Jesus…it’s cold!”And in the roof’s thatched canes, a wild bird will cry.http://www.relaywave.com/pingRelayWave.php ...

In the Darkness of Winter Hope Came.....
2008-06-10 14:57:48
Something remarkable happened this week in Our Country. Millions of people that barely know each other stood together and stood up for Change. And All the people came via a remarkable journey. The one aspect of the story that the Media rarely covered or even alluded to was the most beautiful. As Obama waged a battle across the Country, and as he came to every state, there was palpable excitement. Someone that wanted to talk about Our Civil Liberties and the Constitution and Fearmongering and the Senseless War, was standing in front of us. After 7.5 years of people huddled in their living rooms this man bravely spoke of Hope and Change. The lines were huge, thousands of people at hundreds of events, it was remarkable. In St.Paul the night of Obama's Victory, the lines were over a mile long to...

John McCain's Friend Phil Gramm
2008-06-08 13:45:37
The topic below was originally posted on my blog, the Intrepid Liberal Journal. With the drama of the Obama/Clinton race finally over we can focus on the sharp contrasting platforms and personalities of Barack Obama and Mccain">John McCain. An old cliché is that we can judge people by the company they keep. McCain’s camp has vigorously tried to scare people about Obama’s associations. Well, if you’re a hard working wage earner consider John McCain’s friend Phil Gramm. In 1996, John McCain endorsed former Texas Senator Phil Gramm’s quest for the presidency. As a Senator, Gramm was the Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and worked hard to promote the interests of banks and credit card companies at the expense of...

The topic below was originally posted yesterday, on my blog the Intrepid Liberal Journal. I realize it's not the norm for a political blog and appreciate readers here at The Peace Tree taking the time.Allow me to take a moment and divert from my standard political blog writing. I realize fellow activists who visit this site are currently consumed by the presidential election and the grand issues at stake this political season. However, we should not overlook other life and death issues that too easily escape our attention. Cancer is a silent killer responsible for the deaths of millions. We all know friends or family who have contracted this insidious disease. Specifically, Leukemia is among the cruelest and often targets the young. The niece of a good friend of mine was diagnosed with Leuk...

Mad Pride Movement Part II
2008-06-05 19:27:24
Violence And Mental HealthWhen I think about the “obviously” mad people of the world, I can’t help but make a limited comparison to Middle Eastern folk living in the western world. When people encounter the obviously mad, don’t they think for a brief moment that they might be dangerous? Don’t we perhaps fear that they will rape our mother, stab our brother or shoot someone famous as they’re walking into the lobby of their penthouse? Do they hear a voice from their god telling them to do it? They may even think there will salvation for them come judgment day, if they do away with the sinful. Have you ever heard “the terrorists” referred to as crazy? I’m not attempting with this post to write anything factual or to suggest solutions. In fact, I have more questions than...

Of This Moment
2008-06-05 00:01:47
It is of this moment that we will be remembered… In our lifetime we’ve neared several "impossible dreams" but none quite like this; the dream of one man, one nation rising up to heights that were once unheard of, seemingly insurmountable. Now a new struggle begins, the precedent’s been set, and it’s up to us and the nuance of history to construct an even greater one. Yes. Yes. The unprecedented height of Martin Luther King Junior’s dream wrapped in immense struggle, awash in the blood of the black man, is now so tangible and so very near; unparalleled in the history of these United States where men and women are “free”, where they have the vote, where freedoms ring, where- Wait!Hold on one goddamned second!Son of a bitch! I think the film is ...

"Because It Was Necessary" ...
2008-06-04 12:58:57
Behold incompetence defending itself (the 4th Principle of Incompetence in action) (emphasis added):Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defended tough interrogation techniques for terrorism suspects approved by the Bush administration in the wake of 9/11, saying they were necessary to protect America from new attacks. In her most extensive public comments about how the administration dealt with detainee interrogations in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, and the anthrax attacks that followed, Rice insisted the methods of questioning complied with both U.S. law and treaty obligations. But she acknowledged that those rules had since changed and that the United States was a "different place" then, adding that the administration's top priority at the time had been preventing new attacks and not n...

hypocritic oath
2008-06-03 06:00:01
nothing like the stench of corruption in the summer air. if nothing else drives the point home that new america is a nation run- not simply by capitalism but by the corporate ruling class- this should tamp it down good:more than 7 million americans abused prescription drugs in 2005- so since this is 2008, i am going to assume that number went up. within the last 8 years of the debacle that has been bushco, the public trust in our government's ability and desire to do it's job- especially the fda- has been shaken to the point it's nonexistent. this is one reason:"the FDA had “corrupted its mission to protect the public health” and that Mr Troy “is aggressively intervening against the public on behalf of drug companies and medical device manufacturers.”probably the biggest problem...

Kick ass! If somebody tries to stop the march of democracy, we will seek them out and kill them! We must be tougher than hell...Our will is being tested, but we are resolute… Stay strong! Stay the course! Kill them! Be confident! Prevail! We are going to wipe them out! George W. Bush Teleconference, April 6, 2004This confirms my suspicion. George W.
